I find myself torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season. When Lisa B. Kirsch-Satawa was 12 years old, her family drove to Lansing to see her uncle get sworn in to the State Bar of Michigan. Upon witnessing this officious occasion, Satawa turned to her parents and informed them that someday, she, too, would be a lawyer. “I didn’t even know what that meant,” she says. “But I loved the pomp and circumstance, the oath. It resonated with me that this is what ‘good’ people do.” Since that day, she has taken her own personal oath to heart. After studying journalism and economics in college, she moved to New York City to pursue investment banking, but her desire to “do good” was always nagging at her. She returned to Michigan to attend law school, before becoming a prosecutor, then a public defender, where she found her place to continue her oath. “I saw cases where parents were getting railroaded,” Kirsch-Satawa says. “I wanted to help make a difference in a parent’s life. So I studied all that I could about abuse, sexual assault, children, development and linguistics, so I can help to make a difference every minute of every day, to make the world a better place.” She is driven by seeing the horror of innocent or falsely accused people going to prison because of bad lawyering. “It is our responsibility to society, to the public and to ourselves to prevent this tragedy with competence, and integrity to ensure justice is accomplished,” she says. In 2016, Kirsch-Satawa founded Kirsch Daskas Law Group (Kdlawgroup.com) with lifelong friend Christina Daskas, who passed away two years later. Last May, Kirsch-Satawa opened the group’s new location in Bloomfield Hills, where she lives with her husband, Mark, a criminal defense attorney with whom she has two adult children. “Our mission when founding the firm was to prevent wrongful conviction by defending against false allegations, one client at a time,” Kirsch-Satawa says. “Our vision was to train, mentor and grow young lawyers into great lawyers who understand at their core the importance of excellent and ethical advocacy, to holistically reframe the perception of our clients from the person accused to the human — mom, dad, son, employer, brother, student and member of a community. We want them to be seen as human, not just the name on the other side of the ‘v.’ “I have a passion for doing the right thing and being a defense attorney is exactly that: It is bringing issues of unfairness or violations of right to the forefront.”

Today, KDLG has four full-time attorneys, including Kirsch-Satawa, plus one contract attorney, all continuing to work to achieve the founders’ goal. “We are a team of learners and mentors,” she says. “I feel like I am more of a mentor now than in the past, and it makes me proud to see everyone on my team armed to succeed.” She carries this mission with her at all times. In 2023, KDLG “adopted” the family of a permanently disabled veteran single mom with four children, including a baby needing a thymus transplant and another child with autism. “We were able to furnish their apartment, provide air purifiers and fulfill not only their Christmas wish list but also what is needed for home-schooling,” Kirsch-Satawa says. The firm also provides discounted rates to veterans and individuals in recovery. The recipient of countless awards — including being recently named one of Michigan Lawyers Weekly’s 2023 Influential Women of Law and the Right To Counsel Award from the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan, which is the highest honor a criminal attorney can receive — and member of equally countless organizations, many as board member, Kirsch-Satawa points to one of her most proud moments as an attorney: Working with the University of Michigan Innocence Clinic and Northwestern University’s Center on Wrongful Convictions, she successfully achieved exoneration for a man serving life in prison for a wrongful conviction, based on a false confession and untestable DNA evidence. He had already served 18 years. In her work life and personal life, Kirsch-Satawa is consumed with helping people unable to speak for themselves, and benefiting the community by protecting what matters most. “My clients find themselves at risk of losing their liberty, their children and family, their employment and professional licensure. They are scared. “I am the first person since their problem arose who is unequivocally on their side. I listen, strategize, humanize and try to bear the worry so they can have peace of mind,” she says. “I speak for my clients when they don’t have a voice and are trying to navigate an unknown system where they are protected by rights they are not familiar with. I carry the Constitution high over my head every day. I do what I do because it is the right thing and justice must be achieved.”

Ross School of Business, Rappaport loved to perform and played with his band Collision Six on school breaks. It was ultimately a mentor who would convince him to pursue his passion. “[He said], ‘It seems like the music you’re writing is really good, and it would be a shame for you to look back later in life and [think] you never really tried,’” Rappaport says. The combination, he says, allows him to combine his passion with his skills, with a professional tagline: “At home at the intersection of music and business.” “I love business, and I love music, and the fact that I get to make music my business is awesome,” he said. The path to his current success wasn’t linear. After graduation, Rappaport moved to East Lansing to be near his bandmates and

concentrate on their music, and they nearly got their big break. Rappaport’s brother happened to be friends with the son of a successful band manager who liked their three-track EP but wanted more. With no money for professional audio, the band gathered around an answering machine to record more of their songs and sent them off. At this point, however, Rappaport was getting tired of college life and took a job in accounting. When they heard back about their recording, the band manager told them that while it was a close decision, he had ultimately decided to sign another band, Seether. That band would go on to become a worldwide success, but for Rappaport, it was a sign to move on. CONTINUED >

“For me, that was the official, ‘Alright this wasn’t meant to be an original band’ [moment], so we shifted our focus.” Collision Six became mostly a cover band, but eventually founding members began to move on with careers, marriages and kids. Rappaport also got married and continued with his accounting career but kept playing with Collision Six, now with new members, including his wife, Sarah. In the early 2010s, the band signed on with an entertainment booking agency to become a part-time wedding and event band. Meanwhile, his wife planned to leave her teaching job to open two tutoring franchises of the Tutoring Center. As Rappaport began doing more band management in addition to performing, he realized he could start his own

entertainment booking agency. The couple made plans to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams: He would continue his primary accounting job until his wife’s business was profitable, then would transition to his own agency full-time. In 2015, Rappaport founded Detroit Event Company with another band leader. At the onset, the two focused on their own respective bands, but the business eventually grew to include more entertainers, and Rappaport took over the company in 2016. Now, Detroit Event Company offers a concierge service to match event organizers with an array of live bands, musicians, DJs and event production. Eventually he’d like to grow the business to become Metro Detroit’s go-to entertainment company. Sarah also plans to transition to working for the agency full time, and the couple — now with two small children — is currently in the process of selling their tutoring business. While his career path may not be quite what he expected, Rappaport loves what he does and says his unconventional career path prepared him for what he does today. “I just love that feeling of being on stage and playing live with people — and I also really love business,” he says. “I’m so glad I learned the skills that I did at business school, and I was able to work in a professional environment and work my way up."

“It was always a dream of mine to combine an equestrian session with the beauty of the beach,” Must says. “We have so many lakes in the immediate area, with Kent Lake being one of my favorites because of its stunning curvature of the shore line.”

“Johnson Nature Center in Bloomfield Hills is a place that is near and dear to my heart and offers a stunning variety of flowers and foliage,” Must says. “I’m a big supporter of the Nature Center, often holding fundraisers to donate back to its preservation.”

“I truly believe that beauty can be found anywhere,” Must says. “I found this random magnificent Magnolia tree on Lincoln in Birmingham in front of someone’s house. I knocked on the door and the homeowners very graciously agreed to my request to bring clients over. Part of the magic of Magnolia trees is that they are only in bloom for a fleeting moment.”

“High-school seniors have fun walking around the residential side streets and finding just the right combination to incorporate beautiful landscaping and architecture,” Must says.

“Quarton Lake in Birmingham was always a special place for these long-time Birmingham residents. We celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a beautiful and emotional portrait session — the bride even wore her original wedding dress,” Must says.

Finding a life partner just might be easier than finding someone you can travel with. Pace, patience and priorities all matter when organizing itineraries, straddling time zones and navigating new places. Do you like languid mornings with room service, wide sandy beaches and white-glove service? Or, do you prefer watching the sunrise in hiking boots, launching into eye-opening excursions and digging to find that hidden gem of a restaurant that serves local food to locals? When the stars align, both partners have an affinity for generally the same kind of vacation, or are willing to compromise. Enjoying travel with your mate is the icing on the (wedding) cake. Here are a few ideas for fabulously romantic getaways. Bon Voyage!

Traveling can be as stressful as it is sublime. Exhausting as it is inspiring. Traveling as a couple requires additional planning and communication with a healthy dose of patience.
