The Holiday Issue The holidays are here, and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child, whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflects that best. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community who need assistance or are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other, extending grace, empathy and love!

“Criss” Kringle’s coming to town a little early this year. And he’s got creative plans to spread some musical Yuletide cheer throughout the Motor City. You might even say that it’s his civic duty. “I’m in the service industry. As an entertainer, I’m here to play some music and take you through a bit of a holiday music Ted Talk,” says actor/singer/ songwriter Darren Criss about his “A Very Darren Crissmas” tour coming to the Fisher Theatre on Sunday, Dec. 10. “Hopefully, people will leave with a little holiday pep in their step.” CONTINUED >

“I’ve got a lot of kinship with the state of Michigan and the city of Detroit.” — Darren Criss Topping Criss’ concert playlist are songs from his A Very Darren Crissmas album which dropped in 2021. But because of the pandemic, Criss never got a chance to have a full-blown Christmas concert tour — until now. “The album and tour showcase creative imaginings of classic tunes and rarely covered hidden gems along with two original Christmas songs,” says Criss, a 2009 Theatre Performance graduate of the University of Michigan. Joining Criss on stage is fellow UM Wolverine and BFF Tomek Miernowski as his music director. Criss’ set list features “a wildly eclectic collection of songs from big band Christmas classics to novelty tunes and modern-day folkpop ballads,” he says. Long before the Crissmas album — which features duets with Adam Lambert, Lainey Wilson and Even Rachel Wood — Criss was writing original songs for the hit TV series Glee which featured Criss in his breakout role as Blaine Anderson. In 2018, he won a Primetime Emmy, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Critics’ Choice Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his role as Andrew Cunanan in The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. In addition, he recently starred in Netflix’s hit series Hollywood, for which he also served as executive producer. And Broadway fans will remember Criss’ star turns in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Hedwig and the Angry Inch and American Buffalo with Laurence Fishburne and Sam Rockwell in 2022.

Though Criss won’t be able to squeeze in a visit to the Big House in Ann Arbor this time around, he’s already checking out the home game schedule for 2024. “I make it my business to come back at least once a year, especially during football season,” says Criss, who attended nearly every game when he was a student. The last time Criss was in Michigan, he also visited the Motown Museum with his band. “It was fun,” he says. “There’s a bit of Motown that’s infused in this album that was inspired by the Detroit sound. So, when we play [the Christmas concert at the Fisher Theatre], there will be a bit of a hometown vibe.” Though Criss’ dad moved all over the country growing up, he spent his formative years in Detroit. “So that’s why when I applied to the University of Michigan, and ultimately got in, it was such a big thing for me to be able to take my dad to the Big House for a football game. He hadn’t been to Michigan since he was 10. And I took him, easily, more than 50 years later to see a game there. That was a lot of fun,” Criss reminisced. “I’ve got a lot of kinship with the state of Michigan and the city of Detroit.”

Beginning with about 10 pairs of shoes — a fashionista’s paradise of pumps and boots by Fendi, Jimmy Choo and Christian Louboutin — she quickly gleaned a lot of interest from potential customers, but not a lot of follow-throughs. “We were negotiating all day for one shoe, and no money came,” Shepherd says. So she began investigating the possibility of a brick-and-mortar store. She started making friends with local resale shops and asking questions, then hosting small pop-up shopping parties. In April 2019, she took the plunge and opened Rotate Boutique (rotateboutique.com) in Bloomfield Hills. The space was small, with limited visibility and foot traffic off the main roads. When the pandemic hit less than a year later, things got even tougher, but Shepherd managed to survive through online retail and savings. “I was suffering and struggling, but I was still learning the business,” she says. “I said, ‘Either I stay here and just figure it out and remain this hidden gem, or I push myself into the uncomfortable unknown space.’” With that, Shepherd relocated to Downtown Birmingham in August 2022. The move, she says, has been a great success, bringing in new clients and friends, locals and walk-by travelers and neighboring shops. “It’s great, it’s even more than what I had envisioned,” she says. “I’m happy.” Rotate brings high-quality pre-owned pieces — mostly for women — at a discount, from luxury brands like Chanel, Hermes, Gucci and Louis Vuitton, plus little-known high-end retailers rarely found in the United States. Items can range from a $65 Off-White tee-shirt to $5,000-plus Chanel suits and more. All items come with a certificate of authenticity, verified by Entrupy. Rotate also sells new, lower-priced items that range from $15-$35, including graphic socks, umbrellas, accessory trays and make-up bags. The shop is based largely on a consignment model. With a motto of “If you’re over it, rotate it,” Shepherd works with those looking to sell their high-end pieces, inspecting the items and researching their current market value to negotiate a sale price and profit share. The items are then held in the store for 90 days and returned to the owner if they don’t sell. Shepherd says her shop is a perfect one-stop-shop for holiday gifts, with a variety of clothes and accessories, plus gift-wrapping and delivery services. “You’re getting high-end quality pieces, great customer service, a warm inviting environment and a pleasant staff,” she says. “And you’re getting more bang for your buck.”

Full of flamboyant color, guitars and skulls — three of Tyler’s passions — his artwork is as vibrant as he is. The Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center’s Holiday Shop has been a highly anticipated annual event for close to four decades — and this year’s offerings, available through Dec. 20, are as unique as always. The BBAC (bbartcenter.org) in Birmingham has served Metro Detroit’s visual arts community since its founding in 1957. With a mission of “connecting people of all ages and abilities with visual arts education, exhibitions and other creative experiences,” their classes, workshops and lectures fill up fast, and their exhibits are always free and open to the public — they are truly all about “art for all.” Though the BBAC shines all year, during the holiday season, the BBAC Holiday Shop is a destination to browse, shop and discuss, with proceeds benefiting BBAC’s education programs. Jewelry, ceramics, scarves, soaps, toys, decorative and functional wood items, prints, paintings, tiles and so much more (check out the hundreds of hand-made ornaments and heirloom-quality Judaica) from more than 200 juried artists and artisans fill more than 3,000-square-feet of gallery space. Among this year’s artists is fiber-artist Julie Langensiepen, creator of J.E.M.A Dolls — dolls and creatures, purses and fineart wearables handcrafted of premium-quality fabrics, many saved from a Dumpster-doomed fate. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
