As summer winds down and school looms around the corner, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time outdoors are exchanged for busier routines and schedules. The older we get, the quicker summers seem to pass, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Although the routine of school is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it can be a little bittersweet. Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community—kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special and their loyalty and sense of wonder are refreshing. A Place For Ever y th i ng A pair of local friends customize organization systems for clients — and offer tips for back-to-school.

Marilyn Boji and Renee Sitto-Lige believe that “organization can be life-changing.” The pair, who have been friends for 25 years, have also been business partners since 2016, as owners of Oakland County-based Organized Solutions (organizedsolutionsdetroit.com). “We met in high school, and have been friends ever since,” Sitto-Lige says. “We got married and had kids at the same time.” Sitto-Lige worked for an interior designer and created window displays, while Boji worked for Gucci. As life with young children, work and juggling babysitters became more hectic, the friends decided to take a different path. “We began staging a few homes for our friends who were realtors,” Sitto-Lige says. “We began building relationships with homeowners who liked how we decluttered their homes and put their belongings away.” As Sitto-Lige and Boji got more staging jobs, clients began asking the pair to help pack and unpack when moving into new homes, and a business quickly snowballed through word of mouth and Instagram. Now Organized Solutions offer services including staging occupied homes, working with clients who are moving, packing and unpacking and organizing all areas of a home. “Because Marilyn and I both have design backgrounds, we’re able to not only create customized, functional systems, but make spaces look pretty, using organizing products to complement clients’ homes and styles—while working within their budget.” Studies show that having an organized space has a direct effect on a person’s mental wellbeing. “Everyday life tasks become easier when things are in place,” Sitto-Lige says. “Homes run like businesses. If there is a good system in place, work becomes more efficient. And every room in every house functions the same — but without an organization system, spaces become disheveled, and it becomes harder to catch up. “Any space can be organized, no matter the size,” she says. “You don’t have to have a large pantry or a walk-in closet to be organized. You just need a system where everything is visible and easily accessible, which saves money in the long run — no more searching for lost

items and rebuying things because you can’t find them. Being organized not only saves time and money, it maximizes space, creates clarity and makes life easier.” With kids heading back to school before we know it, now is the time to put systems in place to make packing lunches, storage and homework as easy as possible. Here are a few of Sitto-Lige and Boji’s top tips for kid-friendly spaces:

PANTRY

An organized pantry makes packing lunch easier. Keep snacks on lower shelves so kids can reach them — and older ones can even help pack their lunches. Ditch the ugly boxes. Decanting your pasta and cereals in airtight containers will keep them fresh longer. An organized pantry also saves money at the grocery store! Everything is visible so you don’t purchase items you already have.

CRAFT SPACES

Take items out of their packages, and display them in labeled baskets and bins, so everyone knows where everything goes. Plus, says Sitto-Lige, “displaying colorful items in clear containers encourages kids to get crafty.”

DRAWERS

“We don’t believe in junk drawers!” Sitto-Lige says. Every single thing can have a specific home. Homework becomes more efficient when all the supplies are at hand. Dividers are key to this space — designating the right-sized dividers for items like pens and paper clips helps reduce clutter.

CLOSETS

Keep like-items with like-items. Sweatshirts belong with sweatshirts, long sleeves with long sleeves, short sleeves with short sleeves and so forth. Doing this helps keep everything visible and makes it easier to get dressed. Coordinate clothing by color for visual appeal.

Use a melon baller to scoop round spheres out of each melon and place them into a large bowl. In a small bowl, combine honey, lime juice and zest. Whisk to combine and pour over the melon. ITALIAN PRESSED SANDWICHES These make-ahead sandwiches are perfect for pool parties, picnics and tailgates — try adding pesto and olive tapenade. I NG RE D IE N TS

1 ciabatta baguette or loaf, cut in half horizontally 3 Tbsp. butter 3 medium red peppers 3 cups arugula, spinach or mixed greens, rinsed and patted dry 1 ball of mozzarella, sliced thin 10 oz. assorted Italian deli meats (we used soppressata salami and mortadella sausage) Olive oil Italian seasoning Salt and pepper, to taste 1 Tbsp. capers (optional)

Roast the red peppers: Set your peppers on your cooktop flame, grill or broiler. Cook until they are mostly black, turning as needed. Place the peppers in a plastic Ziploc or paper bag and

let sit for 15 minutes. Remove peppers from bag and peel off the blackened skin. Discard the skin and slice the peppers into wide strips. Place in a bowl and drizzle with a bit of olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Add a Tbsp. of capers, if using. Set aside. Prepare the sandwiches: Butter each piece of ciabatta and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Butter will help prevent moisture from getting into the bread. Place a generous layer of overlapping cold meats. Top with cooled roasted red pepper strips. Tap dry mozzarella slices with a paper towel. Top the red peppers with a layer of the mozzarella slices. Sprinkle generously with salt, pepper and Italian seasoning. Top with a generous layer of arugula. Top with top slice of ciabatta. Wrap each sandwich tightly with plastic wrap and place on a platter or baking sheet. When all the sandwiches are prepared, place the platter in the refrigerator, topped with a heavy skillet or brick. Refrigerate at least 6 hours or overnight. When ready to serve, remove from plastic wrap. Slice into pieces using a serrated knife, holding the sandwich in place while using a sawing motion. • 12 store-bought cookies • 1 pint vanilla ice cream or flavor of your choice • Miniature chocolate chips, sprinkles or chopped nuts IN ST RUC T ION S

Top cookie with a scoop of ice cream. Top with another cookie; press down with the palm of your hand gently to ensure the cookie doesn’t break. Roll sides of ice cream sandwich in chocolate chips, sprinkles or nuts. Wrap in plastic. Freeze until serving.

• 1 store-bought pound cake cake • 1 can of store-bought icing (we used buttercream; try mixing in a package of softened cream cheese or a stick of butter) • Berries • Powdered sugar (optional) N ST RUC T ION S

Cut cake into squares or circles with a cookie cutter. Place icing in a Ziplock. Snip the tip off the corner of the bag to allow the frosting to be piped out. Be careful with how large you create the hole based on how you’d like to pipe out your frosting. Start small; you can always make it bigger. Squeeze a dollop of icing onto each cake bite. Top with berries. Dust with powdered sugar, if desired.

We love making our kids happy, right? Naturally, that includes our pets. While we lick our ice-cream cones or nibble a cupcake, let your pup partake in a delicious, nutritious treat with the rest of the family. Our recipes were created using the healthiest ingredients for dogs, including flour and oats (good sources of fiber that help with digestion); pumpkin (choose 100-percent puree with no added sugar or spices for a great source of fiber); peanut butter (rich in natural fats and protein, but make sure it’s free of Xylitol, a sugar substitute that can be life threatening in animals) and apples (high in vitamins A and C, just remove the core and seeds). To up the cuteness factor, find silicone paw and bone molds on Amazon.

BIRTHDAY CAKE FOR YOUR PUP INGREDIENTS: 1 egg 4 tablespoons peanut butter ½ cup apple chopped fine ½ teaspoon baking powder

INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a ramekin and set aside. Combine all ingredients and mix well. Pour batter into ramekin and sprinkle a few apple slices on top. Bake for 20 minutes.

NO-BAKE PEANUT BUTTER BALLS INGREDIENTS 1 cup pumpkin puree ¼-⅓ cup peanut butter ¼ cup milk or half and half 3 cups oatmeal

INSTRUCTIONS In a bowl, mix pumpkin puree, peanut butter and milk on medium for 1 minute. Gradually add 2½ cups oatmeal and stir. Use a small scoop or spoon to create ¼ inch balls. Roll balls into remaining ½ cup oats to lightly top. Place into a closed container and refrigerate.

PEANUT BUTTER DOG TREATS INGREDIENTS ⅔ cup pumpkin puree ¼-⅓ cup peanut butter 2 eggs 2 ½ cups flour (whole wheat preferred)

INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line baking sheet with parchment paper. In a bowl, mix all ingredients except flour well. Gradually add the flour until the dough isn't sticky. Roll dough into a ball. Lightly flour your surface and lightly kneed. Use a rolling pin to roll dough to ¼-inch thickness. Use cookie cutters and place dough on baking sheet. Bake for 20-22 minutes. Drizzle with peanut butter (optional).

LOCAL PET HERO A FIRSTHAND ACCOUNT OF LOSING — AND FINDING — A BELOVED PET, WITH THE HELP OF A DEVOTED MAN.

Last November, a pet owner’s worst nightmare came true for my family. Our Lab/Poodle mix, Samantha, ran away from a pet sitter who was watching her over a weekend while my husband and I were away. We flew home immediately and put together a search party, but Samantha was not found for eight full, painful days. The pet sitter lived close to the highway, and Samantha was not familiar with her surroundings. While she does have a microchip,

her collar had been taken off so there was no way for anyone to know where she belonged or who she belonged to. After posting on Facebook that Sammie had gone missing, I began getting an influx of messages recommending a local dog trapper by the name of Michael James. I had no idea what a trapper did or that such a person even existed. But exist he does, and here is the harrowing story of Sammie’s safe return, along with the backstory of how she was found. Born and raised in West Bloomfield, Michael has always had a passion for saving animals in need. He is the director of Ferndale-based Help Us, Help Them Dog Rescue (lahpdogrescue.com; previously called Lending A Helping Paw), and one of only 10 trappers throughout the state. He regularly volunteers across Michigan and fosters and rehabilitates animals in his spare time. What Michael taught me was when a dog becomes lost they go into what we call “survival mode,” also known as “fight or flight mode.” It’s as if a switch goes off in their head and the dog’s mentality is no longer domesticated. Unfortunately, once a dog goes into survival mode, they are no longer the pet you know and love. They now are trying to survive solely on themselves as they revert back to their primal instincts of food/water, safety and shelter. Some dogs go into survival mode immediately while others take longer. Because your lost pet might be in survival mode, Michael suggests specific dos and don’ts when searching for him. 1. Focus on how to approach the situation at hand. Consistency and communication are key. 2. Create an 11x17 “Lost Dog” poster that states that the dog is missing and is fearful, and not to approach, call out, feed or chase him. In addition to posting the sign in the neighborhood, post the sign and post on the proper channels including: For The Love of Louie on social media; Facebook, including all lost dog and local community forums within a five-mile radius of where he was last seen; Nextdoor neighborhood app. Do not post the dog’s name or offer a reward, as you do not want the wrong people going after your dog.

Also, you don’t want the dog to leave the area or be chased into oncoming traffic. 3. Let everyone who lives, works or plays in the area, including postal workers, know about the missing pet. 4. Return to where the pet was last seen with a cellular trail camera, the dog’s bed, clothing and scented food to create a feeding station. Set the camera facing the food. 5. If your pet is microchipped, make sure that all of the information is up to date and that you report the pet as missing to the microchipping company. 6. Contact local city and county Animal Control, as well as each police station, up to a five-mile radius. 7. Locate a dog trapper if needed. Michael takes time with the family to reassure and gain trust while learning about the dog’s personality

and temperament. He’s remained close with more than 90 percent of his rescue families. While word of mouth and Facebook are the main ways to reach him, he does take on referrals and many other cases where other dog trappers have failed or in conjunction with them. He does not charge for his advice and/or services, but welcomes donations to his dog rescue. I can’t say enough about getting to know him. It was a miracle that he found Samantha, along with more than 500 lost and/or stray, fearful dogs. It takes a special person to do what he does and he does it purely out of the goodness of his heart. Hopefully, none of you will ever have to endure such a nightmare. But if you do, I hope this information will be helpful in bringing your beloved pet home.
