LIFESTYLE LETTER

The Men's Issue An inspirational man has the incredible power and privilege of shaping and mentoring the young people in their lives to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. Whether they are a father, a coach, an uncle or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a significant impact on us at one time or another. Whether it is someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, someone who sees the best in us, someone we look up to for guidance, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know, but that inspires us by their greatness, we can recognize the impact these role models can make our lives. This month we are honoring men and their contributions to our community. We chose to highlight the men who put themselves second, work hard and inspire others to do the same. To all of the men out there that are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you. The lasting impact you are making and the ripple effect that often ensues is worth it.

THE DETROIT TIGER TALKS FAMILY, FRIENDS — AND BASEBALL.

ROBBIE GROSSMAN

Detroit Tigers outfielder Robbie Grossman says the most interesting thing about him is that he’s “a pretty simple person” — he loves baseball, he loves his family and he loves his girlfriend. Whether or not that’s truly the most fascinating thing about him, Tigers fans are certainly captivated by his solid on-field performance. Last year, his first with the Tigers, Grossman became the seventh player in Detroit history to record 20 or more home runs, doubles and stolen bases in a season. Even more impressive, Grossman started the 2022 season off without committing an error in 377 consecutive games, the longest active errorless streak by an outfielder. One month into the season, that streak remained unbroken. The Tigers signed the 32-year-old player to a two-year, $10 million contract in January 2021. He came to Detroit by way of the Oakland Athletics, spending two seasons there after playing for the Minnesota Twins and the Houston Astros. After signing with the Tigers, Grossman and his long-time girlfriend rented a house in Birmingham, where they live during baseball season. In the off-season, Grossman calls Cypress, Texas, home. When Grossman has a rare moment away from baseball, he prefers to stick close to home, so it’s not unusual to see him hanging out in Birmingham.

ARTICLE BY JENNIFER LOVY

“I enjoy the whole Downtown Birmingham area,” he says. “I can go and grab breakfast at Commonwealth [Café] and walk around. I’ll get breakfast in the morning and kind of make my way through the downtown and just relax. It’s a great city and a nice quiet community that I really enjoy living in.” Grossman also said the food, atmosphere and staff make Tallulah Wine Bar his favorite local hangout. Although the slugger declined to say how often he’s there. “I can’t give too much away,” he adds playfully. “I like to kind of have a private life outside of baseball.” Grossman’s tale of baseball leaving an impression on him during his formative years isn’t unlike any other young boy who remembers going to a Major League Baseball game as a kid. Growing up in Houston, his parents took him to the Astrodome, where he watched some of his heroes play and he told his parents he wanted to play professional baseball. For most, desire and dedication are not always enough to become a professional athlete, but Grossman spent much of his childhood mastering the sport and obviously got the results he wanted. One of those heroes he watched was Astro’s Hall of Famer Craig Biggio. Today, Grossman admires celebrated teammate, Miguel Cabrera, for his competitive spirit and sheer enjoyment of the game.

Grossman, who got to witness Cabrera's recent record-breaking 500th home run and 3,000th career hit, said he looks forward to one day reflecting on his Major League Baseball career with his future kids. In particular, he envisions a conversation where he tells them about "how he got to play with Miguel Cabrera, one of the best players who ever played." The switch-hitting batter said he’s always striving to be the best player he can be and hopes to be an inspiration to other young ballplayers, as his heroes were to him. “I know that every time I step on the field, some little kid is probably watching me, and they’re taking away a good or bad impression of what I’m doing,” Grossman says. “I always have that in the back of my mind, and I know that everything I do is being watched.”

Dr. David Seel’s team at ENT Specialists has patients covered from the neck up. His practice, with locations in Brighton, Novi — and a newly opened office in Bingham Farms — offers adults and children services such as allergy and immunology and ear, nose and throat treatments with six physicians dual certified in facial plastic surgery. An in-house hearing center provides advanced diagnostic testing and the latest in hearing technology, such as digital hearing aids. The Birmingham native has two sets of twins, ages 15 and 18, with his wife, also a physician. The family often heads out West or Up North for snowboarding and wakeboarding; Seel also enjoys hiking, biking and mountain climbing. In addition to his practice, Seel also is an assistant clinical professor for the Department of Osteopathic Surgical Specialties at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. “The best part of our practice is our wide array of treatments and specialties,” Seel says. “We diagnose and treat patients in-house, and, as a result, they don't have to travel outside for testing.” The practice also features a balance center that provides dizziness and vestibular testing. According to Seel, not all dizziness is created equal. Vertigo, for example, is characterized by a spinning sensation and can be diagnosed and treated by various maneuvers in the office. Other dizziness issues may be related to balance. The vestibular system, a combination of inner ear organs, eyesight and muscles, helps maintain the orientation of an individual’s body in space and keeps posture and a sense of balance. The COVID-19 pandemic presented unique challenges for ENT doctors, with patients losing their sense of taste and smell. Interestingly, notes Seel, essential oils have successfully re-trained many patients’ sense of smell. With summer upon us, Seel’s team is geared up to offer relief to sufferers of tree allergens, grasses and pollen. “A big cause of what we see with ENT issues is allergies,” he says.

Tim Smith is the Senior Mortgage Banker at Birmingham’s Level One Bank. But he has also spent decades — 38 years, to be exact — building relationships with builders, realtors and clients throughout Metro Detroit. Smith's specialty as a mortgage originator keeps him busy financing purchase transactions for new custom construction and upgrading ‘tired’ houses. "There is a significant lack of inventory, so people are turning to upgrade older homes," Smith says. He ensures that every deal goes through by anticipating what could go wrong and making sure it never does. And it never has, adding that his devotion to excellence has paid off: A pre-approval letter from Tim Smith carries a lot of weight, a fact he’s proud of. Smith genuinely loves real estate and helping people. He comes by that positive attitude and energy honestly, having been raised by a father who was an eternal optimist. And like many who believe in the power of attitude, Smith has a list of mantras, or Attributes for Success: • Build your brand every day • Stay hungry for the next deal • Take time to work out and stay fit • Focus on the opportunity, not the challenge • Stay adaptable and flexible • Cultivate current trends when necessary • Be willing to change Smith is a huge fitness buff and is frequently at the gym at 4:30 every morning, calling it his “quiet time.” He’s also a former triathlete and participated in intense competitions, including the “Escape from Alcatraz” — an early morning plunge and a 1.5-mile swim in the freezing waters adjacent to Alcatraz Island, followed by a short warm-up run, an 18-mile bike ride and an eight-mile run.

Chris Pero and his family.

Giving Back ARTICLE BY KAREN EISENBERG

Surviving cancer gave this local realtor a new perspective on life — his own and the community around him. Pero on his last day of treatment, Feb. 17, 2020

32

G IV IN G BAC K | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S

Chris Pero

Birmingham resident Chris Pero is not just a husband, father and top realtor in the community. He’s also a cancer survivor whose outlook on life is filled with positive thinking and gratitude. Here, learn more about this local leader who’s transformed a scary diagnosis into an opportunity for growth.

KE: WHEN WERE YOU DIAGNOSED WITH LYMPHOMA? CP: I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in October 2019 and quickly started my first of four chemo treatments on Halloween that year. The timing was rather perfect because I finished my treatments and radiation by February of 2020, right before the pandemic shutdown started. This actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise for me because it gave me the chance to heal at home and get better during the pandemic.

KE: TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT BECOMING THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY’S MAN OF THE YEAR? CP: Man and Woman of the Year is philanthropic competition to support blood cancer research among a group of motivated and dedicated individuals in communities across the United States.

The man and woman who have raised the most funds during the 10-week campaign are awarded the prestigious title of Man or Woman of the Year in their community. It’s really a great way to give back and in the end is really about the money raised for the foundation for research and fighting to find a cure. [To contribute, visit pages.lls. org/mwoy/mi/detroit22/chrispero.]

KE: HOW DO YOU THINK THIS EXPERIENCE HAS AFFECTED YOUR OUTLOOK AND PERSPECTIVE ON LIFE? CP: I’ve definitely become much more conscious about living a cleaner life and maintaining a healthier lifestyle. I eat better, I’ve cut out alcohol completely and I exercise daily. The worst part about getting cancer was having to tell my three children, who are now 19, 17 and 13. The reality is scary and being a father is so important to me. This whole experience has really given me a different perspective on all my relationships and brought me so much closer to my wife and kids. I have come to a place in my life where I am grateful about going through it and I’ve learned that sometimes when a bad thing happens it can turn into a blessing. Essentially, it's all about our perspective and the way we think. Every trauma is a new step towards growth.
