Home. It is meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love and shelter from the outside world—a place where you can let your guard down and just be. Some homes feel just like that, and some can be filled with conflict and strife. It is never too late to change the climate of our homes. In a world that can be cruel, let the home be a place where we build each other up. Make a continual effort to teach with love, correct with love and express love every day. Take time to enjoy all the small moments with family instead of getting caught up in all the daily tasks that can steal our attention away—to be truly present when spending time with our family instead of dividing our attention with our technology or to-do list. Although we usually aren’t perfect at accomplishing these things, it is worthwhile to strive for them every day. March is our Home + Design Issue. Creating a home that you want to spend all of your time in isn’t easy. The memories that are made within the walls of our home are what last regardless of whether our home has the latest trends or if it hasn’t been updated in years. While it is fun to look at beautiful homes and dream about renovations, we all know that the love we share in our homes is truly what matters most. In this year’s Home + Design Issue, we take a peek inside some local homes that boast beautiful designs, provide tips to breathe life back into your lawn after a long winter, check out the latest interior decor trends and spotlight a local roofing company and their philanthropic efforts. From our home to yours, we wish you love, peace and happiness.

SPRING INTO LAWN CARE HOW TO BREATHE LIFE BACK INTO YOUR LAWN THIS SPRING.

12

C UR B A P P E A L | HOM E + DE S I GN

Are you ready to say goodbye to the blistering winter temperatures and transition into spring? Your lawn is, too! As the snow thaws and reveals dull brown grass, it’s easy to feel intimated by the task of getting your lawn back into shape. However, with these five tips from Jon Yandura, certified arborist at Pure Turf & Tree (pureturfandtree.com) in Auburn Hills, prepping your lawn for spring has never been easier.

1. The first thing you’ll want to do is look at your grass after the snow melts. Assess problem areas such as dead or bare areas. Generally, it helps to rake your lawn lightly to clear up debris and get oxygen into any spots with snow mold to eliminate the fungus that may be there. 2. For the larger dead areas, we suggest using sod to cover in the spring. The benefit of using sod in the spring is the rain we typically get will help the new sod integrate into the soil surface, as it needs to be watered daily. Another benefit of sodding in spring is being able to use pre-emergent herbicides to reduce the number of weeds that will germinate. If seed is put down, you cannot use any pre-emergents in those areas, as it will stop growth. Please note that if you are going to sod, the dead grasses must be removed before placing sod in those areas to promote root growth into the soil. 3. As for cutting, ensure you have a sharp blade on your mower and cut high; 3.5” is optimal. When using a weed wacker, it’s crucial to not cut down to the ground as it is detrimental to the grasses and makes it easier for weeds to grow in those areas. 4. It is important to get irrigation running around late April or May after the potential for freezing conditions is over. During this time of year, the temperature promotes more growth of the turf. Frequent light watering is ideal for both growth and disease management, as well as reducing the risk of potential grub damage later on in the year. 5. Finally, using fertilizer will help provide necessary nutrients to your grasses and strengthen the growth of both the roots and top growth.

Chiseled quarry limestone, stucco and steel are in perfect balance in the home’s luminous exterior. Photo by Martin Vecchio.

Todd Emerson has a type. “I like symmetry,” says the founder of Sterling Custom Homes & Renovations in Bloomfield Hills. So when the builder and architectural engineer designed this new Birmingham home, modernized with long soffit overhangs and maintenance-free stone and stucco trimmed with sleek steel, his first focus was curb appeal. He then brought the symmetry inside with a well-designed, functional and organic open layout. The combination of the beauty of the exterior and the easy layout was what really called out to the homeowners. “They told me there wasn’t a single thing they would do differently,” Emerson says. “There’s nothing else feature-wise that anyone could want in the house. It just layed out so well.” Emerson and his team designed the home to the point of drywall, letting the homeowners choose all their interior finishes, “the jewelry of the house,” he says. The couple tapped Lucy Earl, designer and owner of Jones-Keena & Co. in Birmingham.

“The homeowners wanted a very clean, cool, modern aesthetic,” Earl says. “It’s very elegant and understated with small elements of drama. The wife is a very chic, beautiful and glamorous young woman, so everything has a bit of glamour to it.” The main level bar is in the foyer, leading to the kitchen. “When I entertain, the first thing I do is offer guests a drink,” Emerson says. Backlit stone highlights a painting of supermodel Linda Evangelista, which Earl picked up at Robert Kidd Gallery. The home is in Emerson’s own neighborhood, and sometimes he drives by at night. “It’s just so pretty,” he says. “The exterior came out better than I could ever imagine. And the interior is a true tribute to Lucy’s energy and taste. “I’ve built and renovated hundreds of homes,” Emerson says. “But aesthetically and layout-wise, it’s my favorite house I’ve ever done.”

The custom tete-atete chaise is finished in velvet. “This home is a lot about subtle textures and shifts in texture, from smooth to rough,” Earl says. “The chopped stone, the backsplash in the kitchen, the wallcoverings — and then enhanced with beautiful, subtle lighting to make all these textures pop.” 03 // From the entrance hall, the open plan divided by a two-sided fireplace allows a view of everything all at once — a cozy living area with pops of yellow, an intimate seating space on the other side of the fireplace that leads to the kitchen, and the sunroom in the distance. Flecks of charcoal gray quartz sparkle from the chopped black rustic stone fireplace. 04 // In the sunroom, retractable windows by Sunspace are made of glazed vinyl, but are clear like glass, letting the breeze in and the bugs out. Orange pillows add pop to the gray and black theme throughout the house.

Beauty A modern farmhouse brings the outdoors in. 22

O PE N H OU SE | HOM E + DE S I GN

All floors are porcelain and ample windows allow for sunlight throughout the day that glints off the lighting fixtures.

Architect Lou DesRosiers and his associates at DesRosiers Architects of Bloomfield Hills use their creativity and skills to work with their homebuilding clients from the first blueprints until move-in day and beyond. Owner and third-generation architect Lou DesRosiers describes the firm’s newest completed residence in the village of Birmingham as a transitional modern 21st-century Connecticut Farmhouse. The 5,400 square-foot home sits on a corner lot among an eclectic mix of modern and traditional styles on a street lined with old-growth trees. “This home is modern and airy with sleek clean lines and unique gabled roofs that give it that farmhouse feel,” DesRosiers said. “It is cutting edge without being too out-there futuristic. It was designed with the needs in mind of a family with four children who are going to really enjoy indoor and outdoor living in this neighborhood.” Believing that the interior of his homes should invite in the beauty of the outdoors while at the same time sheltering from nature’s harshest elements, Desrosiers designed the home with soaring windows specially insulated to keep the inside warm in the winter and cool in the warmer months. The six-inch thick white stone walls also compensate for ample amounts of glass which drench the home with natural sunlight from the top floors all the way down to the lower level. One of DesRosiers’ favorite features of the home is the drama of the two-storied cantilevered entryway. “The entryway roof comes out from the home’s main facade to protect you from the elements before stepping inside, allowing the eye to see straight through to the back of the property,” he says. “There are not many homes that have this rare quality.” Taking full advantage of this feature in the entry is a three-story switch-back floating tread staircase that ascends through all three levels of the house. Descending through the center of the staircase is a three-story chandelier: a drizzle of luminescent lighting orbs custom crafted by New York’s Shakúff Lighting. Light — both natural and electric — is an important element in DesRosiers’ designs.

“I love how the natural light seeps in throughout the day, from the home’s front foyer in the morning to the back in the afternoon as the sun sets.”

“I love how the natural light seeps in throughout the day, from the home’s front foyer in the morning to the back in the afternoon as the sun sets,” he says. “Glints of sunlight are also captured and reflected off the staircase’s lighting fixture all day long.” To give an element of privacy on the corner lot, DesRosiers created natural private fencing for the side yard with a row of evergreen shrubs to conceal a gracious lawn, a white stone fire pit set into square pavers, plus a pool and attached spa designed by Gillette Brothers Pool & Spa of Troy. The homeowners enjoy this view from their favorite perch: The two-storied arched family room enveloped in floor-to-ceiling windows flows effortlessly into the kitchen and eating area.

24

O PE N H OU SE | HOM E + DE S I GN

Having worked as interior painters for DesRosiers’ firm, the couple tapped the firm when it came to building their own home three years ago. “We were drawn to [Lou’s] tranquil interiors,” the homeowners said. They also appreciate the attention to the home’s practical elements designed for day-to-day family living. Throughout the home, the floors are a mixture of warm black walnut wood and cool porcelain, simultaneously elegant and maintenance-free. “We know our clients love their new home the first time they walk in the door,” DesRosiers said. “We want them to be just as excited every time they come home for the next 20 years or more, to have that firsttime feeling every time they return home.”

For the interior details, the owners worked with Laura Hatcher of Birmingham’s Design Ideology for selecting furniture pieces and Perspectives Cabinetry of Troy to design the cabinets in the bathrooms and kitchen. The lighting in the kitchen and bathroom was supplied by Excel Lighting and the electrical supply of Warren. The uppermost floor of the house features a master bedroom suite plus three en-suite bedrooms, the basement beckons kids and adults alike to play with an entertainment center, a multisport simulator installed by Soundcheck of Southfield, and a wet bar and another separate bedroom suite.

Victor Smolyanov with his wife, Lily

Victors Roofing takes such pride in its workmanship that they offer a leak-free guarantee. Parallel to his work ethic, Victor Smolyanov, owner of the Canton-based business, instills another value in his business: The importance of giving back. “We were brought up as kids that if someone needs help, we help them,” says Smolyanov, whose own family knew hardship, having immigrated from Ukraine in 1996. His father, Vladimir, worked hard to put each of his children through college, but it didn’t come easily. When the family first arrived, they received a charitable Christmas gift program of coats, basketballs and more. In addition to new roofs, Victors Roofing offers complete roofing services — roof repair, roof replacement and the Roof Maxx system, an innovative spray-on technology. The company also is set to launch a brand-new kitchen and bath division. A few years back, while installing a free roof for a veteran, Smolyanov was interviewed by WJR’s Paul W. Smith. On the spot — and on the air — he made a quick calculation on how many roofs his company needed to install to give a free one away to others in need. He made the company’s commitment official that day and launched Give Back with Victors, a free roof program. “If I say it, I have to do it, there is no going back,” Smolyanov says. “I would say we do about 12-16 free roofs a year at this point. For every 100 roofs we replace, we donate one to a family in need. The program scales with every installation, so if we do 2,000 roofs a year, we give away 20. It’s a wonderful feeling that on top of receiving a premium product and experience, our customers also benefit knowing they are a part of a community paying it forward.”

Smolyanov gets the whole team involved when someone gets a new roof, and everyone learns the story. “Last summer, a man with no leg and pancreatic cancer was living with a leaking roof. Every time it rained, he had to move his bed,” he says. “You forget there are people in Michigan who live this way.” In October, the Give Back recipient, a public high-school teacher, was battling the same rare, triple-negative form of breast cancer as one of the Victors team members. “This one was very close to our heart, as the Victors family is a very close-knit one,” he says. Smolyanov and his team learn about people’s need for roofs through various channels. For example, his sales rep tipped him off about a 77-year-old veteran working full time in Kroger and spending his entire life savings taking care of his parents and brother. When he was denied credit for a roof, Smolyanov’s team knew this man would be a perfect candidate for a free roof. “We empower our team to learn about need in the community,” he says. Potential recipients can also be nominated on the company’s website, at victorsroofing.com/giveback. The construction and home improvement industry has benefited during the pandemic, due to people spending more time at home. As Smolyanov puts it, roofing is the “dentist” of home improvement. “No one wakes up in the morning and gets excited about their roof, but you know it has to be done.” Fueled by his company’s success, and ruled by integrity, Smolyanov and his team work even harder to share what they can. Two of the company’s core values are “We Do What’s Right” and “We Care” and are deeply ingrained into the culture at every level. “Always do the right thing,” Smolyanov says. “Even if no one is looking.”
