LIFESTYLE LETTER
New Year, New Look, New Beginnings It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be. This year will be one of continued evolution and growth for me, both personally and professionally. My motto this year is that as long as you are breathing, you should try to be growing in a positive way to better yourself so you can in turn empower others to make our world a better place. One major new improvement we’ve been working on is a brand-new look for 2022! Birmingham Life is now City Lifestyle Birmingham, and the name change comes with an even more gorgeous design for our community publication. We are so excited about our new name and how it will seamlessly tie into our growing online platform. Our January issue is dedicated to health and wellness in the new year: eating right, physical fitness and purposeful connections. The importance of being healthy in body, mind and spirit is the focus of this issue. Our hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, health and love. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things to making a daily decision to act on them. Here's to a healthy and happy 2022!

First-time visitors to Dr. Guy Riekeman’s newly minted Chiropractic Lifestyle Studios (CLS) in Royal Oak may think they wandered into a contemporary art studio or an upscale Starbucks — not their local chiropractor’s office. Sleek design and warm, embracing lighting exudes an artsy vibe that belies a space where practitioners and patients can focus on exploration, self-education, and the art of living a healthy lifestyle. If your idea of chiropractic care conjures up an image of getting your back “cracked,” think again. Patients seek out chiropractors for everything from asthma and allergies to ADD, brain fog, and neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s to pinched nerves, injured muscles and ligaments and sciatica. Good chiropractic care draws from a whole gamut of lifestyle considerations that play a huge role in good health. Still, it all begins with the scientific understanding that the nervous system is the body’s command center. “You are your nervous system,” Riekeman says. The spinal cord and nerves are the main conduit to everything and every organ in your body, including the immune system. Therefore, interference to the nervous system can result in body malfunction, disease and reduced quality of life. Chiropractic (meaning “done by hand”) utilizes spinal adjustments to create proper spinal function to vastly improve nervous system function and overall health. The culmination of a career spanning close to 50 years, CLS was founded by Riekeman to provide the best of natural drugfree health care and lifestyle behaviors. With an emphasis on technological innovation, science-based non-invasive treatment and a patient-centered approach, Riekeman’s primary focus is chiropractic care that will create a healthy lifestyle. In addition to the highest level of technology, patients will also find neuromuscular reintegration machines and specialized adjusting tables. It is one of only 25 such centers in the world. CLS uses available research, with an equal emphasis on the art of practice by the doctor and the patient’s clinical experience and results. Working within the principles of Disney Management, Riekeman makes sure his patients are active participants in their care plans. “We get our patient’s OK, and then we move forward. No sales, no pressure. It’s a partnership here,” he says. Riekeman has spent his entire career educating and empowering patients to make their own healthcare decisions. CLS encourages patients to take advantage of the studio’s app, MLIQ (My Lifestyle iQ ), which supports patient lifestyle goals such as weight control, diet, exercise, mindfulness, brain health and stress management. While Riekeman is the director of Chiropractic Lifestyle Studios, patients can book sessions with Dr. Wes Paten, a graduate of Life University in Marietta, Ga. Specializing in holistic health care, he focuses on the patient’s physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, intellectual, social and environmental health. He cares for everyone from babies to seniors to pregnant women and athletes. “Back in 1977, I created a patient education system while managing thousands of chiropractic clinics,” Riekeman says. He served as president and chancellor of Palmer Chiropractic College in Iowa, then held the same titles at Life University, the largest single-campus chiropractic college in the world, in Atlanta, Ga. “There, I saw unique cases of severe brain and nervous system damage which showed remarkable improvement based on the science of neuroplasticity [the brain’s ability to change and adapt].” Riekeman recounts a case in point, in 2012, where Sydney Crosby, then captain of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins, suffered a neck/head injury — a vestibular concussion to be exact — taking him off the ice, forever. The brain concussion and spinal injury, known as a subluxation, impacted his proprioception — where his body was in space: how he experienced movement, senses and balance. Yet, through a combination of chiropractic care and applied functional neurology, he was back on the ice in weeks. “We bring that brain trust of research and knowledge into our studio and make it available to our patients,” Riekeman says. “People want a healthcare system that reflects their social

JABS GYM BIRMINGHAM
Willie Fortune has a phrase he likes to use — “We make life champions before ring champions.” Known as Fortune 500, or Fortune, in the boxing world, the professional middleweight three-time Detroit Golden Glove champion with 10 knockouts under his belt has fought on HBO, Showtime and more. And 10 years ago, he added entrepreneur to his long list of titles. Fortune, 40, is the founder and owner of Jabs Gym Birmingham (and co-founder of Jabs Gym Eastern Market). The award-winning state-of-the-art training facility, recently expanded by more than 2,000-square-feet, is based on boxing fitness as overall fitness and health. Providing group fitness classes, boxing classes, and personal training (in person and on Zoom), Jabs was one of the first gyms to pivot to outdoor boxing rings when Covid closed gyms down. In addition to offering cardio kickboxing and boxing
techniques round-by-round, Fortune created a one-of-a-kind fitness program called BOYO that incorporates boxing-style yoga, “a yin-yang pairing that is a workout for your mind and body,” he says. BOYO and Jabs encompass Fortune’s overall philosophy in life. He believes that the core values of boxing apply to everyday life — you don’t have to be a professional fighter or want to compete to learn core values to learn self-esteem, to learn hard work and good ethics, which he works to teach to Metro Detroit’s youth as a mentor. He also counts James Franco, Royce da 5’9, Paige Mobley and more as clients, and has partnered with Under Armour, Lululemon, and Athleta. To kick the New Year off on a healthy foot, we asked this mind/ body pro for his top suggestions for health and fitness. Above all, he says, “Self-care is key to succeeding in anything you do. The more you take care of you, the better we can take care of each other.”

FAVORITE WORKOUT MOVES
03 // STANDING TOE TOUCHES WITH A SQUAT JUMP
02 // PUSH UPS + PLANK JACKS
01 JUMPING ROPE // It’s a full-body workout that doesn’t cost much and can be done almost anywhere. I love this because it helps with hand-eye coordination, stamina, and timing. If you don’t have a jump rope, you can do jumping Jacks, power walking, or a simple step up. Use a timer — try 2 minutes on 20-second rest. 02 PUSH-UPS AND PLANK JACKS // Combining these moves targets building the chest, shoulders and core. When mixing workout moves, you’ll find a maximum advantage in completing sets and targeting more areas in a short time. Do one push-up, one plank Jack. If you need to, you may use your knees with the push-up. Complete as push-ups as you can; once you reach your max, hold a plank as long as you can. 03 STANDING TOE TOUCHES WITH A SQUAT JUMP // Combining these moves is a great way to strengthen the core and hip flexors. Squat jumps will help with explosiveness, while the squat hold isolates the legs. Do 10-15 reps, then hold your squat for 20-30 seconds. 04 WALK, JOG, OR SPRINT IN PLACE // Using a timer, start walking in place for 30 seconds, jog for 30 seconds, and sprint for 30 seconds. Walking in place is a great way to get your cardio in without a treadmill or elliptical.

Do five sets of 8-10 reps. 10 KICKBACKS OR LEG CURLS // These keep the heart rate up and act as a great substitute for the jump rope as it’s lighter on the knees.
FORTUNE’S
TOP HEALTH TIPS
01 MENTAL HEALTH // Take time for yourself! Self-reflection and self-meditation are key. Take steps toward a healthier you by practicing affirmations, meditation, and small movements. 02 MAKING TIME // Yes, we all have busy lives, and sometimes adding to it can be challenging. But there are ways to add without overwhelming yourself. Remember that we are creatures of habit, and the more conscious we become, the more active we can be. Instead of elevators, use stairs. While at the computer, set a specific exercise to a few specific words — each time you see the work, do that exercise. An eighthour day can get you 100 reps. 03 FOOD CHOICES // I don’t believe in the word diet. The mindset and the word make you feel restricted, and there is something about restrictions that simply makes

us want it more. So instead of dieting, let’s educate ourselves on better choices and portions. Lots of times, we overeat due to rushing (which brings us back to tip #2). Slowing down, chewing properly and drinking water before meals helps to prevent overeating. Write a checklist of items to have daily — four items from your basic food group list. A veggie, a fruit and a protein. Choose baked, grilled or broiled over fried foods. 04 FIND A GYM OR STUDIO // Today, there are so many workout options. Find a workout that you enjoy so much you look forward to doing it. If you’re self-motivated, you can use machines and free weights. If you love energy and watching motivated people, try group workout training studios or workouts based on competition. Remember, it’s about you. For me, it was boxing, for some, it’s yoga. For others, it’s CrossFit. Each has its benefits. Never be afraid to try.
05 VIRTUAL WORKOUTS // For those who may not be comfortable going to a gym, you can still workout from home. Gyms and trainers have converted to online training and classes. This is a great way to get started in the convenience of your own home. 06 A WORKOUT BUDDY // Find a friend, bring your spouse or even make it a family activity. It’s always great to have someone keep you accountable. It’s why so many people use personal trainers, but that’s not always financially feasible. So finding a workout buddy adds motivation and teamwork. 07 BONUS TIP // Trust in your ability to do! Things don’t happen overnight, but you’ll get where you want to be if you apply these tips. It takes 21 days to develop a habit. Let’s make you, yours.

Pam Vivio and Mijo Alanis
BEYOND JUICE TELLS HOW TO ENERGIZE FOR THE NEW YEAR.

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
GET JUICED! BEYOND JUICERY + EATERY Mijo Alanis got his first job, as a restaurant dishwasher, when he was 15 — by the time he was 18, he was managing the restaurant. Always one to give every customer his all, he did just that when Pam Vivio walked into the restaurant one minute before closing. Vivio eventually married Alanis, and together the pair created Beyond Juicery + Eatery, serving up healthy foods in a fast-casual environment. While business is booming, the focus on healthy, fresh, quality foods and above-and-beyond customer service remains steadfast. Below, Vivio chats about the company and how it contributes to its customers’ healthy lifestyle.
CLB: HOW IS BEYOND JUICE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER SMOOTHIE CAFES? PV: We believe Beyond Juice stands out because we use fresh ingredients, and offer many menu options other than smoothies, such as wraps, juice and salads. We also cater to those with special dietary needs, with vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options.
CLB: HOW MANY STORES ARE THERE? PV: We currently have 37 stores open in Michigan and Ohio. Next year we expect to grow to 50-plus stores with further expansion into Florida.
CITY LIFESTYLE BIRMINGHAM: TELL ME ABOUT BEYOND JUICE:
CLB: HOW DO YOU SUGGEST CUSTOMERS START THE YEAR OFF WITH A HEALTHY SLATE?
PAM VIVIO: My husband, Mijo, and I started the company in 2005. We saw a need for a healthy fast-casual food concept in Michigan and decided to give it a shot. I was traveling to different cities as a consultant and I saw healthy restaurants popping up in other areas, but we didn't have many in Michigan at that time. We targeted the Birmingham area for our first location because it is a high foot-traffic area nestled in a great community. We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the community that has supported us from the start.
PV: We work with a certified nutrition coach and certified personal trainer to develop recipes that are healthy and beneficial to our customers. We offer bundles that help our customers reach their health goals. Our Cleanse begins with a wellness shot followed by a mix of juices made from organic fruits and vegetables. The Cleanse is full of color — like the saying, ‘eat the rainbow.’ The goal is to help your digestive system rest, flush out toxins and detox your body. Our Reboot is a great prep for the Cleanse and is meant to power up your system with clean, plant-based nutrition for the day, helping you CONTINUED >

shift toward a healthier, more sustainable approach to food. Similar to the Cleanse, the Reboot is supplemented with vegan Superfood packets. It feeds your body with whole ingredients and real food that leaves you feeling full and energized while giving it a break from the Standard American Diet (S.A.D). The Immune Booster Bundle is new this year, made up of some of our signature organic bottled juices and wellness shots. Building immunity can take time, so our nutrition specialist created a five-day bundle packed with vitamin C and zinc — great for a boost for the flu season, weather change, travel or general health.
CLB: WHAT’S ONE OF YOUR MOST POPULAR SMOOTHIES? PV: The Dimmer is a customer favorite. It’s a green smoothie blending banana, pineapple, mango, spinach and kale.

The Cold Plunge
Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 30
T R E N D SE T T E R | FITN ESS
Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.
