Welcome fall! With the changing seasons comes a change in what we are craving, and with fall that often means food -- and, of course, Halloween candy! October is our most delectable issue of the year, filled with some of our favorite dishes and beverages. There is an art to creating a flavorful dish that not only satisfies our taste buds but evokes memories. The aroma of certain spices and foods can bring us right back to our childhood kitchen table, which can be incredibly powerful and comforting. This month, be sure to check out our cover story on how to create a rustic farm-to-table feast. We'll also teach you how to cook with fresh herbs and throw a neighborhood Halloween party to thrill kids and adults alike! Plus, because October is estate planning month, you'll find some tips from a pro. As always, thanks for reading, and we’ll see you around town!

Kurtis Kitchen & Bath weighs in on home update trends.
It's hard to talk about kitchen and bathroom trends without acknowledging what the pandemic did to change homeowners' wants and needs. Spending so much more time at home left occupants craving a new, fresh look in their most used spaces. Founded in 1968 by Louis Kuretzky, Kurtis Kitchen & Bath, a third-generation family-owned business, offers services including kitchen remodeling, bathroom remodeling, cabinet refacing, cabinet refinishing and countertops, plus expansive showrooms in Ann Arbor, Clarkston, Livonia, Royal Oak and Utica. During and since the pandemic, the experts at Kurtis noticed an increase in business as homeowners sought updates to their kitchens and bathrooms. Projects range from changing the color of the cabinetry — white being the most popular — to doing an entire remodel. "Not only does it feel good to have a new and refreshed look, but it helps with resales on homes down the road because kitchens and bathrooms are the things that sell homes,” says Renee Colohan, director of marketing for Kurtis Kitchen & Bath. “So even just a little upgrade can make it feel new and add life to the space.” The company, which has completed more than 400,000 kitchen and bathroom remodels, stays on top of the latest trends through contact with its professional trade organization, vendors and the company's experiences working with a high volume of homeowners over the last five decades. It also is happy to give back to the community by donating old cabinets in good shape to Habitat for Humanity. Here are some of the biggest trends in kitchen and bathroom remodeling, according to Colohan.

Walk-in-pantries became one of the most requested features of 2022. The pandemic changed people's shopping and cooking habits, creating a greater demand for more storage space. Designers have also gotten clever with walk-in-pantry layouts, dedicating a working space for small appliances which would otherwise take up precious counter space. Quartz countertops in kitchens and bathrooms are a hot item right now. Its durability, extensive range of colors available, and uniqueness make the material suitable for almost any remodeling project. Customized backsplashes have been around for a long time, most commonly behind a cooktop and the space between the countertop and cabinetry. Trends range from classic white subway tiles to bold patterns. Bathroom trends, in general, include glass shower doors and double sinks, with popular finishes being satin, polished or brushed nickel. Homeowners want anything to give the space more functionality and an updated look. Get rid of the bathtub. Colohan says some homeowners are opting to remove the tub from the master bath and install a stand-up shower. People have become especially fond of showers with seats, she says. Because planning a kitchen or bath remodel, or even a reface or refinish, can be overwhelming, Colohan advises homeowners to work with a creative design consultant. A designer can recommend materials that complement each other and make the process of redoing a kitchen or bath much more manageable. “We help our customers update their kitchens and bathrooms in a way that best suits their taste and budget,” Colohan says, “using the highest quality product and an incredible design team.”

Set the table with fresh-cut herbs and hand-picked wild flowers — we chose Queen Anne’s lace, mint, sage, lamb’s ear, lavender, nigella and geranium.
PEACH BREAD PUDDING • 1 loaf brioche • 5 fresh peaches • 2 tablespoons sugar • 2 tablespoons butter • 2 cups milk • 1 cup heavy cream • 5 eggs • 2 teaspoons cinnamon • 2 tablespoons brown sugar • 2 teaspoons vanilla Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cut bread into 1-inch cubes. Dice peaches into medium dice. Place peaches, white sugar, and butter in saucepan. Cook until sugar is dissolved and peaches are soft. Mix all other ingredients together. Spray a 9x13-inch baking pan and add peach mixture with brioche pieces and then add milk mixture. Bake for 45 minutes. Let cool for 20 minutes before cutting.

SALTED CARAMEL SAUCE • 1 cup granulated sugar • 6 tablespoons salted butter, room temperature and cut into 6 pieces • ½ cup heavy cream • 1 teaspoon salt Heat sugar in a medium saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly with a spatula or wooden spoon. Sugar will form clumps and eventually melt into a thick brown, amber-colored liquid as you continue to stir. Be careful not to burn. Once sugar is completely melted, immediately add the butter. Be careful in this step because the caramel will bubble rapidly when the butter is added. Stir the butter into the caramel until it is completely melted, about 2 minutes. If you notice the butter separating, remove from heat and vigorously whisk to combine it again. Very slowly drizzle in 1/2 cup of heavy cream
while stirring. Allow the mixture to boil for 1 minute. Remove from heat and stir in 1 teaspoon of salt. Caramel thickens as it cools. Cover tightly and store for up to one month in the refrigerator. EL AHUMADO BY CORDIAL CRAFT A signature cocktail elevates every party, from backyard barbecue to formal sitdown dinner. This one is lightly sweet and pleasantly bitter. • • • • • •
1½ ounces Reposado tequila ½ ounce aperol ¾ ounce lime juice ½ ounce agave nectar ¼ ounce luxardo cherry syrup 1 spritz of Mezcal

FROM GHOSTLY GOODIES TO PETRIFYING PUMPKINS.
ASK EACH PARTICIPATING HOUSE TO SET UP A HALLOWEEN KIDS GAME IN THEIR FRONT YARD Are you looking for some fun new ways to celebrate Halloween with your kids this year? How about a neighborhood contest? Costume contests are just one of the many options to get everyone in the spirit. Read on to see if one of these wicked ideas grabs you. CRAZIEST COSTUME – Pass out fliers inviting all the neighborhood kids to meet at your house an hour before trick-or-treating begins. Give everyone a name tag when they arrive. Then each child and adult can fill out a voting slip. Include categories like best costume, scariest, funniest, most creative and more. Hand out a special prize to the winners of each category. And don't forget a small consolation prize for all children who participate.
MOST GHOULISH YARD – Invite everyone in the neighborhood to join in a decorating contest. You could have a few categories, such as scariest, cutest, silliest and best overall. Set a decorating deadline (Oct. 21, for example) and provide delivery instructions on the flier so every house in the neighborhood can vote for the addresses they like best. Also, mention that neighbors should view all the homes after Oct. 21 and deliver their votes to you by a specified date. Ask some of the participating neighbors to help you make up fun 'Scariest House' and other signs. Then post them in the yards of the winning homes. CONTINUED >

FUNNIEST CARVED PUMPKIN – Ask the neighborhood to join you in a carved pumpkin contest. You can schedule a date and time when everyone will meet with their pumpkins at your home or a neighborhood park. Suggest everyone who participates pitch in $2 per pumpkin for a jackpot. To keep it fair, allow only one pumpkin per child. Prepare numbered cards in advance so each pumpkin will have its own number. Then have everyone fill out a voting slip. The carver of the winning pumpkin gets the jackpot. You could also pass out small goody bags for all the kids who participate. FUNNEST HALLOWEEN GAME – Hand out fliers to everyone in the neighborhood or on your street to hold a Halloween game day. Ask each participating house to set up a Halloween kid's game in their front yard. Participating homes can give out small prizes such as stickers or treats to each kid who plays their game. Kids can wander the neighborhood playing the games for the afternoon. When they're done, have each child fill out a ballot for the most fun Halloween game. Then post a chilling homemade sign in the yard of the winner.
EACH PARTICIPATING FAMILY SHOULD BRING A HALLOWEEN THEMED FOOD OR DESSERT.
SCARIEST SCARECROW – Ask your neighbors to participate in the scariest scarecrow contest. To keep the scarecrows safe until voting, set a specific day when the scarecrows should be displayed in everyone's yards. Have everyone in the neighborhood, whether they participate by making a scarecrow or not, hand-deliver their vote to you by the end of the day that the scarecrows are set out. Then deliver a fun Halloweenish homemade yard sign to the winning home. CREEPIEST FOOD – Hold a simple neighborhood potluck Halloween party. Each participating family should be instructed to bring a Halloween-themed food or dessert. Place a numbered card next to each dish. Then have everyone fill out a ballot for the cutest, grossest, funniest and scariest food. Once the winners are announced, take photos of the families next to their creepy food. Then everyone can dig in and eat the yummy dishes and treats.

Herbed Popcorn
Garlic Herb Butter
There’s nothing like taking in the crisp, green aroma of a freshly snipped herb, and that scent, of course, flavors your food, too. Plus, fresh herbs are bursting with benefits — they’re filled with nutrients that you can’t get from a salad. Herbs like basil, chives, dill, garlic, rosemary, even lavender, have the power to perk up your mood, help control cholesterol and relieve a cough. They are rich in antioxidants, aid with digestion, fight infections, increase mental function and so much more. Garlic Herb Butter Use this versatile butter on bread, popcorn, veggies, sandwiches and more. • ½ cup unsalted butter, room temperature • 4 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped • 1 tablespoon herb of your choice (try dill, basil or oregano) • 1 clove garlic, chopped • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice • ½ teaspoon salt • Cracked pepper to taste Add all ingredients to a food processor (or mix by hand in a bowl). Transfer butter mixture onto parchment paper or plastic wrap. Cover tightly and roll into a log. Refrigerate until firm. Herbed Popcorn • 3 tablespoons coconut oil (or olive oil) • ¾ cup popcorn kernels • 5 tablespoons butter, melted • 2 teaspoons garlic salt • 2 teaspoons parsley (dried) • 1 teaspoon thyme Add oil to the bottom of a pot and warm over medium heat. Add popcorn kernels and place lid on top of the pot and heat over medium heat until kernels are popped, shaking pan occasionally. Melt butter in a separate dish and add seasonings. Pour on top.

Herb Salt Herb salts (shown on opposite page) can be made in endless flavor combinations, are a handy staple in the kitchen — and make great gifts. • 1 cup salt of your choice (try Himalayan pink salt) • ¼-½ cup parsley (more if using fresh herbs) • 2 tablespoons dried basil (¼ cup if using fresh) • 1 tablespoon oregano • 1 tablespoon lemon zest • 1 garlic clove minced • Optional: Add additional herbs of choice Add fresh parsley, garlic, lemon zest and a bit of salt to the blender or food processor. Mix for 10 seconds. Add additional ingredients and blend again. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and pour salt mixture on sheet and spread evenly. Dry overnight in a cool oven. Store in a container. Chimichurri Use this condiment as a sauce or dip — serve over fish, chicken, vegetables or with crackers. • ½ cup olive oil (try flax oil for added omega 3) • 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar (or lemon juice) • ½ cup-1 cup fresh parsley, chopped finely • ¼ cup fresh basil or fresh cilantro • 3-4 cloves garlic, minced • 1 small red chili or 1 tablespoon red pepper flakes • ½ teaspoon dried oregano or Italian seasonings • 1 teaspoon salt • Pepper to taste Chop fresh herbs finely and add to a bowl. Add remaining ingredients and mix. Chill for 1-2 hours.

Estate Planning 101
EDUCATE YOURSELF ON THE BASICS, WITH ADVICE FROM THE PROS.
Kristen M. Bedient with her family.
This year’s National Estate Planning Awareness Week takes place Oct. 17-23 — and we are celebrating by learning the basics from the pros. Awareness Week was adopted in 2008 by the NAECP (National Association of Estate Planners & Council) with a simple goal: to help the public understand what, exactly, estate planning is and why it is a vital component of financial wellness. In essence, estate planning encompasses the growth, conservation and transfer of an individual’s wealth through the creation and maintenance of an “estate plan.” “Our goal is to make estate planning easy to understand,” says Kristen M. Bedient, managing attorney at Estate Planning Legal Services, PC (EPLS), based in Metro Detroit with offices and attorneys throughout the state and the country. With concentrations in estate planning, elder law, trust administration and probate, Bedient works with each client to develop a strategy to maintain financial security for their own lifetime — and ensure the intended transfer of their property and assets at death, while also taking into consideration any of the family’s unique circumstances as well as the potential costs of different methods.

Typically, Bedient says, an estate plan will encompass a Trust, Pourover Will, Financial Power of Attorney, Medical Power of Attorney, Medical Directive, HIPAA release, Ladybird Deed, as well as business assignments, funeral/ burial instructions and other important documents regarding end of life decisions. Bedient finds the work rewarding, as she’s truly making a difference in people’s lives. “I love seeing how relieved my older clients are once they’ve completed everything and I know we’ve expressed all of their wishes within the documents,” she says. “I also love working with younger families and ensuring they’ve selected guardians for their minor children, so that their families are protected, should something happen unexpectedly.” Below is a quick hit list of Bedient’s most important suggestions for anyone considering an estate plan. To speak to an EPLS attorney, call (248) 435-0400 or visit eplspc.com.
Kristen M. Bedient TOP TIPS 1. Avoid Probate (the public legal process by which property from an estate is transferred to the heirs of a deceased person or persons) by creating a revocable living trust. 2. Preserve your Assets: Complications to assess include the need for a “Spendthrift Trust” — which further protects your assets when going to a child who poorly manages their own assets; or a family member with a disability, who needs to be protected and cared for. 3. Create Powers of Attorney, meaning designate an agent to make both financial and medical decisions for you should you become incapacitated. These documents exist so loved ones can avoid the need to petition the court for guardianship and conservatorship, saving time and money.
