Dean Thurman

1

How does working as a financial advisor influence your leadership?

Like a doctor or attorney, clients of a financial advisor seek to be led. We approach

each unique client situation and ask ourselves: “What would I do if I were the client myself?”. Then, we lead our clients down a path of financial success that may look different for each client. It is a big responsibility, and one we cherish.

2

Biggest lessons learned within the past year?

I’M DEAN THURMAN. I am the Co-Founder and Senior Partner at InvestWise Financial, LLC.

Everyone’s life is unpredictable, no exceptions. It is easy for anyone to

manage their own finances when life is perfect, but when disruption happens people need experienced professional guidance. When disruptions such as a divorce, unexpected job change, retirement or a pandemic happens, most people need an advisor that is present and on point.

3

What inspires or drives you?

Striving to be the best husband, father, boss and advisor I can be. At InvestWise,

we consider ourselves work family. Many of us at InvestWise have been together for decades. We truly enjoy and respect each other both personally and professionally. That, plus such wonderful relationships with our clients makes coming to work not

4

seem like work at all. Working with such amazing people and serving the community is a huge inspiration.

What is your greatest accomplishment? Besides having loving family and friends, assembling a team approach financial plan-

ning practice. I believe none of us are as smart as all of us. We typically have more than one professional on each Zoom or in-office appointment. This approach is quite rare in our profession, but I believe it leads to the best results for our clients. The team approach also assures our clients that if the lead advisor becomes unavailable for any reason, the client will still have someone that is very familiar with their situation available.

CHEF LUCIANO DELSIGNORE

OWNER OF BACCO, BIGALORA AND CASA PERNOI If you’re a native Detroiter, you already know about Chef Luciano DelSignore. With successful restaurants such as Bacco and Bigalora under his belt, his next natural step was to open Pernoi, a fine-dining establishment in Birmingham. This white-tablecloth gormandize, along with its strict dress code, was intended to bring gourmet dining to a whole new level. Though it opened to rave reviews and made a strong impression on the restaurant industry, Pernoi was forced to evolve

once COVID-19 hit. To survive, DelSignore made a quick decision to provide carry-out with more comfort-type foods. His once super-fine dining pivoted into a pop-up trattoria with homemade pastas, flat breads and chicken parmesan. Now rebranded as Casa Pernoi, diners can eat inside or out and dress however they like. Carry-out is still offered — and in that case, you can just wear pajamas. Visit Casa Pernoi at 310 E. Maple Road, casapernoi. com or give them a call at 248-940-0000.

PARTING THOUGHTS THERE ISN’T A MASK NOR SHIELD THAT CAN SHELTER US FROM THE TENSION THAT THIS PAST YEAR HAS CAUSED

ARTICLE KARIN EISENBERG

From those who felt quarantining was excruciating and others who feel it’s given them awareness to real joys they’ve experienced from removing certain activities and routines. While I feel pretty confident saying that we’re over the word, “unprecedented,” the level of emotion surrounding divisiveness in family and friends is at an unprecedented height. Whether it was social media, a lengthy text thread, a planned or cancelled event, there isn’t a mask nor shield that can shelter us from the tension of this past year. The Washington Post wrote an article in February,
