Magic (and Magical) City. What is December? Glowing lights in the darkness, a glass of red wine by a crackling fire, the warmth of a favorite sweater and the hugs of a family gathering. We thoughtfully give gifts, continuing centuries-old traditions linking us to our religious beliefs. We take a break from our everyday lives of work and busy-ness to reminisce, to celebrate, to plan for the year ahead and hopefully — at

some point — to just be still. To me, there is nothing that embodies the spirit and the magic of the holidays like the story of Granny Betty in this issue. I'm thrilled to share this story with you, as it is a personal one for me. Betty opened her extensive Rolodex to me — a know-nothing recent college grad — after a college trip to India had me obsessed with all things international. I believe her interest in my interests helped set the stage for many of my future endeavors and successes. The magic of one person, one story, one kindness, one gift, one trip. I hope we all take the time to notice the magic surrounding us this December. And maybe we

TO

BIRMINGHAM IN THE LATE 90S, A FRIEND INTRODUCED HIM TO FRANK STITT, AND HE SPENT SEVERAL HAPPY YEARS WORKING AT CHEZ FONFON AND BOTTEGA, THEN HIGHLANDS BAR & GRILL. “I was blessed to work with Frank,” he commented. Born in Northern Italy near Verona, Marco humbly insisted he is “not a chef or a sommelier — just a lucky guy who’s worked with amazing people.” Those people, by the way, range from Frank to Roberto Mazzola, a Michelin-starred Italian chef, to others in locations like London and Bermuda. Fast-forward to 2019, when Marco and his brother, Luca, shared dreams to open a place all their own: a pizza restaurant, given Luca’s ability “to cook pizza like no one else.” Though plans were forced to shift when Luca stayed in Italy, the brothers’ vision has continued to blossom. Today, Le Fresca serves fine Italian cuisine, including pastas, seafood dishes and, of course, authentic pizzas, cooked to perfection in their imported Neapolitan oven.

In a food processor, blend all ingredients for the cookie garnish until combined. Scoop onto a baking sheet and bake at 300F for 30 minutes. 2. Bake the sweet potatoes at 350F for an hour and a half to two hours, depending on size. 3. If making your own dough and not purchasing fresh dough from a store, make dough and wrap in plastic wrap, then set aside to rest. 4. Once the potatoes are at a manageable temperature, peel the skins off and scoop the potatoes into a food processor. 5. Season potatoes gently with salt and nutmeg, add the whole egg, then puree until smooth. 6. Roll out pasta dough until desired thickness — the thinner the better. 7. Fill the ravioli and seal. 8. Drop the pasta into boiling salted water until raviolis are floating. 9. In a saute pan, simmer water butter and sage with ravioli until sauce emulsifies. 10. Garnish with grated almond cookie. 18

GIVING BACK

GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my

family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have

otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy
