JIM MCCALL FIRST LAID EYES ON THE '34 ROADSTER IN 1988. It sat unfinished in the corner of a garage he had visited to purchase another classic car, with parts strewn around it and piled inside. He purchased it at the end of 2003, then spent the next four years assembling and restoring until it became the head-turning vintage auto seen today. Born with the "car bug," Jim McCall always exuded an affinity for automobiles. As a young child, he looked forward to each September when the car manufacturers unveiled their newest models, riding his bike throughout Billings from dealership to dealership to see them. He

"McPassion" only rivaled by his passion for his wife, children and grandchildren. Jim passed away last year, but his cars remain a testament to his dedication, hard work and flair for standing out in a crowd.

The appeal of the Wild West beckoned, and they loaded all of their possessions into an old pickup truck. Interestingly, the truck they used to begin their life in Montana was bought with money earned from muskrat pelts, a small hint at the future that lay in store for the Oars. “We had no idea what we were getting into or how I was gonna make a living out here. But I just had a feeling that, by God, I can do it. I can get it done.”

It would just take a little bit more luck to turn his tanning into a lucrative business. “Black Powder Rendezvous, they called them,” Tom says. “They were recreations of the old fur-trade days in the Rocky Mountains when all the trappers would meet in one spot.”
Feeling well at home amongst this like-minded crowd of mountain men, he finally discovered a niche for his handmade wares. And when Tom does something, he is certain to do it well. “The most prestigious clothing that you could wear at one of these rendezvous is brain-tanned buckskin clothing,” he says. Patrons immediately sensed the incomparable quality of the brain-tanned hides Tom provided, and the hides began to sell at a remarkable rate. Tom found his peace. Together, Tom and Nancy defied the odds. Danger lurked, isolation taunted, and the bitter chill of Montana winter bore down upon them;

For Ben Harman, his restaurant is that outlet. “I love producing results, tangible results, that you can hold, or touch or even eat,” Ben says. “But I can’t imagine anything more unfulfilling than never sharing these creations.” He credits his ambition to the public he serves. “It has continued to amaze me how much of this is about other people and how necessary their role is in my passion for what I do … I guess I was always destined to share myself with others one way or another. This restaurant has been that path.” Along with his wife, Krystal, Ben has founded a business that is impacting the community in many diverse ways. “This little business reaches farther than I could have ever known,” he says. “The connections we’ve made with customers and producers, to staff members and other like-minded chefs …The way in which we lessen our impact and waste by recycling and sourcing locally, to cooking honest food from simple ingredients. We really try to create a culture of positivity, respect, growth and accountability.” Ben hopes the future will bring a chance for self-improvement, as well as more opportunities to help shape the local scene. “My goals for the future are plenty,” he begins. “Learning how to be a better boss, continuing to grow in my communication with others and how to achieve those things by living a more balanced personal life are some of the more immediate goals. Long-term, I would like to continue to be a part of Billings’ growing culture and community. And I have some ideas…” LIFE LESSON “It’s pretty cliche, but if I can do it, you can do it. I am my only roadblock to my dreams. I can do anything I want, so long as I am willing to do the work and trust.” 22
