TURE. Climate-sensitive greens and other veggies need warmth and sunshine to thrive, commodities that are hard to come by for much of the year.

“At first I thought the idea was silly,” says Veronnaka Evenson, co-founder

and owner of Swanky Roots. “I mean, growing greens year-round in Montana just didn’t seem feasible.”

Yet, Veronnaka and her mother, co-founder and co-owner Ronna Klamert,

implemented a system for growing and supplying produce to their community throughout the year. “My mom had been researching natural ways to get rid of pests in her current hobby greenhouse, and on the side an advertisement for Nelson & Pade came up,” Veronnaka says. Nelson & Pade specializes in aquaponics, a sustainable method of raising fish and vegetables. “She did some research on the company and on aquaponics before showing it to me… the more I looked into the system and the design, the more I fell in love.” It seemed like fate for Veronnaka and Ronna. Veronnaka boasts two Bachelor of Science degrees, one in plant science and one in agricultural education, as well as a minor in biology teaching. When her mother first approached her with the idea of using aquaponics, Veronnaka was nearing graduation from Montana State University in Bozeman. “I like to joke this was my mom’s idea to keep me here forever!” Veronnaka says. “I feel like it’s one of those rare occasions where everything I’m passionate about combines into one business.” The driving force behind their vision for the business has been community. “We could’ve done this on a much smaller scale and just provided ourselves and friends with fresh greens. Instead, we wanted to make sure that everyone has access to local, fresh, healthy food all year round.” Swanky Roots’ moniker was derived from Ronna’s maiden name Swanke. Although their primary focus has been leafy greens such as lettuce, Swanky Roots grows kale, Swiss chard, bok choy, cabbage and celery. “We also have tomatoes, and plan on expanding to include more tomatoes, onions and cucumbers,” Veronnaka says. “While some of those we might not be able to produce in a wholesale quantity for a while, we will have more of those specialty items at our storefront. We are in Lucky’s Market with some of our lettuce, and we hope to see it expand.” Another important aspect of their company is education. “We offer tours of the greenhouse to show the aquaponic process and why we are so passionate about how we grow our greens,” Veronnaka says. “I feel there is such a distance between the food we eat and where that food comes from.” In addition to year-round production, aquaponics offers the opportunity to grow a head of lettuce with seven times less water than traditional methods, without the use of any pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers. Now, Veronnaka and Ronna want to make their presence known. “We have been keeping our heads down for the past few months as our system was maturing,” Veronnaka says. “We wanted to open our doors with the best product possible, and we are finally ready for that. There are so many options other than just romaine and iceberg to get greens into your life. I want to create a community space where people can learn about agriculture and get great products. There is a real sense of peace that comes from watching the plants grow, from start to finish.”

The first Saturday in May is steeped in tradition—tradition that spans across two centuries and culminates in an event referred to as “the most exciting two minutes in sports:” the Kentucky Derby. There is an undeniable appeal to the Derby, as it embodies so much of what we love about this season: freshly picked roses and newly awakened greenery; bright, crisp fashions and cheery spring hats; the luminous warmth of the sun as you enjoy a picnic; and of course, parties. A Derby Party is the pinnacle of outdoor elegance and a prime opportunity for fun, as crowds dress to the hilt whilst sipping mint juleps and admiring powerful thoroughbreds. Billings Lifestyle wants to capture this spirit and celebrate with the community by hosting its inaugural Signature Event: The Billings Derby Party! On May 4, attendees will be treated to an afternoon and evening of food, drinks, live music and entertainment. Multiple vendors are scheduled to delight throughout the day, such as a slow-motion video booth, a caricature artist, cigar rollers and more. Visit the barn to view various horse breeds on display. For those who want to indulge in a bit of gambling, there will be a Derby Winner Auction. Half of the total raised for the Derby Auction will go to the three separate winning bidders for Win, Place and Show. The other half will be donated to the nonprofit organization for this year: the Yellowstone Boys & Girls Ranch Foundation. Even a losing bet this Derby Day aids a worthy cause! Making an Impact, Multiple Channels Proceeds generated by the Billings Lifestyle Signature Event will benefit the Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch Foundation. The Foundation supports the emotionally troubled children and families served by Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch through charitable works and fundraising. These efforts support such endeavors as construction and maintenance of campus buildings, initiating new treatment programs, and serving at-risk children in the community. “The Foundation also provides for the longterm financial security of the Ranch by building endowment through tax-wise charitable planned gifts,” says Bill Hritsco, president/general counsel of YBGRF. Through Bill's expertise, we delve into some of the channels your donation may take once it is bestowed upon the YBGRF. RESTRICTED OR UNRESTRICTED? “Generally speaking, funds are either restricted or unrestricted,” Bill says. Unrestricted funds are directed to the Ranch’s most urgent and pressing needs by the Foundation. “We are currently in a focused campaign to raise $90,000 to replace the roof on the iconic Chapel on the Ranch’s campus,” he says. SPECIFIC NEEDS “Restricted funds are those raised or dedicated to a specific need or program at the Ranch,” Bill says. “Whenever we are raising funds for such specific purposes, those funds are sent to the Ranch upon completion of the campaign and used immediately to accomplish the specific objectives. We provide reports back to major donors demonstrating our stewardship of their gifts and the success in funding the particular project or program.” 22

DESCRIBE THE PIECE IN THE PHOTO. WHY IS IT UNIQUE? It's a farmhouse-style headboard we made out of solid wood and hand painted and stained. This headboard was made for my niece's bedroom to help give it the more "grown-up" look she wanted. A headboard is the first piece we ever made, and it was for a guest bedroom in my house. We decided to list the headboard on Craigslist for fun, and we have been going ever since! HOW DID YOU CREATE THIS PIECE? We get raw lumber from local hardware stores that we cut to size depending on the size of the headboard. The size is determined by the bed size: full, queen, king, etc. This specific headboard is queen size done in farmhouse style with a distressed white finish. The cut boards then get sanded smooth before they are assembled. Once assembled, the headboard gets stained dark gray. The final step after painting the headboard white is to hand-distress, allowing the contrasting stain to show. There is added trim framing the center area and accenting the upper portion of the head-

I got into this business really to focus on and rejuvenate the love of mechanical timepieces. DESCRIBE THE PIECE IN THE PHOTO. WHY IS IT UNIQUE? My Magnum GMT Watch. I love doing small-volume projects focusing on different themes like James Bond, Gulf Racing and in this case, Magnum P.I. A featured item in the original series is the Rolex GMT Master II “Pepsi” that Magnum received from his father. I wanted to make an homage to this watch but also focus on the other items found in the show… Magnum was a Detroit Lions fan and also wore a Paradise Found shirt. I found an original shirt and a custom fabric to build a 28

travel pouch for the watch with both items. I sourced all the parts from the automatic GMT movement (which allows the wearer to keep two times) to the dial, hands, bezel (which I applied a Superluminova paste to add glow), brushed stainless case and stainless band. Custom logos completed the project. I limited this to 10 pieces. WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS? I always start with a storyboard and try to get my ideas down, then create the custom logos on my iPad. I source a supplier to build the logos. I find all the parts for the watch build, then source the materials for the travel pouch and (for this specific timepiece) work locally with Red Oxx to create the dog tags with Magnum’s info.
