How to Prepare Your Parents for the New Year Ahead The New Year brings in new traditions and resolutions. It also brings new frustrations, worries, and struggles, especially if you are caring for an elderly parent. Try a different New Year’s Resolution this year: less stress. Here are a few tips to relieve stress in the new year when caring for elderly parents.

TAKE INVENTORY: Take inventory of the medications your parents are taking and their schedule. Are they taking different medication than they were last year? Is the dosage different? Sometimes even saving their medication schedule in your phone for future reference can relieve stress if something unexpected comes up.

GET FAMILIAR: Get familiar with your elderly parent’s physical and mental limitations. Are there any physical limitations that they didn’t have last year? Maybe they are struggling to carry heavier things or need more help with housekeeping then they did before. Do they remember appointments and dates as well as they did before? All these things can be stressful, but being prepared for it and making a plan can make the situation less difficult.

ASK FOR HELP: You don’t have to go this alone. There are many options for in home care for when you can’t be there to assist them. If they need help 24/7 or just 2-3 hours a week, a trained caregiver can assist them whenever they need it. Your health is just as important as theirs. If you are over extending yourself to take care of your loved ones, looking into a caregiver could relieve some of the stress in the coming year.

From-Scratch Pasta Yield: 1 pound WHAT YOU NEED

2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 4 large eggs WHAT YOU DO

1. Mound the flour in the center of a work surface with a well in the middle. Crack the eggs into the well and beat with a fork until smooth, then work flour into eggs with the fork. Use a bench scraper to work in the rest of the flour a little at a time. When the flour is incorporated, form the dough with your hands into a rounded mass for kneading. Lightly dust your workspace with flour and knead dough about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover dough with a bowl or plastic wrap and rest 1 1/2 hours, or chill overnight. 2. To roll by hand, flour a clean work surface. Vigorously roll dough to a very thin circle and roll constantly with even pressure as it stretches for several minutes until as thin as possible, almost translucent. 3. To cut by hand, lightly fold sheets one at a time into thirds and cut to desired thickness. Recipe from MarthaStewart.com.

1/2 cup heavy cream 8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 cup cocoa powder, for dusting WHAT YOU DO

1. Bring the cream to just a simmer in a saucepan over low heat. Pour the cream over the chocolate in a bowl and let stand about 10 minutes to melt the chocolate. Add the vanilla, stir until smooth and set aside to cool for 1 hour at room temperature. 2. Beat chocolate at medium speed until thick and light-colored. Spread over the bottom of a baking dish, smooth and refrigerate 2 hours until firm. 3. Pour cocoa powder onto a deep plate or shallow bowl, and using a melon baller or small ice cream scoop, scoop out balls of chocolate. Roll in cocoa powder until coated and transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Recipe from FoodNetwork.com.

My name is Jennifer Carnahan and this is my Thrive Experience! Let's get real a minute. Some raw truth to share. Broken.... pick one word to describe yourself and I would have picked: broken. I have faced many life challenges and many of them haunt me constantly picking at me from the inside out. So to feel better I made fun of myself, ate constantly, gave to the point of nearing bankruptcy, forced smiles and social interactions, gained weight, lost more confidence, the list can go on...The summary: I felt like crap. Enter Thrive (which I knew I did not need and gave my friend heck about "trying" it) and I felt no different... for three weeks. She assured me to keep going and I did. Thankfully I did. At three weeks I slept soundly all through the night. I started waking up refreshed, I started smiling (for real), I became less "reactive", I was thinking more clearly, weight started falling off, and life's challenges just seemed easier to handle. I may be broken, but Thrive is my glue. From the inside out it has been working to fill each crack and bring my pieces back together. I am becoming WHOLE for the first time.
