HER CAMPAIGN PREMIER 5K RUN/WALK SET FOR SEPTEMBER 24 The Her Campaign will be conducting its third annual Run For Her on September 24. This event will raise money for the Her Campaign, which fights human trafficking. The race will start and finish at the Josephine Crossing Park (corner of Lost Creek Road and Front Street). s fall dawns, many are turning to a warm, rustic look for home décor. Those interested in this unique style of decorations need

to look no further than Bethany and Jonathan Walters of She Likes Letters, who have become local experts in custom, do-it-yourself ornaments, cupcake toppers and wall hangings. Demand for the pair’s designs is booming, with sales coming directly from their Etsy site. Although their wood-carved decorations combine tasteful design with natural simplicity, the process for making them is far from basic. Jonathan starts the process at the source: the forest. After gathering wood, he stores it near a furnace, so it dries out. In addition to the quality of wood, the type of wood is important for the final products’ designs. “We’ve found that oak is not a good medium because it is dark,” Jonathan says. “I try to select a wood species that I know is going to be good for (Bethany’s) work.” After drying the wood, Jonathan takes branches to his woodshop, where he saws timber into a variety of sizes. After sawing each piece to one of his preset sizes using a makeshift measuring device, the wood is sanded to provide a smooth surface for marking. Next, Jonathan hands the wood canvases off to Bethany. First, she examines the pieces for spits and cracks. After choosing quality pieces, she drills a hole in the outer edge of the carvings. the creation step depends on the product. To make her renowned cupcake holders, Bethany takes a dot of glue and places it in the freshly drilled hole. Then she inserts a toothpick in the glue-lined hole, fastening it to the wood canvas. Prior to assembly, Bethany’s artistic skills really come into play. She uses markers or paint to freehand designs on each wood canvas. Her drawings usually depend on the unique requests of customers. “I always do the artwork first because it’s hard to do it straight if the eye-screw is already on it,” Bethany says. For

Bethany also freehands her designs. When she is finished, an eye bolt is fastened to the wooden slab. It is important to make sure the size of the hole lines up precisely with the size of the screw to avoid slipping or damaging the base. “Our whole process of developing these projects to where they are has very much been through trial and error,” Jonathan says. Finally, twine or ribbon is connected to wall hangings through the hole of the small eye bolt. Bethany ties and cuts the ribbon or twine, the pair packages their custom crafts and they are shipped off to their final destination. The final product is a unique, trendy homemade product, adding a natural flair and rustic feel to desserts, Christmas trees and homes.

illings is quickly becoming a fashion-forward town and a blossoming site for the newest trends. This style-savvy mindset is partially a result of the

area’s many growing design businesses and local fashion experts. Billings Lifestyle had a conversation with three local fashion leaders who have a combined total of more than 50 years of experience in the fashion industry: Katie Ellis, owner of Bottega Clothing; Lisa Wyss, owner of RocHouse (formerly Meridian Ltd.); and Denice Johnson, owner of Neecee’s. The trio gave their observations on trends in Billings, fun and not-so-fabulous fads, the evolution of fashion and what to expect this fall.

HAVE YOU SEEN FASHION EVOLVE IN BILLINGS?

Lisa: Well, fashion obviously has evolved. When I opened 18 years ago, there wasn’t a lot of selection. I think women are having more fun with their wardrobes. I think they’re willing to step out of their comfort zone a little more than they were in the past. Katie: For sure, styles come and go. It’s the fashion industry recreating styles and tweaking them. The industry has gotten so much smarter about materials. Fits are a million times better than when they were around initially.

Denice: I love that women can keep abreast of fashion trends because of the internet and social media. I’ve seen a surge in local women being more cognizant of fashion and trends, and we love it. HAVE YOU SEEN ANY TRENDS COME BACK AROUND OVER THE YEARS?

Denice: There is nothing new under the sun, so it makes sense fashion evolves back again but always with a little tweaking. Lisa: For instance, in the fall we are seeing unique prints that might go back to plaid. Plaid has been a trend for a long time, but now there's a unique twist in it for fall, putting it into more structured pieces. Denice: The bohemian look is a great example. Old '70s styles updated with new fabrics and embellishments have been strong this summer. High-waisted pants are once again making a comeback. Long tunic tops have been in style for quite a while, but now they are designing them with a slimmer fit, a little shorter, and you might tuck the front into your jeans with the back hanging out. What is now skinny will widen; what is long will become short and vice versa. It is fun to watch. HAVE YOU HAD ANY TRENDS THAT SURPRISED YOU?

Katie: I would say, with shoes, a lot of shoes have been bulkier or a block heel. When they first started doing them, they looked a little odd and bulky, but now I do love a little bit of the block. Now it’s one of my favorite things. Denice: We’ve seen recently the attempt to go back to more structured fabrics that don’t have stretch in them. Denim with no stretch. Dresses that are made of stiffer fabrics. It will be interesting to see how our guests receive this. ARE THERE ANY TRENDS THAT YOU HOPE TO NEVER SEE AGAIN?

Denice: Personally, I’d rather not see the shoulder pads of the '80s, but they can still be a very flattering addition for some women. Katie: Anything that’s like a capri, a really awkward just below the knee pant, is not my favorite. It’s just not a really flattering length on anyone. Lisa: For me, honestly, I feel women should wear what they look and feel good in. There are trends that CONTINUED >

ne man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Well, in this case, “woman’s.” When you have an eye for style like Bethany Carey, co-owner of High Trash Boutique, treasures can be found in the most humble places. “I love finding things at garage sales and thrift stores over buying things from a store,” Bethany says. From furniture to books, she has a knack for uncovering previously loved items that bring richness and character to a room. A Montana native, Bethany moved to Bozeman nine years ago to be a self-proclaimed “skibum.” After meeting her husband and having their first child, they moved to Livingston and bought their home. When her second child arrived, she wanted a business that would allow more time with her family and lend the opportunity to create and decorate. That’s when she and her sister decided to open their own store in the downtown area. “High Trash is a collaboration of a women’s clothing boutique and redone furniture or garage sale finds,” she explains. “We also have local artisans selling art, jewelry, pottery and unique barn wood creations.” The store opened its doors in May 2017 and has been a bright new adventure for the sister duo. High Trash is casually elegant, showcasing Bethany's style savvy and understated sophistication. Her love for decorating began at home. She and her husband embrace an eclectic mix of colors, patterns and textures that please the eye and create a warm, inviting atmosphere. Some of her favorite pieces are garage sale scores, refinished and smartly displayed.
