Tips for Approaching Elderly Loved Ones With the holidays coming up, many of us will be spending more time with elderly family members. This may be an opportunity to address some pressing questions and tasks, some of which might concern the rest of the family directly. Visiting with parents, grandparents, and other elderly family members over the holidays can sometimes leave us at a crossroads. For instance, mom or dad might not be in the same health condition as the last visit, whether in a physical or mental capacity. Considering whether a loved one needs homecare can be mentally taxing and

emotionally draining and should take a wide range of factors into account. Chances are, it will become apparent if your loved one is not as independent as they used to be. However, the next step can be the more difficult task. Approaching a loved one about the possibility of homecare is a touchy, and emotional subject. Remember to broach the subject with sensitivity and care. Your loved ones must feel that their opinions are being considered if their mental capabilities are up to the task.

Here are a few tips to consider when discussing the option of homecare with your loved ones. • Focus on your loved one during discussions and keep him or her involved.

• Keep in mind that it may take some time and multiple conversations to come to a consensus.

• Voice your opinions using “I” statements.

• Don’t blame others or use “You” statements.

• Keep all discussions with your loved one positive.

• Don’t try to accomplish too much in one discussion.

• Be assertive but respectful.

A Season of Giving

s we turn the page of this year’s calendar to December, it seems like it was just yesterday we were singing carols, unwrapping gifts and toasting to 2017. Now—as unbelievable as it may seem—it’s time to do it all over again. The holiday season and the end of the year always bring about a feeling of reflection and a feeling of closure. Whether we’re jumping head first into the spirit of the season, enjoying time with family—no matter if the distance is near or far—or reflecting on the past year while making plans and setting goals for the next, December always has a way of keeping us busy. While shopping for the perfect gift, prepping the perfect dinner or crafting the perfect toast can all become a little overwhelming, we encourage you to take a deep breath, take a step back and take in all the moments, memories and people that have made 2017 what it is. When you’re reflecting on everything this year has brought, we also encourage you to reflect on those who haven’t had the benefit of people, memories and moments to make 2017 a year to remember. Those who are in need of a family to spend the holidays with, those who can’t afford to buy gifts and prep the perfect dinner, and those who may not even have a home to go back to. Just as much as December is a time of reflection and closure, it is also a time of giving to those who haven’t been as fortunate. It’s a time to find ways to make the holiday season as special as it can be to those who haven’t seen 2017 as very special. Whether it’s volunteering your time at local shelters or donating your money to local charities, giving back to the Billings community can help make this time of year special for everyone.

CHRISTMAS STROLL A tradition in the Billings community for a quarter century, the Christmas Stroll celebrates the season on the first Friday in December, in conjunction with ArtWalk. BREAKFAST EXCHANGE CLUB OF BILLINGS TO TAKE PART IN DRESS A CHILD For more than 25 years, the Breakfast Exchange Club of Billings (BEC) has been a part of the Salvation Army’s Dress A Child event that takes place annually in December. In past years, BEC members have shopped with 50 or more children in need of necessities, such as winter coats, hats, mittens, shoes and clothing. This year, BEC members will shop with 70 children. SPECULAAS COOKIES A traditional Dutch spice cookie, Speculass has long been a Christmas time staple at Billings bakery Caramel Cookie Waffles. Typically made in molds, these cookies can also be rolled and cut much like gingerbread.

INGREDIENTS 2 cups brown sugar 12 ounces unsalted butter, softened 3 ½ cups flour 1 egg, beaten 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/3 teaspoon clove ½ teaspoon nutmeg ½ teaspoon allspice ½ teaspoon ginger 1 teaspoon salt

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Cream brown sugar and butter together in a large bowl. Add egg and combine. 2. In another bowl, sift dry ingredients before combining into butter mixture to create dough. Chill for at least 15 minutes. 3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F before rolling dough and cutting with cookie cutters. You can also use a wooden cookie mold in the traditional Dutch fashion. 4. Bake for 12-15 minutes until edges are golden brown. CONTINUED >

CRANBERRY ALMOND SQUARES A favorite of chef Rich Boggs, this recipe pairs bright cranberry with almond and festive white chocolate. “Cranberries have such a holiday feel,” he says. “They tend to be overlooked in desserts, so these bars are sure to stand out as a party treat or gift.”

INGREDIENTS 2 eggs 1 cup sugar ½ teaspoon almond extract ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 1/8 teaspoon salt ½ cup butter, melted 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 2 cups fresh or frozen cranberries ½ cup chopped pecans 1 cup white chocolate chips

INSTRUCTIONS 1. In a bowl, beat eggs, sugar, extracts and salt. Add melted butter and combine. 2. In another bowl, combine flour and baking powder before gradually adding to the sugar mixture and mixing well. Fold in cranberries and nuts. 3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Transfer mixture to a greased 13-by-9-inch baking pan. 4. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown. 5. While still hot, top with white chocolate chips, let sit for 5 minutes and spread to create topping. 6. Allow to cool fully before cutting into bars.

WHEN CHRIS MONTAGUE, OWNER OF MONTAGUE JEWELERS, THINKS BACK TO A CHILDHOOD GROWING UP IN BILLINGS DURING THE HOLIDAYS, HIS MEMORIES RACE TO DECORATED STREETS, FESTIVE LOCAL BUSINESSES AND FRIENDLY FAMILIAR FACES.

Now, as a business owner himself, he continues the age-old Billings tradition by decorating his own shop—like his downtown predecessors— with his kids by his side. Today, the event is called the Christmas Stroll, and it stands as a time-tested mark of community, togetherness and a cheerful entry into the holiday season for locals. “Everybody talks about Black Friday, and that’s all well and good, but I really like the feeling of the Christmas Stroll,” Chris says. “To me, that’s when the season really kicks off.”

A tradition spanning more than 24 years, the Christmas Stroll coincides with Billings’ ArtWalk on the first Friday in December. In a celebration meant to bring in the holiday season, the event features a range of Christmas-themed activities, tastes and beverages. Families have a chance to take pictures with Santa while strolling through the area’s decked-out local businesses. The community-focused tradition is highlighted by food trucks, hot cocoa, roasted nuts and Christmas tree sales. When Chris reopened his business downtown more than a decade ago, he says he was excited to participate in the community celebration. “In 2004, we reopened downtown,” he says. “We jumped in with both feet our first year being back downtown.” He also relished the opportunity to contribute his own flair to the event. He turned to his wife’s family recipe for eggnog and started offering it at the event. In the years since, his holiday treat has become a hot commodity and a Christmas Stroll staple. “Everybody was doing something different and fun,” he says. “We decided to do eggnog.” Chris' drink has become so popular, in fact, that he now gets up on the morning of the event, cracks more than 75 eggs and prepares the beverage in water cooler-sized jugs. Throughout the day, his kids will even run delivery orders to other local business owners who are too busy to get away from their shops. “It has sort of taken on a life of its own,” he says. “It’s a whole day’s production. People come down just for the eggnog.” Although the eggnog has become a distinct feature of the Christmas Stroll, Chris is quick to point out the true value of the event stands in the message it promotes within the Billings community. 22

“I really appreciate the Christmas Stroll and what it means for local Billings,” he says. “It lets people know that downtown businesses are open for business and we love participating in the community.” In addition to serving his traditional eggnog, Chris will kick off this year’s event with a celebration a half-hour before the Christmas Stroll for Montague Jeweler’s 80th anniversary. He says the Christmas Stroll is a good reminder to value local business–a theme that is also at the core of his 80th-anniversary celebration. The 2017 Christmas Stroll will run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, December 1 downtown.

10 eggs 4 cups milk 2 cups sugar ½ cup cream Nutmeg, for garnish Cinnamon sticks, for garnish ¾ cup bourbon, optional INSTRUCTIONS
