We’ll Drink a Cup of Kindness Yet The Christmas decor is being packed away and Auld Lang Syne is finally getting its skip-free moment on that holiday playlist. Maybe it’s just the 90’s kid in me, but that old tune of keeping friends and family close always gives a little of Semisonic’s “Closing Time” as we turn the lights out on another year. Both the 1790s classic and the 1990s hit share one thing in common—it’s a little melancholy to see the holiday party shut down. But being in a place like Bentonville, there’s so much to be excited for in 2025. For starters, our collective calorie count is about to return to a healthier baseline after a month (or more) of guilt-reduced indulgence. In these pages, we’ll highlight some of the Bentonville locals who want to walk alongside you into a healthier 2025 and help us all be a little kinder to our bodies. We’ll introduce you to a doctor who wants to help you see the functional side of healthcare—from the grocery store to the trailhead—so that you can feel your best, doing the things you love, for years to come. We’ll give you an inside look into some of our favorite services at ZIVEL that can help you recover between rides, workouts, or just to decompress after a strenuous day. We’ll take you inside san studio and introduce you to its founder, Alexandra Hesse, who is passionate about curating a space that helps your mind feel as refreshed after a workout as your body does. Our friend, Dr. Allyson Mertins, wants to help you see 2025 clearly and look fantastic doing it, and Dr. Missy Clifton at Premier Dermatology wants to be sure your new frames are always set on a backdrop of glowing, healthy skin. Bentonville has everything you need to make this year your healthiest yet, inside and out, and we’re excited to showcase the services that you’ll want as staples in your wellness journey. You don’t have to go home but you can’t stay in 2024. How exciting is 2025, though? Happy New Year!

"Probably the biggest innovation at san is its unique methodology." If you were to merge the airy ambiance of coastal Australia and the luxury of urban New York City, with the stylish wellness culture of Los Angeles, what would you get? Something akin to Alexandra Hesse’s san studio and boutique in Downtown Bentonville. The Aussie-native found herself launching Bentonville’s premier XFormer Pilates studio and lifestyle boutique rather organically. A career in branding brought Hesse to the States where she met her husband, Matt, while working in New York City. “I was working at a global communications agency in Sydney running the brand marketing team,” Hesse shared. “My side-hustle was a meditation retreat business, however, I always knew I wanted to live and work overseas and gain international work experience.” When the agency she worked for transferred Hesse to its New York City office, the intention was to spend a few years in

the States before returning home, but fate had other plans. “After meeting my husband and having two children in NYC, we decided to head to Los Angeles during the pandemic,” she shared. “It was during this time I was freelancing and thinking about my next chapter. I’d always built other people’s brands but I knew I wanted to do it for myself one day.” According to the san studio founder, it was her husband’s entrepreneurial and military background that connected the Hesse family to Bentonville, and ultimately watered the seeds of her business idea. “My husband is an incredible entrepreneur and served in the US Army. He knew of Bentonville as he was a vendor for many years, selling sports nutrition products to Walmart and later running research pilots for his Veteran’s Foundation at War Eagle. When he decided to build The University of Health and Performance for transitioning Veterans, he happened to find an incredible property outside of town, and CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . before I knew it, we packed up the family and moved to Bentonville!” It wasn’t until after settling into the Bentonville community that Hesse recognized the opportunity for a brand like san. “When we moved here three years ago, the first thing I did was try and find an XFormer studio, having done it for the last ten years in NYC and LA. The closest one I could find was in Tulsa, then a light bulb went off! I saw an opportunity to bring something I loved to this community.” With her branding experience and wellness background, Hesse had a great foundation for launching san. She set out to create something that would be more than just an innovative workout experience, but also a space for building community. In contrast to the typically cold and masculine studios many are used to, Hesse opted for a Scandinavian-inspired design that is both beautiful and serene. “Probably the biggest innovation at san is its unique methodology with three key elements: Sculptural, Spacial and Soulful, which represent the integration of body, mind, and spirit,” she explains. “When it came to naming the studio I wanted a name that wasn’t prescriptive; that encouraged curiosity about its meaning.” The name “san” and its logo come from the Chinese word for three. In addition to specializing in XFormer Pilates, Hesse wanted to offer an upscale boutique experience where Pilates lovers [like her] could shop the seasonal, active apparel and loungewear brands they live in like Varley, Splits59, Eterne, and Beyond Yoga. Vibrant and cool are great words to describe what you feel when you leave san

studio. Every aspect of the experience has been mindfully curated for maximum wellness. The tone for each class is set with breath work and binaural beats to reduce stress, and sync mind and body for focused stretching and strengthening. These holistic elements, in addition to professional staffing and premier equipment, are what distinguish san from other local Pilates offerings. “I wasn’t sure how people would react but they absolutely love these elements, and they notice how they leave feeling energized and grounded as opposed to depleted and fatigued,” she explained. “What I love about the XFormer, is you can always continue to challenge yourself and never plateau. With the springs adding resistance, it truly is a full body, low impact workout that will build strength, core stability, balance and flexibility.” So how does an XFormer Pilates instructor, business owner, wife, and mother of two set herself up for success each day? It starts with a lot of water and a flat white coffee. “My husband and I take turns doing school drop off – the mornings I’m not doing the school run, I like to start my day with some form of movement,” she shares. “I take that time to set my day up for success, whether it’s on the treadmill at Blake St responding to emails and prioritizing my must-do’s for the day, or switching off and making that mindbody connection in a san class.” Before family dinner and quality time, Hesse’s days are a mixture of teaching classes, merchandising and managing apparel for her san boutique, meeting with brand partners, and optimizing business operations including work on a second san studio location. san studios “Currently, I'm looking at expanding across NWA - I have clients who drive from Rogers and Fayetteville just to visit san," she said. “I also have many clients who visit from out of town who tell me san is better than their local studio, so my long term vision is to create a franchise so other people who are just as passionate about my methodology can open their own san studio.” For those interested in XFormer Pilates, san studio offers an introductory three-pack, which is perfect for trying each of their class formats: sculpt, strength, and stretch. NEW YEAR, Great Skin DERMATOLOGIST, DR. MISSY CLIFTON, DEBUNKS SKINCARE MYTHS AND SHARES HER PREMIER TIPS FOR A HEALTHY AND YOUTHFUL GLOW.

What is the single best thing we can do to improve the health of our skin? The single most effective action you can take to improve the health of your skin is to protect it from the sun. Exposure to UV rays can lead to premature aging, wrinkles, and even skin cancer. Therefore, wearing a daily sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection is essential. Choose a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and make it a part of your morning routine, regardless of the weather.

Are there any common skincare myths you'd like to debunk? A prevalent myth in skincare is that manual exfoliators, like brushes and scrubs, are necessary for healthy skin. While exfoliation is important, manual exfoliators can often irritate the skin, leading to redness and inflammation. Instead, consider chemical exfoliants such as Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) and Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA), which gently remove dead skin cells and promote a smoother complexion without physical abrasion.

“The single most effective action you can take to improve the health of your skin is to protect it from the sun.” 18

S KIN CA R E | BEAUTY

What is your favorite non-invasive skin health hack? One of my favorite non-invasive skin treatments is BroadBand Light (BBL) therapy. This treatment involves no downtime and effectively targets redness, brown spots, and fine lines while stimulating collagen production. BBL is a versatile option for those looking to improve skin tone and texture without undergoing invasive procedures.

What do you consider the GOAT skincare product or treatment? When it comes to skincare products and treatments, retinol and SkinPen Microneedling stand out. Retinol is a powerful ingredient known for its anti-aging properties, helping to reduce fine lines and improve skin texture. On the other hand, SkinPen Microneedling is a treatment that promotes collagen production and can address various skin concerns, including scars and hyperpigmentation.

Do skincare supplements really work, and if so, what should we be looking for? Skincare supplements can indeed be beneficial, but it's essential to choose the right ones. Nutrafol Skin is praised for its comprehensive formula. Look for supplements containing Vitamin A, DIM, and Vitamin C antioxidants, as these ingredients support skin health from the inside out, promoting a clear and radiant complexion.

What is the most effective regimen for treating hyperpigmentation from sun or pregnancy? To treat hyperpigmentation caused by sun exposure or pregnancy, a comprehensive regimen is key. Daily sunscreen with zinc oxide is crucial to prevent further pigmentation. Additionally, consider microneedling combined with lightening products such as hydroquinone, tranexamic acid, or Alastin A-Luminate to fade existing spots and even out skin tone.

Tips for acne control and blemish treatment? When dealing with acne, it's important to avoid over-scrubbing or over-exfoliating, as these can exacerbate the condition. Resist the urge to pick at blemishes, as this can lead to scarring. Instead, use treatment products containing Benzoyl Peroxide (BPO) or salicylic acid, and incorporate a retinoid at night to promote skin renewal. For a more advanced solution, AviClear offers promising results in reversing acne.

SOBER Sipping Wines FOY BRINGS BALANCE TO WINE CULTURE ARTICLE BY MICHELLE BAZIS PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHELLE BAZIS & CAROLINE STELTE

“They don’t drink to get drunk.” Sharing a bottle of FOY Chardonnay, Caroline Stelte, founder of the dealcoholized wine brand, opened up about her year in Italy and the season of her life that ultimately led to her launching. “I’ve been sober since January of 2023, but I'm just sober because of choice,” she shared. “I used to live in Italy, and I fell in love with the drinking culture there. They drink for occasion, with intention. So I adopted that mindset when I moved back to the States.” The FOY brand is the perfect amalgamation of Stelte’s life experiences. She got her first taste of entrepreneurship growing up on

a property used as a wedding venue, and having been bitten by the Boss-Girl bug, she opted to attend the University of Life, which prompted her year abroad. Taking her world by the reins as a professional photographer, she later found success working with brands as a ‘dog-mom’ content creator and serendipitously assimilated into sobriety via a wellness challenge. “In January 2023, I did the 75 Hard Challenge,” she explained. “You don’t drink on that challenge, and that was easy for me, but when I stopped drinking, I tried a lot of NA wines or beers. I thought, ‘Wait, this is not good. Why?’ The high calorie count and sugar pushed me into wanting to do my own.” Prior to this challenge, Stelte had celebrated her 21st birthday with family in Healdsburg, California where she met Daisy Damskey of Palmeri Wines. “When I reached out later asking if she would be interested in helping me create a non-alcoholic wine, she said she and her husband are retired but her son, Drew, might be interested.” Thankfully, Drew Damskey didn’t respond to Stelte’s idea with the resistence one might expect from purist winemakers. “I’m Gen Z, and we’re on track to be the most sober generation, so it was refreshing to hear that he agreed with me on the need for NA options,” she said. “Drew had to teach me how to describe what I wanted. I don’t like sweet things, so he chose to go with a Chardonnay, but the plan is to do a bunch of varietals in bottle and can versions.” Stelte and Drew Damskey set out to create an NA wine product that not only tasted great, but is also low in calories, and allowed customers to enjoy the same rituals they know and love about wine culture - like de-corking the bottle. “When you want to enjoy a glass of wine, but don’t want to be hungover, you’re going to drink FOY.” "It’s not about shaming alcohol," she explains. "It’s about balance. There’s a new term called ‘zebra striping’ where you alternate between alcoholic and NA drinks. That was Drew's goal: To have a regular bottle of wine and a bottle of FOY on the table, and interchange it."

Dr. Michael Henderson offers a path to optimal wellness by merging traditional medicine with a functional approach to prevent illness and maximize vitality. 26

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | HEALT H + WE LLN E SS

TRAILS TO HEALTH: FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE CONCIERGE Between 2020 and 2023, I was a certified holistic nutritionist–an achievement born out of desperation moreso than interest. In short, I was sick of being sick, and traditional medical solutions just weren’t working. During this time, I absorbed countless hours of lectures, books, research, and podcasts produced by functional health educators and lifestyle medicine practitioners like Trails to Health Founder, Dr. Michael Henderson. Naturally, when it came to the Wellness Issue of Bentonville City Lifestyle, I was eager to pick Dr. Henderson’s brain about why he decided to shift from his safe and cushy career in traditional medicine to opening a concierge-style, functional medicine clinic in Bentonville. “I had it good,” he shared. “But there was this pressure to see more patients in a short amount of time. As a physician in traditional insurance-based healthcare, the more time you take with them, the less you’re reimbursed.” Dr. Henderson explained how traditional, western medicine rewards physicians for having unhealthy patients. “The sicker the patients are, and the more meds you prescribe, the more money

you get. My patients wanted more, so I got certified in lifestyle medicine in 2023. It got to the point where I knew how to help them, but I literally couldn’t in that model.” Dr. Henderson’s wife and son are living with type 1 diabetes, so there’s no denying his appreciation for western medicine. His shift to lifestyle medicine isn’t a snub, but rather, a mission to provide a more balanced approach to healthcare that utilizes the best of both traditional and functional medicine to treat the whole person. “Our body is not an instrument, we’re an orchestra,” he said. “There has to be harmony.” Recognizing the limitations of his environment, Dr. Henderson started creating educational resources and tools for patients interested in lifestyle medicine, which can

most easily be described as a preventative approach to health with functional, everyday life applications. *This is why we often see the terms lifestyle medicine or functional medicine used interchangeably. “I’ve just been on a search for truth,” he said. “How can I help individuals apply the laws that govern the body to achieve harmony in their health and life?” It was during a spring break trip that Dr. Henderson discovered the unicorn that is Bentonville and felt he had finally found a place where a functional medicine practice could thrive. “The people here are just genuinely kind people who give hugs and handshakes, and will talk with you on the porch for hours,” he said. “It seems a lot of individuals here have a strong interest in health and healthcare innovation.” CONTINUED >

WHAT MAKES MERTINS UNIQUE?

My goal was to provide a personal, boutique experience for my patients and eyewear customers. I also wanted to bring handcrafted, luxury eyewear to NWA because I realized there was a huge, unmet demand.

YOUR FAMILY LOVES MOUNTAIN BIKING - EXPLAIN THE IMPORTANCE OF VISION CARE FOR ATHLETES. We are very passionate about mountain biking! All of my children have raced in the Arkansas NICA League, and my husband and I helped start Buffalo Devo., a youth development mountain bike team. 20/20 vision is critical for safety and peak performance, and eye protection is also of utmost importance for all cyclists.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO IMPROVE OUR EYE HEALTH?

See your eye doctor on a regular basis. Don’t sleep or swim in contact lenses. For those who spend time on screens, follow the 20-20-20 Rule: Every 20 minutes, focus on something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

WHAT ARE SOME PREVENTATIVE TIPS FOR HEALTHY VISION AS WE AGE?

Wear sunglasses that block 100% UV when outdoors, maintain an ideal body weight, eat dark green leafy vegetables, take Omega 3 supplements (in the triglyceride form), and exercise for at least 30-minutes per day. Most importantly, don’t smoke. Bottom Image: Mertins Eye & Optical is located in the breezeway of the Ledger Building in Downtown Bentonville
