LIFESTYLE LETTER

Happy New Year!

January 2026 PUBLISHER

Jane Rial | jane.rial@citylifestyle.com

I love hitting the reset button this time of year. Time to fine-tune my new year resolutions, let go of the things that didn’t go right last year and get excited about the new possibilities I hope for in the year ahead. With the “New Year, New You” theme, we’ve dedicated this issue to Health & Wellness, with helpful tips from several trusted healthcare professionals who partner with Bend Lifestyle, as well as a story on how living in alignment with our own personal values promotes our health. And, for ideas to make your New Year’s celebration and Super Bowl gathering festive and healthy, be sure to try our mocktail recipes for non-alcoholic drinks with a nutritional boost. We are so grateful to our partners and to all who contributed to Bend Lifestyle over the past year, and to those who will be part of our community in the coming year. Here’s wishing you a New Year filled with health, joy, new opportunities and adventure!

Before you read this, look in the mirror. Your skin tells a story, and paying attention to its changes can make all the difference in protecting your health. Have you noticed: • Changes in the shape, size, or color of a mole or freckle? • A new blemish larger than 1/4 inch, with uneven edges, multiple colors, or asymmetry? These could be signs of melanoma or another form of skin cancer. Early detection is critical— melanoma, when identified early, is highly treatable and curable. Left unchecked, it can spread and pose a serious threat to your life. Take the time to examine your skin regularly, and if you notice anything unusual, consult a dermatologist without delay. Protecting your skin is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to safeguard your overall health.

• May is Melanoma Awareness Month • Spot Melanoma / Skin Cancer Early.

At Peters Dermatology Center, we specialize in the prevention, early detection and treatment of skin cancer. A skin check can provide peace of mind and, if necessary, a pathway to recovery. Let us help you take control of your health with confidence and care.

YO U R H E A LT H I E S T YEAR YET Expert Tips from Local Healthcare Pros – Mind, Body and Everything in Between

ARTICLE BY LYNETTE CONFER

As we head into a new year, Bend Lifestyle magazine took a moment to check in with a few of our trusted local healthcare professionals who partner with Bend Lifestyle—people who spend their days helping us feel our best. We asked each provider the same two questions (see below), knowing their answers would reflect both their expertise and the real-life habits that keep them healthy and grounded. What they shared is thoughtful and practical. Their advice and tips offer a little something for everyone looking to start 2026 feeling healthier. Questions we asked our providers: 1. If you could share just one healthcare tip with our readers, what would it be? 2. What is your favorite way to manage stress and maintain overall health and fitness for yourself?

RICHARD MAC DONELL, MD – MYMD PERSONAL MEDICINE

MyMDBend.com | 541.322.6869 My tip is to talk to your doctor! Who better knows your personal struggles and wellness goals and can deliver an evidence-based holistic approach to health? Some may rely on AI and the internet, but the deluge of options quickly becomes overwhelming and difficult to navigate on our own. At MyMD Personal Medicine, our approach is to slow down. You spend time with your personal Board Certified Internal Medicine MD who gets to know your specific healthcare needs. Together you create a comprehensive wellness plan for today and years to come. Finally, my favorite ways to manage my own stress and maintain overall health and fitness is to exercise, meditate, socialize, dance and play music. And, after all that, I take a nap!

LAURA MEANEY, DNAP, PMHNP, CRNA – SOUL PSYCHEDELIC SYSTEMS

SoulPsychedelicSystems.com | 541.668.6350 If I could share just one health tip, it would be to not ignore your mental health and well-being. We often put ourselves way down on the priority list, but now is the perfect time to put yourself first and listen to your body. Our bodies always tell us when we are stressed and pushing too hard. Start your day off with a moment to meditate. This simple practice can offer comfort and stability to our mind and bodies. My favorite way to manage stress is to meditate and work on my own issues that need attention so that I can put my best foot forward. This one practice has made such a difference in my life. Start with a few minutes per day, then work up to 15-20 minutes. By taking some time for ourselves, we can give more to others. Photo credit: Natalie Stephenson

GERALD E. PETERS, MD, FAAD, FACMS – PETERS DERMATOLOGY

PetersDerm.com | 541.323.7546 Protect your skin daily by using a mineral sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Other important tips include washing your face gently twice a day, moisturizing, avoiding smoking, and eating a healthy diet to maintain skin health and function. It’s also essential to perform monthly skin checks and see a dermatologist regularly for professional exams to detect any issues early, including skin cancer. Maintaining my own health is essential – not just for my well-being, but so I can show up for my patients. I manage stress and stay balanced by keeping things simple and consistent. I make it a priority to eat nutritious meals, take time for daily prayer and unwind with a good book. I also take my exercise outdoors, whether it’s hiking or biking. Being in nature is honestly my favorite form of stress relief.

DENISE HICKS, DDS – CENTRAL OREGON DENTAL ESTHETICS

OregonEsthetics.com | 541.526.5661 My tip for the new year is to make healthcare part of your daily routine. Set reminders if needed to take five minutes out of your day for your oral health. Try to couple new habits with current existing habits. Especially if it is something enjoyable. For example, if you want to try to floss more, get a cordless water flosser and keep it in the shower to use daily. When it comes to prioritizing my health, I find that I decompress best outside in fresh air. I find that some form of physical activity, especially outdoors, helps me focus, relax and release tension. My favorites are walking, running, yoga or weight training in my living room with my three dogs supervising! Photo credit: Maile Mason

KYLIE WASSERMAN, DDS – THREE SISTERS SLEEP

ThreeSistersSleep.com | 541.797.9136 If I could share just one healthcare tip, it would be to never underestimate the importance of quality sleep. Restorative sleep impacts every system in the body from cardiovascular health to mood regulation. Addressing sleep issues early, whether through airway evaluation or simple lifestyle adjustments, can dramatically improve overall wellness. My favorite way to manage stress and maintain health is by staying active outdoors and prioritizing balance through daily routines. I love hiking with my dog, Rowen, and staying consistent with my evening wind-down routine of working out and using the sauna. I’ve learned that consistency in small, healthy habits matters far more than perfection. Photo credit: Natalie Stephenson

"Research continues to show that no amount of alcohol is truly ‘safe,’ and even a short break from drinking can yield noticeable benefits like improved sleep, better digestion, clearer skin, and more stable energy,” —Amanda Fitt, Clinical Nutritionist and owner of Purely Nourished After months of indulging in rich foods, holiday desserts and festive cocktails, the new year often brings seasonal mood changes, fatigue and unwanted weight gain. For both practical and symbolic reasons, January is the ideal time to hit the restart button and commit to a new year of better mental and physical health. “The best way to reset after the holidays isn’t through extremes, it’s through consistency! Rather than jumping into a restrictive cleanse or intense diet, focus on creating 2–3 realistic, actionable habits that you can sustain long term,” suggests Amanda Fitt, Clinical Nutritionist trained in functional medicine and owner of Purely Nourished in Bend. Some universally beneficial goals Fitt suggests: • Include a high-quality protein source at every meal and snack • Eat at least three different plant foods with each meal (veggies, fruits, grains, nuts/ seeds) • Drink 60-80 ounces of water per day “Rather than a quick fix, think of detoxing as a daily practice supported by consistent, balanced nutrition and good hydration,” Fitt adds. Along with that plan, many Americans take part in a movement called, ‘Sober January’ – a month-long break from alcohol with ‘mocktails,’ beverages that let us enjoy the social side of drinking without the alcohol or calories. Mocktails are not only

delicious, but they also contribute to overall health by providing antioxidants, hydration and functional ingredients. When setting up a plan for the rest of the year that includes healthy eating and drinking, mocktails focus on taste and experience, rather than alcohol content. Ingredients for mocktails can be seasonal and can include fresh or frozen vegetables, fruit juices, kombuchas, teas, coffee and flavored seltzer drinks. “Sober January can be incredibly effective, not just for your physical health, but also for building awareness around our habits. Research continues to show that no amount of alcohol is truly ‘safe,’ and even a short break from drinking can yield noticeable benefits like improved sleep, better digestion, clearer skin, and more stable energy,” explains Fitt. “Even if you reintroduce alcohol in moderation afterward, that one-month pause often helps people reset their relationship with drinking, become more intentional about when and why they drink, and realize how much better they feel without it.” Winter in Central Oregon can feel a bit dreary and mocktails can offer a bright and healthy lift year-round. They’re not only a great way to boost energy and wellness, they are also a great way to get creative with fresh ingredients, juices and vibrant flavor blends. Plus, hosting a mocktail gathering keeps the social spirit alive during those gray winter skies. CONTINUED >

“The truth is, your body already has a sophisticated detoxification system – your liver, kidneys, lungs and guts work around the clock to remove waste and toxins. The goal is to support these systems daily, not flush them entirely,” states Fitt. To do this, focus on nutrient-dense foods that fuel your natural detoxification processes: • Cruciferous vegetables (like cauliflower, cabbage, and broccoli sprouts) help the liver process and eliminate toxins. • High-fiber foods (such as beans, chia, flaxseed, and whole grains) keep digestive regular and support the gut’s role in detoxification. • Hydration is key! Water, herbal teas, and mineral-rich broths are all fantastic options. • Antioxidant-rich foods (berries, herbs, spices, and colorful vegetables) help neutralize free radicals and reduce inflammation.

DON’ T MI S S A S OUND! NEW HEARING AID TECHNOLOGIES LEAD THE WAY TO BETTER OVERALL HEALTH

While most people go to the doctor every year for their annual physicals, and have their eyes and teeth checked regularly, many others overlook a critical step in their healthcare routines — hearing tests. Because hearing loss is usually a gradual process, it is often something people don’t notice for a while. Some issues may stem from years of working in a noisy profession or from attending concerts and other loud events. For some, hearing loss may be due to hereditary factors.

Of course, any sudden hearing loss can be due to a more serious issue, and after a hearing test and a check for wax buildup, patients are often referred to an ENT doctor for further testing. That’s why it’s essential to consult a hearing professional. “Research shows that the average person waits seven years before seeking help with their hearing,” says Tricia Leagjeld, HIS (Hearing Instrument Specialist) and owner and founder of Hearing Aids by Tricia Leagjeld. “They learn to get by for a while, and it’s usually family or friends that recognize they’re not doing well.” Leagjeld wants to change this, and it’s one of the reasons she decided to follow in her family’s footsteps. Her grandfather, Glen Leagjeld, was profoundly deaf, and after being fitted with hearing aids in the early ‘50s, he went on to become licensed as a hearing specialist. In 1955, he opened his own business, Leagjeld Hearing Aid Center in Bend. His son, and Tricia’s father, Jim Leagjeld, started working with him in 1968 and eventually took over the business in 1974. “My father did this for 50 years, so he’s well known in the hearing community,” reflects Leagjeld. “He really learned a lot from my grandfather, and I learned a lot from my dad.” Leagjeld also spent some time in corporate America as a regional director, managing 30 doctors of audiology and their offices, but later decided to return to her family’s roots. Hearing Aids by Tricia Leagjeld, which opened in 2014, now has two offices—one in Northwest Crossing in Bend and one in Redmond. “My talent is fitting hearing aids and running a business,” she states. “We follow best practices, making sure that patients understand every aspect of their hearing aid fitting. Along with hearing testing, evaluation, and counseling, we do real ear measurement, or verification, as it’s called.” Follow-up care includes annual hearing tests and reprogramming, if necessary. The goal, explains Leagjeld, is not just to fit hearing aids and have people go on their way, but to understand the whole process.

“We educate them on how to clean their hearing aids, or we can do it for them. Customer service is really important to us and always has been. It’s part of my family tradition.” Unfortunately, many people still feel there’s a stigma when it comes to hearing aids. “They think well, if I wear hearing aids, I’m old,” Leagjeld says. “But I believe that’s changing now since people are more aware of the research being done about the relationship between hearing and cognitive function. A lot of our technology today is the result of that research, and development is being targeted around deep neural networks, or DNNs, which are advanced AI that work to make speech clearer and listening less tiring, which supports cognitive health by making conversation easier in any environment.” Others, after trying the one-size-fits-all, over-the-counter hearing aids, have had bad experiences. “When people come in for a prescriptive hearing aid fitting, they’re amazed at the difference,” notes Leagjeld. “Our hearing aids are quiet. Patients are not bombarded by background noises and other sounds that can be pretty sharp.” The technology has definitely come a long way. “Hearing aids communicate with each other, and they can determine soft speech versus noise or wind. The technology is a lot more AI now.” Most are small and hardly

noticeable, and many have Bluetooth and apps, so adjustments can be made right on a cell phone. While hearing aid fittings and programming are the practice’s primary functions, other services include hearing protection, such as earplugs for musicians and others who work in noisy environments, and treatment for tinnitus. Leagjeld and her team embrace the family business dynamic among themselves and with patients. “My team understands how I run the business, and everyone in the office is proficient at being super accommodating, friendly, and understanding of everyone’s needs,” she emphasizes. One of her team members is Shayne Blanton, HIS, whom she trained to assist her with patients. “He’s amazing,” says Leagjeld. “Shayne is really good with people and understands my whole process. He really abides by the whole family tradition as well.”

Both offices are fully staffed five days a week. “Shayne and I take turns going back and forth between the offices, so there’s always a provider and a front staff person.” After being in the hearing business for 32 years, Leagjeld still finds it immensely rewarding to educate people, help them hear better, and improve the overall quality of their lives. “They’ll often say, ‘Wow, I’m hearing things I’ve never heard before.’ That’s the reward right there.” Hearing Aids by Tricia Leagjeld offers complete support for your hearing health, including the following services: hearing tests, hearing aids, tinnitus management and ear cleaning. To ensure you don’t miss a sound and to stay on top of your hearing health, schedule an appointment soon. Offering two full-service locations: • Bend – 695 NW York Dr., Ste. 110; 458.202.4947 • Redmond – 708 SW 11th St.; 541.316.5064 HearingAidsbyTriciaLeagjeld.com

SIGNS OF HEARING LOSS

Hearing loss is often gradual and, therefore, its effects are not immediately obvious. It is not easy to recognize change in one’s own hearing. Most often, it will be a friend, family member or loved one who will notice subtle changes in your behavior, such as: • Missing parts of conversations • Difficulty hearing in noisy environments • Complaining of muffled speech • Straining or difficulty understanding words • Asking to turn up the volume on the TV or radio

BENEFITS OF TREATING HEARING LOSS

• Relationships – Relationships rely on good communication. Hearing loss can hinder the potential for responsiveness, but using hearing aids is the start to repairing communication. • Cognitive Skills – Studies show that seniors with hearing loss are more prone to dementia, but by using hearing aids, they likely can improve their cognitive skills • Earnings – Hearing is critical to meeting one’s full potential at work. Studies show that risk of income loss can be reduced by hearing aids.

• Happiness – Hearing loss can make people feel frustrated and alone. Restoring the ability to engage socially and live confidently boosts quality of life. • Self-Confidence – Using hearing aids to bring back the gift of sound can improve one’s sense of control and self-confidence.

YOUR EARS. YOUR BRAIN. YOUR HEARING.

A Johns Hopkins University study indicates untreated hearing loss affects brain structure and function. You hear with your brain, not your ears. This direct relationship between your hearing and brain function is disrupted when you suffer from hearing loss. Studies show that individuals with hearing loss can experience 30% - 40% accelerated rate of cognitive decline. This decrease in brain stimulation may contribute to brain atrophy. The greater the rate of hearing loss the faster the decline of memory and thinking. Exciting new hearing aid technology works to augment these natural processes for clearer, better hearing, just like the brain intended.

Values

Health

Is the most important key to living a full and healthy life hiding from you? There are many factors to consider when thinking about what constitutes health. The food we eat, exercise, environmental influences, our emotions, and our spiritual awareness are all pillars of health. However, there is one factor that tops the list which often goes unspoken; living in alignment with your value system. Defining values helps a person to structure their life based on personal belief systems by determining what is most meaningful and important to them. From there, a sense of purpose is derived and defined values become tenets from which to live. There are plentiful examples of values, and they vary from person to person. Some examples of values include family, humility, benevolence, leadership, kindness, independence, creativity, and adventure. Our emotions serve to guide us to understanding whether our actions are in alignment with our values. When we live incongruently with our value system, we are betraying ourselves and delivering a subconscious message that we do not matter. Emotions that can come from not living in accordance with our values are based in fear and include anxiety, depression, anger, resentment, and jealousy. Living from a place of fear tends

to foster bad habits such as addictive behavior, poor dietary choices, negative sleep habits, and unhealthy relationships. Physiologically, the natural flow of energy in the body becomes stuck, wreaking havoc in the body physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. From there, symptoms and illness ensue. However, when we love and respect ourselves enough, we will spend our time and energy according to our values and emotions where love becomes more prevalent. Those emotions include gratitude, joy, peace, comfort, connection, trust, and happiness. Living from love leads to a desire, willingness and commitment to engage in activities that fulfill our sense of purpose. By doing so, our body’s energy moves with ease. When our energy flows freely, we feel vital, healthy, purposeful, and joyful. Identifying our values becomes easier when we create space in our lives to understand what brings us meaning in life. Here are five steps to create space to aid in identifying your values:

5. Speak your values out loud

1. Grounding/Earthing I have experienced it myself and I hear so many others share a similar experience, that being in nature is healing. Getting our hands into the earth with gardening, walking along the beach, taking a hike, or even lying in the grass brings an almost indescribable sense of well-being. Connecting with the earth’s electrical charge is thought to aid in pain reduction, modulate the immune system, and reduce inflammation. It also can lead to feeling more centered, allowing us to focus on what is most important to us.

2. Meditation/prayer Setting your intentions in quiet solitude using meditation or prayer provides clarity. Meditation may seem overwhelming, but you can make it simple by not expecting perfection in the process. I suggest finding guided meditations online that grab your attention. Try various guided meditations until you find one that feels right.

3. Exercise In addition to the more obvious benefits of exercise, it temporarily unblocks stagnation thereby creating space for objectivity.

4. Journaling Getting thoughts on paper helps clarify intentions.

There are many benefits to literally speaking our truths and discussing our values out loud with a trusted confidant. Bouncing ideas and having meaningful discussions can help us determine our framework and organize our thinking. Sometimes friends and family may not provide the most objective perspectives and professional counseling or life coaching may be more appropriate, while at other times a friend or family member is the most perfect fit! When we live in alignment with our values, we are honoring ourselves in the most self-loving way. From there, our vibrancy shines to our loved ones, our neighbors and even strangers we see out and about. It becomes not only the best gift you can give yourself, but that of our community. So cheers to 2026, let’s make this the best year yet!
