This month Bend Lifestyle went in search of local artists and signs of local love. We didn’t have to look far—Bend is overflowing with talented, giving souls who are sharing their gifts to make our community a more loving, better place. On the following pages we introduce you to a few of these generous individuals. Meet artist Mark Jamnik, who shares his subliminal story art through live community events, classes, and video. Bend Lifestyle editor, Lynette Confer and I had the pleasure of participating in one of Mark’s “Paint with the Artist” classes recently and it was a fun and meaningful experience that I highly recommend to bring out your inner artist. This issue also showcases the story and work of Miguel Edwards (on the cover), a photographer, sculptor, artist and advocate who has an innate ability to connect people and build relationships for the greater good of our community. We are proud to work with Miguel as a contributing photographer to Bend Lifestyle. We also introduce you to the mother-daughter team, Rachael and Amanda O’Haver, who recently founded StarCycle in NWX. Their dream to start a business together resulted in Starcycle’s upbeat cardiovascular cycling workouts all in a candlelit room, set to music. The community has embraced this and has cultivated groups of people meeting there and forming new friendships while getting fit. Lastly, we share the story of entrepreneur Courtney Van Fossan, whose passion for cycling and spreading love led to the creation of Love Bike in Bend. With the goal to “spread love in the streets,” she provides bike rides year-round for everyone regardless of mobility by giving rides on her unique cargo bike by Triobike. We hope the stories in this issue cause you to appreciate the talent that surrounds us and to find your own way to connect in our community. It can be difficult to pin one title on any person. For some, their work defines them, or maybe their relationships. To meet Miguel Edwards is to meet a man of many hats and many talents. Photographer, sculptor, artist, husband, mentor, advocate, entrepreneur, activist, and friend to many. “I’m a five hats at a time kind of guy,” says Edwards, a frequent contributing photographer to Bend Lifestyle magazine. To be certain, his photography has taken him far. But, his talents as a sculptor have been gaining attention for years. In fact, this past June, Edwards and his wife traveled to Greece where he participated in a three-week sculpture residency. Before the trip to Greece, Edwards admits to feeling a bit burned out with his photography business. “I just kind of fell

out of love with the business,” he admits. “In Greece I took at least 10,000 photos for me, for my wife. I just found my passion for the art again.” A shift in perspective is something Edwards says is powerful for an artist, and something he experienced on this trip. “A good photographer doesn’t just go and take a photo, but they build and create with light,” Edwards explains. Manipulating light is sort of a constant concept in Edward’s art, whether in photography or sculpture. “Epic lighting can change a room, an event, a sunset. Most people don’t think about lighting much, but if lighting is well-crafted, it’s an intrinsic part of many good experiences, in art and in life.” A self-described “maker” his entire life, Edwards was born in Idaho, but grew CONTINUED >

up in New Mexico, living a childhood he recognizes as idyllic in many ways, and not something every child experiences. “I just didn’t hear that I ‘couldn’t’ or ‘shouldn’t’ do things,” Edwards says. “My dad was a nuclear and mechanical engineer, but also an inventor and loom builder and my mom was a weaver. I grew up with the run of acreage, a workshop, a dog, adults who cared and the freedom to create. I gained the confidence to grow into who I was meant to be, and I know that was a gift.” After high school Edwards attended two years at the University of New Mexico. After winning a student exchange to Southern Oregon University, he moved to Ashland, but soon found himself living in Seattle where he planned to finish his degree in film at Evergreen State College. “It was around that time that some of my photography was published in Billboard Magazine and the Seattle Times. At that point, I just didn’t see a need to finish my degree, as I was making a living with what I would have studied,” he reflects. “I got to Seattle in 1992 and really fell into the Seattle life,” Edwards says. “I was taking photos of bands, worked on films, owned a commercial photography studio, was a bartender, cook, stage manager, tech support for a jewelry store and even taught photography at Bellevue Community College. I was also a founding employee of Elysian Brewing Company and owned Capitol

Hill Camping and Surplus for a while.” While in Seattle, Edwards built a photography career that gained him recognition. In 2009, while serving on the board for the Center On Contemporary Art (COCA), Edwards created a sculpture for the first COCA Heaven and Earth art show. “I built my sculpture career out of that show,” Edwards states. “I was always interested in sculpting, but it took a while to find my voice.” He describes the 2009 sculpture for the COCA Heaven and Earth show as a “polarity shift,” and a moment where he knew he was a sculptor. Within five months Edwards had major gallery representation in Santa Fe and has shown in galleries ever since. Anyone who meets Edwards will find he has an innate ability to connect people to resources and build relationships and community. He admits that he feels like he has a good understanding of people and personalities. “My brain just tracks people and their strengths,” Edwards says. 'Bringing people together and encouraging them to embrace their special gifts for the community and greater good is something I can’t not do. It’s like I see a matrix of what everyone needs, what they are good at… it just makes sense.” “We can inspire each other and support one another,” Edwards says. “I feel that creativity and inspiration are really the antidote to what the human condition has become.”

Miguel Edwards’ Art: SCULPTURES:

Sculptures by Miguel Edwards can be found in galleries around the country, including California and New Mexico. He also has several public art contracts in Seattle, along with two large projects in downtown Bellevue, Washington. In 2018 he was commissioned to build the ceremonial cauldron, entitled “Hope Rising,’’ for the 50th Special Olympics in 2018. In January 2018, Edwards and his wife relocated to Bend. They both enjoy the great outdoor opportunities here. And, Edwards jumped right into the community, investing in many ways. He currently serves as a commissioner for the Bend Cultural Tourism Board, is a member of Central Oregon Metal Arts Guild, takes photos for downtown Bend businesses and magazines and is a founding member of the Deschutes River Woods volunteer fire squad with his good friend and glass artist, Jeff Thompson. Edwards and Thompson have some new artistic collaborations in the works. “I’ve been fortunate working with a lot of wonderful galleries, and I do love to travel. But what is important to me now is being home. I love the community we are building here. I am truly collaborative by nature, I love people, I love to create, and I want to make more pieces for my neighbors,” Edwards states. “Come to my shop, have a beer, let’s go to your house, let’s make the beautiful piece for you and your family that you will love to look at every day, that is ancestral grade and will outlive us. It really is a gift to be able to create for people something that inspires them and adds beauty and meaning to their spaces.”

When Amanda O’Haver and her mom Rachael O’Haver opened the doors to StarCycle in September of 2023, it was a dream come true. “We’ve always wanted to open a business together, and after I started riding at StarCycle in Portland, my mom started coming with me.” They loved the classes and decided to buy into the franchise. “Every StarCycle is owned by a woman, and I believe there are 14 studios now, but we are the only mother-daughter team,” says Amanda. Participants cycle in a candlelit room to upbeat and energizing music, and classes are structured for every fitness level. “You don't have to stand up in the saddle or ride as fast as others — we are for everybody and every body,” she emphasizes. “You can make it as challenging as you want it to be.” Right now, they have a member who is 13 and another who is in her 70s. Each class is 45 minutes long, and in addition to providing a great cardiovascular workout, instructors also incorporate weights and different movements on the bikes for a whole-body workout. “It’s also a really good low-impact, high-intensity workout,” states Amanda. Different memberships and packages are available, so clients can sign up for what works best for them. “We have an unlimited membership where you can come

in as many times as you like or even take two classes back-to-back,” says Rachael. “We also have class packages if you don't think you can come in multiple times a week. Or, you can buy a 10 pack of classes and use those within an allotted amount of time.” It is also possible to try out a class for free. Classes are held early mornings, during the day, many evenings, and on weekends, to make it convenient for everyone. Childcare is also provided on site for children from 6 weeks to 10 years old. “That’s a huge game changer,” Amanda notes. “It's great for the mom or dad who wants to come in and take 45 minutes for themselves and know the kiddos are well taken care of.” She knows personally how important this is — she has a 14-month-old daughter, Laine. “I can still teach classes and I don't have to find childcare somewhere else. She loves being here.” Many of the instructors have been with StarCycle for years and have a lot of experience. “We also have new instructors who bring a really fun energy and excitement for the brand,” says Rachael. “When hiring, we tried to find women from all different walks of life, with various body types and of different ages. They love helping support and encourage women.” Although StarCycle is geared more towards women, they are open to adding male instructors to their team, as well as having male clients come in and be part of their community. “We want to have a very positive community, and we love the fact that now we have groups of people who are meeting here, becoming friends and hanging out afterwards,” remarks Amanda. With an incredible view of the Cascade Mountain range to the west and a vast high desert blanketed by a sky full of stars to the east, it’s easy to imagine where local artists, craftsmen and writers draw their inspiration here in Central Oregon. Mark Jamnik, a local Subliminal Story Artist, blends words and colors in an abstract technique that displays an underlying meaning below the beautiful Bend landscape, the artist’s world travels and love of nature. “I love going out mountain biking during the summer to get my nature time and in the winter, being with the trees on skis at Mt. Bachelor,” says Jamnik.

Jamnik was born and raised outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He lived there until after college, then moved to sunny Arizona. In 2020, a peaceful voice told Jamnik to trust his instincts and go. He listened and began traveling the country, with a stop in Bend to visit a friend. Jamnik instantly fell in love with the community, and the unique landscape. Because he had already been doing art for several years, it was a smooth transition when he made his official move to Bend in 2022. Jamnik’s unique artistic style is not only multi-layered in color and shapes, it has a community-based approach. “Before I ever

touch the canvas, I invite the community to contribute their inspiration based on a prompt ‘word or phrase,’" explains Jamnik. While attending multiple events around Bend, Jamnik offers a Collective Experience in which he asks the spectators what Bend means to them and requests that they write it down in an open space where they can express their feelings through words and phrases and share the experience with others in real time. The process is designed to further connect the community through stories and reflections and directly inspires what goes onto Jamnik’s canvases. Because this process is different CONTINUED >

the piece and allows the reader to take away their own meaning. Through the intertwining colors and abstract shapes, it’s as if we are searching through the depths of the canvas to find the message beneath. Messages of hope, belonging, love, and nature. One of Jamnik’s pieces, ‘A Place Called Home’ was inspired by “The wonderful people of Bend and encapsulates the many steps that brought me here,” Jamnik reflects. It’s beautiful rainbow of colors layers itself over words brought to us by our close-knit community and all the outdoor activities we enjoy. It brings all the elements together that show Bend’s spirit and wanderlust.

every time, Jamnik is unaware of what the outcome of the piece will look like until it’s complete. “I love that when people are given the prompt... you'll often see them pause and really think. It's about letting go of all the other things that are happening to become present to the moment to really think...what does that ‘prompt word’ mean for me?” Jamnik adds.

KEEPING IT LOCAL

While traveling is still a passion, Jamnik prefers to spend most of his time in Bend creating new, one of kind pieces, doing community events like First Friday and sharing his technique with budding artists. Jamnik’s website ebbs and flows like his art and takes the reader through his stories, his processes and his philosophies on creativity. In the coming year, Jamnik will continue to create new pieces, share his talents on video and participate in several live community events. One event in the works is a series of illuminated story art, where the paintings are lit from behind so observers can view the story embedded within each painting and experience a unique perspective from day to night. Another event called Rolling out Paint takes the community inspired version of Paint with the Artist (PWA) to various companies, nonprofits and social groups looking for new ways to create, connect and make art. At a PWA class, Jamnik “invites your inner artist to pick up a paintbrush and reconnect to the creativity you had as a child.” With classes taking place at 6 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month at Thump Coffee at The Grove in NW Crossing, there are ample opportunities to learn more and participate in this interactive art experience. Love Bike Bend A LITTLE LOVE GOES A LONG WAY

For the month of February, Bend Lifestyle celebrates “Love Local.” A small, local woman-owned business, Love Bike of Bend, embodies this theme with a mission of “spreading love in the streets.” With a goal to provide bike rides to everyone, regardless of age or mobility, owner Courtney Van Fossan founded Love Bike in 2018 with the purchase of a unique cargo bike made by Triobike in Denmark. Although many people might consider biking through the streets of Bend to be a summer or warm weather activity, Van Fossan wants to normalize off season rides. “I love fall and winter, it’s beautiful, quieter in town. The summer can be hot, so cooler weather can be ideal.” As a tricycle style bike, the Love Bike is super stable and handles well in winter riding conditions and comes complete with a cozy, custom-fitting lap blanket. “People are doing this in different ways, mostly outside this country, mostly in Europe. There’s this global group called “Cycling without Age” that uses bikes specifically for older people, to get them outside and cycling,” Van Fossan explains. “So, I actually started out thinking of forming a prospective local chapter of this group.” Ultimately Van Fossan decided that she wanted all the funds to be used locally.

With an almost lifelong passion for cycling, Van Fossan is a self-proclaimed transportation geek with an undergraduate degree in social work. She is also an artist and musician. Her love of community, compassion for people and passion for cycling, along with her work experience, skills and gifts, makes the vision and mission of Love Bike come to life. Van Fossan worked previously as a sales manager for Bend Electric Bikes. She also worked as a bike tour guide. From the L.A. area, Van Fossan moved to Bend over 10 years ago to find a better place to bike and a place where her kids could spend more time outdoors. “Before I had kids, I started biking around as an alternative to driving. When I had kids, I didn’t want them to grow up in cars, so they grew up on bikes,” Van Fossan reflects. “Love Bike just feels like a bit of an evolution of that.” Love Bike is built to hold three adults. “This is a high end European-made bike that is purpose built,” explains Van Fossan. Passengers ride up front in the cargo area and the bike itself has a little electric assist to compensate for the weight being carried, ensuring Van Fossan does not overexert herself as she takes people on adventures. When it comes to providing a Love Bike experience, Van Fossan notes, “The caretaker part of me is really good at hosting someone on this bike, making them feel comfortable and at ease. It brings me joy, to give people a really enjoyable experience they don’t have every day.” An area of passion and interest for Van Fossan is working with hospice to provide rides for those near end of life. She also enjoys working with older folks and, a few years ago, she invited residents from Mt. Bachelor Memory Care in Bend to a winter festival at the Inn of the Seventh Mountain. “I took the Love Bike out on the ice and gave rides to people who otherwise would not be able to participate, creating this immersive event for them.” And, although Love Bike is very easy for most people to get into, Van Fossan hopes to add a wheelchair bike to her fleet soon.
