July is here and I have to admit, over the past few months, I thought it would never come. Let’s make the most of our gorgeous summer here in our High Desert, beat the heat and play on the water!
I grew up in Michigan where some of my fondest memories are the summers I spent enjoying the lake life—either on a boat or in the water with family and friends. Living here in the High Desert I’m grateful we have the mountain lakes, rivers and reservoirs that offer water recreation.
To kick off our Summer Fun issue, the following pages bring you a boating story about Active Water Sports (AWS), who we welcome to Central Oregon with their new showroom in Redmond. Whether you enjoy wakeboarding, waterskiing, tubing, wake surfing or just the wind in your hair while you lounge on a boat, getting out on the water creates lasting family memories and a perfect way to spend the summer.
After playing hard in the summer heat, relax in the cool evenings with an outdoor movie and backyard dinner. Learn how to set up the perfect experience in this issue.
With so little time and so much to do this season, we’ve created a summer bucket list to help you pack it all in. Use this for starters and be inspired
Here’s to an adventurous, healthy and fun summer!

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee that doesn’t respond to medications and injections often results in knee replacement surgery. But a new, minimally invasive procedure called GAE can help improve knee pain without joint replacement surgery.
The board-certified interventional radiologists at CORA are skilled and trained in this revolutionary treatment for patients who can’t have or don’t want knee replacement surgery. During GAE, an interventional radiologist uses X-ray guidance and an embolizing agent to reduce blood flow to the area of the knee causing pain. This breaks the inflammatory cycle, relieving pain and protecting the joint.
Studies on GAE have shown marked decreases in mild-to-moderate as well as severe knee pain due to osteoarthritis for years following treatment. GAE is truly changing lives, freeing patients from a reliance on pain medication and helping them maintain more active, healthier lifestyles.
Please call our team of IR Coordinators at (541) 312-5522 to schedule a consultation with one of our providers. Patients may also schedule their own initial consultations to assist facilitation within their health care team.
• Minimally invasive and long-lasting
• Reduces or eliminates the need for pain medications and/or anti-inflammatory injections
• Helps protect the joint from further damage
• An option for people who cannot receive general anesthesia
GAE is a relatively new innovative procedure using established techniques performed for other image guided interventional radiology procedures.

When Warren Freece, a competitive water skier, opened Active Water Sports (AWS) out of a gas shack in 1982, he didn’t know that his hobby and love of water sports would lead to a life-long career. Thanks to him, thousands of people in the Pacific Northwest have enjoyed years of fun on the water.
Dan Lay, who grew up enjoying water sports, walked into AWS in 2007 at the age of 19 looking for a temporary job, and he too never realized he’d found a career. Today, he is the general manager. “It’s a fun place to work, and I’m a lifer,” he says.
With locations in Canby, Portland and Oregon City, AWS is now expanding into Redmond to be closer to many of its clients, and to attract new ones. People in the Bend area will have easier access to boating and all that goes along with it.
“Many dealers can sell you a boat, but when it comes to needing it serviced or stored, or buying toys like wakeboards and water skis, that’s where AWS stands out,” Lay states.
Along with the multiple locations, there’s an online catalog for merchandise as well. AWS also offers an outstanding concierge service. “We’ll actually pick up your boat from you at the end of the season and take it to one of our facilities, have all the routine maintenance done and then tuck it away into storage,” explains Lay. “When you’re ready to have your boat back, we schedule a time and bring it to you. We call it a ‘hassle free boating experience.’ Warren has worked very hard over the last 40 years to make the boating experience very easy for our customers.”
Like Freece and Lay, everyone on staff is knowledgeable and can guide people to the right boat for their needs.

AWS put a 2023 Malibu 23 LSV in the water at Lake Billy Chinook to kick off summer.
“Some of the questions we ask are: ‘Where are you going to be using the boat? How many people are in your party? What activities do you want to do behind the boat – water skiing, wakeboarding, or something else?’” Lay says.
Years ago, water skiing was the main water sport, but times have changed. “That was the only thing available back in the 80s, but then wakeboarding became popular in the mid-90s and took over for a couple of decades,” notes Lay. “Now, we’re seeing a huge spike in interest in wakesurfing. The boats for this sport are higher-end and are designed to basically create a wave big enough that you don’t have to hold onto a rope to surf as if you would in the ocean. Instead, it creates an endless wave that never breaks. It’s low impact and easy to learn. You can have little to no board sport abilities and you could be wakesurfing within the first few tries.”
Tubing, of course, is still popular, as it’s also easy and so much fun. “Every boat we sell typically has at least one or two tubes on it.”
They also encourage people to go out on the boats they’re interested in purchasing. “This is important whether it’s your first boat or if you’ve been on a hundred boats,” Lay says. “We want
Before setting out:
you to see firsthand what the boat experience is like on our boats so you can make the best decision for how you want to invest your money. We’re not going to sell you something that isn’t going to make you a lifelong boater.”
Boating, Lay believes, is a great family activity. “Whether it’s that houseboat trip on Lake Shasta that brings the family home for the summer, or just going out after work. Instead of kids going over to their friend’s houses, the friends are coming over to their houses to go boating.”
“I’m a prime example. I’ve got two daughters, ages 11 and 9. I spent all summer teaching their friends how to get up on a wakeboard or wakesurf. And it’s nice. Instead of them wanting to go to their friend’s house, they’re all coming to my boat.”
In addition to the sports and the fun of boating, being on the water is just a calming experience where you can get away from it all. “I truly believe that there’s something special about the water that just provides a good, therapeutic, relaxing vibe for people,” Lay remarks. “Once I drop my boat in the water and we’re off, all of those things that were stressing me out just don’t seem to matter whatsoever anymore.”

• Check the weather forecast. Dress accordingly. Apply sunscreen.
• Make sure your equipment is in proper working order. Get a free vessel safety checklist from your local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
• Use a pre-departure checklist. Don't forget a first-aid kit and tool kit.
• Always file a float plan with someone you trust.
• Have a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket for every person on the boat.
• Operating the boat:
• Avoid alcohol while driving the boat. Alcohol affects balance, coordination, judgment and vision.
• Once on the water, use common sense and stay focused.
Tips for water skiers, tubers, wakeboarders and others:
• Always have a spotter in the boat.
• Check the towline prior to entering the water.
• Before getting back on the boat, wait for the propeller to stop.

Warm days and cool nights have finally arrived in Central Oregon and it’s time to make that summer bucket list. One “must do” to add to your list that combines food, entertainment and gathering with friends and family is a backyard dinner and movie under the stars! Creating a unique cinema experience for all ages in the comfort of your own home is not a one-time event. Once you have the right equipment and a plan, this is an enjoyable experience that can be repeated, with a different movie and menu each time.
Selecting the best technology for your budget and outdoor environment takes time, research and reading a lot of reviews. When starting the process of setting up your outdoor theater, make sure the screen and projector can be at least ten feet away from each other. Outdoor movie screens come in several different sizes and materials. The blowup versions that require an air pump can be pricier; however, they’ll last the longest. There are smaller versions that sit on stands and usually roll up nicely for easy storage. If DIY is on the brain, a clean, pressed, white sheet affixed to the house or PVC pipe will do, if it can withstand a little Central Oregon breeze.
Once you have a screen, it’s time to secure a projector for the desired experience. Modern home theater projectors offer brilliant picture quality,
great sound and bright images that are perfect for a movie when it gets dark. Look for a projector that has at least 1080p (pixels) and can handle projecting on a screen size up to 250 inches.
Sound and media playing capabilities are very important to your outdoor movie night. Most projectors have built-in speakers. However, having an extra set to enhance the surround sound will make the experience that much better. Projectors that take Blu-ray or HDMI media will take an extra step to set up. New model projectors have streaming stick capabilities and are the easiest to use with external sound equipment.
For seating, set up plenty of comfy blankets and pillows on either the grass or deck, and perhaps near an outdoor fire pit.
Once the technology is set up and ready to go, it’s time to pick the movie and the menu! There are tons of classics and newer summer movies for every age group. If it’s a young kid’s night, consider an animated film like Finding Nemo, Moana , Rango or The Secret Life of Pets. If it’s a young adult night, films like The Goonies, The Never-Ending Story or E.T. are perfect choices. Adult night? Throw on Dirty Dancing, National Lampoon’s Vacation or Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Streaming services have plenty of options for classic or new release summer films in every genre.
When the night starts to cool and the movie is getting to the good part, get everyone cozied up in a blanket with a cup of hot chocolate and s’mores. Enjoy! And, see you at the (backyard) movies!
BEVERAGES: Watermelon Margaritas, iced tea with fresh mint or fresh lemonade
APPETIZERS: veggies, dips, fruit or charcuterie boards

No outdoor movie night is complete without unlimited popcorn and treats!
Experience a
Pain-Free,
If you have ever found yourself avoiding the dental chair because you have a fear of needles, hate the numbing process or have had a negative experience in the past, one dental office in Redmond offers an option that might change all that. With new laser technology, Central Oregon Dental Esthetics offers a virtually pain-free dental experience, relieving stress and anxiety.
In January of 2020, Dr. Denise Hicks, DDS, was excited to embark on a new journey with her own dental clinic. Three months later, Central Oregon Dental Esthetics experienced an unplanned shutdown due to the pandemic. During this time, Hicks began researching laser technology.
“I had actually started researching a much smaller soft tissue laser before COVID-19,” states Hicks. “But, then I kind of went down a rabbit hole, researching more and more. What I learned was very exciting in the world of dentistry.”
Hicks explains that, like in all healthcare settings, the dental profession was concerned about aerosols and how COVID-19 was spread. “With the laser, there is less aerosol production,” Hicks explains. “And, what is produced by the laser, according to a lot of studies, is more sterile.” Thus, there was less chance of something becoming airborne and spreading the virus.
After extensive research, Hicks found she could not ignore the benefits of the Solea Laser technology. “It was a big investment, but one I felt was important to offer my patients the best care that I can,” remarks Hicks. “Once I found out about it, I couldn’t ‘not’ do this, knowing there was a better option out there.”
When Central Oregon Dental Esthetics reopened their doors later in 2020, they were the first dental clinic in Central Oregon to offer Solea Laser Dentistry. Although this laser technology is becoming more and more prevalent in larger cities, Hicks is still the only dental office in Central Oregon using the Solea Laser technology.
The Solea Laser is a CO2 all-tissue laser that allows Hicks to do the majority of fillings without having to use any sort of anesthetic. “The laser numbs the tooth as it works,” says Hicks. “This is a huge game changer for people who are needle phobic, just don’t want to be numb all day or for those people who have a true allergy to anesthetics.”
Most patients find the Solea Laser Dentistry option reduces the anxiety many people associate with dental procedures. “It’s a much more gentle, and basically pain-free way, to do fillings and even crowns,” Hicks states. A dental clinic for all ages, Hicks and her staff offer same day crowns, treatment for TMJ pain, botox to treat myofascial pain, botox and filler for lip enhancement, teeth whitening, clear aligners and laser treatment for snoring, among other services.
“There’s a setting we can use on the laser that treats the soft palate and helps to tighten the collagen located within the palatal tissue, which helps to treat snoring,” notes Hicks. “The laser also helps us be more efficient with certain procedures since we aren’t having to wait for numbing to take effect.”
Central Oregon Dental Esthetics is a small, intimate clinic. “We strive to keep it cozy, relaxed, more of a concierge dental clinic atmosphere where we cater to each patient instead of to numbers and quantity,” Hicks says. “Our goal is to get people in and out as quickly as possible and patient comfort is our top priority.”
“The laser really does open up more options for more people,” states Hicks. The laser treatment for fillings and other routine dental work is generally covered by insurance. Central Oregon Dental Esthetics does offer an in-house membership plan for those without dental insurance or who prefer to have additional coverage.

MATERIALS:
• 10 drops lemon essential oil
• 10 drops lemongrass essential oil
• 4 drops lavender essential oil
• 1.5 ounces distilled water
(minus 1 teaspoon to make room for the essential oils in the bottle)
• .5 ounce 95% proof grain alcohol*
INSTRUCTIONS:
In a 2-ounce spray bottle, add the grain alcohol (or Solubol) and drop in essential oils. Swirl to combine. Place the cap back on the bottle. Allow the oils to disperse in the alcohol for about 1 hour, then add distilled water, swirling again to combine.
*The grain alcohol is used as a preservative as well as a carrier for the oils, but you can also use a product like this instead of grain alcohol at a 1:4 ratio (1 drop essential oil to 4 drops Solubol) if you’d rather and then just fill the rest with water to fill the 2-ounce spray bottle.
While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isn’t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than cold-pressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you don’t have a skin-safe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils).
