Tips for Planning Your Outdoor Living Space

EXTEND YOUR HOME’S LIVING AREA AND CREATE A ROOM OUTSIDE

The return of summer is always a cause for celebration in the High Desert. Families and friends gather to spend more time in outdoor living spaces. Whether enjoying the sunset or engaging in good conversation around a firepit, this extension of your living space can offer a place for dining, cooking, hot tubbing, entertaining or just lounging. To maximize your space, it’s important to plan ahead.

When it comes to planning and shopping for your outdoor living space, visiting a local showroom where you can touch, feel and view furnishings in person allows you an opportunity to make choices based on the comfort, size and color that will suit your living style and decor. Patio World has been serving Central Oregon with quality outdoor furnishings since 1988 and boasts one of the largest showrooms in the state, recently building a new 15,000 sq. ft. showroom on Columbia Street, on the southwest edge of the Old Mill District.

“It’s great to do your preliminary research online, but visiting a showroom allows you to try the seating options and understand the scale and style of what you are shopping for,” states owner and founder of Patio World Scott Holmer. “There are four basic categories of outdoor living spaces: cushioned seating areas around a fire pit, a dining table with chairs, an outdoor kitchen and hot tub. Check out a showroom in each category to help you choose your outdoor furnishings.”

TIPS FOR PLANNING YOUR OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE:

Dining: Plan for at least 4’ on each side to allow room for chairs and walking around. For six or more people, a 42” x 72” table needs an area of about 12’ x 14’ outdoors.

Lounge Furniture Groups: This could consist of two cushioned chairs separated by a side table, all the way up to a sofa or loveseat, swivel

rockers and a fire pit. For space requirements, measure the furnishings and add at least 3’ - 4’ extra on all sides.

Outdoor Cooking: Possibilities include something as small as a free-standing barbeque grill all the way up to a full outdoor kitchen that might include an outdoor oven, refrigerator and sink with countertop.

Hot Tub: Create your own private oasis with a hot tub that can be enjoyed year-round. Common sizes are about 6’ - 7’ square.

Designing a relaxing outdoor living space expands your home design, adds value to your home, and provides a comfortable, enjoyable way to immerse yourself in the natural beauty surrounding your home. If you are looking for a way to extend the living space in your home, look no further than out your back (or front) door!

35 YEARS IN BEND: THE EVOLUTION OF PATIO WORLD: 1976 – Scott Holmer started The Lift Ski Shop in Minnesota.

1984 – He expanded this business to include patio furniture.

1988 – Holmer and his wife moved to Bend and built The Lift (now Pine Mountain Sports) on Century Drive. There, they raised their family of two children in the upstairs apartment.

2002 – As the business grew, Patio World relocated to Reed Market Rd. and was renamed Race Place/Patio World. Race Place has grown to be the largest supplier of Alpine Ski Racing gear in North America and ships gear throughout the continent, as well as being a favorite workshop for discriminating local skiers.

2023 – As the business outgrew the space on Reed Market, Holmer launched the design and construction of a new 15,000 sq. ft. Patio World Showroom that opened this spring. The expansive new showroom is located on Columbia Street on Bend’s westside.

FROM WILDLAND FIREFIGHTER TO SMOKEJUMPER

An Up Close Look at the Life of a Redmond Smokejumper

Since 1964, a local team of elite wildland firefighters has called Redmond home. The Redmond Smokejumpers have a long history of serving our region and our country with their unique skill set, jumping from airplanes to safely and quickly parachute in as close as possible to fires in remote, often rough terrain, with a goal of early containment to these potentially high-risk fires. Located just east of Redmond at the Roberts Field Airport, the Redmond Air Center (RAC) serves as the base for this group of highly skilled wildland firefighters.

The Smokejumper program has been in existence since 1940, when the first jump was made on the Nez Perce National Forest in Idaho. Since that time, this program and the highly trained wildland firefighters typically serve as the initial attack resource for wildfires in remote areas. Although the total number of smokejumpers varies year to year, the Redmond Smokejumper Base is a medium size base with funding for 50 smokejumpers.

Although their base is local, the Redmond Smokejumpers are part of the national program and a shared resource across the nation. They can be called at a moment’s notice to fires in Alaska, California, Nevada and elsewhere across the nation. “Each region has a different fire season, and some, like California, are at risk year round,” explains Redmond Smokejumper Program Manager Josh Cantrell. “Our fire season in Central Oregon is generally June through the end of September.”

In April each year, new recruits are brought on for a six to seven week training program. “The attrition rate with rookie training varies, but averages about 40 percent,” states Cantrell. “If we bring on eight recruits, I hope to have five make it through training.” Requirements for entry into the rookie smokejumper program are physical testing, a medical release and at least 90 days of wildland firefighting experience. “We are purely teaching the rookie how to work as a smokejumper, and that largely is how to jump out of a plane. Training ensures that the individual is proficient under canopy so that they can safely land a jump out of that plane in a remote area and get to the primary job, which is fighting that fire.”

There are smokejumpers who return year after year. The seasoned smokejumpers have to pass physical testing that includes push-ups, sit-ups, and a run in a determined amount of time. “The other essential requirement is body weight,” explains Cantrell. “We jump out of the plane with about 90 pounds of gear.” Body weight requirements are 120 lb. minimum and 210 lb. maximum. The body weight limit is driven largely by the limitations of the equipment.

Once a recruit becomes a rookie smokejumper, their training prepares them for their first fire jump of the year. “That first jump is their first jump in a

non-controlled setting,” states Cantrell. “Something that is unique to a parachutist is that, once you are out of that airplane, you are entirely on your own. That can be in Alaska, on a ridge in Nevada, some remote rocky slope or deep in timber. A smokejumper needs the confidence and skills to get themselves safely to the ground, where they need to be.” The intense training a smokejumper goes through gives them the tools to handle what they will encounter with the completely variable, and mostly unpredictable and unknown nature of their job.

The job of a smokejumper is inherently full of challenges on many levels. “There’s an ongoing battle of quality of life,” notes Cantrell. “During the summertime, we are here, from early morning until after dark. We have to balance family life and work. And, this is an arduous job – physically demanding, long hours, mentally taxing and we work within a huge organization with huge wheels that have to turn to get things done.” But along with the challenges, you can see there is a deep love and gratitude for the job Cantrell is charged with. “I love the adventure and the people I work with. It’s a very rewarding job,” Cantrell says. Throughout his 25 plus year career as a USFS Smokejumper, Cantrell has had the opportunity to travel to 48 states.

“The biggest challenge is absolutely being away from loved ones and the unexpected nature of the job. It’s certainly not lost on us that it’s really hard on our loved ones back at home,” agrees Joe Madden, a Redmond Smokejumper veteran. “You come here in the morning and don’t know where you are going to sleep that night. One of my favorite things in the whole world is to jump on a fire where you fly into the wilderness and it requires team problem solving to identify the jump site. That adventure is the pinnacle of the job for me.”

Smokejumpers serve our country and communities doing a job that few are prepared or qualified to do. “Finding people who want to do this, can do it and want to return is a challenge,” admits Cantrell. “For me this started as a way to pay for school, and yet, here I am. That’s not an uncommon story for those who find something they love to do.”

Smokejumper training ensures that the individual is proficient under canopy so that they can safely land a jump out of that plane in a remote area and get to the primary job, which is to fight that fire.

Smokejumpers custom make much of their gear, like their helmets which are usually downhill ski helmets with a metal grill attached.

As amazing as it seems, all jump gear is manufactured at the RAC; even the jump harnesses are made by hand.

The RAC parachute room has a ceiling high enough to hang parachutes after use to inspect the fabric, lines and cells for needed repairs.

Since 1964 the Redmond Smokejumpers have called Redmond Air Center (RAC) home.

Hockey knee pads are part of Smokejumper Joe Madden's jump gear, all of which is intended to protect him as he jumps into unknown, potentially rugged, terrain.

The jump gear manufactured at the RAC by smokejumpers is cut from kevlar fabric and sewn on machines in the RAC's sewing room. Redmond Smokejumper Program Manager Josh Cantrell explains the purpose of the ready room, cargo room and other spaces within the RAC. Malfunction Training Videos (MTV) simulation apparatus is used for training smokejumpers on the ground before they ever jump out of a plane.
HOMETOWN HERO | LIFE + CULTURE 20
Outside the Redmond Smokejumper Loft at the RAC. The loft houses the ready room, cargo room, sewing room and work out space and more.

A Redmond Smokejumper for the past 10 years, firefighting was always a summer job for Madden until he started smokejumping. “It began to feel more like a career path after that.” Madden has been helping with Smokejumper rookie training for the past few years. “I love building everyone up. We want them to demonstrate proficiency so that at the end of training they can look back and have confidence in themselves and the program, so that no matter where they go, the smokejumper program is functioning at that higher level.”

• Jump Harness

• Parachute Packs (main on back, reserve on front)

• Personal Gear (PG) Bag (holds firefighting gear for ground)

• Pack Out Bag (jump gear is stored in here after arrival at wildfire jump site)

Preparation for fire season happens year-round so that when the first siren sounds, smokejumpers are ready to respond. All jump gear, except for parachutes, is manufactured at the RAC. Along with sewing gear, supply boxes are built, tools are serviced and many other tasks are completed during the off season.

Joe Madden (shown at bottom left) Redmond Smokejumper Training rookie and seasoned smokejumpers begins in the spring, preparing them for jumps out of the plane at 3,000 feet. Communication and Connection

Tips for Men

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE | LIFE + CULTURE
24

The importance of effective communication cannot be overstated. In our fast-paced, always-online world, it’s all too easy to slip into auto-pilot and forget to check in with loved ones or connect with new friends. Generally speaking, men usually go into problem-solving mode when communicating. This can mean that they forget to stop and listen before wanting to offer solutions. By making a conscious effort to practice active listening and empathy, men can deepen their connections to their partners and those around them. With that in mind, here are a few tips for men, but truly applicable to anyone interested in cultivating better communication skills in order to build stronger, more fulfilling relationships.

THE KEYS TO ACTIVE LISTENING

The first step towards effective communication is active listening. This involves giving your full attention to your partner, without interrupting or being distracted. In a conversation there are two parts, the person talking and the person actively listening. As a listener, start by approaching conversations with an open mind and a willingness to learn. This means listening to understand and appreciate the points being made, rather than simply waiting for your turn to speak. When you take the time to truly listen, you demonstrate that you care and value the other person’s perspective, which can create deeper connections and more meaningful conversations.

BECOME A BETTER SPEAKER

When it comes to speaking, first identify your purpose. Think about why you’re speaking and what you want to accomplish. This will help you focus and give you direction, as well as an opportunity to empathize with your partner and consider how your words will affect him or her. Taking the time to slow down and speak deliberately will also enhance your communication and make you

a more compelling speaker. Remember, your partner wants to hear what you have to say! As a man, it is also essential to learn to set healthy boundaries for yourself and to respect the boundaries of others. This provides a healthy framework in which to effectively communicate with your partner.

LEARN TO READ NONVERBAL CUES

One essential part of communication often overlooked is the importance of paying attention to nonverbal cues. As men, it’s important to slow down and really focus on the facial expressions and body language of those around us. These are clues to how our partner or others around us are feeling, even without exchanging words. Tuning in to these subtle clues can give us insight and make verbal communication more effective.

EXPRESS GRATITUDE

This tip may sound simple, but expressing gratitude and appreciation to your partner can make a profound impact. Recognizing and acknowledging their efforts lets them know that their hard work is valued and cherished. Even seemingly mundane tasks like doing the dishes or cooking a meal can take on a deeper significance when they are acknowledged and appreciated by your partner. It’s a simple yet powerful way to strengthen your bond and show your partner how much you value their contributions.

Enhancing communication skills is a universal opportunity for growth, regardless of our individual backgrounds. When we improve our ability to communicate effectively, we not only benefit ourselves but also have the potential to inspire and teach others through our example. When we work to improve our own communication, we can collectively contribute to creating a more harmonious and joyful environment for those around us.

Change starts with you.

Homemade Dry Rub Seasonings

ADD SPICE TO SUMMER BARBEQUES

When I was first introduced to meat rubs years ago, it was because I was searching for a way to season and spice up meat for the smoker after I forgot to marinate it overnight. With a bit of research online, I stumbled upon a recipe for dry rub seasoning. After that initial experience with dry rub seasoning, I have to admit it is my go-to choice for seasoning meat, and even veggies, for quick meal prep.

A simple mix of dry ingredients that can be stored for months in an airtight container, dry rub seasonings are the perfect way to spice up your next meal of chicken, salmon, steak or even tofu or veggies. It’s easy to create your own flavor themes as well, from Mexican to Greek, Indian to Southern Barbeque, the flavor combinations are endless.

Many of the ingredients you will need to make your own dry rub seasoning you already have on hand in your pantry

or spice cabinet. Experiment with flavors and keep a few seasoning mixes of your own on hand for when you need a meal in a pinch. These dry rubs are quick, easy and inexpensive to create, and can be stored for months in any airtight, lidded container in a cool, dry place.

Here we share a basic dry rub seasoning recipe. But, experiment with flavors to create your own personal favorites. For instance, leave out the cayenne pepper if you don’t like the heat, add ground coffee to enhance the flavor of beef (and tenderize it) and add smoked paprika for a smoky sweet flavor. Keep a few of your favorite dry rub seasoning blends on hand for quick meals any day of the week.

Elevate your next weekday meal or your next big weekend barbecue to celebrate Father’s Day or your recent graduate.

Homemade Dry Rub Seasoning Versatility of Dry Rub

Whether cooking in a smoker, on a grill or in a skillet, dry rub seasoning blends can elevate your dishes to a new level. When grilling over an open flame, this recipe calls for “indirect grilling,” in which you have the open flame on one side of the grill and cook on the other so that the meat is never in direct contact with the flame. This is to ensure that, because of the brown sugar in this recipe, the layers of seasoning melt and caramelize, not burn. The dry rub will create a beautifully caramelized, flavorful crust on the meat (or veggies) and seal in the meat’s juices.

Ingredients :

• ¼ cup Kosher salt

• ¼ cup freshly ground black pepper

• ¼ cup brown sugar

• 1/3 cup smoked paprika

• ¼ cup chili powder

• 3 T. garlic powder

Directions:

FAMILY CARE | LIFE + CULTURE 30

LEARN ABOUT HIS FAMILY TREE

Family heritage websites can offer insight into dad’s past and be an interesting way to study the history of your family. Present Dad with a report on his ancestors or dig in together!

PLAN A STAYCATION

You don’t need to go very far to have a great time with Dad! Explore a new neck of your own woods with a family staycation. You can go out on the town, stay at a fancy hotel and maybe even enjoy some room service!

GO BIRD WATCHING

Lay out a blanket in your backyard and grab your binoculars for a peaceful, naturefilled day. Make a list of how many different kinds of birds you see and guess if you can identify them.

GO BOWLING

Bowling is a timeless classic Dad is sure to enjoy. Bonus if the bowling alley has an arcade, chicken wings and Dad’s favorite beverage of choice.

PLAY FRISBEE GOLF AS A FAMILY

Find a local frisbee golf course and grab a slot for the family to play. This activity is fun for both young and old and helps you take advantage of being in the beautiful outdoors together.
