Here we find ourselves anticipating the holiday season while we close out another year—how did that happen so fast? This issue celebrates the giving season with ideas for giving gifts and volunteering your time. On the following pages, we bring you a new twist on our gift guide this year . . . we asked our Bend Lifestyle team of writers and photographers to share what they have in mind for gift giving this season. The holiday season can be an ideal time to welcome a new pet into your home. We sought helpful advice from local animal shelters about what to consider before adopting, and ways you can support their work in our community. A huge shout-out to CCREW for helping us adopt a kitten a couple of years ago! As we gear up for this ski season, you may have noticed Stio Mountain Studio in downtown Bend, which opened last year. We talked with them to learn more about their sustainable brand and their top picks in this issue... another idea for your holiday shopping! This issue marks the kickoff of our annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign. Last year, City Lifestyle gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need. (Adds Stephen Sullivan, Stio’s founder/CEO), in 2022, we continued our commitment in reducing and completely offsetting our carbon footprint through our partnership with Climate Neutral and Bluesource. The holiday season can be a time of cozy warmth and togetherness, and it might be the perfect time to open your home and heart to a new furry family member. If your family has been thinking of adopting, with a bit of planning and consideration, the holidays just might be the perfect time. Below are three of our local animal shelters and rescue organizations with a wealth of adoptable pets in their care. If you are not looking to adopt, there are other ways you can support their work in our community.

CASCADE CANINE RESCUE EAST AND WEST (CCREW) What began as a passion project to rescue mostly terrier type dogs labeled “pitbulls” led to the founding of this beloved rescue organization. They received their 501c3 status in 2015. CCREW’s mission is to “save animals from urgent situations and address pet overpopulation and neglect through spay and neuter.” Three years ago, CCREW also began rescuing cats as well. “Our number one need… FOSTERS!” states Ashley Germak, PR and Foster Coordinator for CCREW. “Fosters are the lifeline. We can only save more animals if space is available,” remarks Germak. “Many dogs and cats coming in have not been nurtured, well socialized or given proper veterinary care. Foster homes provide a safe environment for an animal to blossom, which gives them the best chance for loving, permanent homes.” As a small organization managed by a few volunteers, CCREW is also in need of monetary assistance. Other needs include: cat litter, kitten kibble and wet cat food, along with adult and puppy food. And, of course, volunteers committed to their mission. CCREWDog.org

HUMANE SOCIETY OF CENTRAL OREGON (HSCO)

A part of the Central Oregon community since 1961, HSCO “endeavors to strengthen the human-animal bond by advocating for and compassionately caring for animals.” HSCO is not only a place to adopt animals, but helps reunite lost pets with their families on a daily basis. This organization also takes an active approach to help reduce overpopulation of cats and rabbits in the area through their “Community Animal Program,” which offers spay/neuter and vaccinations. “After someone has visited and fallen in love with one of our shelter animals, the adoption process is simple,” states HSCO Director of Partnerships Lynne Ouchida. “Interested adopters fill out a questionnaire to walk them through the thought process of adding a new furry family member.”

BRIGHTSIDE ANIMAL SHELTER Located in Redmond, BrightSide Animal Shelter is a “dedicated nonprofit committed to creating a brighter future for animals in our community,” states BrightSide Development and Marketing Coordinator Savanah Wellman. BrightSide also operates a pet food pantry. According to Wellman, “On average we assist three to five people daily by providing essential dog and cat food, ensuring their pets receive proper care even during challenging circumstances.” “We would love to see more pets find warm and loving homes during the holidays,” Wellman remarks. “It’s just important to remember that embracing a furry friend is a commitment that lasts a lifetime.” BrightSide welcomes monetary contributions, along with donations of pet food and supplies. Volunteers are also needed to work in their thrift store and provide foster homes for animals in their care. BrightSideAnimals.org

MountainStar Family Relief Nursery at Work in Central Oregon Support For Families in Times of Need ARTICLE BY DONNA BURKLO

That shoulder-lowering, deep breath-inducing wave of relief once a vexing problem has been solved is uniquely calming and satisfying. And it’s a feeling that parents and caregivers in crisis just don’t ever get to feel – without a lot of help. And help can seem unattainable, keeping that moment of relief far from reach. Families in all forms and in all stages will have moments of crisis. For those living houseless, facing legal battles, or navigating health issues while also trying to care for a baby or young child, the stress can lead to behaviors that endanger the child’s healthy development. MountainStar Family Relief Nursery offers programs meant to alleviate the barriers to asking for help. Their mission is to prevent child abuse and neglect through community support and therapeutic services that help vulnerable children and families succeed. They accomplish this by walking alongside families every step of the way. This approach has earned them the respect and trust of their program participants. Kara Tachikawa, Executive Director, came to MountainStar as the Program Director in 2019 having seen the difference their approach can make for a child. In her previous childcare position, she encountered a young boy who was born while his mom was on parole from drug abuse charges. He started life in foster care, shuttling back and forth as mom stumbled to get clean. Tachikawa had taken note of his behavior.

“He would have physical and verbal outbursts. Yet I also noticed that, at age four, he was able to verbalize what he needed to help him calm down. This is very unusual. It turns out, he was a MountainStar participant. I came to work here to be a part of what worked for that child,” Tachikawa remembers. MountainStar is a Central Oregon resource, having services in Bend, Madras, Warm Springs, Prineville, Redmond and La Pine. Want to help? • Spread the word! As a community we all benefit from the healing and flourishing of a child and their family in our midst. • Become a Fairy Godparent! Be paired with a child and their family providing direct needs from winter coats to gas cards. • Become a volunteer! The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”

'Tis the Season In recent months, Negroni Cocktails have made a comeback, appearing at weddings, events and holiday gatherings. When carefully crafted, this holiday cocktail blends three liquors and seasonal spices that smell and taste like Christmas. “Gin is very versatile and when properly infused, it makes excellent cocktails year-round,” says Ryan Johnson, owner of Sips Cocktail Catering. This holiday beverage promises to be the star of any gathering and can be paired with heavy appetizers or desserts.

Christmas Negroni I N G R E D IE N T S • • • •

1 oz Campari 1 oz Infused Gin (recipe below) 1 oz Vermouth Orange peel, cinnamon sticks, star anise for garnish

DIRECTIONS To make infused gin, toast two cinnamon sticks, two star anise pods, five cloves, a teaspoon of black peppercorns, and three fresh bay leaves in a dry pan until fragrant. Transfer into a mortar and pestle and crush. Add the spices to your ¾ favorite bottle of gin, seal it, and give it a good shake. Leave overnight, or for up to 3 days in a dark space. When ready, strain into a pitcher using a cheesecloth or coffee filter to remove the spice bits. Pour the infused gin back into the bottle and get ready to make the Negronis. Pour each liquor in an ice filled shaker or mixing glass and stir until cold and blended well. Pour over one large ice cube (sphere ice works the best), twist the orange peel on top and garnish with the cinnamon and anise. Cheers!
