Gratitude

November 2023 PUBLISHER

Jane Rial | jane.rial@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Lynette Confer | lynette.confer@citylifestyle.com

In this season of gratitude, our November issue is dedicated to stories of giving back to our community, gathering for the holidays, welcoming guests and spending time with family and friends in the cooler weather. With the giving season upon us, we spotlight local organizations who help those in need, and how you can lend a hand this year. Take a closer look at these opportunities on the following pages to volunteer, possibly by helping to serve a Thanksgiving meal or by financially supporting these organizations who do so much to make a difference in our community. If you’re hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year, we’ve included ideas to design a unique tablescape to make it even more special. You may decide to change things up a bit this year . . . like starting new traditions that can give your gathering a refreshing twist and even make it less stressful to plan and prepare. Be sure to see the ideas in this issue to get started. And if you’re welcoming overnight guests, we reached out to the designers at Area Rug Connection in Bend for tips on creating a cozy guest room. See their tips for simple, thoughtful touches in design that can make your guests feel more comfortable and look forward to coming back. As we usher in cooler weather, consider enhancing your home and outdoor living space with a hot tub or swim spa. Sinking into the warm soothing water with friends and family while enjoying a glass of wine and looking up at the night sky is the perfect way to enjoy Central Oregon in your own home’s space. We reached out to the experts at Aqua Hot Tubs in Sisters for ideas to make the most of your outdoor living space with hot tubs, firepits, barbecues and the growing-in-popularity indoor home saunas. Here at Bend Lifestyle, we are grateful for those of you who support so many wonderful organizations and help make Bend the vibrant community that it is. We are especially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps every month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories from our community directly to you. We wish you a heart-felt Thanksgiving filled with gratitude. Blessings to you and your family,

A THANKFUL COMMUNITY ARTICLE BY JULIE E. FURNAS

Sharing is Caring and Makes a World of Difference

As the month of giving begins, it’s time once again to shine a spotlight on local organizations and events that feed our underserved communities during the holidays. Thanksgiving can be an especially traumatic time for low-income families, newly sheltered and houseless individuals who simply cannot afford traditional meals served this time of year. While the city of Bend and surrounding communities are well known for coming together to help with needs like food, shelter, clothing, financial resources, and job assistance – the week of Thanksgiving is a time when the Central Oregon community really steps up to the plate. With financial help from the community, careful planning and volunteer help, organizations in Madras, Sisters, Prineville, Redmond, Bend, La Pine and beyond can serve a special Thanksgiving meal for those who truly need it. During this holiday week, the Central Oregon Homeless Leadership Coalition reports that non-profits will feed over 1,000 people hot meals in our communities. Statistically, these meals are often a starting point for individuals to consider using local resources to help themselves and their families towards a better path. “The number of meals served has increased in our community and while that may sound like distressing

16

G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE

news, there is an aspect of it that is promising. Much of the increase in meals is going to those who have recently become sheltered in the many new shelter options that have become available in the past two years. This means more stability and easier access to regular services like meals, which results in more long-term positive results,” says Donna Burklo, Executive Director for Family Kitchen, a non-profit organization. This year, Family Kitchen will likely serve around 600 meals for Thanksgiving dinner, which is typically how many meals are being served per day out of their building – an average of 4,200 per week. Serving holiday meals also gives new volunteers the opportunity to give their time, use different skills and connect with the community in a new way. Program and Event Coordinators for feeding the community during Thanksgiving report that as many as 50-100 volunteers come on board to help prep, cook, serve, and clean up. “Serving alongside family, friends, and strangers is a beautiful way to observe a holiday set aside for giving thanks. There is something about being in community with a wider gathering of our neighbors serving and sharing a common meal that is quite impactful. Many who serve for the first time on a Thanksgiving Day find themselves signing up as regular volunteers year ‘round,” explains Burklo.

Slip into Serenity HOT TUBS AND SAUNAS PROVIDE MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH BENEFITS Installing a hot tub can turn your yard into a real oasis. Slipping into those warm bubbles and having the jets massage your muscles can just melt away the stresses of life. Aqua Hot Tubs in Sisters can help make this sanctuary a reality. In business since 1992, Jared and Mackenzie Fillmore took ownership in May. They already owned Aqua Clear Spa Service, which they acquired from Mackenzie’s father in 2022. The local couple loves helping their neighbors choose the right products for their lifestyles. “Hot tubs provide a lot of therapy in multiple ways, but I also think they provide serenity,” says Fillmore. “You can go out there with your special someone to talk and relax. People also like being outside and hot tubs can be used and enjoyed in almost any type of weather.” There are many different designs and sizes, and they can be customized. “We actually have many customers looking for smaller tubs, like our Joli, which is the perfect tub for any couple. But, it’s big enough to have guests in there too.”

All of the hot tubs offered by Aqua Hot Tubs are elegant and have all the extras such as colored lights and waterfalls. Aqua Clear Spa Service also offers monthly maintenance service for a no-hassle experience. People are also really interested in swim spas, Fillmore adds. “What they really like about those is the model we have available where there are two separate bodies of water so they can have one hot and one a little bit cooler — it’s the best of both worlds.” Another spa item that is gaining in popularity is the sauna. “There are a lot of health benefits to those too, and people are just starting to learn about them,” Fillmore notes. “The main one is better blood circulation, which can help with inflammation and helps cut down the strain on the heart.” Saunas are usually placed inside the home, and they can be very small with a bench seat for two plus a heater, or as large as an entire room. “We’re the only company in the area to offer traditional Finnish saunas made by Finlandia,” states Fillmore. “The material used is very high quality and they put everything together board by board using traditional cedar wood. The heaters that Finlandia makes are also better than the rest. They get hotter and they can sustain that temperature to provide the maximum benefits.” The professionals at Aqua Hot Tubs make sure that what they sell is properly installed. When purchasing a hot tub, a site assessment is done. For example, the home’s electrical system might have to be upgraded and the tub placed on a concrete pad. If it’s not set up correctly, it can affect the life of the unit, which should be at least 20 years. Saunas also require a lot of electricity, and proper installation is a must in order for them to work properly. Aqua Hot Tubs also has barbecues, grill inserts, smokers, solo stoves and fire pits, along with all the accessories needed to create the ultimate backyard living space. They have someone on staff capable of designing decks, landscaping and hardscaping as well, and then refer homeowners to trusted professionals to bring those designs to fruition.

In home saunas are gaining in popularity and offer a wide range of health benefits.

OLD

and New CELEBRATING MOMENTS THAT MAKE MEMORIES

ARTICLE BY LYNETTE CONFER

FAM ILY CA R E | L IFE + CULTURE

Thanksgiving. It’s not just about the food we eat, or the way our table is set. It’s about those we gather with. It’s about our intention and the time we dedicate to those we care about. It’s about the opportunities we create for connection. Maybe you have a few family traditions you honor each Thanksgiving… or perhaps you are looking for a few new ideas for activities or opportunities that might become traditions for you and your family and friends. Traditions can be ones that start when your own children are young, or they can be passed down through generations. Or, they can begin this year when you try something new with your crew. Traditions can be the threads that weave together memories that carry us through the year, and even those times we are apart from the ones we love. In many ways, they create a fabric, a tapestry that reflects the colorful threads of our shared experiences. Thanksgiving means different things to each of us. Even if you do not recognize the holiday, you probably feel the pull to slow down, rest and reflect. Maybe you look forward to preparing and eating nourishing food and spending time with those you care about. As fall begins to turn to winter, Thanksgiving, for many, marks the beginning of the holiday season. These days many feel overwhelmed with the pace of everyday life. If you are feeling added stress to prepare and present the perfect meal for Thanksgiving, take a deep breath. What are your favorite memories of Thanksgiving days gone by? From the food you prepare to the dishes you use, to the things you do before, during and after your Thanksgiving meal, traditions exist for us all. Traditions can offer comfort and connection, and they do not have to be complicated or complex. This year, why not try something new? Opportunities are endless. From eating your Thanksgiving meal in holiday pj’s, to a movie marathon after your meal, to watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, to hosting a pie baking contest or Christmas ornament exchange. Traditions are the simple act of celebrating the time we are given to gather with those we love. We at Bend Lifestyle wish for you and yours a beautiful, bountiful, and blessed Thanksgiving. Give yourself and your family the gift of time. The gift of connection. Creating memories and finding the meaning in even the small things can serve as a reminder that the most important thing at Thanksgiving is those gathered around you. CONTINUED >

W R I T E ( O R D R AW ) W H AT Y O U A R E THANKFUL FOR With the frenzy of daily life, it’s easy to overlook how much we have to be thankful for. Everyone around the table this year can participate in this simple, yet powerful, activity. At each place setting provide a piece of paper or card and a few pens or markers. The act of physically writing down what you are thankful for creates a pathway for recognizing the multitude of blessings that surround us. Before you begin eating, go around your table and let everyone share what they are thankful for.

S TA R T A F A M I LY RECIPE BOOK For many families, Thanksgiving is about the dishes and recipes that we enjoy year after year. It’s easy to lose some of those favorite recipes as our kids get older, as our parents get older. Why not begin to gather those recipes to create your own Family Recipe Book? Send out an email to everyone in your crew to invite them to share favorite Thanksgiving (and beyond) recipes, stories and photos. With a little help from some tech savvy family members, create a shared google file folder where everyone can upload their contributions. But, you can also get these contributions the old-fashioned way. With no shortage of online programs for creating books, you can begin to collect and preserve your traditional family favorites into a treasured collection for years to come.

HOST A THANKSGIVING POTLUCK There’s no need to prepare the entire Thanksgiving meal alone! Allow everyone in on the fun of meal preparation by allowing them to bring along their favorite holiday dish. For those living in the same household, create time and space for them to join in meal preparation by letting them prepare their favorite side dish or dessert. Each dish will have meaning, maybe something passed down through the generations or borrowed from a friend. Encourage each person to share what makes the dish special to them before the meal begins. This is a meaningful way to lighten the load and share the joy of preparing the Thanksgiving feast that just might become a new favorite family tradition.

With the gorgeous Central Oregon landscape in our backyard, no matter the weather, there is always an opportunity to take a stroll after your Thanksgiving meal. Whether you choose a short stroll or a longer, more moderate hike, spending time out in nature is a great way to catch up, connect and converse… or just stave off the turkey coma. Depending on your holiday guests, make a list of a few local walks to choose from and let everyone weigh in on choices. Then, bundle up and venture out. This might just become a new, beloved Thanksgiving tradition for you and yours.

Create a Cozy and Welcoming Guest Room YOUR GUESTS MAY NEVER WANT TO LEAVE

Expecting company this holiday season? If so, turn what may be a rather plain, sterile extra bedroom into a lovely and comfortable guest room. Here to help is Jenny Lanker, co-owner of Area Rug Connection, and Victor Ellingsen, its manager and designer extraordinaire. “For bedroom rugs, most folks typically want something pretty, luxurious and soft under the foot,” says Ellingsen. “We usually encourage accompanying that with a nice pad that’ll soften it up even more.”

Items for a coz y and welcoming g uest room:

Soft, Cushiony Rugs Add Warmth and Comfort

Pillows and Throws Add Comfort and Luxury

Since many of the colors in a bedroom usually come from bedding and drapes, Ellingsen and Lanker often recommend a rug with muted colors. A neutral color rug allows more versatility when it comes to picking other fabrics in the room. “A bolder print or pattern can be used in an accent pillow or the artwork in the space instead,” Ellingsen notes. “We have such a wide variety of pillows that we sometimes joke that we could be the ‘Pillow Connection.’ We have bespoke hand-made pillows that are made out of vintage Turkish rugs and really fun pillows made out of velvet, linen, leather and other fibers.” While Area Rug Connection doesn’t carry bedding, they work with a couple of different companies and can help with customers’ special orders. “We do have beautiful throw blankets that people can cozy up in and read a book,” states Lanker. These can be draped over an ottoman or bench at the foot of the bed. The store carries a great selection of benches and ottomans for visitors to set their luggage upon or to sit down and put on their shoes. “We also have chairs that can be placed in a corner or somewhere else

in the room so guests can have a nice place to sit and relax.” The store also carries a great collection of gorgeous lamps and other lighting to offer guests soft, gentle light. “Another thing people can do in a guest bedroom to make it even more cozy is to add candles,” Lanker suggests. Customers can find those as well as candle holders, baskets, vases, trays and other items that make a room feel comfortable and welcoming. The store also displays artwork by well-known designer, Amber Lewis. In addition to all of this, Lanker takes frequent buying trips to bring in pieces from all over the world, including China and India. “I found an altar table made from a 100-year-old beam from a farmhouse in Mongolia, and a vintage 150-year-old chest from China that was on the steps of a Buddhist temple.” Many homeowners may feel overwhelmed by all these possibilities, but not to worry. Lanker, Ellingsen and the other design consultants are all on hand to help. They can collaborate with customers to create that perfect room for guests. The only problem may be that the guests may never want to leave! AreaRugConnection.com

Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table. Candlesticks, vases, little pumpkins and gourds, or fall decor you have on hand can make a great centerpiece. Add fresh flowers or dried foliage for that extra layer of texture and color.

The Traditional Table For this classic, traditional look, a plaid throw blanket stands in for a tablecloth to establish a festive base layer. Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display.

The Fall Garden Party Table Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky.

The French Country Table Rustic yet elegant, this tablescape combines the love of traditional, vintage and natural elements with an updated twist. The Spode Woodland Collection transferware designs are rooted in proper hunting tradition. The fawn table runner mimicking deer spots brings an earthy, yet elevated foundation as the base for this table setting. Coordinating fawn napkins wrapped with twine and topped with natural feathers creates a whimsical touch. The stunning centerpiece starts with a vintage silver water pitcher that is then filled with fresh, sweet arrowwood Viburnums leaves. To complete the look, pair crystal glasses with vintage crystal stemware. NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E. C O M / BE N D
