LIFESTYLE LETTER

Home Sweet Home

March 2022 PUBLISHER

Jane Rial | jane.rial@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Cheryl Parton | cheryl.parton@citylifestyle.com

As I write this for our Home issue, I’m experiencing a weekend getaway in a yurt. In the winter. But before you think that I’m a fan of roughing it, let me explain. This yurt is decked out—complete with a pellet stove, bathroom, electricity, a comfy bed and colorful, bold décor that make me feel right at home. I look forward to stepping outside of this cozy den and stargazing tonight. Home is meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love, and a shelter from the outside world—a place where you can let your guard down and just be… Since during the past two years we’ve all spent more time inside our home than ever before, we’ve had an opportunity to rediscover ways to enjoy our living spaces, even repurpose them. Remodeling and DIY projects have never been so popular! Creating a home where you want to spend all of your time isn’t easy. In this issue we’ve offered a few creative ideas, including decorating with plants, refreshing old furniture with new upholstery, and eating at home with ideas from Daphne Oz, daughter of health guru Dr. Mehmet Oz. You’ll also learn about the local nonprofit First Story, and how they are making first-time home ownership affordable and accessible for families in our community. The memories that are made within the walls of our home are what lasts, regardless of whether our home reflects the latest trends. While it is fun to look at beautiful homes and dream about renovations, we all know that the love we share in our homes is truly what matters most. From our home to yours, we wish you health and happiness.

ROAD TRIP

Bucket List

Start Planning Now for Family Adventures Ahead

Spring is here and it’s time to start planning those bucket-list road trips. Nothing is more American than setting out on one of our vast highways to territories unknown. Whether it’s heading north to the wilds of Washington or south to sunny California, taking off on the open road in any direction from Central Oregon is the beginning of an adventure. While Oregon does have much to offer for the dedicated road traveler, new experiences and memories await in many of our surrounding areas. Plus, many places are not as far as they seem. The visually stunning high desert, forest, mountain ranges, and coastal stretches make these road trips well worth the drive. Before packing the bags and hopping in the car, be sure to research the area to make sure parks, restaurants and attractions are open and operating. Now, let’s get ready, get set, and drive!

Enjoy the small-town charm with friendly people, gift shops and restaurants along the main drag, and be sure to take a long hike in the mountains and a dip in the Wallowa Lake. Yosemite National Park

San Juan Islands, Washington

Astoria, Oregon

A visit to this famous national park should be on everyone’s shortlist. Approximately ten hours from Bend, there are several routes to choose from. With its deep valleys, ancient sequoia trees and vast wilderness, Yosemite is best known for its magnificent waterfalls and eager climbers on Half Dome and El Capitan. Especially popular in the summer, Yosemite offers year-round lodging and there’s always a good chance of seeing wildlife in their natural habitat.

Another ten-hour road trip from Bend up the coast of Washington, the San Juan Islands are truly a cluster of oneof-a-kind destinations on the west coast. Once you’ve arrived by car, take the ferry or another adventurous mode of transportation to get to the islands. With plenty of seasonal outdoor activities, restaurants, famous whale watching and more—the San Juan Islands should be at the top of your road trip bucket list.

At the tip of Oregon’s border with Washington, the charming city of Astoria is one of Oregon’s most historical ports and a little slice of coastal heaven. With its year-round festivals, shops and stunning views of the ocean and Columbia River, Astoria is well worth the drive up north. Make sure to bring an extra jacket while enjoying Victorian-style architecture, historical landmarks and chowing down on some of the best seafood in the state.

See El Capitan to understand why Yosemite is called one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World.

GREEN HOUSE + INTERIOR DESIGN DECORATING WITH PLANTS HAS PHYSICAL AND MENTAL BENEFITS

If it’s a jungle out there, then decorating with indoor plants combats the busy world by creating a sanctuary of calm and wellness within a home. A living room needn’t become a full greenhouse, but plants of all sizes add color, shape and health benefits that are both physical and mental. As natural air purifiers, species such as the snake plant and peace lily are effective at absorbing Co2, according to an often-cited NASA Clean Air Study that sought ways to keep space station environments clean. Plants also offer a calming presence in the modern world full of screen time. A key to balanced home design is finding the right plant for your space as well as determining the plant type, and

16

level of care required to keep a plant thriving. Susan and Kelly Clarke, the mother-daughter owners of local online boutique Wyldwood Living Décor say, “It’s important to consider both how much time a homeowner can devote to plant care, as well as the natural light available in a space.” The duo has a passion for design and is happy to recommend plants based on a customer’s unique needs, as well as help them style a space with baskets, pots, or another décor to complement a room. While the decorating trend may have begun with the first Earth Day of 1970, interior design integrating plants is now considered a verdant way of life. WyldwoodLivingDecor.com

New Beginnings When he founded the nonprofit First Story in 1998, Hayden Watson, Chairman of Hayden Homes, had a vision to support communities across the Pacific Northwest. Fast forward to 2022, where today, First Story celebrates its 100th homeowner. “It’s a big deal,” says Executive Director Claire Duncan. “That’s a hundred families who have achieved the dream of home ownership who never would’ve had the opportunity without First Story.” The mission of First Story is to promote giving and inspire communities through the creation of homeownership opportunities and financial support. The nonprofit partners with Hayden Homes to construct homes in their communities which are then sold through First Story’s loan program. This unique approach provides move-in ready homes to qualified applicants who are at or below 80% area median income. By providing affordable home loans, Duncan explains, First Story is addressing a critical housing shortage and finding solutions to make cities like Bend more inclusive and affordable for everyone. “There are families in Central Oregon who are working here, whose kids are attending school here, and who are volunteering in the community, but they can’t afford to live here,” she says. “These people are the heartbeat of our community. They are our teachers, nurses and entrepreneurs—they’re an integral part of our communities.” In addition to assisting families with home ownership, First Story often teams up with other nonprofits, such as NeighborImpact’s Home Source program, to educate prospective homebuyers about the responsibility of owning a home. They utilize Central Oregon’s What If We Could crowdsourcing platform to connect the local community to both monetary and volunteer needs. First Story has also given more than $2 million to other charities serving the Pacific Northwest. “We’re able to deliver on our vision while also helping other nonprofits deliver on theirs,” Duncan explains. For many, she adds, owning a home can end the cycle of multigenerational poverty, so it’s not just changing one family—it’s changing families for generations. For them, First Story allows a new chapter of life to begin. FirstStory.org

Spring Cleaning

FOR E V ERY ROOM IN T HE HOU SE CONQUER THE TASK STEP BY STEP IN A TRADITION THAT SIGNIFIES RENEWAL

The emergence of spring has long been associated with deep cleaning. It signifies a fresh home, and a new start to compliment the blossoming of a new season. Join the ranks of spring cleaners by using this guide to conquer the task. To keep the job from feeling overwhelming, schedule a block of time each day, or even each week, for your annual cleaning. Work on one room at a time and reward yourself for each room until you’ve completed the job.

T HE B A S IC S • Dust wall and ceiling light fixtures. • Remove cobwebs with a vacuum and brush attachment or a clean rag attached to the head of a broom. • Remove and wash window coverings. • Wash doors, knobs and remove dust that collects on top of doors and entryway trim. • Wash walls with an all-purpose cleaning solution. Touch up mars and chips with paint. • Empty cabinets and drawers then wash them inside and out. • Wash windows and sills, and don’t forget the tracks. • Vacuum upholstered furniture from top to bottom and under cushions, paying particular attention to creases and crevices where dust and grunge build up. • Wash baseboards, then vacuum carpet edges with a narrow attachment. • Vacuum and mop under furniture and other stationery items.

REFRESH, REVITALIZE OR UPDATE FURNITURE WITH NEW FABRICS ON OLD FAVORITES

REUPHOLSTERY TIPS • Use durable and stain-resistant fabrics for furniture used by kids or pets. • For cushions or window seats with smaller surface, experiment with playful patterns. • Consider the construction of pieces, a well-made sofa can be many years old and still remain durable. • Ask for cushion covers that can be removed and laundered.

Spring cleaning is a wonderful way to make our homes look fresh and tidy. But what about certain items, such as sofas and chairs, that may be faded or make a room look dated? It’s expensive to replace multiple pieces of furniture, and if they’re still comfortable and sturdy, it’s wasteful to toss them out. Or, what if they’re antiques or family heirlooms? We surely don’t want to get rid of those. Sofas that were made many years ago were often constructed with a high level of craftsmanship and are therefore very durable, so it’s not necessary to replace them with what’s available today. Plus, newer models may not be the right size for the room, or may not have the preferred cushion height, style or color. Reupholstering can make the old and worn look new again and give a room an entirely updated look. But, it’s important to make sure you choose the right fabric and that it’s fitted properly to your furniture and that it’s stain resistant if you have kids or pets. Veronique Waldron, owner of Studio Vero in Bend, can help choose the right fabric for your needs and design the right look for your furniture. “We have luxurious highend fabrics that are imported from textile designers in places like Italy, Belgium and Spain,” she says. “We also have performance fabrics that have FibreGuard and can withstand the assault from pets and children.” Zippers can also be added to seat cushion covers so they can be taken off and laundered. With reupholstering, the choices are great. “We have a large selection of materials, so you are the one who selects the fabric instead of just having to accept what’s available on the showroom floor,” says Veronique. “We can do a little bit of texture, and you can have the color and patterns you want. We can then add beautiful pillows.” In addition to sofas, she also gets requests to reupholster accent chairs, especially those that have been passed down from family members, as well as dining room chairs and window seat cushions. Because of the smaller surface area, people are more open to doing some complex patterns on these. Reupholstering is an easy fix to make furniture look and feel elegant, clean and inviting. And, no one else will have a custom-designed piece of furniture. It may look even better than the original.

CITY LIFESTYLE: SHARE WITH US YOUR BACKGROUND AND THE INFLUENCE IT HAD ON YOUR JOURNEY TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY. DAPHNE OZ : I was born in Philly, raised in New Jersey, and now

my husband and our four kids and I live in Florida. I spend a few days each week working in NYC taping our new syndicated talk show, The Good Dish, covering everything delicious in daytime which is a dream job for an eater by nature, by calling and by choice—like I am.

CL: WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE DINNER PARTY AT HOME? DO: When I entertain, my general approach is: Abundant Simplicity.

Appetizers are generous piles of a few different things – olives, hunks of parmesan, spiced nuts, torn bread with herby oil to dunk in, sliced Persian cucumbers with a pool of labne or Greek yogurt, olive oil, and flaky salt for dipping. I look for recipes that are simple or that I’ve made 100 times before that are always crowd pleasers and leave me plenty of time to enjoy my company. The whole point of a beautiful evening together is to make sure you, the host, are relaxed and comfortable, because your guests will take their cue from you.

CL: WHAT INSPIRED YOUR NEWEST COOKBOOK AND WHAT CAN WE GET EXCITED ABOUT? DO: In “Eat Your Heart Out: All-Fun, No-Fuss Food To Celebrate

Eating Clean” I share the techniques I’ve used to get my mind, energy and body back on track after each pregnancy or anytime I’ve needed to reboot good habits—without ever losing the joy of cooking, the fun of mealtime and the stress-free pleasure of doing it intuitively. “Eat Your Heart Out” is a collection of 150 recipes free from gluten and refined sugar that have consistently helped me lose weight without ever disappointing my demanding tastebuds—or making healthy eating feel like a job I don’t need or want. With more than 670k Instagram followers, Daphne Oz is an Emmy Awardwinning television host, New York Times-bestselling author, chef, and entrepreneur focused on innovation in food and beverage, beauty, wellness, fashion and media.
