A warm welcome starts with your home’s entryway. For seasonal design tips, we talked with Mose Lenowitz, owner of Pottery House in Tumalo. Pottery House opened its doors in June of 2020, at the height of the pandemic. With a goal of offering unique home and garden supplies, and a focus on beautiful and sturdy pottery for Central Oregon outdoor living spaces, Lenowitz says he anticipated local residents yearning for ways to dress up their home during this time. “I had the thought that everything can’t just stop,” Lenowitz states. “I thought about American tenacity and willpower and whatever that is that makes us overcome. I knew opening the shop was what I needed to do.” Featuring pottery of all shapes, sizes and colors imported from all over the world, along with water features, a wide array of art and supplies for home and garden, and a unique gift shop, Pottery House is a one-stop shop for those looking to dress up their outdoor living spaces. “We have pottery and art from local artists,” Lenowitz notes. When choosing his outside sources for pottery, Lenowitz applies his vast knowledge and expertise of pottery quality and strength, down to the materials and processes by which it is made. “Vietnam has some of the strongest, if not the strongest pottery in the world,” he explains. “This is because their clay has silica in it and they fire it in excess of 2000 degrees, so it fuses together in a way that prohibits water from getting into cracks and freezing, thawing and falling apart like other pottery does.” “All of our outdoor pottery is frost proof,” states Lenowitz. He says that often people move to Central Oregon from other areas and bring their pottery with them. “It can be a disappointment when their pottery cracks and breaks because it was not made to stand up to our climate here.” A cozy and personable shopping experience open year-round, customers arrive at Pottery House as much for the design tips from Lenowitz as they do for the distinctive pottery and design elements sold here. Pottery House offers delivery services for a fee, and they hope to collaborate in the near future with local area artists to facilitate classes in pottery, glass works, metal works and much more. “Your home is where you restore yourself, so when you recreate your home, you are recreating yourself in some way,” Lenowitz says. “When you decorate your porch or entryway, everyone sees it, it’s something to be proud of and talk to people about . . . our homes foster connection in so many ways.” Pottery.House CONTINUED >

Sculptures by local artists, and other metal or glass artwork, help recreate your outdoor entryway.
Seasonal Home Entryway and Porch Design Tips from Pottery House: • Take three pots of the same color and shape, small, medium and large. Place the largest one on one side of the entryway, with the two smaller pots on the other side. Use smooth pots and fill them with branches of different colors and textures to reflect the season. Choose pottery that reflects the season and tie it in with other home elements. • Dried bamboo can be cut to length and displayed in pottery. • Dried flowers and plants like Rabbit Brush, Yarrow, Manzanita and Sage can be great additions to pottery. • Use unique furniture like Deschutes barrel stave Adirondacks with a side table or a Talavera-topped bistro set. • Showcase glass and steel artwork, sculptures or metal wall art by local artists. Teak stars or metal art can hang on pillars. • Use winter-hardy Dwarf Conifers and Blue Arrow Junipers. • Aged-steel trellises of various heights and styles can go into pots and be dressed up with string lights, decorations and bows, among other touches. • Large hand-blown colored glass cylinders on wrought iron stands can hold electric candles or lights. • Chimineas for larger porches offer an alternative to standard fire pits. Note: All design elements can be found at Pottery House, collected with care from our fragile high desert (USFS offers “Special Forest Products” permits to collect pine cones, boughs, dead branches and more at usda.gov), or may be items you already have at home.
Dried branches, "ghost wood" and more are examples of natural accents that can be collected in some areas with a permit from the USFS.
Artificial succulents can be arranged in pottery to add texture and color for unique design elements.

Many of the design elements used in this Thanksgiving tablescape might be found during a walk around your neighborhood.
Gathering with the people we love is a gift whether we find ourselves eating off paper plates or fancy dishes. Even so, adding beautiful accents fosters meaning to the moments shared and can be just as easy to pull together. This tablescape uses touches of the outdoors with real leaves, pinecones and grapevine wreaths. These simple additions add personality and warmth to any autumn table. Using these natural accents, you will have a stunning tablescape that costs you only a leisurely walk around your neighborhood and a passing chat with a neighbor, if you are so lucky. Tips on How to Write Place Cards Writing guests' names on place cards gives an extra personalized touch to your table setting. Start with writing the name with pencil (an eraser is your friend), then trace with a thin tipped sharpie. Organizations that serve vulnerable neighbors, help sustain our planet and offer refuge and rehabilitation to animals need your help. The “giving season” is a wonderful opportunity to match your time, treasure, talent and passion with a local nonprofit. Here are four Central Oregon entities to support for a season, or all year-round.
Business owners and community members help local families enjoy holiday meals when times are tough. The La Pine Christmas Basket Association is a nonprofit directing 100% of all donations to provide turkeys, canned cranberries, corn, green beans, pies, yams, stuffing, milk, potatoes, margarine and rolls to families in the La Pine and Gilchrist areas. When available, toiletry items are also provided. Toys for Tots partners with this organization to provide gifts for children. In 2021 the organization provided holidays meals to 235 families (799 individuals). Need assistance? Applicants sign up at the La Pine Senior Center or online at facebook.com/ foodbaskets from November 1 - 28.

Cascade Youth and Family Center Street Outreach Cascade Youth and Family Center is one of the programs of J Bar J Youth Services. They provide shelter and programs for runaway and homeless youth and children. The Street Outreach Team, led by Hasani Davenport, is literally meeting these youth where they are. Currently a staff of two is handling over 200 interactions with youth 18-24 years of age each month. These are young people who have never had a positive role model to guide them. They are those who have been shunned by family for coming out as LGBTQIA+. They are second generation homeless. But foremost they are just kids trying to get by. Kids who make mistakes and kids who try really hard and still fall down. “My kids,” Davenport says, “I see them every day. I know where they are and where they move to. We work on goals.” Yet without enough housing, both in terms of low and high barrier shelter space and more permanent solutions like low-income apartments, the pattern just repeats. So, Davenport’s team does their best to keep youth warm, dry, fed, and in touch with help.
WANT TO HELP? Time: Advocate for more shelter space. Take time to learn about generational houselessness and ACEs (adverse childhood experiences). 3 Sisters Equine Refuge The all-volunteer team at 3 Sisters Equine Refuge in Redmond believes that every equine deserves a permanent and loving forever home. They offer temporary refuge to horses at-risk of slaughter, abuse, and neglect while looking to match each horse with a guardian (they do not believe in ‘ownership’ of an animal) for life. The process of recovering from trauma can take over a year. Most challenging for funding are what 3 Sisters terms “Safe Haven” horses. For their well-being, these horses cannot handle changes in habitat or guardianship any longer. They need a permanent space and familiar faces to care for them. Usually, 3 Sisters houses 8-11 of these horses on site while they also bring in rescues that will be adopted out. The average monthly cost to care for a Safe Haven horse is $350.
WANT TO HELP? Time: Assist with feeding and cleaning stalls. Talent: Spend time with the horses. Or, if you have the skills, help as a trainer. Treasure: Donate funds for hay and healthcare. The Environmental Center Since 1990, the Environmental Center in Bend has been working to embed sustainability into daily life in Central Oregon. It’s a simple mission that has led to a wide range of programs. The center’s physical space is a testament to sustainability, surrounded by a learning garden. Plans are in place for a capital campaign to further update the building and expand. Main areas of focus are: • ReThink Waste, ideas to limit consumption, reuse, repurpose, and recycle. • The Garden Program, providing experiential learning for 4th and 5th graders and supporting gardens on school grounds. • The Green Leader Coalition, a youth-led climate action initiative. • Advocacy, providing information on the effect of transportation, building, and energy choices on the environment so that community members are informed voters and active participants in change.

MOUNTAINSTAR FAMILY RELIEF NURSERY GRATEFUL FOR EXPANSION TO SUPPORT MORE FAMILIES
Safe Homes, Happy Children For the past 21 years, MountainStar Family Relief Nursery has been providing support for parents and children to help create safe and healthy home environments. In order to reach as many families as possible, the nonprofit is expanding into La Pine and also hiring new outreach coordinators in Prineville, Redmond and Madras. They are also working with the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs to determine the best services for their needs. “We're thankful for the expansion of the organization because it means that we're serving more kids and families in our communities,” says Development Director Staley Micken. “We hope to reach those families who are often on the fringes of our community who don’t have access to resources or are experiencing other barriers.” Micken notes that she is also grateful that the community continues to recognize the important services that MountainStar provides and is stepping up to invest in those services alongside their amazing volunteers and donors. “I'm also super thankful for the beautiful community of Bend that is open to supporting our whole region,” Executive Director Kara Tachikawa states. “I’m grateful for the communities that we serve as well, especially our smaller communities. They have this feeling of ‘How can we take care of each other?’ So, when MountainStar comes and explains the things that we can do and how we can make a difference for the youngest children, which is when it makes the most impact for the future course of their lives, everyone’s eyes just light up.” Fortunately, MountainStar was able to raise most of the funding for their expansion into new communities. But with rising costs, they are constantly in need of additional support for this project, along with others they hope to accomplish in the future. “We are always assessing to make sure that we're positioning ourselves to be reaching families and responding to the needs of our communities,” notes Micken. Adds Tachikawa, “We’re finding more ways to actually reach all the kids in our community to make sure that every child has the best start possible.” MtStar.org
