The Emotional Lives of Dogs UNDERSTANDING COMMUNICATION IS A KEY TO CANINE HEALTH

AS WE LIVE WITH AND INTERACT WITH OUR DOGS, WE GET TO KNOW THEM WELL. Despite their inability to talk, we often understand their emotions based on their body language. Scientists now know what dog owners have suspected all along—dogs experience a wider range of emotions than scientists once thought. The dog brain is substantially smaller than the human brain when accounting for body size, so it isn’t as complex as our brain. Yet, MRI studies reveal dogs’ brains aren’t much different from humans’. MRIs show the same sections of both the human and dog brain light up based on various types of stimuli, according to Dr. J.P. McCue, a board-certified veterinary neurologist at New York City’s Animal Medical Center in “Dog Brain Facts: Understanding Canine Cognition.” It’s also been found that dogs produce oxytocin, the neurotransmitter and hormone that creates the emotion of love in humans. In fact, research reveals that when our dogs stare into our eyes, it activates oxytocin, creating a bond similar to that between

AND BUTTERED NOODLES ON A KIDS’ MENU IN 2021? In Bend, Oregon, think again. The foodscape is as full of range and diversity as the landscape. Respecting the evolving palate of our youngest diners means that simple proteins and pasta do have a place on a restaurant’s children’s menu. However, the experience for young eaters now includes international flavors and farmto-table ingredients in an implicit agreement with parents that the introduction of new foods will help their kids expand their taste buds and palate. The introduction to a variety of foods and healthy options starts first at home and school. Nora and Zeke Greene, of Bend, both have had experiences in their classrooms that translate to the real culinary world. Nora, age nine, will be a third-grader at Highland Magnet School at Kenwood where they teach the Scottish Storyline Method. During a Storyline,

began as a 12-year-old student walking to school in San Francisco. Along the way, an errant driver ran a stop sign and struck Costa, giving him first-hand knowledge on how the responders operate. “I appreciated how the EMTs communicated with each other and myself,” says Costa. “I knew then I wanted to be a part of the team.” A big part of Costa’s work at Bend Fire & Rescue, where they work 96 hours on and 48 hours off, lies in educating the community on the importance of CPR and the STOP THE BLEED® program. Though CPR training has been around for a long time, the relatively new STOP THE BLEED® program seeks to educate the public on controlling serious bleeding. For his efforts in support of these programs, Costa was awarded a Community Service Award at the 2019 Oregon Emergency Medical Service Awards. “I believe every person should know CPR, feel well-equipped with the knowledge, and unafraid to use it,” says Costa. Back on the Deschutes River’s manmade waves, Costa and Seamons were taking a liking to the exhilaration of riding the swells alongside surfing legends and amateurs alike. Soon a core group of medical professionals began riding together, which Costa and Seamons dubbed the A1 Surf Crew, based on the fact that most of the surfers worked the B or C shifts, and their Chase Seamons PHOTO: Jesse Polay

Kids, especially kids who may be picky or selective, often like a little bit of novelty.

MAKE SNACKS AND MEALTIME FUN We all know that kids like to play and have fun, so why not make food fun? Whether you’re turning broccoli into a microphone at dinner, or playing tic-tac-toe with edible carrot sticks, kids get into it. DON’T GIVE UP Parents often assume that if a child doesn’t eat a food the first or second time it’s served, the child doesn’t like the food. Many children may need to see or taste a food 10 or 20 times before they are willing to eat it. FORCING HEALTHY FOODS ON KIDS OFTEN BACKFIRES Often, making a child eat food or eat a certain amount of food backfires. It may backfire in the short run by making a child more selective and less likely to eat the foods you want them to eat.

FISH CAT SNACKS

WHEN KAREN ROBERTSON AND HER FIANCÉ VANN FRIESEN WERE LOOKING TO ADD A MAINE COON CAT TO THE FAMILY, THEY KNEW THEY NEEDED ONE WHO WAS NOT EASILY COWED. With Vann’s two children, 14-year-old Teague and 16-year-old Tolan, plus Beckett, a 150-pound Newfoundland and Billy the black Lab, their household was a busy one. “We asked the breeder to please find us a bold cat,” says Karen. “She delivered with Sid Mittens, that’s for sure.” He was 10 weeks old when they brought him home in November 2019, and they originally named him Sid Vicious, after the punk band musician. They later changed his name due to his large paws, which they called mittens. Today, the 18-pound Maine Coon loves hanging out with his big dog brothers and the rest of the family. “He’s extremely tolerant and sweet,” she says. “Anyone can pick him up and snuggle with him. Vann’s daughter Teague, though, is his favorite person.” Sid has his own Instagram account with followers from around the world. “He actually has many Russian followers; apparently Maine Coons are huge in Russia. He’s constantly getting private messages in Russian.” @sid_mittens_mainecoon 34
