OREGONIANS AND COMMUNITY LEADERS AS A CLEAN ENERGY AGENDA DOMINATES THE NEW ADMINISTRATION’S TOP ITEMS TO TACKLE. Spending some now to save a lot in the long run is taking precedent, especially as we all look to save on energy costs and shift economies in a changing climate and post-pandemic world. Starting from the top, President Joe Biden signed an order for the United States to re-join the Paris Climate Agreement and embarked on sweeping climate actions, which includes $500 billion to switch to clean energy and cut greenhouse gas emissions. To understand solar’s role, the International Renewable Energy Agency reported China as the largest solar power energy producer having installed approximately 178,000 photovoltaics (PV) or gigawatt hours (GWh) of solar capacity with United States coming in second with 85,000 GWh, ahead of Japan, Germany, and India. WHY SOLAR? For many years in Oregon now, and in Bend, we’ve seen more homes and larger industries using solar to reduce energy costs, help conserve natural resources and demonstrate environmental leadership. According to Energy Trust of Oregon, every day five more homes or businesses go solar, and local nonprofits like The Environmental Center are helping neighbors demystify solar and find solar solutions that don’t break the bank. According to Bend-based company, National Solar, an average solar unit offsets 4.7 tons of carbon 18

Solar Experts JANELLE LANCASTER, PRESIDENT OF NATIONAL SOLAR IN BEND, TALKS THE NUTS AND BOLTS OF SOLAR ENERGY

1

What new innovations or leading technologies for solar are coming to the market? I think that we are seeing the biggest changes in storage or batteries. Technology advance-

ments in batteries, propelled perhaps by electric vehicles, has led to better performance and lower pricing. We think this trend will continue. Demand for battery backup systems has steadily grown over the past couple of years. Today about one third of our clients are asking for some

sort of storage solution to go with their solar purchase.

Is the future net metering or batteries? I think the future will involve both net metering and homeowner storage

of power. One interesting aspect of distributed storage is that these systems could be accessed not only by the homeowner but also by the utility as grid demands fluctuate during a 24-hour period.

DIY

ARTICLE SUSAN BALDANI AS A COUNTRY, WE’VE LEARNED THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ECO-FRIENDLY. Most of us recycle, some compost, and others seek out items packaged in biodegradable materials. We take the time to do this in order to help sustain and protect our environment. But there are so many other practices we can incorporate into our everyday lives to ensure that we’re doing our best for our community and for the world overall. In Bend, the Rethink Waste Project is dedicated to making sure we know how to do just that and more. “Rethink Waste is an Environmental Center program where we believe that local change can have an impact on the whole earth,” says Ani Kasch, the project’s program manager. “Each individual’s actions are visible to those around them and that can be particularly impactful in a tourist destination town like Bend. Waste management looks SO different across the world, and it’s up to each community to get it right, but we

Rethinking Waste BEYOND COMPOSTING AND RECYCLING 22

Bend Lifestyle | April 2021

can lead by example.” There are many ways we can reduce our carbon footprint and be more mindful of cutting down on waste in our households.

Five Ways to Reduce Waste:

1.

S a ve M o n ey.

The average household ends up throwing away 1/4 of the food they bring home. That's 25% of your food budget in the trash. The easiest way to waste less food is to buy only what you know you will eat and make sure to eat what you buy.

2.

No Waste and No Waist. Not wasting food doesn’t mean you have to overeat and increase the size of your waist. Instead, use a smaller plate, design a “leftovers night” into your menu plan, and make good use of your freezer for what you don’t finish.

3.

Shop Local!

Shopping locally is a great way to help reduce waste AND help our community’s economy. By purchasing locally grown food and supporting local shops, we can reduce the amount of unnecessary packaging, not to mention the reduction in fuel from transportation. (Did you know the average produce travels 1,500 miles before it gets to the store?)

4.

G i f t W i s e l y.

Think outside of the box when it comes to gifting: give a gift of experience like a rock gym punch card or a membership to the High Desert Museum; give a dozen homemade cookies; wrap your gift in an old ski map instead of using new, virgin paper that will just get tossed.

5.

Choose to Reuse.

Instead of using single-use disposables, try reusable dish rags; buy a reusable coffee cup and water bottle; bring a reusable container to the restaurant for your leftovers. When you get takeout, say no to single-use silverware

Benefits of a

chemical-free home

HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED WHAT IT WOULD TAKE TO TURN YOUR HOUSEHOLD CHEMICAL-FREE? It's not as hard as you might think! We hear a lot about the dangers of chemical ingredients, but it's easy to ignore all of the warnings and keep using our favorite products. When you don't know of a better alternative, it's just what you do! However, all of those ingredients add up and can make a big difference in your health, as well as the health of your family and pets. The products that are most important to swap out depend on your lifestyle and what you use the most. If your little ones are eating food right off of the counter, you might consider the ingredients from the cleaner you just used to wipe it down and start by switching to a natural method.

ARTICLE BY HAYLEY HYER

If you have sensitive skin, you might start by taking inventory of your beauty and personal care products to see what you can replace. To get you started, here are three DIY products that you can make yourself for your chemical-free home.

DIY Scented Body Moisturizer Just like a new candle can brighten your day, a shimmery scented lotion can make you feel like a queen. The only problem is all of the artificial fragrances, alcohols, dyes, and other chemicals that your skin is absorbing from that bottle. There are some cleaner options such as unscented lotions, but that's a lot less fun. This DIY moisturizer allowed you to customize your own scent while still treating your skin the best you can. The key ingredient? Olive oil! Yes, any bottle of olive oil from your kitchen works. Pour some in a smaller bottle and add several drops of your favorite essential oils. Olive oil is super hydrating, feels great, and will make you question why you ever used lotion in the first place. Plus it's safe for your whole body. Just be mindful of the essential oils you choose. Some types—such as peppermint, eucalyptus, or tea tree oils—cause a cooling effect and can feel uncomfortable if it gets on your face or other sensitive areas.

DIY Counter Cleaner: Safe for Granite + Marble! You probably know that vinegar is a great natural cleaner for most surfaces. Unfortunately, it can be pretty damaging to delicate countertops made from granite or marble. Here's a DIY cleaning spray that's safe for any type of counters you have!

Ingredients + Rubbing alcohol + Dish soap

+ Essential Oils + Water

Directions In a plastic or glass spray bottle, mix one part alcohol with one part water. Add several drops of dish soap and whichever essential oils you would like to add for your desired scent. Shake it up each time you use it as the ingredients will tend to separate. Although it's natural and safe, still avoid spraying directly on your skin as the alcohol and dish soap can dry you out. DIY Laundry Scent Enhancer If you have ever added those popular scent beads to your load of laundry before, you know how lovely it is to pull your amazingly scented clothes out of the dryer. The funny thing about a product like that is it truly has no purpose other than adding a good smell, but it does add lots of chemicals to your daily life! There's a safer and more beneficial way to make your clothes smell heavenly. Try this DIY scent enhancer with your next load of laundry and put it to the test.

Ingredients 3 parts Epsom Salt + 1 part Baking Soda + Essential Oils

Directions Mix your ingredients together in a jar or canister and scoop about ¼ cup directly into the washer basin before adding the clothes—just like you would with scented beads. Continue with your laundry like normal.

While these three recipes give you a great start, that's definitely not all you can do to kick the chemicals out of your home. For more information on starting a chemical-free household, you can browse online resources such as ChemFreeCom.com or find a social media group to join with like-minded people who have some experience from their own trial and error. If you get overwhelmed, remember that you don't have to get rid of all chemicals in one day. Every swap you make is something to celebrate!
