With correct watering, organic fertilizer, soil, and a lot of light, several different types of basil can thrive indoors. Best grown in the summer months, basil is used in all types of cooking, can be used in home and body products and is great for cocktails!

Place chives in a south-facing window or a spot that receives at least six hours of natural light. Keep the soil moist by watering frequently and making sure there is proper drainage. Fresh chives are a tasty ingredient in both cold and hot dishes and are a beautiful aesthetic to any kitchen.

R O S E M A R Y

The secret to growing rosemary indoors is using the correct soil, a porous pot with plenty of drainage, like a terracotta pot, a ton of sunlight and daily check ins. Only water rosemary when soil is completely dry and give it lots of room to spread its branches out. When strictly maintained, rosemary is a delicious ingredient in seasonal food and beverages and an eye-pleasing decoration for the home.

A NOSTALGIC RECIPE, REINVENTED ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY ITZEL WIEWEL

A COMFORTING MEAL HAS THE POWER TO TRANSPORT YOU. The scrumptious smells wafting past your nose start the nostalgic film projector of your mind — memories of childhood with jubilant days gone by, and a parent’s loving care. It makes you feel warm and cozy; it tastes like home. This classic pot pie recipe has a vegetarian twist that is packed with flavor and a healthy dose of vegetables that leave you wanting more. It’s perfect for those cold final days of winter and late season blizzards that we sometimes enjoy in Bend. The recipe makes two golden pies. Serve one for dinner and save the other for an effortless night. The whole family will enjoy this savory gravy topped with a flaky pastry crust — it’s comfort food at its finest!

20

Bend Lifestyle | March 2021

GOLDEN POT PIE + 3 cups of diced potatoes + 1 3/4 cups sliced carrots + 1 cup butter + 1 onion, chopped + 1 cup all-purpose flour + 1 tsp. salt + 2 tsp. fresh thyme leaves + pepper to taste + 3 cups vegetable broth + 1 1/2 cups milk or oat milk + 1 can garbanzo beans + 1 cup frozen peas + 1 cup frozen corn + 4 sheets refrigerated pie crust 1. Preheat oven to 425. Place potatoes and carrots in a large saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cook 8 minutes or until crisp but tender. Drain. 2. In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onion; cook until translucent. Stir in flour, salt, pepper, thyme, and slowly add broth and milk, continually stirring until thickened. Add vegetable mixture. Remove from heat. 3. Unroll pie crust into two 9-inch pie plates. Add the filling. Place remaining crusts over the filling, trim, seal and cut slits in tops. 4. Bake for 35 minutes or until lightly brown. (TIP: To prevent the bottom crust from getting soggy, pre-bake the crust for 10 minutes before adding filling, and bake pie on oven’s lower rack.)

LOCALLY OWNED Results Neck & Back Therapy

ARTICLE SUSAN BALDANI

S p i n a l H e a lt h MAINTAINING A STRONG FOUNDATION FROM THE INSIDE OUT

LIKE A HOUSE, THE BODY REQUIRES A SOLID FOUNDATION IN ORDER TO FUNCTION AT ITS MOST OPTIMAL. With both, ignoring minor issues can lead to major problems later on. Kevin Bourlai and Lesley Berger, physical therapists with Results Neck & Back Therapy in Bend, understand the relationship between a healthy neck and spine and a high quality of life. The ability to play, work, and even rest comfortably depends on aligning and strengthening these inner body structures that keeps everything operating like a well-maintained machine. With a high number of people at all ages developing debilitating problems of the neck and spine, focusing exclusively on these two areas allows the two therapists to devote their expertise and a range of specific equipment to treating these issues. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A PHYSICAL THERAPIST? KB: I grew up playing organized soccer and hockey and experienced some knee and shoulder issues. I visited physical therapists and probably drove them crazy with all the questions I had about anatomy and various treatments. I didn’t realize it at the time, but that was probably when “the seed” was planted. LB: After exploring other medical professions, I decided physical therapy was the best option for truly being able to make a difference in people’s lives. As PTs we have the opportunity to spend much more one-on-one time with our patients when compared to other healthcare providers. Additionally, we have the knowledge base to help our patients recover from injury, restore functional mobility, and safely return to recreational activities, resulting in an improved quality of life. 26

and neglect, the economy tanked, forcing Tamara to do a lot of the work herself. To stay on budget, she went to estate sales and redesigned furniture to fit her vision for the house. Out of this experience, a new brand was born— Growing Days, Tamara’s interior design, furniture, décor and lifestyle business.
