The lessons of change from 2020 can apply to restyling living space. Staying home is an invitation when a room is welcoming and reflects your personal style. There are many options for customizing furniture today that allow expression of individualization. Choose from a variety of wood finishes or fabrics, whether the luxury of velvet or the

like many people going west they were following dreams. Maurie’s dream was to open a retail store, and in 1938 he opened what was then called Sterling Furniture in Eugene. Fast forward 83 years, and today a family of seven stores known as the M. Jacobs Fine Furniture “family of stores” has grown from that first business to include M. Jacobs in Bend, stores in Eugene as well as Michael’s Leather and Oak, Michael’s Home Store and M. Jacobs Mattress Gallery. The family legacy continues under the leadership of Maurie and Sylvie’s daughter, Sheila and their son-in-law Michael Schwartz. The M. Jacobs Fine Furniture store in Bend has been open since 1980 and has evolved to provide Central Oregon buyers with not only full line and top brand name home furnishings, but contemporary lines that provide customization options to consumers. Family traditions are central to the M. Jacobs business and to the personal life of the extended Schwartz family. Michael and Sheila have been married 54 years, have three daughters, three sons-in-law, eight grandchildren, and four dogs, all of whom return to Eugene each year for the holidays. While creating comfortable home environments is part of the M. Jacobs business, at the Schwartz’s own home they have created an important gathering place, especially at the holidays. As their family has grown, Michael has invited family to stay in alternate accommodations for more room, but that hasn’t worked. “Everyone wants to be ‘in’ the house,” where they can all be together, he says. “They all find a way to be at home for Thanksgiving.” 14

AS WINTER APPROACHES, CENTRAL OREGONIANS FACE A NEW CHALLENGE - A WEAKENED BODY This year in a word, is unprecedented. Never in our lives have we experienced the curve balls life has thrown our way. For winter sports lovers, the idea of skiing and snowboarding is a light at the end of a very dark tunnel. However, this year is different, and for most of us, preparing for winter sports will be more of a marathon than a sprint.

are excellent, these sports require different areas of strength in the body. Skiing and snowboarding put a significant amount of strain on the knees, hips and the back. Therefore, hip and core strength are critical for proper rotation when doing these sports. Glenn’s recommendation: get ready now.

“We’ve had many bike injuries this summer, much more than we normally see,” said Bend physical therapist, Glenn Maclean-Talbot PT, DPT. Glenn is Bend’s go-to guy for getting ready for ski and snowboard season. Every November, he puts on a series of classes to help winter sports lovers get in shape. This year, however, there is more work to be done. “Because of COVID, most of us have had a different level of activity than in prior years, so we are in a different preseason shape this year,” said Glenn. “Combine this with the countless injuries, aches, and pains people have experienced this summer. We are going into the season in a much-weakened or imbalanced state.” But getting in shape for winter sports goes much deeper than being able to spend a day at Bachelor “shreddin’ the gnar.”

That fall you took two months ago that you are still feeling is likely to rear its ugly head at the most inopportune time. In addition to any injuries, Glenn recommends not ignoring the extra five pounds put on since COVID hit or the nagging neck pain from sitting at an illequipped home office desk all day. Address all of these things before the winter season starts. If you don’t, you will end up compensating and put yourself at a higher risk for another injury that could ruin your season. The best way to get better is to tune into any pain present and relay that to your physical therapist. Doing so will help ensure the appropriate therapies are recommended and implemented.

“Many people wait all year for winter sports and spend three quarters of the year moving their bodies at a slower rate or with not as much force as is required in the winter,” said Glenn.

“A physical therapist will give you a game plan for what is needed - whether that be a longer approach utilizing a variety of therapies or just a strengthening program,” said Glenn. “Some injuries take weeks while others take months.”

A lot of locals bike/hike/run in the summer and ski or snowboard in the winter. While all

Being proactive will ensure your success. The sooner you get started, the better.

"Cheesy" Broccoli Soup FALL IN BEND MEANS BRISK AND COLORFUL WALKS THROUGH DRAKE OR SHEVLIN PARK THAT HOPEFULLY LEAD TO A COZY SOUP WAITING FOR YOU AT HOME. This “cheesy” broccoli soup is an easy to prepare, one-pot type of soup. It has become a staple for my family during the colder months. You add all the ingredients and forget about it. It is homey, comforting, and the perfect healthy and reinvigorating meal for a cold or rainy day. I like chopping up crusty French bread into cubes and toasting them with a little bit of olive oil for fresh croutons to add on top.

i n g re d ient s + 6 medium russet potatoes, peeled and diced + 3 carrots, diced + 1/2 yellow onion, diced + 4 cups broccoli, chopped + 32 oz. vegetable broth + 1 cup almond milk + 1/2 cup nutritional yeast + 2 Tbsp. lemon juice + salt and pepper to taste

i n st r uc t ion s 1. Peel and dice the potatoes, carrots, onions, and chop the broccoli. 2. Combine all the veggies and liquids in a pot. 3. Simmer on medium heat until all of the veggies are tender. 4. Smash with a food masher or fork. 5. Add salt and pepper to taste. 6. Top with homemade croutons for the perfect finishing touch. I usually cube a portion of a crusty French baguette or loaf and sauté with a bit of olive oil or bake until crunchy for simple, scrumptious croutons. Note: Don’t worry about the liquid not covering the vegetables completely, it is going to reduce down to be thicker.

GIVING BACK

WALKING THE WALK

A JOURNEY DOWN THE WINDING LIFE PATH OF UNASSUMING SPIRITUAL LEADER FRANCIS CHAN

IMAGINE YOURSELF AS THE LEADER OF A THRIVING MEGACHURCH IN VENTURA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, WITH MORE THAN 5,000 MEMBERS AND GROWING. You’re a New York Times bestseller making a million dollars in royalties from your first book and people love you—you’re on top of the world. Would you leave that all behind? Better yet, would you trade all of that, giving away 90% of your income to end up living in the poorest region of Hong Kong surrounded by people struggling to make it by on just 50 cents a day? For most, it probably sounds like a tale of riches to rags; an unfortunate and unwanted result of someone falling upon hard times. But for Francis Chan, a church planter and best-selling author who speaks to thousands of people around the world each year, it’s exactly what he did. And exactly what he needed—an opportunity to walk down a winding path that led him toward fulfilling his purpose; toward becoming a

man who can truly say he lives the life he’s been called to and encouraging others to do the same.

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)

Watch the full interview @ CityLifestyle.com! Francis, born in San Francisco, was raised in a very traditional Chinese home and navigated a challenging upbringing. His mother died while giving birth to him. His father remarried, then his stepmother died in a car accident when he was 8. His father remarried again, then, when Francis was 12, died of cancer. Twenty-six and newly married, Francis and his wife Lisa founded Cornerstone Community Church in Simi Valley, California in the early 90s, beginning with a membership of 30 people. Within the first two months, the church grew to 100. By 2000, membership grew even more to 1,600. And by 2008, Cornerstone Community Church was one of the largest in Ventura County and Francis’ then-new book “Crazy Love” was a New York Times bestseller. Then, in 2010, Francis decided to leave it behind in pursuit of a more humble and impactful way of life. The $1 million his bestselling book made in the first year, plus the money it continues to make? Francis signed it all over to a charitable gift fund helping the poor and victims of human trafficking. After making the decision to leave Cornerstone and wrestling with what the next step would be, Francis and Lisa ended up selling their Simi Valley house and moving their family of six at the time overseas to India, Thailand and China, where he was able to embrace new interests and activities by doing what the locals do, and where he also saw an inspiring shift in culture and spiritual values. “I wish we could learn and see the sacrifice of others,” he says. “Their mentality really isn’t a consumer mindset of ‘Here’s my needs, here’s what I feel, no one cares about me— me, me, me, me. Overseas they’re just obsessed with each other and thinking about how to get to the poor—the truly poor—like ‘We’re going to starve today,’ or ‘We’re selling off kids today.’ That type of poor. There’s just a lot more urgency.” In the throes of a pandemic, quarrels over U.S. politics, a growing divide among people and beliefs, and the unsurety of life, Francis’ message of focus and fulfillment can be summed up simply: take your eyes off yourself.

“People that I’ve found that have spent their lives truly loving others are the j o y f u l p e o p l e .” 28

Chardonnay, Viognier, Gewürztraminer and Rhône White Blends pair delightfully with many of the dishes found on the Thanksgiving table. For example, pumpkin soup or butternut squash with brown butter and sage is a delicious match for a richly textured Chardonnay. The warmer spices of autumn, like nutmeg, cinnamon and clove, are complementary to this style of wine, as many have similar notes interwoven with toasted oak nuances.

REDS Pinot Noir, Beaujolais and lighter bodied Cabernet Franc from the Loire Valley make excellent companions to the savory, herb-inflected dishes at a typical Thanksgiving feast. The elevated acidity, as well as the nuances of mushroom and dried herbs, make these wines stellar accompaniments, keeping your palate refreshed while elevating the complementary notes found in the food.

ROSÉS In years past, most people wouldn’t think to pull out their favorite rosé to

Fuller-bodied rosé made with Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet Franc are excellent matches for the richer foods that make their way to the holiday table, the juicy acidity keeping your palate from becoming tired and overwhelmed from all the sumptuous dishes.

BETHLEHEM INN’S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR BELIEVES IN THE POWER OF TRANSFORMING DIFFICULT SITUATIONS INTO SILVER LININGS

ARTICLE CHERYL PARTON

AS BETHLEHEM INN’S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SINCE 2010, GWENN WYSLING HAS GUIDED THE NONPROFIT FROM ITS BEGINNINGS AS A SMALL SHELTER IN A MOTEL TO ITS NEW EXPANDED CAMPUS WITH 112 INDIVIDUAL BEDS AND 10 FAMILY UNITS. “The greatest remedy for suffering is gratitude,” says Gwenn. As a personal practice, she records the things she is grateful for in a book, and the list is long. “Gratitude helps me focus on what I have, not what I want or don’t have,” she says. Five things on Gwenn’s gratitude list:

01

“The essentials of happiness—freedom, a smile, purpose, and being able to share that with others.”

“A loving community where I live, work and

04

“Working in a caring organization with people (staff, volunteers, residents and supporters) who understand the importance of service and giving back.”

05

“Belief in a Higher Power that watches over all of us, though we may have different names for this entity. I am grateful for a spiritual force of good in our world that helps us overcome difficulties, challenges, hurts and losses like those we have seen this year and over our lives and helps us to build a sense of resilience in our hearts and in our world.”
