THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER BRING TO MIND LAZY, RELAXING TIMES WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY BUT ALSO ARE A BITTERSWEET TURNING POINT FOR MANY OF US. Summer freedom is drawing to a close, and the start of school is just around the corner. While the days of floating the Deschutes may be numbered, this month also brings a sense of renewal as we look ahead to new routines, new clothes and new school supplies. And because we dedicated an issue to both the women and men of our community earlier this year, it would only be right to celebrate some of our most lovable residents: kids and pets! For busy families, finding balance is always a challenge. We looked for some words of wisdom by profiling one of Bend’s busiest families—that of Drs. Steve and Stephanie Christensen and their children. Then as we approach back-toschool, read how the local nonprofit “Backpacks for Bend” is tackling hunger in our community for school-aged children.

Tips for Staying Limber When Traveling Adventures abound in the world but sometimes getting there can be hard on the body. A few modifications, tools, and stretches will have you ready to begin exploring when you reach your destination. In order to get to a destination, we often need to travel by train, plane and automobile. The way we sit during this time is crucial to minimize back and hip pain. Bend, physical therapist, Siiri Berg provides the following tips for helping you stay limber when traveling. Pack a Camp Pillow. My favorite tool and one that I will never travel without is a blow up camping pillow. This small pillow easily stuffs in a satchel that is small enough to store in your purse, carry-on, or pocket. Because it is adjustable, you can customize it to any seat you may encounter. 1. Fill the pillow with just a bit of air and allow it to act as a lumbar support. The idea is to fill in the gap between the backrest and your body, but not to force your back into overarching. 2. Place the pillow in the upper back and neck area to support the gap if your begin to feel tension in the upper back and shoulders. 3. Ideally your hips should be higher than your knees. Fill the pillow more firmly and place it under the sit bones to give the hips relief. Move. The more you move the less stiffness you will encounter. Stopping a time or two during a long drive to stretch your legs and walk for a few minutes can make the difference between needing a
“recovery” day after arriving and being able to start your vacation immediately. Stay Hydrated. Drinking plenty of fluids forces you to stop more often and get up. Just a few minutes of walking and standing to use the restroom will help keep your joints loose. Pack a Tennis or Lacrosse Ball. Unless you are on a lavish spa retreat with a personal massage therapist at your beck and call, a tennis ball can be a handy substitute. • Place the ball on the back side of the hip and lean against the wall to loosen your gluteal muscles and help relieve back and hip pain. • Place the ball in the corner of a pillowcase and drape it over the shoulder to reach that pesky spot between the shoulder blades. Move back and forth to massage the area. Stretch. There are plenty of variations of hip, back, and neck stretches that you can easily do while sitting. Here are a few to try: • Sitting figure 4 - while sitting, rest one leg horizontally over the knee of the other leg. • Sitting hamstring stretch - while sitting on the edge of a chair, straighten one leg in front of the body with the heel on the floor. Sit up straight and try to push the navel towards the thigh without leaning the trunk forward. Hold for 30 seconds. Repeat on the opposite leg. • Trunk rotation • Shoulder rolls • Try rolling forwards and backwards • Try rolling on shoulder forwards while the opposite one goes backwards simultaneously • Repeat going the opposite direction

AS SUMMER COMES TO AN END, WE FIND OURSELVES BUMPING INTO MOUNTAINS OF “BACK-TO-SCHOOL SALE” SUPPLIES AT EVERY STORE. With such displays of excess, it’s often hard to remember that there are those who have nothing. During the 2018-2019 school year, the Bend-La Pine School District had 7,901 students enrolled in the Free and Reduced-Lunch Program. The Homeless Leadership found a 19-percent increase over the last year in the number of homeless youth under the age of 18, and 9,000-plus children and family members received some type of assistance through the Family Access Network (FAN). The needs are vast to provide stability for these students to have a chance at success in school and life. To that end, schools’ FAN Advocates offer direct assistance as well as referrals to outside agencies for students and their families. One of their go-to partners is Backpacks for Bend. BACKPACKS FOR BEND WAS CREATED TO BRIDGE WEEKEND HUNGER GAP Backpacks for Bend was founded in 2009 by Amy Bryant Fraley and her mother, Mary Bryant. The goal was to fill a backpack with enough high protein, non-perishable food that a child would be well-nourished for the weekend away from school meals. The backpacks offered a way to provide food without it being obvious to other students. In 2018, as the program grew beyond the needs of volunteer assistance that Fraley was able to roust up weekly, it became a program of The Giving Plate, a food pantry in Bend that maintains a focus on providing food for children. “I learned from Mara Stephens, Bend-La Pine School District’s homeless liaison, that 467 kids were registered as homeless this year. It was like a stomach punch,” says Ranae Staley, executive director of The Giving Plate, “We had to get involved.” At the start of the previous school year, The Giving Plate coordinated packing of more than 300 bags of food every other week. Each pack included peanut butter, ramen, apple sauce, granola bars, fruit snacks, oatmeal and pudding. Since many of the students are homeless, foods could not require refrigeration or cooking.
“I LEARNED FROM MARA STEPHENS, BENDLA PINE SCHOOL DISTRICT’S HOMELESS LIAISON, THAT 467 KIDS WERE REGISTERED AS HOMELESS THIS YEAR. IT WAS LIKE A STOMACH PUNCH,” SAYS RANAE STALEY, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE GIVING PLATE, “WE HAD TO GET INVOLVED.”
COMMUNITY PARTNERS MAKE IT HAPPEN First Interstate Bank is a key partner of Backpacks for Bend. Food is stored in their conference room and once every other week, their employee/volunteers pack sealable baggies for delivery to FAN Advocates who place them in backpacks. First Interstate then donates $10 per hour for each volunteer’s time back to the program for purchasing food and supplies. Supporting programs such Backpacks for Bend creates a path toward success as local children head back to school. Nutrition is the very basic supply these students need to do their best. BARK IT UP If your dog doesn’t settle for plain, kick these treats up a notch by incorporating some of these dog-safe fruits and vegetables:
+ BANANAS—In moderation, bananas are great treats for dogs. Just beware of the sugar content—they shouldn’t be part of your dog’s regular diet. + BLUEBERRIES—Blueberries are a superfood full of antioxidants and fiber. Try these as a substitute to training treats. + CARROTS—Carrots are a great low-calorie snack high in beta-carotene and fiber. Chomping on them is also great for your dog’s chompers. + GREEN BEANS—Full of fiber and low in calories, plain green beans are great prepared any way! + WATERMELON—Filled with vitamins and potassium, this summer treat is sure to be your pup’s new favorite. For those dog days of summer, watermelon is a great way to keep your dog hydrated! Just be sure to remove the rind and seeds. Learn more about safe food for four-legged friends at AKC.org.
