Deschutes River Conservancy’s RiverFeast The Deschutes River Conservancy (DRC) held their RiverFeast Dinner and Auction on May 17 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Central Oregon. Gift of Music Fundraiser The Cascade School of Music (CSM) held their annual Gift of Music Fundraiser on May 11 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Smith Rock Ascent Trail Race The Smith Rock Ascent trail race was held May 18-19 at Smith Rock State Park. A portion of the 50-kilometer, 15-mile, 4-mile and kids run entry fees went to support the Central Oregon Running Klub’s Youth Program for kids ages 5-18, which focuses on fostering a lifelong passion for running. Upper Deschutes Watershed Council’s Upstream Fundraiser On May 17, the Upper Deschutes Watershed Council held Upstream at Brasada Ranch to share the work of students and celebrate watershed education. The community event was a fundraiser for The Upstream Project, a watershed education program which seeks to educate, engage and activate the next generation of environmental stewards. THE MOSTEST Style of Music: Folk Jam Band Why you should see them: The Mostest has been a Bend mainstay since 2006 and is the creative outlet for guitarist and songwriter Mark Ransom and bassist Patrick Pearsall, who have seen close to 50 top local musicians play with them on stage or on records in their ever-evolving jam band. The full lineup—Ransom on guitar, Pearsall on bass, Dylan Bernal on drums, Patrick Ondrozeck on keys, and Cutmen Horns’ Dave Van Handle and Jason Jackson on trombone and trumpet respectively—allows the band to take Ransom’s introspective Americana folk tunes and transform them into guitar-driven, soulful songs. 2019’s Teleport People is the fourth full-length CD release from The Mostest, but their upbeat live performances prove why Ransom and Pearsall have been able to tour Oregon and Colorado on a consistent basis. MAXWELL FRIEDMAN GROUP Style of Music: Neo-soul Funk Why you should see them: Regulars to Bend’s concert scene know 15-year-old Maxwell Friedman as the kid on organ who regularly sits in with famed bands, such as Karl Denson, George Porter Jr., and The New Mastersounds, when they stop in Central Oregon. One of the youngest players to be endorsed by Hammond Organs, Friedman was chosen as artist-at-large for both the 4 Peaks Music Festival and California’s High Sierra Music Festival this year. In 2018, Friedman rounded up talented jazz and funk players—bassist Mark Karwan, drummer Connor Streeter and guitarist Gabe Johnson—to work on what he calls, “Inspired neo-jazz funk soul fusion.” Fresh off the release of their first album, Beyond Neblar - Live in Bend, Friedman is well on his way towards the neo-jazz, funk powerhouse he seemed destined for at a young age. CJ NEARY BAND Style of Music: Jazz Fusion Why you should see them: CJ Neary is the very definition of the word “prodigy.” Neary picked up a fiddle at age five and began cultivating his love for music. It wasn’t long before his pure talent and determination lead him to win multiple national fiddle competitions and appear on the Grand Ole’ Opry stage in Nashville. Locals know Neary as the 12-year-old fiddle player in the BendBroadband commercials. Musically mature well beyond his years, Neary—now a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist—released his 2019 album, A Groovy Kind of Music, with a CD-release party drawing close to a thousand people to downtown Bend. Washington Drive and Northwest Crossing Drive Artist: David Govedare What it commemorates: This piece, made of basalt, granite, steel and copper is suggestive of an ancient totem with contemporary pictographs including deer, a skier, and a television. It might take a few rounds to see them become evident, but the images give the piece an entirely new meaning. In the words of the artist, whose father taught him to arc weld at ten years old, “I like to see sculpture outdoors, highlighting different places. Even places that don’t seem special, they’re made special just by having art there.” 20

The 6-foot metal sphere has been compared to a giant’s bowling ball heading from the Phil’s Trail complex downhill toward the Deschutes River. This piece was created with an oxyacetylene torch on steel by an artist who approaches making art in a, “Serious yet playful way.” Zebold, who had an early passion for drawing, often uses reclaimed and recycled metal from scrapyards for his projects.

Bachelor Drive Artist: Lee Kelly What it commemorates: Award-winning artist and author Lee Kelly is one of the premier artists of the Pacific Northwest. He leveraged his 50-plus years of sculpting experience to create Sound Garden, a stainless steel representation of organic musical notes rising above native plants and trees of Central Oregon. Kelly spent several years traveling the world to fuel his love of art, architecture, and high-altitude adventure and mimics this in many of his pieces. Typically diagnosed with medial heel pain that often radiates into the arch and toes, plantar fasciitis often begins following a recent increase in weight-bearing activity or changes in footwear. Many people consider plantar fasciitis to be a runner’s condition and yes, it does happen a lot to runners. But it also happens to hikers and people who just enjoy walking. Pain is usually most noticeable with the initial steps after inactivity or with prolonged standing/walking. Many patients report their pain being at the highest point with the first few steps in the morning. Healing is a long and arduous process because blood flow to the plantar fascia is typically poor. Prolonged healing and ongoing symptoms can last for months or years if not properly addressed.

Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis Before you hang up your running or hiking shoes it is important to know that there is a treatment for plantar fasciitis, but it requires a commitment to fully heal. Don’t you deserve a treatment that truly eliminates the problem? Evidence supports a variety of noninvasive and home interventions including taping of the foot and ankle, over the counter foot orthotics and night splints. Night splints are worn while sleeping and stretch both the Achilles’ tendon and the plantar fascia. Other highly effective treatments include manual therapy, focusing on ankle mobility and calf flexibility and physical therapy. Once pain goes away, it is critical to not get lax about home treatment

While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isn’t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than cold-pressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you don’t have a skin-safe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils).

INGREDIENTS ++ 2 cups crushed strawberries, leave berries chunky, not fully mashed ++ 4 cups sugar ++ 3/4 cup water ++ 1 (1.75 ounce) package dry pectin ++ Mason jars

DIRECTIONS 1. Combine crushed fruit with lemon juice in a large bowl. Add sugar one cup at a time, mixing thoroughly after each addition. Let stand 10 minutes. 2. Combine water and pectin in a small saucepan. Bring to a full boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly. Boil one minute while stirring. 3. Add pectin mixture to fruit and stir for three minutes. 4. Spoon jam into jars leaving 1/2 inch space at the top then apply lids. Jam is ready to eat immediately but may set at room temperature for up to 24 hours. Refrigerate up to three weeks or freeze for up to one year. Thaw frozen jam in refrigerator before using to enjoy the taste of summer all year long.
