AT HOME A HISTORIC BEND HOME THE SUSTAINABLE DESIGN OF RICK WRIGHT BOOKS, RECIPES, HEALTHY LIVING AND COLOR OF THE YEAR
An Ace Against Pickleball Elbow Pickleball fever is sweeping the nation as one of its fastest growing sports. In Central Oregon, athletes of all ages are enamored with the physical, mental and social benefits of their beloved pickleball. However, when elbow pain flares up, the most effective long-term treatment is often ignored. While gentler on the body than tennis, pickleball is not without risks. Lateral epicondylalgia, also known as tennis elbow or pickleball elbow, is a common overuse injury. While typically self-limiting, pickleball elbow can sideline your ability to play for many months. Plus, if recovery is not complete, there is a high risk of recurrence. “Unfortunately, we rarely see patients in the early stages when it is easier to treat,” said Mathew Henninger, PT, DPT, OCS at Step & Spine Physical Therapy. “We can help patients achieve a faster and more complete recovery when physical therapy is started early. It is a much longer recovery process when treatment is initiated after the injury has progressed.”
When Acute Pain Becomes Chronic When it initially develops, lateral elbow pain is felt only when playing pickleball. The most effective treatment includes rest, icing the elbow, NSAIDs, and special stretches and strengthening exercises. However, many reach
for a tennis elbow strap instead. Elbow straps are only good for symptom relief but do not fix the problem. Without proper treatment, tennis elbow can evolve into a degenerative disorder where tendons begin breaking down and become weakened. In order to heal, the body must be in an inflammatory phase, which is the phase that occurs right after an injury. Ignoring pain bypasses this vital stage of recovery and pushes you into the danger zone of degeneration. Eccentric exercises are recommended to promote healing as they have been shown in studies to resolve pain faster. These exercises stress the tendon in a way that improves circulation so the injury can heal. If you find yourself with pickleball elbow, experts agree that you should take two weeks off of playing to rest. You should also ice your elbow and modify your activities to avoid aggravating it. After two weeks you can slowly integrate normal activities into your day if it is not painful. If the pain is not resolved in four weeks, it is time to see a physical therapist. Sometimes other issues may be preventing your recovery. “As with any tendon-related injury, it is critical to see someone sooner rather than later,” said Mathew. “If you want to get to back to your activity, don’t let acute pain become chronic.”

and create fond memories with loved ones. It’s the epicenter of our world, where we start and end each day, and where we keep our most treasured possessions. This month, we bring you our Home issue, which is full of ideas for creating the best environment wherever you call home. We also share the story of how one of Bend’s most historic homes, the G.P. Putnam House, links not only to Bend’s earliest years, but to aviator Amelia Earhart. And be sure to read about the sustainable (and beautiful) work of home designer and steward of our rivers, Rick Wright. With springtime on its way, there’s no better time for a little DIY project. Q&A
I wanted to learn more about Hale Men’s Clinic, a new medical clinic here in Bend that specializes in men’s health, specifically Testosterone Replacement Therapy, or TRT, so I checked out their website. It definitely got my attention! It all sounded great . . . almost too good to be true. Along with some other online research I did, I was starting to think that TRT was a miracle potion or the fountain of youth which left me more skeptical. I decided to call the clinic and get the facts. I spoke with the doctor that owns Hale Men’s Clinic, Kristian Ferry MD. Here are the questions that I asked and his answers:” — Jeremy Shay

About 10 p.m. on a late February night in 1912, newlyweds George Palmer (G.P.) Putnam and Dorothy Binney Putnam arrived at the new Bend railroad depot after a threemonth honeymoon. Their honeymoon had taken them 6,000 miles by ship from New York City to six Central American countries and up to San Francisco, then via train to Portland and then into the little village of Bend, population 536 in the 1910 census. The couple was then escorted by neighbors, Morris and Mabel Lara, to their new home at 606 Congress, a home neither newlywed had ever seen before that night. The Lara’s own house at 640 Congress is now one of the most picturesque bed-and-breakfast establishments in Bend. G.P. and Dorothy named their four-bedroom,

shingled bungalow, “Pinelyn.” It is still on the original site, its exterior virtually unchanged in more than 100 years. It was the third most expensive building constructed in Bend in 19111912, boasting 2,800 square feet of living area and costing more than $4,000. A tennis court was added to the site in 1913, solidifying “Pinelyn” as the social center of Bend in the years to come. G.P. had arrived in Bend in the spring of 1909 and soon purchased a one-half interest in the Bend Bulletin. He was the sole owner a year later. He had also been appointed mayor of Bend when he was only 22 and was later elected to a full term. He was the major force behind the creation of Deschutes County with Bend as the county seat. Educated at Harvard and the University of California at Berkeley, he was an heir to the New York City book publishing company, G.P. Putnam’s Publishers, Inc. Hearth Warmers TITLES AND TASTES FOR YOUR HOME, HEART AND HEALTH
BOOKS TO WARM YOUR HEARTH, HOME, AND SPIRIT Much like home, Dudley’s Bookshop Café welcomes guests into a comforting place to settle in with favorite books, coffee and people. The shop offers a curated selection of new and used literary fiction, guidebooks and ever-changing staff picks, hot coffee and tea, plus cozy chairs and an upstairs meeting nook for gathering. Below, owner Tom Beans shares some of his favorite titles on the topics of home, hearth and family. DudleysBookshopCafe.com
Upstream: Selected Essays MARY OLIVER “For a lot of us in Central Oregon, ‘home’ is really found in the outdoors,” says Beans. If that’s you, this collection of essays from celebrated poet Mary Oliver will help you appreciate how lucky we are to live where we do, he says. (Editor’s note: Oliver passed away January 17, 2018.)
Hearth: A Global Conversation on Identity, Community, and Place EDITED BY ANNICK SMITH AND SUSAN O’CONNOR “Hearth” can mean different things to different people. Beans says, “This excellent multicultural collection shows us that, in the end, it’s a pretty primal idea we all share. Even in a chaotic world, hearth is a place of warmth and comfort. A place we need to return to again and again.”
Only Love Can Break Your Heart ED TARKINGTON Reflecting on the topic of family, Beans says, “There are so many great fictional families in literature but this is an under-the-radar staff favorite.” It’s a coming-of-age story in 1970s Virginia wrapped in a mystery, but it’s so much more, he says. “The prose is pitch-perfect and the characters are all too real. Sometimes you’ll love them and sometimes you won’t, but hey, that’s how families work.” 24

+ 1/4-1/2 cup + 2-4 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce (Use low sodium)
+ 1/4 cup + 2-4 tablespoons rice vinegar + 2 tablespoons fish sauce (optional) + 2 tablespoons thai red curry paste + 1 tablespoon fresh ginger + 1 tablespoon sambal oelek (chili paste) + The juice of 1 lime + 1 tablespoon Chinese five spice + 1 teaspoon black pepper + 2 tablespoons sesame oil + 1/4 cup + 1 tablespoon brown sugar + 2 cups wild mushrooms, left whole or button mushrooms, sliced
+ 4 packs Ramen noodles, seasoning packets discarded
+ 4 soft boiled or fried eggs, for serving + Chopped carrots, sliced jalapeño, cilantro, green onions, for serving
3. In a small bowl mix together the melted coconut oil, curry powder, miso, brown sugar and a good pinch of pepper. Add the cubed squash to a greased baking sheet and pour the curry mixture over the squash. Toss well. Bake for 30-40 minutes, tossing a couple of times during cooking. You want the squash to be lightly browned and crisp. 4. Meanwhile, remove the pork from the crockpot and add the mushrooms. Cover the crockpot and crank the heat up to high. Lightly shred the pork with two forks or your hands. 5. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sesame oil. Once hot, add enough pork to cover just the surface of your skillet, do not overcrowd the skillet. Sprinkle a little brown sugar over the pork, add 2 tablespoons soy sauce and 2 tablespoons rice vinegar, toss. Allow the pork to caramelize, about 2 minutes. Stir and allow the pork to continue to caramelize, about 3-5 minutes total. Remove the pork from the skillet, repeat with the remaining pork. Keep the pork warm. 6. Add the Ramen noodles to the crockpot and allow them to cook 5 minutes. Once the noodles are cooked, stir in only half of the pork. Ladle the soup into bowls. Top with extra caramelized pork, curry roasted acorn squash and an egg. Season the egg with salt and pepper, Add the carrots, jalapeños, green onions and cilantro if desired. Happy slurping!

LOCAL’S CHOICE COLOR OF THE YEAR
AS SURE AS COLOR EVOKES MEMORIES AND EMOTIONS, EXPERTS STUDY THE
LIVING CORAL
COLORS THAT ALIGN WITH OUR PLACE AND TIMES TO PREDICT TRENDS FOR THE FUTURE. For 20 years, folks at the Pantone Color Institute have combed the world looking at color influences to name their Color of the Year. In 2019, they selected Living Coral described as, “Sociable and spirited, (it) welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity,” according to Pantone. The coral color is vibrant and energizing yet can be precious and elusive like its namesake under the sea. When discovered and added to a home, it provides a lively and vivid presence, a playful expression and a gateway to a kaleidoscope of color. If an aesthetic was translated into the word optimistic, it would look like Living Coral. 2
