EARLY THIS MORNING I WALKED OUTSIDE TO CARE FOR OUR HORSES AND ONCE AGAIN FELT A WAVE OF GRATITUDE TO BE ABLE TO START MY DAY THIS WAY. And when I can close the day by spending relaxing time with them in the evenings, it’s been a good day. Our Dalmatian, Trey (shown above), loves to walk alongside me as we approach the barn, then happily wanders through the field and comes running back, tongue hanging out, looking very satisfied at all the jack rabbits he stirred up. Our animals are a constant source of love and companionship and add so much joy to our family. I can’t imagine life without them. We’ve dedicated this issue to stories about pets and kids. Even more welcoming is the head of their eight-year-old Vizsla, Gus, who pops his head out of a custom-designed dog-level window as a greeting. When it comes to designing a personal space, the Letourneaus succeeded in highlighting their personal passions: architectural design and animals. Scott, an anesthesiologist, and Karen, founder and owner of Bend retail gift/décor shops Lone Crow Bungalow and Lark Mountain Modern, both originally hail from the East Coast and came to Bend 20 years ago with an appreciation for the past. “I’ve always been interested in the history of a place and its architecture,” says Karen. After staying at the Lara House, one of Bend’s original Craftsman bungalows, the couple was intrigued. “Bend’s first Big Boom was during the Craftsman Movement,” adds Scott. Having always been enamored with the craftsman style, they took this as a sign that moving to Bend would be natural fit. Research of not only Bend’s Craftsman history, but tours of the Gamble House and Bungalow Heaven in Pasadena gave the Letourneaus the inspiration they needed to build their own custom home in Bend. Following the principles of Greene and Greene architectural design, the home features detailed woodworking, and pitched rooflines and overhangs—which have Asian influences of their own—and are well-adapted to the Central Oregon climate by protecting the home from bright afternoon sun in the summer to keep it cool. Though not seen, the home is built of insulated concrete forms, a building practice that

and a custom-built door leads to his own outdoor room of the house where a porthole-inspired window allows him to greet visitors and see views of seven mountain peaks on a clear day. Karen (a self-professed “animal nut”) and Scott (a skilled naturalist and outdoorsman) have found the Vizsla to be a dog well-adapted to the Bend environment. The Hungarian short-hair breed is athletic and perfectly suited for long mountain bike rides and hunting. Gus is the fourth Vizsla for the Letourneaus, following beloved Tristan (a.k.a. Tigger), Scout and Dixie. The couple has rescued three of these four dogs and are advocates for this route of adoption. “People think all rescue dogs come with baggage, but that’s not always the case,” says Karen. Gus is a well-mannered “goofy gentleman,” she says. The love of dogs and all animals is evident in the art and collections throughout the Letourneau home. That enthusiasm is apparent in Karen’s shops in downtown Bend. Much like their personal home journey, the beginnings of Karen’s first shop in 2001 are rooted in the Craftsman style. Originally named Bend Bungalow, the shop began entirely devoted to the arts and crafts movement. Today, the expanded store features Bo the crow (an acronym for Bend, Oregon) as the namesake for a curiousity-driven collector. Similarly, after purchasing and extensively renovating the 100-year-old E.M. Thompson Building downtown, Karen opened Lark Mountain Modern, named for Oregon’s state bird the Meadowlark, which is also a play on the word for “happy adventure.” Happy adventure brought this family to Bend where they created their unique imprint in the community and a home that reflects history, their passions and gives a lucky dog the best view in town.

ORTHOPEDIC HYGIENE TIPS

for Injury Prevention and Healthy Aging It is a misnomer to believe that the fittest you will ever be is in your youth. Getting older doesn’t have to mean that you’re unable to do the same things you did when you were younger. It just takes two things: a proper warm-up and preparation. Preparation means not neglecting our orthopedic hygiene. Just like brushing your teeth prevents tooth decay, certain exercises strengthen the body to prevent injuries. Here are five things you can do for optimal orthopedic hygiene. 1. Strengthen Weak Hips and Core Weak lateral hips is a common problem because of days spent either walking in a straight line or sitting down, not using our gluteus (butt) muscles. The same is true for our core. As soon as we sit down, we shut off our glutes and core, which become weak. Planks are a great way to strengthen this muscle. Start on knees and hands and progress to a full plank position when you can maintain good form for 1 minute. 2. Keep the Spine Supple The thoracic spine tends to become stiff due to the amount of time we spend sitting. Loosen a stiff mid-back by stretching for 30 seconds after 30 minutes of sitting. This can be as simple as a doorway chest stretch or a mid-back twist stretch in a chair. 3. Keep the Rotator Cuff Strong The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint. Keep this area strong with a resistance band that is light enough to allow for a smooth range of motion during rotation exercises. Avoid compensating during the exercise by using the shoulder and back muscles. Perform exercises in two sets of 30-50 repetitions to strengthen the muscles and improve the health and durability of the tendons, which is where muscle breakdown occurs. 4. Keep Tissues Hydrated Like a well-lubricated piston, we need movement to keep the body’s tissues supple. This can be achieved through various forms of soft tissue work, including foam rolling and drinking half of our body weight in ounces of water each day. 5. Lubricate the Joints Cartilage doesn’t have direct blood flow and, in turn, heals slower than other tissue, such as muscle. Cartilage requires movement to lubricate the joints thoroughly. Ensure your ma jor joints (knees, hips, and shoulders) have a full range of motion. This keeps cartilage lubricated and healthy by pushing out old synovial fluid and drawing in new. It’s as simple as remembering that motion is the lotion. Exercise is an integral part of health maintenance. By incorporating specific prevention and orthopedic hygiene exercises, you can significantly reduce the risk of injury and allow your body to age more gracefully. Here’s to healthy aging!

meet RED + SUE Sue Jackson is an equine massage therapist specializing in equine sport therapy. With a background in physical therapy and massage therapy in humans, Sue didn’t originally plan on mixing her two passions of healing and horses until 1990. A champion for keeping horses as healthy and happy as they can possibly be, Sue believes equine massage therapy prevents and reduces the effects of injuries and joint problems in horses.

“I’m Red, and I’m a stunning (if I do say so myself ) 23-year-old, half-thoroughbred, half-Arabian horse. I may be getting up there in age, but I certainly don’t show it! My person, Sue Jackson, says I’m a young spirit, and we love to stay active together by going on trail rides and participating in sports such as dressage. I’m always approaching the world with a wide-eyed curiosity, happily greeting every person and horse I meet. We live next door to my best friend, a Mustang, who I run around and play with. My favorite treats are pellets with berries, but you can bet that I have to earn them first! Sue had been looking for the perfect horse like me since she was ten years old and her father decided she was ready for a horse of her own. While she’s had 10 horses throughout her life, our bond is unique and special. On the day we met, I was already 18 years old, but Sue knew we’d be a match made in heaven. meet BLUE + LORI Lori Hayden is a retired police officer originally from California, with an extensive background in training and handling K9 police dogs. Dogs have been an integral part of her life since she was a little girl, where she trained her first dog at the age of ten. Lori was also a professional skateboarder at the age of 19, and stunt doubled for Linda Carter in Wonder Woman. Currently, she lives in Redmond where she continues to raise and train dogs. Her two important rules for dog training are 1.) Never ask your dog to do something that you can’t reinforce, and 2.) “Your dog should absolutely adore your trainer,” Hayden says.

“Hello, I’m Blue, and I’m a two-year-old Bluetick Coonhound. The ultimate key to my heart is a “doggy dollar”—a yummy, circular beef snack that I’ll happily do anything to earn. I’m a really good boy because of my person, Lori, who has been a dog trainer for many years, and has taught me everything she knows about obedience. I feel like the luckiest dog in Central Oregon to live on so much land, and to be able to be around horses, cows, and other dogs every day. My best friend is Nelson Ellsworth, a oneyear-old chocolate lab who gets to hang out with me and Lori around the barn. Lori is Nelson’s trainer, and she has worked hard on teaching him to be an outstanding canine citizen. Boy, has he come a long way! While Lori has taught him a lot of valuable skills, I definitely take some credit as her teaching assistant. Nelson used to be so scared of little things like walking across slick floors in the house, but I helped him conquer his fears by walking right by his side.”

meet OLIE + JAIMIE Jaimie Sines is the Hospital Administrator at Riverside Animal Hospital in Bend. She believes that the best part of her job is working alongside the staff and doctors, getting to know clients (both human and furry friends), and helping out with the care of animals that come to the hospital. “Hey everyone, my name is Olie, and I’m a 117-pound, two-year-old Mastiff. As a giant breed of dog, I’ve got a heart that’s just as big. I’m one lucky dog, because I get to go to work every day with my person, Jaimie, who works at an animal hospital right here in Bend. When Jaimie is working, I like to spend my days taking long naps under her desk, playing tug of war, and wrestling with my best dog friend, Busy, who also gets to spend the day with his person. One of my favorite things about being at work with Jaimie each day is being able to greet all the people and pets who come into the lobby. When I’m not at the animal hospital with Jaimie, I get to hang out at home with my favorite little humans, her kids Cedar and Thatcher. We love to play all day— exploring the outdoors, chasing each other through the fields, and playing with the sprinklers in our yard when the weather is nice—which seems to be all the time during summer in Central Oregon. WILDERNESS THERAPY PROVIDES RESILIENCE FOR YOUNG ADULTS IMAGINE FEELING LOST—ALL THE TIME. For some teens, perhaps they don’t fit in with their family and they’ve separated from friends and siblings. There may be no vision or roadmap for the future. The pressure and loss are likely compounded by the reality of a traumatic experience. For many teens, this is daily life—with no imaginable way out. Enter the concept of Wilderness Therapy. New Vision Wilderness (NVW), is a wilderness therapy organization with locations in Bend, Medford, Wisconsin and Asheville, North Carolina, that provides a clinical therapeutic environment for pre-teens through young adults as they make a journey from lost to found. Whether it's a kid who has traveled the world or has the classroom intelligence of a valedictorian, “Wilderness is the great equalizer," says Drew Hornbeck, CEO, president and co-founder of NVW. "Introduce them to a new and challenging environment such as the wilderness, strip away social constructs and you have a strong foundation for building relationships. Strong relationships provide for effective therapy,” he says. Therapy within the NVW model is not the version some expect from an outdoor therapy experience. Sawyer points out, “There is a lot of misinterpretation about wilderness therapy as ‘boot camp,’” he says. “We specialize in kids who are dealing with trauma and insecurity. We believe in relational healing. (It’s) more about connection, less about hiking.” At a visit to a group in progress, the differences between assumption and reality are clear.
