New Year, New You JANUARY 2017
W
ith the New Year upon us, chilly winter nights have arrived here in Bend. For me, that’s mostly about staying snug and warm in the evenings! But, the stories in this issue have challenged me to venture out into the cold and try new experiences after dark. Although I love the outdoors on a sunny winter day, I admit I’ve never taken advantage of snowshoeing or skiing when the temperature plunges at night. New Year’s resolution: do it! Stepping out of our comfort zone is always difficult. In this month’s feature on overcoming obstacles, read how bungee jumping off a bridge changed one woman’s life. Her courage is sure to inspire you to conquer your own fears. And if one of your goals this year is to make your home more organized, check out the beautiful design ideas in this issue.

4 PEAKS ANNOUNCES NEW VENUE FOR 2017 FESTIVAL 4 Peaks Music Festival is excited to announce a new venue for their 10th Anniversary festival weekend, taking place June 15-18, 2017. Months of searching for the right site led them to Southeast Bend’s Stevenson Ranch. The 100+ acre ranch—over 60 acres larger than last year’s location—maintains the same Cascade Mountain views and mellow vibe as the previous location, but with an expanded Kids Area, more space for camping, and additional RV parking spots. “We feel very lucky to secure Stevenson Ranch for the 2017 festival,” says Festival Director Stacy Totland. “There have been many things we have wanted to incorporate into the festival that we just haven’t had the space for in the past. 2017 will be our best festival yet!” 4 Peaks is still committed to providing an intimate, family-friendly festival, but on a larger scale. Patrons should expect grander views, bigger grassy fields, a larger late night tent, and a greater selection of vendors. Most importantly, 4 Peaks is able to bring in an even more impressive lineup of world class music from around the world. 4PeaksMusic.com

report represents a 10 percent overall increase in OSU-Cascades students and a six percent increase in undergraduate degree-seeking students. Included in the official fall enrollment total are 60 first-year students and 210 graduate students. Graduate enrollment increased by 32 percent, primarily due to an increase in non-degree seeking graduate students. Additionally, OSU-C serves 93 dually-admitted students taking all of their classes at Central Oregon Community College in preparation for transferring to OSU-C. More than 90 percent of students are from Oregon, with 70 percent coming from the Central Oregon region. The enrollment increase spread across majors, with the largest majors now reported as business administration, human development and family sciences, biology, natural resources, energy systems engineering and kinesiology. The Climb for Clean Air program was founded by Lou Wittaker, who overcame asthma as a young boy and went on to climb Mount Rainier more than 250 times. The program is designed to give participants all the training, technical support and professional guide services needed to summit these magnificent mountains safely. Since 1987, Climb For Clean Air has trained over 1,500 men and women of all levels of ability to take on the challenge of summiting a mountain. Together, they have raised more than five million dollars for lung disease research. The 2017 climbing schedule includes Oregon’s Mount Hood (11,245 feet) June 8-9, Washington’s Mount Rainier (14,410 feet) June 26-29 and July 10-13, and Mount Baker (10,781 feet) August 4-6. A New Year's Eve Snowshoe ARTICLE LINDY CALLAHAN | PHOTOGRAPHY NATE WYETH
AULD LANG SYNE … IN THE WOODS
Each Central Oregon winter, the Virginia Meissner SnoPark becomes a popular destination for nordic skiers and snowshoers. The Meissner Nordic Club cares for the pristine park by grooming the trails four times a week and maintaining shelters throughout where visitors can warm up. While Virginia Meissner is gorgeous during the day—with fresh blankets of snow covering the towering Ponderosa and Douglas firs—my personal favorite time to visit this snow park is actually at night, once a year. A group of my friends have made a tradition of venturing to the SnoPark on New Year’s Eve. Now a two-time veteran of the trip, I have discovered it provides a one-of-a-kind experience, perfectly embodying Bend’s ski town culture. The park is located 15 miles west of downtown Bend on Cascade Lakes Highway. Visitors will find multiple ski and snowshoe trails with varying degrees of difficulty and length that can

A NIGHT ON THE TOWN If you’re in the mood to hit the town—or simply not cook—Bend’s restaurants, breweries, and nightlife await. Whether you choose downtown or the Old Mill District, there is something for everyone. Icicles, sparkling from the streetlights’ glow, hang from storefronts and highlight the peacefulness of a mountain town blanketed in snow. Locals and tourists alike flock to the restaurants and bars—perhaps even on skis or fatbikes. Parents look to the sky in search of stars, while children try to catch snowflakes in their mouths. Inside, smiling faces, still buzzing from a full day on Mount Bachelor, huddle around small tables, listening to local musicians and sharing stories of the day’s conquests. Start with dinner at local favorite Pine Tavern on Brooks Street. Built in 1936, the restaurant features cozy nooks and a giant Ponderosa pine tree growing in the center of the dining area. Aesthetics aside, hungry patrons flock the Pine Tavern for their hot scones and honey butter. After dinner, head east towards Bend’s subterranean restau-

rant, bar and venue, The Capitol, where bartenders mix tasty drink specials while the chef crafts small plates and dinners made from locally-sourced, organic ingredients.
End your evening with a whiskey, cigar, and the sounds of the Grateful Dead at O’Kanes pub, located in back of McMenamins Old St. Francis. Squeeze inside or sit outside beside one of their roaring fires. If you happen to find yourself on the first Friday of the month, simply wander the streets and check out the galleries for drinks, appetizers and local music at Bend’s First Friday Art Walk. Another option is to head toward the lit smokestacks of the Old Mill District. Spend some time at the shops, grab some Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, catch a movie, or take a class at REI. For those interested in some winter exercise, lace up your ice skates at the Simpson Pavilion.

NIGHTS IN THE WILDERNESS Adventurous souls looking to get in touch with their wild side should choose their sport—nordic skiing, snowshoeing or fatbiking—and head to one of Central Oregon’s more than a dozen backcountry shelters. One of the closest, Meissner Shelter at Virginia Meissner Sno-Park, has become a popular nighttime destination. If you’re tired of the bars on New Year’s Eve, snowshoe friends await with a fire and hot toddies (see this month’s Water & Woods department).
Most people don’t know just how beautiful the sky is at night. Our guests go out under the light of the stars or moon and it’s truly magical. -Dave Nissen
Nordic skiers should consider joining Meissner Nordic and watch for their annual Luminaria. Each February—depending upon weather and snowpack—our local ski non-profit lines a ski trail to Meissner Shelter with luminaries (candle-filled bags). Music—perhaps even carolers—greets the skiers as they line their skis into the groomed tracks. It’s easy to find the shelter, as a dozen bonfires are spread out in a 100-yard radius around the shelter as kids, young and old, congregate around them. For a more-organized outing, Central Oregon has several options. When Mother Nature cooperates, HooDoo Ski Area offers weekend night skiing at their Santiam Pass resort. Continuing their goal of “inspiring people with the natural world,” Wanderlust Tours hosts several nighttime outings, including the popular moonlight canoe and moonlight snowshoe trips. Their Bonfire on the Snow trip boasts a snowshoe trek to a hand-carved amphitheater, complete with talks of constellations, desserts from Sparrow Bakery and warm drinks made with Bend Distillery’s Hazelnut Vodka. “Most people don’t know just how beautiful the sky is at night,” says Wanderlust Tours Owner Dave Nissen. “Our guests go out under the light of the stars or moon and it’s truly magical.” If all else fails—or your time is limited—simply bundle up, head

Then it feels like a complete chiropractic adjustment as the bungee cord—no wider than the width of my arm—reaches the last of its elastic charm. And then it feels like being tossed back up as if I were pizza dough, only to get the chiropractic adjustment once more.

REMOVING OBSTACLES (CON TI N U ED)
SINGING AT AN OPEN MIC Performing in front of people was going to be tough. Almost jumping off a bridge tough. I’ve been a singer forever, yet was continually cautioned that the piano—a twelve-year investment in lessons—was my instrument and that singing solo was akin to “showing off.” And yet, I love, Love, LOVE to sing. There I am, on a stage with game seven of the World Series playing on a giant screen behind me and a few friends and a lot of strangers in front of me. I did it. I sang my heart out. And, I felt wonderful—a little nauseous—but wonderful. “Showing Off” obstacle removed. I still have a few more fears to check off my list, and the days ahead are bound to bring a few more unexpected challenges. Yet I can say that working through the obstacles life throws at you is far easier when you feel as though you can conquer the ones you’ve thrown at yourself.
MY NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS FOR 2017 I am planning a personal pilgrimage of sorts to include—but not limited to—a backpacking trip, a midnight swim in a beautiful mountain pool, and a celebration ceremony honoring the obliteration of self-imposed obstacles.
Self-imposed obstacles are the worst, and they cry out for resolution. Bend Lifestyle’s Donna Burklo

ORGANIZED ARTICLE DON LEE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
26
Bend Lifestyle | January 2017
Modern-day living has become increasingly more demanding as people get married later, work longer hours, and relocate more frequently. As a result, an organized, relaxing, and inspirational home has become even more important. The beauty to organization is there’s no wrong way to do it; it’s all centered on you and your unique lifestyle. Still, many people feel unorganized, needing clear guidelines and a course of action for arranging their homes. In an effort to provide that much-needed little push, here are some helpful hints on how to organize a home according to your lifestyle.
THE NEWLYWEDS Congratulations on tying the knot with your significant other and moving into your first home together. But, accompanying your marital bliss is a need to adjust to each other’s lifestyle and make a few compromises accordingly. The biggest bargain lies in the closet, with two different wardrobes merging together. The best way to go about organizing a newlywed closet is to separate the closet into dedicated His and Her sections. Try dark finishes—such as black or espresso—for men; while lighter colors and whites look the best for women. Also, consider each person’s belongings in the closet. For those weekend outdoor excursions, both the husband and wife will want to have enough hanging space for thick, long jackets and coats for when it gets a bit chilly. In addition, consider integrating a dedicated space for storing shoes such as flat and slanted shoe shelves where trainers and hiking boots can be located and accessed easily. For those newlyweds who are frequently out and about, a custom-designed mudroom is an invaluable asset, serving as the launch pad and unloading zone for the home. Mudrooms are able to store equipment conveniently—such as gloves, hydration packs, and skis—so couples can grab what they need and set off for adventure without wasting valuable time getting ready.

GET ORGANIZED (CON TI N U ED)
THE YOUNG FAMILIES Families with young children lead a more hectic lifestyle. First off, your children’s schoolwork should be priority number one; so, creating an organized work area is the perfect solution. Make sure your child’s desk has many built-in drawers with large shelves nearby. A filing system within the drawers helps keep backpacks clutter free. A Murphy bed, which folds up when not in use, is a fun and practical solution to creating a playroom without compromising bed space. You’ll also want to whip your pantry into shape, since it will be the go-to spot for a busy and hungry family. Categorize your foods into related items so it’s easy to see if anything needs to be restocked at a glance. Shelf dividers are also great for separating foods like canned foods from rice and pasta.
THE WORKAHOLICS If you’re one to bring your work home, you’ll want to organize with maximum productivity in mind, specifically in your home office. Keep in mind dark areas limit motivation, so make sure your work area is well lit. Depending on your work style, you should either organize to create enough floor space—for the occasional blood-flowing, back and forth pacing—or to have ease of access to necessary tools. A well-organized home office meets your specific work needs, and separates your work from your home life. For those hands-on handymen out there, adding a garage workstation with adequate cabinet space and slat wall for tools is sure to improve overall workflow. 28

THE MULTI-GENERATIONAL FAMILIES As you can guess, multi-generational families occupy more space so it’s important to maximize as much of it as possible, using properly-labeled containers as well as drawer and cabinet spaces. Hanging rods, counter space, and an area for baskets help transform a room where laundry is done into a highly-functional laundry room, ready to tackle a pile of dirty clothes after a camping or fly fishing trip. Just like the children’s rooms, a wall bed can be the ultimate space saver in a cramped home, creating additional space in a matter of seconds.
THE RETIREES With the retired life comes much needed rest and relaxation time and, in many cases, smaller spaces. Retirees who live the empty nester lifestyle have the choice of staying put or downsizing their living space. For the former, a pared-down, retiree lifestyle may not need much organizing, but a gorgeous dressing room may help indulge one’s desires and make them look their best. For those who choose to downsize, proper organization is of the most importance. In an effort to maximize the amount of usable real estate, retirees should look into wall units with multiple shelves, drawers, and cabinets to maximize the available vertical storage space. Wall units are also great for displaying years-worth of memories and mementos. ClosetFactory.com WallBedsOfOregon.com

The Benefits of Honey WORDS SIDNEY LEO
Honey has been around for thousands of years and has been used in almost every culture around the world. Many people use it to sweeten food and beverages, but did you know honey is one of the top superfoods used to treat countless health conditions and boost overall health? Honey contains 18 amino acids, and it has antioxidant and antibacterial properties that help fend off harmful pathogens. It can also be used to treat a wide-range of aliments such as healing wounds and burns, athlete’s foot, sore throats and even a hangover. Local honey taken for two months before allergy season can actually lessen allergies by helping your body grow accustomed to the pollen and immunizing your body against them.
Honey is great for your skin Did you know that raw organic honey is great for your skin too? Honey has natural antibacterial properties, so it is an effective acne treatment option, and it is loaded with antioxidants and enzymes, so it helps boost your skin’s immunity and fights free radicals to help slow down aging. Honey is also very moisturizing and helps eliminate dead skin cells. Try a honey mask with yogurt or fresh aloe for additional skin benefits. 34

Partners In Care values my work with veterans. “As a volunteer for Partners In Care, I specialize in working with veterans because I am one myself. Throughout my military career and after, I’ve seen a lot of suffering. So it’s easy for me to form a special bond with my patients because I understand them. We share our stories, we laugh, and I do what I can to make life more pleasant.” —Frank Partners In Care is proud to be a member of the national We Honor Veterans program. Call us. We care.
