MILL VIEW MEMORY CARE OPENS, NAMES EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Angel Hunter has been named Executive Director of the new Mill View Memory Care location at 1290 SW Silver Lake Blvd. The memory care facility, located near Bend’s Old Mill District, provides a supportive environment for those living with Alzheimer’s or Dementia. Hunter started with Mill View while it was still in the construction phase, but her experience with memory care began long before. In 2006, Angel decided Senior Care was her passion based on the fantastic relationship she shares with her own parents. Throughout her career in Senior Living, Angel has served as an activities director, business office manager and executive director. CENTRAL OREGON COLLECTIVE’S FRIGHTMORE MANOR Local nonprofit Central Oregon Collective has set the dates of their Halloween fundraiser for October 26 through 31, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The cost is $7 and children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. All proceeds from their annual Frightmore Manor at Central Oregon Collective haunted house go to benefit their cause of serving individuals with different abilities. Last year, C.O. Collective’s wheelchair accessible vehicles drove over 43,000 miles while assisting individuals looking to enjoy life to the fullest. Through their six homes and 24-unit supportive apartment complex, the local nonprofit supplies basic needs and extras,

As the youngest of six girls in our family, I was exposed early on to the world of fashion. Each one of my sisters has their own unique style with incredible taste in clothing and accessories. That was a great start! I, then, had the good fortune to later travel the world and hone my own sense of style. I modeled in lots of exotic places, managed various clothing stores and according to life-long friends, I've been dressing them forever! I think my styling background is just in my DNA. That's an easy question! We love to help women and men feel amazing about themselves. Because, when you feel great about how you look, it changes you from the outside in. Before Style IQ was born, I would pass people on the street and think to myself, “Gosh, if she/he would have only done this or that to their outfit they would look so much better!” For the longest time, I felt like I was just being judgmental until the day a friend asked me if I would sort through her closet with her and help dress her. I realized then that my motivation wasn't that I was being critical, but that I am driven to help people look their best—and that I was born to do this! That moment, and others like it, was my inspiration to start my personal stylist business, which I launched as Style IQ. We are passionate about showing people—on any budget—how to put their best self forward. I love that you don’t have to be rich or famous to dress well! Gwen and I are best friends. One of my best days ever was when my sister Gwen moved to Bend from Seattle nearly three years ago! We immediately knew that we would be in business together. Not only does Gwen have a keen eye for what works in fashion, she has an unbelievable sense of how to look at a closet, office or kitchen, take a person's lifestyle into consideration, and then arrange it all to make life work peacefully and with ease. So, it was a natural evolution for us to expand the personal styling business to include home organization and restyling your home with what you own. These days, when we start with a woman’s closet, we usually end up working with the husband's wardrobe— and now we even finish up with styling the whole house. —Barbara

Lori and Lisa Lubbesmeyer are not only sisters, they’re identical twins. The art studio and gallery—as well as online gallery—they started together houses their own artwork. Lisa and Lori draw their inspirations from the natural settings of Central Oregon, different types of music, travel and roads to distant places. When creating a painting, the twins use a layering process combining their former disciplines of oil painting and printmaking into beautiful, one of a kind pieces. ART BACKGROUND

Animosity and competition. While we were laser-focused on becoming professional artists, we viewed each other as our greatest competition. Suffice it to say, until then we didn't have enough understanding of who we were as individuals (rather than 'as the twins') to know we could be good artists without it detracting from the achievements of the other. On our 30th birthday, we decided we had better address the rift that had grown between us. That's the day we stopped being the painter and printmaker and began working in a new media, effectively starting our art studio business. —Lori

WORKING TOGETHER

There are a lot of things we love about working together, but one dynamic has stayed with us these 19 years. It's simultaneously our joy and difficulty. We know each other so well we instinctively know how to expand and grow ideas into fantastic results with very little communication. The other side of that familiarity is that we know the quickest and deepest way to push each other's buttons. Over the years, we've realized our most difficult times working together happens because we've made assumptions about each other. I have been an esthetician for 11 years, and Summer for 10. We both started out as massage therapists in our early 20's (we're now 40), and that led us to skin care, which is our ultimate passion. Summer went to massage school first, and then a year later I did. After about seven years doing massage, I went to esthetics school, and a year later, Summer did. We each went to different schools, and get a kick out of how our paths interconnected.

As the business end of our company, I majored in both business and international marketing. As the design arm of our business, Traci’s background includes a life-long passion for architecture, color, interior design and all things beautiful. fter a long plane ride, getting lost in New York City, and a five-day bus trip across the upper United States, Romanian Sanda Costello and a hometown friend finally made it to Bend, Oregon in the summer of 2005. As college exchange

students from a far away land, the high desert landscape was exciting and unexpected. Costello—now co-owner of Bowtie Catering Co.—quickly landed a job in hospitality and focused on learning English; first by studying the restaurant menus and then practicing with newfound friends. Costello solidified her Central Oregon residency by getting married and starting a family after two years in Bend. She found her true passion for food—and pie—in Shari’s Café’s corporate restaurant training program. “Growing up in Romania and traveling a lot through Europe with my new family, I ate a lot of different foods,” says Costello. “I’ve always been a foodie, just in a different way.” For the next ten years, Costello sharpened her skills as a server, bartender, caterer and restaurant manager. Time spent working in resort settings, pub atmospheres, and fine dining restaurants furthered her wine education. During this time, Costello was eating all types of different seafood and meats—such as elk, bison and gourmet sausages. Her palette expanded greatly and she couldn’t get enough.

s seniors get ready to finish their final year of high school, they’re also preparing to make major life decisions on where to go to college and what to choose as a major. On top of being busy students, these massive future changes can

become overwhelming. Luckily, Gary Whitley, Glenn Miller, and Pam Borgman—owners and operators of Cascade College Advisors (CCA)—are in the business of helping with these specific challenges. The team at CCA begin their work with each client by developing a trust-based relationship with the student and their families, while

providing information and tools for their individualized college search. All three CCA owners spent several years counseling students at the high school level, specifically on college entry, essay preparation, and the potentially difficult student loan process. CCA’s focus is to provide professional and outstanding customer service by making sure each student is comfortable with the decisions they make about when and where they apply to college.

As a former counselor at Bend Senior High School, Whitley mainly guided students through the college process. However, he was also responsible for supporting students who were homeless, providing mental health support for students struggling with anxiety and depression, and dealing with drug and alcohol situations. With over 400 students on his case load, giving individual attention to students was difficult. “Working as an independent educational consultant allows me to use my experience in working with students on the college search process and provides a wonderful opportunity, not only to continue to create and build those important relationships, but is also the best way to provide exceptional service to our clients, which is the goal of our business,” says Whitley.

UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS “We downplay the idea that students need to figure out their major prior to exploring and applying to college, primarily because most students on average change their major two or three times after they arrive to the college of their choice,” adds Miller. A major misconception is that college entry testing is the most important element of getting into a good school. While test scores are important, the student’s transcript and other elements—such as extra-curricular activities, clubs, and community service—are also looked at closely. Essay writing is also something that becomes a major challenge for many students. Borgman, the essay specialist at CCA, is a former Bend Senior High parent and helped establish Bend Senior High’s Future/Career Center. She works with students to create their own success stories as they grapple with the process of developing a competent college essay. “A young woman explained that she worked at a fast food restaurant after school and weekends and although she had other interests, she felt she could not develop an engaging or memorable essay,” explains Borgman. “Through a process of listing ‘passions' and ‘frustrations,’ she found her voice and composed a compellingly humorous essay based on her restaurant job and how people should treat one another.”

DUCK, BEAVER OR…? In Central Oregon alone, over 400 students each year are interested in transitioning into the four-year Oregon University systems. CCA clients are almost exclusively looking at four-year universities both in and out of state, however there are also those looking at what statewide two-year programs can offer them.
