DESCHUTES BREWERY TO OPEN IN VIRGINIA Local craft beer icon Deschutes Brewery has chosen Roanoke, Virginia to open its fourth facility. The $85 million facility— referred to as “Brew 4”—is expected to employ 108 people, according to a statement from Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe's office. Virginia lobbied extensively to host another location for the brewery—which began in 1988—beating out North Carolina and South Carolina. The state is providing a $3 million grant and more than $250,000 worth of funds available for Deschutes Brewery to use. With the Deschutes Brewery addition, Virginia is trying to pitch itself as a leader in craft beer. They are currently 15th in the country in craft breweries, while Oregon ranks fourth. The new brewery will sit on the eastern outskirts of the city, with views and access to Tinder Creek. Construction

A
kayak has a way of putting you in the middle of your dreams’ panoramic picture. With Bend’s abun-
dance of rivers and lakes just minutes away in every direction, it’s difficult not to want to spend some time on the water in a kayak—even if only for an afternoon. “There really isn’t any better way to experience nature than with the silent approach of a kayak,” says Grant Thompson, owner and operator of Tofino Expeditions. Thompson’s tours are exclusively conducted with kayaks as the main mode of transportation and are offered in exotic locations throughout the world. A recent addition to the Bend community, Thompson specifically chose our area to have an authentic place to call home when he returns from his world adventure tours. Being surrounded by local lakes and rivers sure didn’t hurt, nor does the easy access to air travel. “The flights offered from Redmond’s airport really made the move work,” Thompson reports, after measuring 125,000 miles on his air odometer last year alone. The word ‘authentic’ comes up often in a conversation with Thompson when discussing life, kayaking, tours in remote places, and creating and maintaining business relationships. CONTINUED >

The former art dealer got into the world of kayaking after having two major physical setbacks in life. On the mend from suffering a knee injury while ice climbing in Canada, he switched his adventure sport to kayaking after a chance meeting with New Zealander John Dowd, author of Sea Kayaking–A Manual for Long Distance Touring. The second setback came in the form of a major car accident that resulted in six months of recuperation and a forced absence from work. Having an epiphany, Thompson realized his life really needed to be about creating authentic kayak touring experiences and offering them to like-minded travelers. Because of his thorough research and resonant concern for the environment and people in each destination, he has been able to offer unique experiences for his small group tours. In Venice, the tour group spent the morning on a barrier island learning how to row a gondola before paddling through the city amongst the gondolas. Their instructor happened to be a champion Venetian style rower who competed in rowing for Italy in the 1964 Summer Olympics. On a trip to an Amazonian village, the home to one of his local guides, the group spent 18

time learning about local governance and touring a local school. One of the ways he experiences authenticity

interactions with those involved in our local beer culture. Thompson sees to it that this kind of food and drink experience is offered daily on his tours as well. “From servers to brewers to bartenders, there is a level of pride, enthusiasm and commitment that is distinctive and exceptional,” explains Thompson. This attention to detail and local culture garners high praise from Thompson’s clients. “Floating and listening, you hear and see everything,” explains four-time tour participants Phil Johnson and Peg Gerlock. “Sounds, smells, views; you are a true participant in the experience, not just a passenger.” After 28 years of providing quality, unique kayaking experiences in all parts of the world, Thompson is now enjoying the role of advisor, guide and partner to a like-minded business. A testament to his efforts lies in calls received from kayak guides around the world who are interested in attracting mindful clients like Thompson’s; those who will truly appreciate their surroundings. In fact, that’s how tours of Italy formed. An Italian guide hounded him for months via email in order to present him with a new tour to share with a wider audience. Thompson acquiesced and told the local guide to set a test itinerary. They took the tour together and it became Thompson’s popular Cinque Terra/Sardinia trip and grew into the four Italy tours now offered by Tofino Expeditions. “Come on the trips from a place of genuine interest,” Thompson encourages. Tours include 8 to 13 participants, last between 6 and 12 days and cost between $1,135 and $4,850. The hamlet of Port Orford lies about an hour’s drive north of Brookings. An economy built on the timber industry and thriving though commercial fishing, the community remains protective of the town’s historically-rich past. Port Orford also boasts a burgeoning artist scene, with eight galleries owned and operated by working artists. Happily absent are strip malls and the exacting hum of seasonal tourism. Rather, the town is proud of its working fishing port, home to 30 commercial boats. A thriving fly fishing economy also pours over to the nearby Smith, Rogue, Elk and Sixes Rivers. Because of the coastal geography surrounding Port Orford, there is no traditional dock from which to launch boats. Instead, one of only six “dolly” ports in the world makes its home there, providing the hypnotic and visually-pleasing pastime of simply watching the boats being lifted in and out of the water. For those traveling with bicycles, the 60-mile Wild Rivers Coast Scenic Bikeway—recently added to Oregon’s Scenic Bikeway system—starts in Port Orford. The Wild Rivers Bikeway pedals through old-growth forests, along wildly scenic coastal vistas, and ends at Cape Bianco State Park, just South of the windsurfing mecca of Floras Lake. CHARLESTON
Charleston is a small fishing community 15 minutes south of bustling Coos Bay. Located at the entrance to the large, eponymously-named Coos Bay, Charleston is a must visit for seafood lovers. Chuck’s Seafood, arguably one of Oregon’s best seafood retailers, sits on the main drag in Charleston. Try their house-smoked albacore tuna. A number of vacation rentals—overlooking the Bay or perched on the cliffside to the south of town— are available. RV travelers who love to fish and crab frequent Charleston for its easy bay access and the abundance of RV hot spots. This non-profit—which began in 1969 as a benefit for an alternative school—takes on a life of its own each July. The annual three-day festival draws festival-goers from across the country. Performers—musical and artistic—set up shop on the multiple stages or simply wander the grounds for attendees’ enjoyment. Jugglers, stilt walkers and girls with flowers in their hair provide the colorful backdrop to the natural landscape. The artificial flies are created by fastening hair, fur, or other materials to a hook. Each fish and locale require a different fly, depending upon what the fish eat. The fly is cast using a fly rod, reel and weighted line. As opposed to spin or bait fishing, the weight of the fly line caries the hook through the air and gently drops it on the water’s surface. With so many variations according to each environment, expert fly fishermen spend a lifetime honing their skills. “It’s important to master your casting, wading, and water reading skills,” says Phillips, who has guided hundreds of eager clients on the Lower Deschutes River. “Learn to present natural presentations to the fish, and to sight and stalk the fish.”

Tenkara Fishing Tenkara fishing is a streamlined approach to fly fishing. The practice—originating in Japan more than 200 years ago—uses only a rod, tenkara line and fly, foregoing the reel. The telescoping rod allows for easier travel with the gear and is a favorite for hikers who wish to carry some fly fishing gear in case the conditions call for it. 30

Old Mill Casting Course Situated along the Deschutes River and several ponds in the Old Mill District, the Old Mill Casting Course is one of the first fly-casting courses in the nation. The free course was designed to allow fishermen to practice casting skills in conditions similar to Central Oregon fishing spots. The Casting Course
Salmonfly Hatch Each May on the Lower Deschutes River two-inch long insects hatch, drawing schools of trout to the area. Probably the busiest time of the year for anglers, the Salmonfly hatch not only ensures large numbers of trout, but also allows for witnessing the metamorphosis of the insects. The Lower Deschutes—designated wild and scenic—is one of the few rivers that is home to both wild native trout and Steelhead.

S
ister city relationships are very much like the sibling relationship for which they’re named. They consist of a healthy dose of sibling rivalry paired with a constant undercurrent of support. Each of Bend’s three sister cities boasts similar physical features in mountains, rivers, and quaint downtown gathering spaces. They also each serve as the regional hub for governance, medical services, and tourism. And, they share frustrations regarding transportation, higher education, and managing growth. We have much to learn from Bend's sisters and many ways to offer support. Bend formed the first sister city relationship with Condega, Nicaragua in 2004. Since Nicaragua is the poorest of the Central American countries—think dirt floors and no running water—we might be more inclined to focus on the differences between us. Yet there are many similarities. The outlying areas rely on the city of Condega for services, it has a vibrant downtown, and the country enjoys beautiful surrounding landscapes. Thanks to the tireless help of three Bendites, Condegans know about Bend. Rick Negus is the force behind the Condega Project, a long-time effort to provide school uniforms, medicines, and educational opportunities for children. Mark Taylor, Bend Fire Department Deputy Chief of Training, built from scratch a fully-functioning fire department in the town, complete with two of Bend’s decommissioned fire trucks. You will find ‘Estacion Bomberos Voluntarios Capitan Mark Taylor’ (the firehouse) along the main highway. And Kathie Eckman, former Bend Mayor and Councilwoman, has taken on a library and medical equipment shipments. All three are members of the Bend Sister City Foundation and were also instrumental in providing water filters for hundreds of households in concert with Rotary International. “(I admire) the warmth of the (Condegan) people and the reminder of the value of a slower pace,” explains Eckman. “The town 32

is so cohesive. Sometimes I wish we could learn to be more like that.” Eckman believes these sister city relationships provide a better understanding of other cultures and an opportunity to learn from their best practices. Next in the birth order was Fujioka, Japan in 2009. The dedication included installations of one half of a split rock in each city. Look for our half in downtown Bend’s Breezeway. According to Bend City Recorder Robyn Christie, while this sister city relationship is less active due to a restructuring of their city government in Japan, there are still yearly student exchanges, one of which involves one student from each of Fujioka’s 27 middle schools. The baby of the family is Belluno, Italy, an official sister since 2012. Belluno, situated between Venice and the Dolomite Alps, might even be considered a twin sister. We share many common features, such as tourism, recreation, food, drink, struggles for higher education offerings, and a distinct lack of parking downtown. Our official plaque reads, ‘Bella Bend, Beautiful Belluno.’ It can be found in the Old Mill District across the street from the REI building. “There is a yearly student exchange, an exchange of culinary educators and students, a masters swimmer’s exchange, and even our sister city plaque was an exchange collaboration between architects and artists,” outlines Bend/Belluno Steering Committee member Kit Carmiencke. “Sister City relationships are based on community support and interest,” says Christie. “When the community pursues the relationships, that’s when they’re at their best.” BendSisterCityFoundation.org BendBelluno.org CondegaBomberos.com
