The HDFFA is a 501(c)3 non-profit serving Crook, Deschutes and Jefferson Counties. The organization’s mission is “to support a community-based food system in Central Oregon by increasing access to fresh healthy food, supporting sustainable farm land use and fostering relationships among farmers and consumers.” HDFFA.org

BOB BOYD RECEIVES THE BEND WESTLUND MEMORIAL AWARD Local historian Bob Boyd received the Ben Westlund Memorial Award from the Deschutes Cultural Coalition of the Oregon Cultural Trust October 12 at a ceremony hosted by the High Desert Museum. Boyd received $1,000 to allocate to the cultural organization of his choice. He awarded the funds to the acquisitions program at the Deschutes Historical Museum. “Ben was a passionate advocate for

ach year, I look forward to chopping down my own Christmas tree. Without fail, I wake up in the morning with a gigantic grin on my face, throw off the covers and pronounce, “Let’s get ready to go Christmas tree cutting!” While my family is small— just my husband and myself—my enthusiasm isn’t. There are no children jumping up and down, anticipating the excitement of an outdoor Christmas tree cutting experience, but the sentiment is every bit as dramatic as if the house was full of little kids. I fix a thermos of hot chocolate, make sure there’s a little Amaretto tucked away in the lunch bag, and collect all the necessities that will ensure our comfort for the day. We rev up the truck’s engine and off we go into the Central Oregon forest to hunt down a Douglas fir, or a White fir—our favorite types of trees to decorate. Central Oregonians find Douglas fir and White fir trees at higher elevations, so we head up Century Drive toward Mt. Bachelor. Fresh snow on the ground ensures everyone

else is up skiing. We park in a safe spot, grab our handsaw and cam straps and start trekking through the snow. We sink up to our hips in the white fluffy stuff but it doesn’t matter. The perfect tree awaits just 30 feet or so ahead of us. It’s beautiful—about nine feet in height with delineated branches and needles begging to be decorated. The handsaw is employed, and within minutes, we are dragging the tree back to the pickup. I simply cannot wait to get it into the house and place every ornament in the perfect spot. The concept of tradition takes on many forms during the Judeo-Christian holiday season. Holiday rituals need not be solely defined by religious activity, however. Cutting down our own Christmas tree is my little family’s own holiday custom. It behooves the soul to do something just for the sake of fun during the holidays and our do-it-yourself approach to Christmas tree hunting is something I look forward to every December.

I’ve collected ornaments from around the world and love to take my time, placing every memory on the branches. My annual Christmas gift to myself is reliving the story behind each trinket that goes on the tree. There are so many memories that go into our Christmas tree every year!

BEFORE YOU GO Permits are required to cut down a Christmas tree and can be purchased for just $5 at the Deschutes and Ochoco National Forest offices in Central Oregon, as well as at many local retailers. Once you obtain a permit, make sure you follow all instructions, including only cutting down trees in earmarked areas. Warm clothes, gloves, a sturdy handsaw and a way to secure the tree in the back of a truck or on top of a car are a must. Finding the perfect tree may involve walking off-trail, therefore, snowshoes or accessing the forest via cross-country skis should also be considered. FS.USDA.gov

he holidays bring an opportunity to deliver unexpected acts of kindness to family, friends, business associates or even total strangers. They are a time for gatherings—complete with eating, drinking, and of course, gifts! In turn, the celebratory season teaches us that gift giving is more fun than receiving. With that spirit in mind, local companies Twist Cocktail Catering Co. and Flip Flop Sounds have made a yearly tradition out of highlighting acts of kindness with their Cocktail Angels.

Around mid-December, look for these angels unexpectedly outside your doorstep, completely setup with their festive trailer filled with music, lights, snacks, cocktails and a whole lot of holiday cheer! The Cocktail Angels—made up of team members from Twist & Flip Flop—land in a parking lot and quickly setup a mini cocktail and dance party. Then, with wings, halos, tutus and smiles, they fly into homes and offices to lull people out of their humdrum day to enjoy an unexpected surprise. “Our mission is to simply spread joy,” says Twist Owner Stephanie Anderson Stroup, “It feels good to bring a surprising, unique gift to 26

people in the middle of their day. And, while we’re at it, we encourage others to pay the kindness forward.” Anderson Stroup further explains that after people receive the unexpected gift of the Cocktail Angels, they’re inspired to do something for others. “After a visit from the Cocktail Angels, we’ve seen our guests shovel their neighbor’s walk or buy a coffee for the stranger in line behind them. It’s all about passing it on,” says Anderson Stroup. Oftentimes, recipients of the Cocktail Angels ask to “Cocktail it Forward,” or send the Cocktail Angels off to surprise their own friends or colleagues. “To continue in the spirit of giving, we simply ask that those who want to ‘Cocktail It Forward,’ make a donation to their favorite nonprofit,” explains Flip Flop Sounds owner Courtney Latham, “It’s an easy win-win situation.” “My absolute favorite thing is to demonstrate appreciation,” says Kim Curley Reynolds, one of the original Cocktail Angels and parttime Twist staff member, “I love putting a smile on people’s faces.” Cocktail Angels started one snowy December day in 2011 when Curley and Stroup had an epiphany during lunch. They immediately abandoned their meals, filled their van with holiday lights and ice cold beer, and set our on their first mission. Flip Flop Sounds provides DJ and lighting services and Twist provides beverage catering services for public and private events in Central Oregon. Both companies feel very strongly about customer appreciation, charitable giving and giving back to the community. “We are grateful to Twist Cocktail Co. for raising support and awareness for the mission of The Bloom Project through the Holiday Cocktail Angel program,” says Heidi Berkman, founder of local nonprofit The Bloom Project. “Our friends and colleagues enjoyed the surprise of being recipients during a ‘meeting of the minds’ as well!” TwistCocktails.com

POMEGRANATE REINDEER: 2 oz CW Irwin Straight Bourbon Whiskey 1 oz pomegranate juice 1 T pomegranate seeds, plus more for garnish .75 oz fresh squeezed lime juice Ginger beer In a rocks glass, add bourbon, pomegranate juice and seeds, lime juice and honey. Add ice to fill and stir to combine. Garnish with additional pomegranate seeds and a lime wheel.

DASHING THROUGH THE SNOW: 1 oz Cascade Alchemy Chai Tea Vodka 1 oz Cascade Alchemy Vodka 1.5 oz cream .5 oz Vanilla Simple Syrup 1 oz Caramel Liqueur Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a martini glass. Top with whipped cream and a caramel drizzle.

ROSEMARY VANILLA DROPLET: 1.5 oz Rosemary-Infused Backdrop Vodka 1.5 oz Vanilla-Honey Simple Syrup 1.5 oz Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice Fresh rosemary sprigs In a shaker with ice, gently muddle a small sprig of rosemary. Add all ingredients and shake vigorously. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with a rosemary sprig. To infuse the vodka, add 2-3 sprigs of rosemary into a bottle of Backdrop Vodka and let sit for 3-5 days in a cool, dark place. For the vanilla simple syrup, combine 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup honey, 1 cup of water and 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract in a sauce pan and bring to a gentle boil. Remove from heat and cool and then refrigerate overnight.

live in a mountain town called Bend. In the winter, snow blankets our streets and turns our Cascade Mountains into majestic photo opportunities. People flock to our town to enjoy the slopes of Mount Bachelor or the wilderness backcountry terrain. At night, conversations center on the day’s escapades or the promise of tomorrow’s adventures. The only problem is, I don’t ski. It’s not like I’m avoiding the ski culture exclusively. I simply prefer not to partake in anything requiring specific clothing, secret handshakes, recited chants, certain postures, or a singular meeting place. I know I should be more reverent. Skiing—and a good ski season—is an important part of our local economy. I get it! I’ve skied in the past, but even then, I was a bit of a rebel. In eighth grade, jeans and a sweatshirt suited the outing just fine. Whatever rental Nordic skis they threw my way were perfect with me. When you don’t know the difference, you can be happy with anything! Since I’m a Bendite, however, people do try to include me in their conversations. But, when I am asked, “What kind of bindings do you have?” I respond, “It’s complicated. I’m bound by the responsibility to raise my child to be a good and respectful citizen. I feel bound to do the right thing mostly—like help little old ladies across the street and stuff.” They clarify, “No. For your skis? Tyrolia? You gonna get the M.A.X., the full season, the 12-day, the mid-week Winter, the 4-pack or just the Nordic?” Huh? I’ve taken to just smiling and saying “fer sure” now and then. I learned that from my former distinction, “non-surfer in a surf town,” while growing up. Let’s be specific about the issues. 1. The preparation is just too much. I’ll take the “lace up your shoes” or “throw on your sandals” kind of outdoor experiences. Luckily, we have those here, too—and in abundance. 2. It’s not the expense (it’s the expense). I could pass on the 22 lattes each week that equate to a season pass, new gear, and the like. But, then where would I get my caffeine? 3. My garage isn’t big enough. Seriously. Where do you put all that gear?! God forbid you decide to do both alpine and Nordic, especially if there’s more than one person living in your house. I want to assure you, however, I’ve been a good Bend parent. My son has had ski lessons and snowboard lessons. The exposure has been accomplished. He can make his own decisions as an adult. He decided not to ski. I love him. You die-hard skiers out there, I—and our economy—appreciate you. I even envy your passion a little. It’s a picturesque and idyllic scene, complete with shushing and après-ski activities. Yet, I’ll stick to my old jeans, some snow shoes and a path less traveled.
