LIFESTYLE LETTER

Welcome to Bellevue: Your World Class Travel Destination

July 2025 PUBLISHER

Doug Waterman | doug.waterman@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R

Ed Atlas | ed.atlas@citylifestyle.com

According to the travel titans, Nashville is among the more popular destinations in the world. For 2025, Tripadvisor ranks our little corner of the world as the sixth-best destination in the United States. Condé Nast Traveler has us among the Top 20 in the world. Of course, as last month’s CMA Fest underscores, we know what our calling card is. And though the lines aren’t as long as those on Lower Broad, we have a thriving music scene in Bellevue. But when the time came to prepare our annual Explore issue, we looked beyond the neon to something more serene. When most of us think of Bellevue, we think of life outside. We thought this would be a good month to remind our readers and neighbors that you should consider exploring our area’s waterways this summer. We started by checking in with our friend, Matt “Sunshine” Keller of Sunshine’s Adventures. No hyperbole: the experience of drifting along the Harpeth River for a few hours is unlike anything else in Middle Tennessee. Even if floating in a tube is not for you, do yourself a favor and visit Harpeth River State Park-Newsom’s Mill at 8729 Newsom Station Road. You’ll enjoy beautiful views of the Harpeth and explore the actual mill that produced the bricks that were used to build the Tennessee State Capitol building. You might even encounter a bachelorette party, like we did on the day we visited! Then there’s fishing. Maybe it’s your thing, maybe it’s not. But you can visit Chris Odum at Harpeth River Outfitters (580 Highway 70 in Pegram). If you’re a pro, he’s got more baits and lures than any of the big retailers. And if you’re new to the game, he can set you up for a relaxing afternoon for about the cost of a week’s worth of drive-through lunches. Finally, most of us do like to get away from time to time. Fortunately, Nashville International Airport now offers more than 100 nonstop destinations. One of the newest is a flight to Reykjavik, Iceland. Our intrepid reporter, Kellie Walton, recently visited the Land of Fire and Ice and she’s mapped out a nice itinerary for you. We hope you enjoy exploring all these stories in this month’s issue. Makenzie Bledsoe, a rising senior at Nashville Christian School, was the winner of the Bellevue Flag Project, an initiative spearheaded by ArtsBellevue, Bellevue Community Foundation, Exchange Club of Bellevue and BellevueHarpeth Chamber of Commerce to promote artistic and community engagement among area high school students. Bledsoe’s design is on permanent display at Nashville Public LibraryBellevue. She is pictured here along with Charlie Tygard and Mona Binda of Bellevue Community Foundation. Photography by Ed Atlas While traditional stretching methods attempt to make you more “flexible,” we work to adjust the stretch reflex. This way, the Stretch Zone Method gradually increases your active range of motion. Consider how a car seatbelt works. If pulled too quickly, the belt locks. If the belt is forced, you are just stretching the material itself, and that’s where injury happens. When a car seatbelt is pulled smoothly and controlled, the belt will fully extend. It’s the same with your body’s stretch reflex.

EXPLORE AND MAKE MEMORIES WITH SUNSHINE’S ADVENTURES ARTICLE BY LISA VALENTINE

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ED ATLAS

“Exploring, to me, is more than where you go physically,” says Matt “Sunshine” Keller. “It's what capacity you're willing to go [and] how far you're willing to push yourself on an adventure. How far are you able to take yourself?” For Keller, the Harpeth River is one of the greatest places to explore in Middle Tennessee and one of the best places to make deep connections and lasting memories. Growing up in a military family that frequently relocated, he’s never felt more at home than in the area around the Harpeth. “It's the place that I ended up sowing roots for the first time in my life,” he says. “Both my parents were in the service, and I saw multiple schools at least once a year. When I found Nashville, specifically the Harpeth River, and bought my house … I've been in this place longer than I've been in any place. I've spent almost half

of my life in this one place. It's where I've raised my three kids and all of our treasured memories have been created on the Harpeth.” Keller has turned his love for the river into his life’s mission. As the founder and owner of Sunshine’s Adventures (SA), Keller helps families, friends, and groups create their own lasting memories on the Harpeth. Sunshine’s Adventures offers kayaking, tubing, and paddleboarding throughout the summer. As long as the weather cooperates, SA will operate its river activities, as well as its campsite called “Driftwood,” until the end of September. “It’s a great place for groups to gather and create their next treasured memory in a private space that's secluded,” he says of Driftwood, a plot of land on the river in Pegram. “It's in nature, surrounded by old forests. for, say, just a bourbon and bonfire, or if you want to have a birthday party and have your kids have a water gun fight, or just go and take your family somewhere that's close by but feels far away and just get away from all the craziness that Nashville has become.” Driftwood also offers activities such as axe throwing and if you’re looking for a staycation it even has “The Captain’s Cabin,” a restored 2,000 square foot rental house. In a world driven by screens and technology, trading phones and computers for a few hours on the river with friends, family or colleagues is the perfect recipe for making true connections. “Usually people don't like to have their phones out around and in water, so that's a great start,” says Keller. “Because then you get that real engagement and human connection and contact. The river is different every day … there are things that can happen along the way that you get to, not endure so much, but to experience. Sometimes … things can get a little hectic and you’ve got to work together to battle adversity. So, it's just a great bonding experience that brings people together.”

Keller strives to help create experiences that will stay with people forever and become stories that are shared among families, friends and coworkers for years to come. “Being outdoors is creating treasured memories with people that you care about because there’s only one thing that people take for granted that's worth more than anything they'll ever have. And that's time,” he says. If you’re looking to create your own memories, be sure to book your summer river adventure in advance. Last-minute opportunities always become available, but with only a few weeks until the kids return to school, it’s best to book at least 3-4 days in advance to ensure a good river run before summer draws to a close. If you step off the plane in Iceland and feel like you’ve wandered onto the set of Interstellar or Star Wars, you’re not imagining things. The country’s eerie, ethereal beauty—vast black sand beaches, ancient lava fields, steamy geothermal pools, and jagged moun-

We checked into the lovely Exeter Hotel, which offered a modern welcome and placed us within walking distance of dining, nightlife, and the sea. With adrenaline overriding jet lag, we drove 20 minutes to Sky Lagoon. While Blue Lagoon gets most of the

“YOU DON’T NEED TO PLAN EVERY DETAIL TO HAVE THE TRIP OF A LIFETIME.” tains—has made it a favorite filming location for Hollywood epics. But it’s not a movie set. Iceland is very real, and now, it’s just a direct flight away. With IcelandAir’s new nonstop service from Nashville International Airport (BNA) to Keflavík International Airport (KEF), it’s easier than ever for Nashvillians to escape to this cinematic landscape. On a recent trip, I spent ample time researching and routing maps through the country to plan the perfect itinerary. And if I do say so myself, things worked pretty well. Though I went into my trip well-researched, all you really need is a rental car, a sense of adventure, and a willingness to veer slightly off the beaten path. Here’s how we made the most of every mile across the country’s southern coast.

DAY ONE: SKY LAGOON

After landing in Keflavík and breezing through car rental pickup (Europcar was quick and easy, with on-site service), we made the 45-minute drive into Reykjavik.

buzz, Sky Lagoon’s oceanfront infinity edge, newer facilities, and proximity to Reykjavik made it our top pick. We floated in geothermal waters, Icelandic drink in hand, and watched waves crash against the rocky shore. Later that night, we soaked up Reykjavik’s friendly pub culture, stopping into The Drunk Rabbit and The English Pub for a warm welcome via local brews.

DAY TWO: SNORKELING BETWEEN TECTONIC PLATES

We drove an hour east to Þingvellir National Park, part of Iceland’s famed Golden Circle. There, we booked a snorkeling tour through Dive. Is, which guides swimmers through the Silfra fissure—the only place in the world where you can snorkel directly between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Wrapped in dry suits and surrounded by crystal-clear glacial water, it was a bucket-list moment we won’t soon forget (and yes, it was very cold).

Kellie Walton with glacial ice at Diamond Beach, Iceland.

Next, we drove to the Geysir Geothermal Area and Gullfoss Waterfall, two iconic Golden Circle stops that show off Iceland’s natural drama. Our destination that night? A glass igloo in the small town of Hella. Surrounded by horses and far from city lights, the igloo offered the perfect stargazing setup.

DAY THREE: GLACIER LAGOON

This was our longest drive—about three and a half hours to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon—but it was well worth it. After suiting up in insulated gear, we joined a Zodiac boat tour to zigzag through the floating icebergs, some freshly carved from the nearby glacier. Seals swam past and perched on the ice, and we marveled at the icy world around us. A short walk from the lagoon brought us to Diamond Beach, where hunks of glacial ice wash ashore and sparkle like gems against the black volcanic sand. From there, we drove west to the seaside village of Vík and checked into Hótel Vík, a stylish stay tucked beneath misty mountains. We grabbed dinner at the charming Ströndin Pub and recharged for our final day.

DAY FOUR: ICE CAVES & VOLCANOES

After coffee and a stroll along Vík’s black sand beach, we booked a last-minute tour to Katla Ice Cave—and it turned out to be one of the most thrilling parts of the trip. Riding in a tank-like sprinter van, we learned about Iceland’s volcanic activity, glacier formations, and folklore, before hiking into an icy cavern formed by a volcano still simmering beneath.

“ICELAND IS FULL OF EXPERIENCES YOU CAN’T REPLICATE ANYWHERE ELSE.” The off-roading continued as we bounced across beaches and lava fields, a “Viking Aurora Hunt” Spotify playlist blasting in the background. On the way back to Reykjavik, we stopped at the dramatic Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls—both Instagram-famous for good reason. Along the way stands Hotel Ranga, one of the country’s most popular places to stay. While the well-appointed rooms and on-site restaurant and bar are natural draws, the hotel also offers travelers bookable tours and experiences like ATV adventures, snowmobiling, horseback riding, guided hikes, and paragliding. It’s a worthwhile place to stop off if you’re adding additional nights in Iceland. Our final night was spent in luxury at the Iceland Parliament Hotel. After a memorable meal of Icelandic specialties, including whale, at Geiri Smart, we toasted the trip with Paper Plane cocktails and a vow to return.

Harpeth River Outfitters CHRIS ODUM IS OUTFITTING AREA ANGLERS FOR THEIR NEXT GREAT FISHING EXPEDITION.

Chris Odom moved to Middle Tennessee before it became the trendy thing to do. As a recent college grad, he found work as an IT specialist and, in his spare time, found ample opportunity to indulge in his favorite pastime: fishing the area’s waterways. That changed in 2017 when corporate downsizing compelled him to turn his passion into his occupation. By 2020, what started as an online source for fishing gear became a brick-and-mortar store: Harpeth River Outfitters at 580 Highway 70 in Pegram. That’s where you’ll find Odom, a Kingston Springs resident, Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. We stopped by recently to learn more about the store and the best way to go fishing on the Harpeth.

BCLS: FIRST OF ALL, HOW DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN FISHING?

Odom: I grew up fishing Lake Hartwell (in upstate South Carolina) with my family, but it wasn’t until my wife’s grandfather’s introduced me to trout fishing in the mountains of Walhalla, South Carolina that I really fell in love with river fishing. I guess you could say that from that point on I was hooked on rivers. My opportunities to fish are few these days as I am here six days a week, but I still try to get out when I can.

FOR NOVICE OR INEXPERIENCED FISHERS, WHAT GEAR SHOULD THEY PURCHASE IN ORDER TO HAVE A GOOD EXPERIENCE THE FIRST TIME THEY GO OUT?

When choosing fishing equipment, I recommend considering what matters most to you: your budget, how often you’ll be fishing throughout the year, and your current skill level. For beginners or occasional anglers, a simple spincast setup with a handful of lures costs about $50 and will get you out on the water. While you can certainly invest more, around $200 will provide you with quality gear that’s reliable and will serve you well for many seasons to come.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO FISH DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS AND WHAT TYPE OF FISH CAN ONE EXPECT TO CATCH IN THE HARPETH RIVER?

I would say the best time to fish during the summer would be whenever you have a chance to go, but early morning and late evening are prime time to be on the water. The Harpeth has lots of different species of fish, but primally I focus on smallmouth bass.

WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF SHOPPING AT HARPETH RIVER OUTFITTERS OVER ONE OF THE BIG-BOX RETAILERS?

I talk with everyone that comes in the shop and I always find out if they are (looking for) anything special. Depending on the time of year, and if I’m asked, I’ll offer suggestions on which baits to use. There are over 50,000 products in the store, including swimbaits and an extensive selection of baits not found in most big-box stores. We have baits for more than just the Harpeth River. A lot of my customers fish Kentucky Lake, Percy Priest, Old Hickory, Dale Hollow and many other lakes throughout Tennessee.

“It’s not easy to keep up with everything new that enters the market. A lot of times my customers will mention a new brand or product that’s released. And because I trust their judgment, I’ll start carrying that particular item.”

I cater a lot to tournament anglers as well as those who don’t compete, but who fish a lot and know what they’re doing. I hear from a lot of customers that I have a better selection of lures that people actually want to fish with, including several Japanese brands. Those manufacturers have a reputation for producing high quality and innovative products. It’s not easy to keep up with everything new that enters the market. A lot of times my customers will mention a new brand or product that’s released. And because I trust their judgment, I’ll start carrying that particular item.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE TOP BRANDS AVAILABLE AT HARPETH RIVER OUTFITTERS?

Baits - 6th Sense, Strike King, Rapala, Megabass, Jackall, Deps, Berkley, Nikko, Keitech, Ima, Z-Man, Baitsanity, Hog Farmer; Rods – Lew’s, Shimano, Daiwa, Phenix, Dobyns, 6th Sense, Abu Garcia, Duckett; Reels – Lew’s, Shimano, Daiwa, Abu Garcia

WHAT DOES A GREAT DAY AT WORK LOOK LIKE?

Every day is a great day for me. I get to talk with people about fishing and swap stories about the ones that got away. HarpethRiverOutfitters.com

Instructions: In a large pitcher, combine the white wine, brandy (or rum), and elderflower liqueur. Stir gently to mix. Add the sliced strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, mint leaves, rosemary sprigs, and cucumber slices to the pitcher. Gently muddle the berries and herbs slightly to release their flavors. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld. Just before serving, add the sliced lime and sparkling water or club soda. Stir gently. Serve the sangria over ice, ensuring each glass gets a mix of fruit and herbs.

This cocktail balances the tartness of grapefruit, the sweetness of pear, and the distinct notes of rosemary, all brought together with a bubbly finish. Ingredients: • 2 oz Gin (or Vodka) • 1.5 oz Fresh Grapefruit Juice • 1 oz Pear Liqueur (or Pear Juice) • 0.75 oz Fresh Lime Juice • 1 sprig of Rosemary • Sparkling water • Garnish: Rosemary sprig, grapefruit slice, pear slice Instructions: Place the rosemary sprig in a cocktail shaker. Lightly muddle the rosemary to release its oils. Add the gin (or vodka), grapefruit juice, pear liqueur and lime juice to the shaker. Add ice. Shake well until thoroughly chilled. Strain the mixture into a chilled glass filled with ice. Top with sparkling water or Prosecco. Garnish with a rosemary sprig, a grapefruit slice, and a pear slice.

A Lime Mint Rose Mojito adds a floral twist to the classic mojito, creating a refreshing and elegant cocktail. Here’s a recipe that balances the traditional lime and mint with the delicate aroma of rose. Ingredients: • 10 fresh mint leaves • 1 lime, cut into wedges • 2 tablespoons white sugar (or simple syrup, to taste) • 2 ounces white rum • 1 ounce rose water (adjust to taste, as it can be potent) • Club soda or sparkling water • Garnish: Mint sprigs, lime wedges, edible rose petals (optional)
