The Perks Of The Job One of the benefits of working at Bellevue City Lifestyle is that we're always planning ahead. We start thinking about the Fourth of July around April Fool's Day. And for this month's Love Local issue, we spent a good portion of the holiday season getting to know some innovative chefs, crafters and collectors. That means we (and by "we" I mean "I") have plenty of ideas - and no excuses this year - for picking out some really creative gifts for Valentine's Day. MEET FLOUR A ND FORGE Some of Bellevue’s best pizza is ser ved out of a food truck once a week

You know when you meet a new neighbor or your nephew moves into their first home, and you’re tasked with searching for the perfect housewarming gift? A candle, a nice tea towel, or a toaster are classics, but one present changed the trajectory of Derek Walker’s life when he moved into a new California home in the 2010s: a magazine that featured dreamy backyard BBQs. “I was thumbing through it and they had a pizza oven idea for a backyard setup,” Derek shared. “So I built a pizza oven in my backyard, and we used to have parties at my house every single weekend for a whole year.”

Friends and neighbors would bring their favorite ingredients – from toppings to homemade sauces – to create different pizza concoctions each weekend. At the time, pizza became a hobby. “After a while, everybody was so blown away by what we were creating, it seemed like we wanted to start something where we could actually sell them,” Derek added. He connected with a friend who built a custom pizza trailer to recreate the backyard experience at other people’s homes. “It ended up being a huge hit, we were doing tons of birthdays and weddings. After the first year, we were so booked, it was incredible.” CONTINUED >

Derek had friends and family who lived in Tennessee, and he fell in love with the Nashville area while visiting. He loved the slower pace of life, the respectful residents, and the Southern hospitality. He worked to get a food truck built and made the cross-country move to the area in 2020. “It’s been a whirlwind tour ever since,” Derek shares. “We could not ask for a better customer base; there’s a whole community of people we see every week. It’s been an incredible experience.” The Flour and Forge truck is impressive in and of itself, built from a shipping container and measuring 26 feet in length. The wood-fired pizzas served vary greatly in taste and toppings to appease every palette. Not to be missed is the Velvet Revolver, named after the prolific rock band, that takes the cake (or, pie) for best seller. The delicacy begins with Flour and Forge’s marinara sauce topped with mozzarella, ricotta, pepperoni, and arugula, and finished with a hot honey drizzle. “It’s one of the best things I’ve ever eaten in my entire life,” Derek laughs. “And I eat a lot of pizzas.” Some of the menu staples are tried-and-true iterations from the days of backyard pizza parties, like the peanut sauce found on the Thai Chicken Pizza. The spicy base is then topped with cheese, chicken, mushrooms, and green onions. Without a brick-and-mortar location, you’ll have to jump at the opportunity to get a Flour and Forge pizza when the truck makes its way to Bellevue about once a week. Or, it can be booked for large events like weddings, birthday parties, corporate lunches, and more. There’s a form on the website for event inquiries, and the weekly truck locations are shared on their Instagram page, @flourandforge. “It’s really important for us to create a dynamic feel to everything we bring to the table,” Derek adds. “We try to take it to the next level.” FlourAndForge.com

Jane Kennedy spent more than 20 years working in oncology, but the importance of that role warranted a hobby just for fun. She started collecting antiques, a passion that would ultimately evolve into her second act career. Jane developed a particular affinity for collecting depression glass, those stunning translucent, colorful cups and pieces of serving ware often marked by beautiful imperfections. Additionally, she curated her own collection of vintage lamps and lampshades, many from a California-based designer who uses vintage fabrics and worn wedding dresses to craft her pieces. “What started out as a hobby for me once I retired became a new retirement career,” Jane says. “I had been a longtime dealer here in town, and there was an opportunity to purchase the mall.” The sizable space off Highway 70 was already an antique mall, where Jane was a vendor selling her own finds. When the owners were ready to retire, she jumped at the opportunity to start a small business, and 70 South Antiques was born. “I don’t know that I ever thought I would be a small business owner, but it turned out that it was a great opportunity,” Jane shares. “I was doing something that I had a passion for and loved for many, many years. It was a good fit.” Today, the antique mall features 45 vendors showcasing their carefully curated finds, which include everything from artwork to furniture, collectibles, home decor, handmade items, barware, jewelry, and more. “Because I would say we’re a medium size antique mall, it’s a luxury for me to have a wide direction of style, genre, and price points,” Jane shares, noting that

there’s something for everyone at 70 South Antiques. While the types of products available vary, there are a variety of styles available to shop as well. Think: mid-century modern, traditional, French, painted furniture, and more. Antiquing is a time-honored tradition for finding time-honored pieces, and it’s continuing to grow in popularity despite online shopping trends only increasing. It’s important to touch and feel when looking for the perfect new (though pre-loved) addition to your home, and when it comes to antiques, you never know where inspiration may strike. “The thing that we hear very often from customers coming in the store is, ‘Oh my gosh, my grandmother had that’ or ‘my mother had that,’” Jane shares. “The sense of having things that are handed down from generation to generation is becoming important again.” While Jane has lived in the Middle Tennessee area since the 1990s, taking over 70 South Antiques was her first entry into the Bellevue community, and it’s been smooth sailing ever since. “I really appreciate how supportive and welcoming the Bellevue community has been,” she adds. Jane also notes that getting into vintage collecting is often a low-cost hobby that allows you to learn as you go, one that led to becoming a small business owner after a career in healthcare. This May, Jane and the team at 70 South Antique Mall will celebrate their fifth anniversary. What began as a way to unwind from the rigors of work and raising a family has evolved into a second career for Jenn and Tim Ward. They’re the founders and makers at House Of Wards, a craft candle, jewelry, and woodworking business based out of their home on the edge of Bellevue. “Tim was taking special requests from friends for his woodworking products,” says Jenn. “And I have a candle-obsession. I know what I like so I started making my own and thought, ‘Why don’t I add them to what Tim is doing?’ And it works seamlessly.” They still have their day jobs. Jenn is director of product development at Tractor Supply Company, Tim is regional operations manager for an environmental engineering and consulting firm. But as Jenn says, “That’s from 9 to 5. House Of Wards is 6 to midnight.” The workshop is an escape for Tim who admits that, in the early going, it was difficult to put the items he created up for sale. “My favorite part of the entire process is putting the finishing touches on the product and seeing how it looks in the light,” he says. “I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve gone to Jenn and said, ‘Look at this!’ When I have a pretty piece of walnut and the grain is really striking, that’s what keeps me going.” CONTINUED >

“WHEN I HAVE A PRETTY PIECE OF WALNUT AND THE GRAIN IS REALLY STRIKING, THAT’S WHAT KEEPS ME GOING.” From colors and scents to finishes and packaging, the Wards create products that they use in their own home. They describe the aesthetic as “modern, masculine, woodsy and neutral.” And these days, the Ward children are getting in on the act as son Brennan and daughter June have their own candle line, called Lulubee, under the House Of Wards umbrella. “They were integral in the design, picked their own scents and they donate their proceeds to (charity),” says Jenn. House Of Wards products are authentic, locally-made and sourced gifts that residents and visitors will enjoy. nherently, music is a two-way street. Whether it’s for entertainment, spiritual, social, or recreational purposes, there’s something of value in it for the musician and the audience. The same can be said for music in a medical setting. And a Nashvillebased organization is spreading that message nationwide. “I understand that music actually helps people heal,” says Pete Griffin, president and CEO of Musicians On Call (MOC). “I’ve seen it firsthand with musicians playing in hospitals. There are people who are hurting and need it. We’ve played for victims of shootings and people in hospice care who were not expected to make it through the day. It motivates us to do as much as we can, as quickly as we can.”

Musicians On Call was founded in 1999 by two music industry professionals, Michael Solomon and Vivek Tiwary, shortly after both experienced the loss of loved ones. As a way to pay tribute, they enlisted musicians – including Bruce Springsteen and Wynton Marsalis - to come to the hospital to bring joy and to say thanks. Patients would come to the lobby to watch the performances, prompting caregivers to ask them to go room-to-room for patients who were unable to leave their beds. Public service has always been at Griffin’s core. He’s held executive roles with Big Brothers Big Sisters, veterans causes, and currently serves as a rescue diver and swift water rescue technician with Nashville’s Office of Emergency Management. He joined MOC as president and CEO in 2014 after nearly a decade in the music

industry, including a stint at MTV where he led the network’s Emmy-winning community service efforts. Since moving its headquarters to Nashville in 2015, Griffin has led MOC to where it has a presence in all 50 states and leads a team that has delivered music’s healing powers to more than 1 million patients, families and caregivers. “I’ve always felt that there’s a lot of opportunity to merge music and entertainment in philanthropy,” he says. “MOC tries to leverage the healing power of music to improve the lives of those who are experiencing some of life’s toughest challenges.” Dozens of celebrity musicians from every genre and demographic have volunteered with MOC. But it’s the legions of volunteer working-class musicians and non-musician guides who make the calls on a day-to-day basis. CONTINUED >

She says she knew the experience would be impactful for the patients but had no idea how it would affect her. “I had been in Nashville for a couple of years and was still trying to find my way as a musician,” says Harralson. “I heard about Musicians On Call and it helped me find my mission as an artist: to give healing music to those who need it most. It’s very gratifying and I try to volunteer at least once or twice a month.” Harralson says that there are always memorable and meaningful moments. “I went into a young male adult’s room and he was feeling kinda down and was fine with whatever I wanted to play,” she says. “So I played ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’ by Elvis Presley. He teared up and told me that earlier in the day he didn’t feel like he wanted to live anymore. But that song in that moment gave him hope for the future and he was ready to take on life again. Just a simple song can get people through a difficult time.” MOC is for non-musicians as well. Donald Phillips lives in the Bellevue area and has been a volunteer guide since

responding to an ad on social media seven years ago. “I’ve always worked in an in-patient hospital setting on the corporate side, but MOC is patient-centric and a way to give back,” he says. “And to be here in Nashville, it’s a fusion of two things that I love.” In his role, Phillips escorts the artist from room-to-room and drops in to ask if the patient would like to hear a song. “For compliance purposes, I’m actually certified as an official volunteer of the hospital. When I enter the room, the patient sees my hospital badge,” says Phillips. “I enter the room alone, tell the patient about MOC and ask if they want to hear a song. Then I’ll introduce the musician.” Phillips encourages anyone interested in volunteering to reach out to MOC. “If you have that calling to serve in a hospital or clinical space, you won’t regret your decision.” Musicians On Call is in a growth phase and is recruiting new volunteer musicians and guides.
