Painting With Style Points

Dear Bellevue Friends & Neighbors,

I hope this letter finds you in high spirits and full of creative energy.

Today, I want to take a moment to celebrate and explore the fascinating world of style. Style is not limited to the clothes we wear or the way we adorn ourselves; it encompasses every aspect of our lives. From the way we decorate our homes to the music we listen to, from the books we read to the way we carry ourselves in conversations, style permeates every facet of our existence. It is the thread that weaves together the tapestry of our lives.

Style is deeply personal. And it evolves as we celebrate our quirks, our passions, and our desires. Style is a form of self-expression that communicates who we are, how we perceive the world and what we value. In this way, style becomes a powerful tool for connection, as it enables us to find common ground with others who share our aesthetic sensibilities.

As individuals, we have the freedom to embrace established styles, blend them together, or forge entirely new paths, becoming trendsetters ourselves. We hope this issue inspires you to forge new paths or perhaps explore familiar ones. There is so much here in Bellevue to uplift our spirits, boost your productivity and ignite your creativity.

What I’ve found is that the best style is an authentic expression of who you really are. And that’s something no one on earth can duplicate.

THE STRETCH ZONE METHOD INCREASES YOUR RANGE OF MOTION GRADUALLY.

monthly

A round-up of exciting news from local businesses.

While traditional stretching methods attempt to make you more “flexible,” we work to adjust the stretch reflex. This way, the Stretch Zone Method® gradually increases your active range of motion.

Consider how a car seatbelt works. If pulled too quickly, the belt locks. If the belt is forced, you are just stretching the material itself, and that’s where injury happens. When a car seatbelt is pulled smoothly and controlled, the belt will fully extend. It’s the same with your body’s stretch reflex.

Nashville Fashion Students Design for a Cause

Belmont University fashion students are moving fashion forward with guidance from Bellevue resident, Jamie Atlas

While Nashville may be best known for its music, the city is emerging as a player in the fashion world.

“I classify Nashville as a creative economy,” says Jamie Atlas, Fashion Chair at Belmont University's O'More College of Architecture and Design. “What you have here are a lot of independent fashion businesses. It’s very artisan driven and becoming a hub for jewelry design, leather goods, and footwear design. Large companies like Genesco and Nisolo, as well as smaller brands, have been headquartered here for years. Now, it’s the independent fashion brands that are moving to Nashville.”

As the department chair for over 20 years, Atlas also serves as the producer of the O’More Fashion Show. Her background in fashion merchandising includes experience with specialty and department store chains

to direct sales and e-commerce. She’s worked for numerous brands, including Nashvillebased Johnston & Murphy.

“I was ready to make a change and I thought it would be great to start sharing my knowledge with others,” says Atlas, who has lived in the Bellevue area for 25 years. “It’s nice sharing what I’ve learned, and I’m constantly learning more because the fashion industry changes so much.” She transitioned to teaching at O’More College and continued after the college merged with Belmont University in 2018.

Belmont/O’More offers a unique fashion program in that students can choose from a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Fashion Design or Merchandising, preparing them for a variety of career options in the fashion world. With opportunities to study in fashion CONTINUED

cities, such as London, Florence, Helsinki, New York City, and Los Angeles, the university is helping to create the next generation of fashion industry leaders.

Each year the senior fashion students showcase their best work, from design to execution, in an annual fashion show, that may also include jewelry, hats, or handbags that complete the outfits.

“Our annual show is a culmination of their strongest work,” explains Atlas. “Seniors take the skills they’ve learned, from patterning to construction to draping to technology and let their creative juices flow.”

In addition to showcasing seniors, the junior design students are challenged to identify a need in the fashion world that is not being met, and create a solution for it. Over the years, students have designed clothes for individuals with Parkinson’s and Lou Gehrig’s disease, featuring magnetic closures or clasps that make them easier to get on and off, as well as designs for those with autism or Down syndrome, who may have tactile and sensory issues.

For the past two years O’More has partnered with Daybreak Arts, a nonprofit founded by Belmont alum Nicole Minyard.

“It gives people who are affected by housing insecurity a place to go to work on their art and, hopefully, develop it to the point that it can sustain a living for them,” says Atlas.

O’More students designed mini collections inspired by Daybreak artists’ creations. Audiences were able to view artist galleries and purchase work through a QR code at the show.

“The goal is for the audience to learn about Daybreak Arts in a new and fun way and to help raise awareness and funds for the organization,” says Atlas.

“It’s our partnerships with nonprofits that really make an impact and make this a ‘show with purpose.’ It’s not just designing clothes; it’s very purposeful for the student designers and the people who are having something designed for them. Those are the projects our students and alums still talk about. They’re justifiably proud of their collections and other things that we do, but when there’s a purpose behind involved, it becomes more meaningful.”

For the “Haint” of Heart

Not long ago, Maggie Kuyper was presented with an unusual challenge. It wasn’t just to paint a house; it was to create a therapeutic ambience so that a family could gather and relax with its ailing matriarch as she recovered from cancer treatment.

It wasn’t as easy as applying a few coats of color.

“The entire house was being refreshed and paint was just one aspect of the project,” says Kuyper, owner of Harpeth Painting. “There was old carpet and the original, outdated paint scheme. The

house hadn’t been touched since it was built in the 1980s. It was like walking into a time capsule.”

Once the color palette was selected, it was up to Kuyper and her team to bring the walls to life.

“What we typically do is come in and start looking at nuances,” says Kuyper. “Older homes have unique architectural lines, with unusual angles and divots. You have to know where one color stops and another begins. Then you have to strike the right tone, so there can be a lot of tweaking involved.”

WHEN HIRED TO DO AN UNUSUAL PAINT PROJECT, MAGGIE KUYPER DID SOMETHING UNUSUAL.

The living room ceiling was the most notable interior feature. For that Kuyper and her team used Haint Blue. “That’s an old Southern tradition from the Charleston area that some say keeps the spirits away,” says Kuyper. “Typically, you’ll find it on porch ceilings. It was unique to bring it inside.”

Lighter tones applied to the exterior, mimic, without embracing, the trend of white brick houses that are appearing throughout Nashville. But Kuyper says there is a noticeable difference.

“We chose a non-white color, more of a classic gray,” says Kuyper. “It’s still bright and light, but it’s not stark like white brick.

“Knowing how to properly paint brick is a skill that not everyone can master,” says Kuyper. “When done properly, it’s not high maintenance.”

Growing with the neighborhood

From a tiny school room to a freestanding structure, Stephens Valley Church mirrors Bellevue’s Growth

From its perch on a gentle rise overlooking the land and neighborhood from which it draws its name, Stephens Valley Church (SVC) provides an inviting and inspiring space where people can reconnect with what matters most.

That means serving the spiritual needs of a congregation that has grown from a few dozen gathered in a school room to nearly 450 members convening in a brand-new building in Bellevue’s newest neighborhood.

“We wanted to grow and expand our ministry and couldn't do that in a school room," says Senior

Pastor Jim Bachmann. “We looked at several locations and saw potential for that here, where we had an existing relationship with a developer. Then, one thing led to another.”

The church that eventually became SVC met for the first time in November 2016 in a Brentwood hotel meeting room under the name of Westminster Chapel. In 2017 it relocated to the aforementioned school room at Julia Green Elementary in Green Hills where it remained until moving to its current location at 6000 Pasquo Rd.

Senior Pastor Jim Bachmann and David Jones

Once the church’s building committee, headed by David Jones, settled on the parcel of land in Stephens Valley, the call went out to raise funds to secure the location. The congregation stepped up in a big way, raising $1.4 million in a matter of weeks.

“We see our church as growing with Bellevue,” says Jones. “Everything is happening here with good, positive growth.

“Stephens Valley is in our name because we want to be seen as a good neighbor and part of the community. There are a lot of young families and kids here. That’s part of what drove us. We wanted to be accessible to them.”

The first service was held in the new location in early March 2020, just two weeks before the onset of the pandemic. But SVC’s sphere of influence grew during the ensuing weeks and months. Perhaps it was coincidence. Or maybe something greater intervened.

“It was a terrible time for everyone as many people died while others lived in fear,” says Bachmann. “But people were able to visit churches remotely. In some ways the ministry of the church expanded through streaming.

“It was strange, preaching to a camera. But I learned, after the fact, that people discovered Stephens Valley Church on YouTube. In one sense, God closed us down and in another he opened us up. God is always at work, and He brought something good out of something bad.”

SVC is a non-denominational church, driven by the gospel. While its mission is to grow – SVC recently welcomed 14 new members – Bachmann understands that it’s not necessarily for everyone. “We’ll take

any new member that wants to come but we don’t want to take people from other churches where they’re happy and being fulfilled spiritually,” he says.

“Churches are changing these days and there are people searching for a more conservative theology,” says Bachmann. “Our worship services are liturgical and lively, traditional and fresh. We are blessed to have a great choir with monthly accompaniment from brass and string ensembles. The choir performs at least two annual concerts – one with a patriotic theme, the other for Christmas – to overflow crowds.”

The life of Stephens Valley Church is grounded in its worship services. In addition, there are a variety of social and study opportunities available. Wednesday night dinners feature food and fellowship. Parents Day Out allows working parents to drop off their children at the church for a morning of Christian-inspired activities. Bible study sessions for men and women are scheduled throughout the week and Bachmann teaches a class for new members.

“The hub of our wheel, the energy behind what we do, is to preach and teach the word of God,” says Bachmann. “We minister to people the same way, whether they’re just getting into the batter’s box or rounding third because, frankly, all of us are just scratching the surface.”

Currently all worship services take place in the Fellowship Hall, but longer-term plans call for the addition of a dedicated sanctuary along with a youth and children’s center.

Until then, Stephens Valley Church will continue to serve the spiritual needs of its active members while being a good neighbor to the surrounding community.

Fall’s TRENDING Hairstyles

While Amanda Craig-Borski may be the owner of the top Bellevue salon Leigh Edwards & Company (LE&C), she operates her salon under a philosophy that transcends standard teamwork. Her motto? “Build a team so strong no one knows who the boss is.”

After leading a whirlwind life as a stylist on country tours for everyone from Reba to George Strait to Kelly Clarkson, doing hair for Blake Shelton on the hit TV show The Voice, and even keeping NFL stars Tim Tebow and Jay Cutler looking sharp, Craig-Borski felt the pull to plant her roots in the Nashville community, open her own salon, and champion a team of experts. After establishing her flagship salon on White Bridge Road in 2015, she opened the second LE&C location in Bellevue upon seeing the immense growth in the area. Next month the Bellevue salon will be moving from its current Highway 70 location on October 3 to a new home in One Bellevue Place.

Embracing What Makes You Feel Best This Season

Amanda Craig-Borski

Her team’s years of experience and expertise, covering an array of specialties, make them one of the top salons in Bellevue, if not Nashville. Whether it’s an intricate cut, a perfectly placed color, or changing up a look completely with a perm or extensions, the LE&C team can do it all.

Stylist Steven Lhamon is known as the salon’s “curly guru” since he’s incredible at handling all types of curls. Ashley Hammer, Mary Beth Jones, Victoria Moser and Olivia Antonino are pros at bringing clients’ blonde dreams to life, and for those looking to go a little wild and try something completely different with color, stylist Brianna Hamer has you covered. “Brianna is a total boss and is amazing at blondes and cutting, but if you want rainbow hair, she will make that happen,” says Craig-Borski.

This team of experts has seen specific trends emerging for the fall season, but they truly encourage clients to find what makes them feel best.

“Honestly, I feel like we are embracing what makes you feel good, what you enjoy, what makes you feel the most comfortable in your own skin, which is exciting because then we can find the perfect trend for you,” explains Craig-Borski.

“The trend to me is what makes you feel the most beautiful and if having long hair makes you feel the most beautiful, then let’s put some extensions in,” she says. Due to their popularity, the salon will introduce its own extension line soon. Moser and Jones are LE&C's go-to tandem for extensions.

LE&C stylist Seventy Jane is a master of Cali Beach Waves, which Craig-Borski dubs the “new-age perm” for those that love their hair in a “wild, beachy wave kind of look.”

When it comes to lower maintenance styles, straight hair is making a comeback. “It’s exciting to see someone who has really great hair be able to rock out a really cool straight look and show off a haircut,” she says as straight hair allows a stylist, such as their cutting specialists Katie Davis and Karesten Porter, show off their talent.

“I really don’t ever see the lived-in look leaving because once you get your hair—the canvas—to the right spot, it’s a very inexpensive color to wear,” explains Craig-Borski. Vivid colors such as bright blondes and reds, along with hair that is so dark it almost has a blue tint are popular right now, but the upkeep is a more substantial financial investment compared to the “lived-in look.”

LE&C’s Jessica McCormick, Raistlin Pennell and Hammer are the experts when it comes to men’s cuts. “They’re seeing both clipper cutting and embracing that longer look,” shares Craig-Borski. “Now men, even if they’re in corporate America, they don’t have to cut all their hair off, which is exciting for them. They can have a longer look. I call it the ‘Bradley Cooper.’ All the men want the 'Bradley Cooper.’”

“We are living in a very casual vibes moment,” she says of present-day style and fashion. “However, if your hair and your makeup are on point, it doesn’t matter what your wardrobe looks like. I think that hair is an added bonus to you. It doesn’t change who you are as a person by any means, but it does change your vibe.”

THE little BLACK DRESS

Most of us can say we have that one staple black dress that can be worn at any occasion, and the classic look is not only popular but is elegant and timeless. It is the dress in our closet that can be accessorized to fit the event and often is the dress we go back to time and again. It is one of the most versatile items we own, never goes out of style and looks good on anyone. But how did this classic look originate?

Prior to the 1920’s, black was reserved for funeral wear, but when Coco Channel made the bold move to print a short, black dress on the cover of Vogue in 1926, all of that changed. The popularity of the black dress skyrocketed, and it became one of the most influential pieces of clothing. Chanel transported fashion from tight corsets and bustles to straightlined silhouettes. Because of its affordability, black remained a popular choice during The Great Depression. The black dress had another boom in popularity when “Breakfast at Tiffany’s’’ debuted, and Audrey Hepburn showcased her iconic black dress with long, black gloves. Today, people accessorize the black dress to fit any occasion.

We enlisted the help of stylist, Amani Skalacki, to show us how versatile the little black dress can be.

COCO CHANNEL MADE THE BOLD MOVE TO PRINT A SHORT, BLACK DRESS ON THE COVER OF VOGUE IN 1926

“We usually think of the little black dress as a piece you wear to an event. However, because black is so flattering on all body types and skin tones, women have multiple black dresses from casual to evening,” Amani says. “I selected this collection of dresses to show the versatility of the black dress and to give women some new ideas of how to wear the evening gown with a train on a night out with her girlfriends or the traditional summer strappy maxi dress while running errands in cooler temperatures.”

Although black is a timeless, classic look, that doesn’t mean it goes without personality. You can make it your own style by accessorizing to infuse new life into a dress that you already own.

“A sequin dress can be dressed up with heels, or that same dress can be transformed into a casual outfit with the addition of tennis shoes and an oversized blazer or a denim jacket. Transform that strappy dress you have been wearing all summer into an outfit that is perfect for chilly fall temperatures. Add a narrow scarf, a leather jacket and sandals or a tall pointy boot, and you have a whole new look for an evening out,” Amani adds.

If you have a dress in the back of your closet that you haven’t worn in years, don’t be afraid to dust it off and give it new life. “Take that evening gown you wore years ago to a tailor for a little transformation. Turn it into a high low dress-top that can be worn out with girlfriends or on a date night. Pair the top with leather leggings, ankle boots, a chunky belt and some statement jewelry, and now you have a piece that pushes the boundaries of the little black dress.”

Are you looking for the best cut or style of dress that works best for your body type? Amani provided this simple guide:

“Sydney made her sessions with my son a fun experience for him so he didn’t think of it as work, but as his fun time with Mrs. Sydney. He has an articulation and phonology delay that she was able to get him completely caught up. What was also amazing is she came to our house! I highly recommend Sydney! She is very professional and does an excellent job working with children.”

Customize Your Home’s Style

O’REILLY’S AMISH FURNITURE LET’S CUSTOMERS CREATE THE FURNITURE OF THEIR DREAMS

Have you ever searched online for a piece of furniture but can't find exactly what you're looking for?

Imagine being able to customize a piece that perfectly matches your style and space.

Because furniture is so personal, “It’s very hard to buy online when you’re talking about a major purchase,” says Stephanie O’Reilly Stricker. “Furniture is something that people want to touch, to see the grain in the wood, and to open the drawers.”

Stephanie works alongside her father, Gary O’Reilly, at their family business, O’Reilly’s Amish Furniture, where they bring customers’ visions to life.

Gary entered the furniture business in the Chicago suburbs in 1972. Wanting to be near his grandchildren, he relocated to Nashville, where he opened the store at 8223 Highway 100 in Bellevue on January 1, 2020. O’Reilly’s features merchandise that is sourced from 70 different Amish builders from Ohio and Indiana.

From midcentury modern and transitional, to urban and mixed media styles, O’Reilly’s offers complete customization of the look, feel, and size of furniture, even building it specifically to fit a space, down to a quarter of an inch.

Customers can select the wood type, finish, hardware, bases, edging and more. There are even opportunities to mix-and-match in stock inventory to fit exact styles. O’Reilly’s carries entertainment centers, bookcases, bedroom sets, dining tables, chairs, desks, end tables, sofas, and just about any other piece of furniture a customer can think of. Production time for custom furniture takes about 4-12 weeks.

“Bottom line is, we do what no other furniture store can do,” says Gary. “We’re the biggest store in town that’s entirely American made and I’m very proud of that. It’s the way to buy furniture. I always tell people ‘It’s your money, why would you settle for what you didn’t want?”
