The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is upon us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflect that best. For several years now my family has enjoyed Bellevue holiday traditions like skating at the Downtown Ice Rink, watching the Snowflake Lane parade, and shopping for gifts at the Bellevue Collection. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what Bellevue has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We’ve compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier and that also supports our local businesses. We also wanted to share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy and love. Happy Holidays!

I participated in sixteen seasons of New York Fashion Week, and had my work featured on the covers of magazines such as Elle Man, Esquire, L’Officiel Homme, Amazing Magazine, as well as within the pages of Vogue, GQ , Flaunt, and Paper Magazine. After a decade of working in fashion, I left NYC and moved to Los Angeles to work in entertainment. There I styled hair for music videos, commercials, celebrity appearances, and print advertisements for beauty and fashion campaigns.

WHAT TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING RIGHT NOW IN HAIRCUTS AND COLOR? The trends that I am seeing right now for cuts are modern blunt bobs, flowy layers, cheekbone skimming facial framing and curtain bangs, and big beautiful 90’s blowouts. I am not a colorist, but the trends that I am seeing are elegant warm tones, as well as bold statement shades.

CAN YOU GIVE OUR READERS ANY HAIR STYLING ADVICE FOR PARTIES OR SPECIAL OCCASIONS? For all the holiday parties this year, some styling advice is to take it slow and keep it simple. Focus on one thing, maybe it’s a sleek low chignon with a statement pin or a side part, or a pony with a little rhinestone bobby pin to wrap the base. If wearing it down, a loose flowy wave finished with a little wave spray for some separation (R&Co Bleu Wave Spray), possibly tucking one side behind the ear. Adding a sparkly hair accessory will always add a little holiday flair- think diamond bobby pin, a pin with a pearl, or a metal shiny pin for twists and buns.

For many people, it is so confusing as to how to spell this holiday, celebrated by Jewish families sometime in December! The truth: There is no “correct” English spelling! They are ALL acceptable. The Hebrew is simple: hnkh. So, what is this holiday with unclear spelling? It is a celebration of historical events that occurred in 164 BCE (Before the Common Era, equivalent to BC). At that time, the Jewish people were religiously oppressed by Syrian Greeks. The Jewish people revolted, recaptured the Temple in Jerusalem, and rededicated it. That rededication ceremony lasted eight days. In remembrance, Jewish families light a “chanukiah,” an eight-branched candelabra, adding one candle for each of the eight days. With tongue-in-cheek, it is the manifestation of every Jewish holiday: “They tried to kill us. They didn’t succeed. Let’s eat!”

And that is what Chanukah is all about. It is a celebration of the first recorded fight for religious freedom. It is observed with three major traditions: lighting the chanukiah each night, giving gifts, and eating latkes (potato pancakes). Why light the chanukiah? Besides the explanation above, there is a “myth” that when the Jewish people went to rededicate the Temple in Jerusalem, there was only enough sanctified oil to keep the Eternal Light burning for one day. A miracle occurred that kept the light burning for eight days until more oil could be found. Why give gifts? One of the first things the Jewish people did, after establishing an independent Jewish country in 166 BCE was to mint coins – to establish a currency. In memory of that, gifts (in earlier days, coins) were given to children. Why latkes? They are cooked in oil, reminding Jewish people of the “miracle” of the oil lasting for eight days. In Israel, the tradition is to eat jelly donuts instead of potato pancakes, also cooked in oil! So…no matter how it is spelled, Chanukah is a celebration we can all embrace: That each of us should be able to observe our religious beliefs however we wish. That is definitely worth celebrating!

When the COVID-19 lockdown began, Jubilee REACH knew that the most vulnerable families in the Bellevue area would need support. In March of 2020, Jubilee REACH’s Groceries for Families program began providing families with food and essential items. During the height of the pandemic, Jubilee REACH’s Groceries for Families program served 700 families and continues to serve over 300 families today. Groceries for Families has provided for immediate support, but created lasting relationships between the families and Jubilee REACH.

HOW BEST CAN COMMUNITY MEMBERS SUPPORT THE ORGANIZATION? There are many ways the community can get involved. The first way is to volunteer with us! We have volunteer opportunities for everyone whether it be at the Jubilee REACH Thrift Store in Bellevue, the work happening in the Bellevue School District Schools, the various programs at our center, and our community-building events. THE PASTORS OF HOLY SPIRIT LUTHERAN CHURCH REFLECT ON THE WEEKS LEADING UP TO CHRISTMAS. In our Lutheran tradition, Christmas is preceded by four weeks of Advent. Amid sales, shopping, decorating, parties, and presents, Advent calls us to remember an ancient story born in simplicity: a small family, living at the edge of poverty, and a child born far away from home. Light is the central symbol of Advent. Each week of the Advent season we light one more candle, so that as the days around us grow darker and the nights longer, we remember the power of even the smallest light. Sometimes we say that light is a form of resistance that shadows cannot overcome. And yet darkness has its own gifts too: silence, rest, peace. Nothing can be born without darkness. No one really knows when Jesus was born. It probably wasn’t in December, since shepherds would not have been

“abiding in the fields by night” at that time of year. But early Christians in the West, looking for a time when celebration was needed, settled on a time when many of us search for hope and joy: the deepening days of winter. When better to deck the halls, show extra generosity, light more candles, than the coldest days of our year? As Christians, Jesus’ birth invites us to pay attention to all those on the edges of our world. Amid all the fun and celebrations of a holiday season, Advent invites us to remember the power of small things, everyday kindnesses, generosity that lasts. With friends, family, and community of every faith and human tradition, may something new be born of the darkness this December: a will for peace, a light of hope, a true love for our neighbors. No gift would be greater.

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”

Bending the Arc

College freshman Amirah Haque is committed to being an active member of her community. A Bellevue native who attended Bellevue High School, she played soccer (her team won state her senior year) and softball there, tried cheer her senior year, enjoyed Hiking Club (“A fun time with friends to go on hikes and clean up trash”) and “Bending the Arc, my favorite club ever!” Of course that club’s name is a nod to MLK’s famous quote, “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” The club worked with the Common Power organization to help BHS students pre-register to vote.

She spent time volunteering at Food Lifeline, the City of Bellevue Communities of Color coordinating committee, and attended City Hall meetings in support of the CARES Unit. She’s now at Pitsor where she plays soccer as well and continues to agitate for positive changes toward equity and equality. Haque developed an interest in social justice in middle school, and credits her mom and aunt as role models in that arena. She mentions that social justice work can be a job or a passion, and she’s interested in pursuing law that affects government policy. No matter which field she ends up in, Haque will be an activist in the realm of social justice, working to make the world a better place.
