There’s much to love about Tennessee including our incredible river ecosystems. The river systems of the Southeast are among the most biodiverse in the world, behind only the Amazon River in South America and the Mekong River in Southeast Asia. These rivers are not only a source of pride but a lifeline for all who call Tennessee home, providing clean drinking water and safe recreational opportunities. Protecting these waterways and the habitats they support is critical to ensuring a viable and vibrant future for all Tennesseans. The rivers of Tennessee, including the Harpeth River that flows through Bellevue, teem with life. The Duck River is North America’s most biologically diverse freshwater river, containing more species of fish than all the rivers of Europe combined. It also supports 60 freshwater mussel species and 22 species of aquatic snails, many of which are federally listed as threatened or endangered.

Even the smaller streams in our state contain endangered species that exist nowhere else on earth, like the Nashville crayfish, that makes its home in Southeast Nashville’s Mill Creek. The ecosystems that flourish along the riverbanks provide nesting grounds, feeding areas, and shelter for a variety of species, including native pollinators and birds, contributing to the tapestry of life that defines Tennessee's natural heritage. If mussels and snails aren’t your thing, the economic impact of Tennessee’s incredible rivers can help frame their value. Recreational fishing across our state supports almost 8,000 jobs and generates over $60 million in revenue. Rivers are the primary feature of many Tennessee National Parks, which bring $2.11 billion to the state economy through tourism. Beyond their ecological and economic significance, over 60 percent of Tennesseans rely on the state’s rivers as a source of clean and safe drinking water. To restore and protect Tennessee's rivers and the biodiversity they support, concerted efforts are necessary. Partnerships and coalitions between local, state, and federal agencies, nonprofits like Harpeth Conservancy, and mobilized local communities, are helping to ensure that Tennessee's rivers remain vibrant for generations to come. Together, we are collaborating and building consensus for solutions that will ensure the future of clean water through responsible policy, sound science, and strong community engagement.

Caring for the Community THE BELLEVUE COMMUNITY FOOD BANK MAKES SURE NEIGHBORS ARE TAKEN CARE OF YEAR ‘ROUND

With the rising cost of housing, food, and living expenses, many neighbors in the Bellevue community need extra help. The Bellevue Community Food Bank works tirelessly all year long to ensure those neighbors are cared for and have the essentials they need. “We are a community food bank, open to any of our neighbors who need food and essentials,” says the food bank’s director, Robin Dillon. “We’re just here to help the community.” Dillion has been volunteering with the organization since 2021, where she oversees all operations and manages the food bank’s 30+ volunteers. Volunteers work weekly to pack grocery bags filled with items that are distributed to neighbors in need, every Tuesday evening at the Bellevue United Methodist Church, where the Food Bank pantry is located.

“Everybody that comes through our doors gets a prepacked grocery bag filled with canned goods, prepared foods, and essentials,” says Dillon. “Through our partnerships with BELL Garden and Cul2vate, we’re able to provide fresh vegetables to all of our neighbors who come through the door.” Additionally, they receive items including fresh meat, bread, rolls, and desserts. Items such as diapers and baby food are also available, as well as dog and cat food provided by the food bank’s partnership with the Nashville Humane Association. While the organization won’t turn anybody in need away, their service area is focused on helping those in Bellevue, West Nashville (37205), Fairview, and Pegram. They’ll gladly provide groceries to people outside of those areas the first time they

come but will then work with their bilingual resource managers to help refer them to an organization closer to their area. As a community-based organization under the church’s umbrella, the Bellevue Community Food Bank is not a separate 501(c)(3) and can’t apply for grants, so it relies on its partnership with Second Harvest and the generosity of the community for in-kind and financial donations. Dillon says they always make sure that they have food for the 200+ people they care for each week, but their shelves are currently “on the bare side” as donations are dropping off due to the rising cost of food, housing, and other economic factors. “Everybody wants to do something for the holidays, but because we operate for 12 months out of the year, we really

need the community’s support every single month,” says Dillon. The organization has an incredible group of consistent volunteers so for those looking to help, their real need is food and financial donations, especially at the beginning of the year and summertime. Currently, they are collecting items for holiday meals including canned vegetables, paper goods, baking ingredients/mixes, canned meats, stuffing, etc. Gift cards to grocery stores such as Aldi, Publix, and Kroger are always appreciated so they can purchase items to fill any gaps in donations.

The Lawson Theatre at James Lawson High School makes its debut performance this month in the new Lawson Performing Arts Center (LPAC). The state-of-the-art facility seats about 500 and offers an exceptional experience for both performers and audience members. Jamie Emery, Lawson’s Theatre Director, says “We have all the things that you might see at TPAC.” The design includes several Broadway specifications including a three-story fly system, backstage communication, and industry standard lighting and sound. “Lawson students have real-world, hands-on experience,” explains Emery. “Any student coming through our performing arts program can confidently go into a work setting after graduation, and our performers get to experience what it feels like to be on a Broadway stage.” Emery had a vision to grow the theatre program when she joined the Hillwood High School staff in 2019. “One of the first things I wanted to do was to institute a chapter of the International Thespian Society [ITS],” Emery explains. ITS is an honor society that recognizes students who excel in the theatre arts. “As it turns out,” Emery continues, “Hillwood originally chartered its troupe in 1991 and was one of the first 100 chapters in existence.” CONTINUED >

The resources that the new facility offers will allow the theatre program to continue to grow and improve while preserving some of the traditions students enjoyed at Hillwood. Emery says she was excited to learn that ITS allowed Lawson to keep Hillwood’s troupe number. “Which is why we are officially The Lawson Theatre, Troupe 89,” she explains. The Lawson Theatre debuts this month with The SpongeBob Musical. “We wanted something fun and family-friendly for our inaugural production,” says Emery. At the close of the fall production, students will begin auditioning and preparing for Chicago: Teen Edition which will run in early April and will be Troupe 89’s submission for TPAC’s Spotlight Awards, a program that celebrates Tennessee high school musical theatre.

“What really excites me the most about moving to the new space is how excited the community is,” Emery continues. “I was in awe of the number of people who have visited us during open houses.” Emery is hopeful that the excitement about the school and the facility will attract audiences and create a community tradition to enjoy all the performing arts at James Lawson High School. “We have a unique thing happening here. Orchestra, modern, symphonic, marching bands, dance, choir, theatre.
