In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the good fortune in our lives. Thanksgiving, in the true sense of the word, encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and accomplishing goals can be healthy, forgetting the importance of being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. I have so many things to be grateful for; health, friends and family, professional fulfillment, and the gift of living in this beautiful part of the Pacific Northwest. Reflections with Bellevue Mayor Lynne Robinson As Mayor Robinson comes up on the end of her fourth year in office, she is grateful for the opportunity to serve the community. She enthuses about meeting interesting people, experiencing diverse cultures, learning a lot, and creating policies as part of her job. One challenge on Robinson’s mind is the housing shortage that’s affected the Eastside for years. “So many now-grown ‘kids’ can’t move back to Bellevue after college due to the cost,” she says. She puts a lot of time and effort into housing policies and the city has doubled the amount of affordable housing since she’s been on the council, with more in the pipeline. “Next year is going to be the culmination of things we had planned for: transit, housing, more restaurants, and improved parks,” Robinson says. More people who work in Bellevue are living there, and walkable neighborhoods are increasing. After the Eastside starter light rail line from the South Bellevue Park & Ride to Redmond is completed in spring 2024, residents will be able to give their CONTINUED >

cars a break. The full light rail is scheduled to be done in 2025 and will help local residents, workers, and the environment. She continues, “Quality of life is getting better and it’s getting better for more people, which I’m proud of.” Robinson is grateful for her own quality of life in Bellevue. She and her husband live downtown and she says, “We live here by choice. I meet someone every day in Downtown Park and I love that.” She can paddleboard, walk the park, shop, and dine out without ever getting in her car. The mayor says she feels thankful for her husband and his support, and that they got to raise their kids in Bellevue. Amenities like parks, bike lanes, clean air, clean water, high public safety (enhanced with the new CCAT crisis response unit), top-tier education, and cutting edge healthcare draw new people to the city every year. Lately, more biotech research companies and companies within the space industry are getting established in Bellevue. In fact, 650 new companies of all types registered in the first six months of 2023. Robinson says, “Companies want to be here because their employees want to be here, and because they have a collaborative relationship with the city as a community partner.” The Eastside as a whole is known as a home for Big Tech, but small businesses make up 90+% of all business in Bellevue, so there’s a diversity of companies. Bellevue Square is another great asset to the community, hosting events and products highlighting different cultures, arts, and foods. Robinson considers herself “Lucky, for great leadership - including the City Manager - who have worked hard to make Bellevue what it is today.”

1 loaf brioche 20 oz fresh goat cheese 1 lb smoked salmon -- hot smoked and flaked 2 Granny Smith apples -- sliced thin 1 Tablespoon olive oil -- for sautéing 1 Tablespoon butter -- for sautéing

D i re ct i on s: 1. Thinly slice the brioche. Lay out the slices of bread so that there are matching tops and bottoms. 2. On one slice of bread, spread the goat cheese, salmon, and sliced apple. Then add the remaining cheese slice. 3. Heat an 8-10” skillet over medium-high heat until hot enough to evaporate a drop of water upon contact. Add the olive oil and butter. Add the sandwich and cook, covered, over medium-low heat, turning once, until browned on both sides, about 10 minutes. 4. Cut into desired triangles, squares, or rectangles and serve warm. Apple butter or jam works well as a topping.

Courage and the Skills to Soar KINDERING CENTER IS GROWING!

After 60 years with clinics in Bellevue, Bothell, and Renton, Kindering - the largest nonprofit neurodevelopmental center in the Pacific Northwest - celebrated the Grand Opening of its newly expanded Redmond campus, on September 14. The new clinic is located in the Together Center, which began as a bold idea that by bringing several nonprofits into the same space, their impacts in the community would multiply with each new partner organization. Washington State Representative Tana Senn gave the keynote address at the event; the offices of Senator Patty Murray and King County Councilmember Claudia Balducci also shared their remarks on the importance of Early Supports for Infants and Toddlers (ESIT). Dr. Lisa Greenwald, Kindering’s CEO, tells me that the importance of early intervention is based on research that says the brain grows 85% by age three, and neuroplasticity is at a peak during that time. The organization was started in 1962 by five families, with the mission to embrace kids of diverse abilities by providing the finest education and therapies to nurture hope, courage, and the skills to soar. Demand for those therapies is ever growing, and Dr. Greenwald says client counts grow 11-12% each year. Over 10,000 children and families are served each

year through crucial therapies, special education, and family supports. Most services are provided in families’ homes, but Redmond is similar to Bellevue and Bothell as a full-service clinic. Kindering fills gaps in services within the community. Dr. Greenwald mentions that roughly $50M is saved from public school district spending due to Kindering’s services. Community members can support Kindering by volunteering their time (retired teachers, therapists, and others who enjoy working with young children are in demand), or make a financial contribution. Trevor Cobb is many things: Founder and CEO of wealth management firm Avantia, father, car enthusiast (He’s been a track driving instructor, car collector, and currently serves on the board of America’s Automotive Trust), and former Airborne Ranger with the U.S. Army. Before founding Avantia in April of 2020, his career included tenures at The J.P. Morgan Private Bank, Goldman Sachs, and U.S. Trust. But before all of that, Cobb spent twelve years in the Army, where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the nation’s fourth highest combat award. He says the leadership principles he learned in the military apply to the corporate world as well. For those who are unfamiliar, Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is a significant event in the religious traditions of Hinduism, Sikhism, and Jainism. There are many different ways that people celebrate across India and throughout the world, but the overarching theme is the triumphing of good over evil and light over darkness. It’s celebrated over five days with a special meaning attributed to each day. Commonalities in celebrations are around enjoying sweets and delicious foods; and illuminating homes, workplaces, and temples with a variety of lights, candles and diyas (clay lamps filled with oil), even setting off fireworks. Because the timing of the festival is based on the lunar calendar, it falls between October and November. Local resident Nikita Bijlani explains that Diwali commemorates Lord Ram rescuing his wife Sita who had been kidnapped by evil king Ravana. The return of Ram and Sita was heralded by every household in the kingdom lighting lamps, giving it the appearance of a row of lights. Bijlani says one tradition is to leave doors open and pray to welcome Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and good luck. Another tradition is the display of rangoli, elaborate designs made of colored sand at home entrances. Bijlani says, “The rangoli represents the happiness, positivity, and liveliness of a household. It’s intended to welcome Lakshmi, who is believed to visit each household on Diwali day to bless her worshipers with tremendous wealth and prosperity. It is believed that a Hindu household without a clean entrance and rangoli is an abode of bad luck.”
