I hesitate to quote Will Smith after this years Oscars, but hard not to when he does have one of the best summer songs (does that age me?). Our July issue always gets me even that much more excited for summer. In particular, the outdoor concert line up on page 27 excites me most. The Gorge has always been my personal favorite, but now even more so ever since I discovered the best place to stay for the weekend while attending a concert there: Sunland Estates! But more on that in another issue… For now, make sure your summer plans include the Washington coast, and book a stay at the charming town of Seabrook. This month’s cover highlights an image from one of their luxury beach lofts, located in Seabrook’s downtown area, complete with sweeping views of the ocean. I had the opportunity to meet with the founder of this little town, and it was fascinating to learn the vision behind how and why it was built. Check-out page 36 for more info. We also recap a special fundraising event for non-profit, Rainier Athletes, on page 30. The mission and support behind this movement are inspiring and the good news is there is plenty of opportunity to get involved…we hope maybe you do! Tommy Bahama shares a roundup of their 2022 swim line, and I love how they kept it classy with their styles this year. Find even more colors and patterns online, but for now check out page 42. Bellevue Arts Museum Arts Fair

2022 Bellevue City Amateur is July 30-31

The Bellevue Arts Museum Arts Fair returns to downtown Bellevue this summer, from July 29 – 31 at Bellevue Arts Museum and Bellevue Square. The festival, now in its 76th year, is a staple of summertime in Bellevue and features a marketplace with thousands of original artworks, an exciting mix of community programs, free admission to Bellevue Arts Museum, live music, and more. The Bellevue City Amateur is the premier amateur golf tournament on Seattle's eastside. This year's event takes place at Bellevue Golf Course on Saturday, July 30th and Sunday, July 31st and is open to amateur golfers with a USGA handicap index of 25.0 or less. Considered one of the most scenic concert locations in the world, the Gorge sits near the Columbia River and offers sweeping views of the river and the Columbia Gorge canyon to concert-goers. The Gorge also offers a campground that is a wildly popular option for festival-attendees. If camping isn’t your thing, consider staying in Sunland Estates or Cave B Estate Winery. There is reserved seating near the front of the stage; however, most of the 27,500 seats are located in the sprawling lawns at the Gorge.

Washington state’s oldest winery, Chateau Ste. Michelle, is celebrating its 38th Summer Concert Series. By summer’s end, the picturesque outdoor amphitheater will have hosted concerts ranging from pop and jazz to rock and classical music. Although there are reserve seats available, the general admission seating on the lawn makes for a perfect date night or night out for a group. The winery allows you to bring in blankets, low-back chairs and picnic baskets with non-alcoholic drinks. Food and wine can be purchased on-site.

Marymoor Park is located in King County, county-owned and the largest, oldest and most popular park. The summer concert series, Concerts at Marymoor, provides an intimate outdoor concert experience. Outside beverages are not allowed in, but concert-goers are able to bring their own food, blankets and low-back chairs. Reserved seating is available, and there is general seating on the lawn. Parking is available on-site for $5 and is free for seasonal parking pass holders. Marymoor Parks spans more than 640 acres and is located next to the Clise Mansion.

The Hayden Homes Amphitheater is an independent, outdoor riverfront Amphitheater built in 2001. Since their first season in 2002 they have hosted over one million guests at their venue for ticketed and free concerts. All summer long the Amphitheater presents some of the biggest names in entertainment, and the second largest brewfest in the northwest every August. They are part of the Old Mill District, which incorporates shopping, dining, outdoor recreation, businesses and residences.

Community Plays It Forward

A penthouse private dining room perched 31 floors above Bellevue might seem like a strange place to gather in support of a non-profit founded on grassroots and grit, especially when the last event was held in a gym. But on this Thursday night, skyline views, sparkling champagne and elevated cuisine became an unlikely supporting backdrop for a celebration of community, the power of relationships and big goals for the next decade of students and mentors. Rainier Athletes, a nonprofit dedicated to youth mentorship and empowerment, hosted its first in-person event in two years, an inaugural celebration of “Playmakers” on Thursday, May 19 at Ascend Prime Steak & Sushi. The event gathered together legacy supporters, longtime mentors and successful graduates of the Rainer Athletes program to hear Tod Leiweke, CEO and co-owner of the Seattle Kraken, talk about the importance of mentorship while presenting the first Corporate Playmaker Award to Ascend Hospitality Group. Since 2013, Rainier Athletes executive director and founder, Jesse Franklin, a graduate of Sammamish High School, along with his small, but mighty staff, and an army of volunteer mentors, works with the Bellevue School District to identify and nurture local student athletes and their families through oneon-one supportive relationships. He says, “At our core, Rainier Athletes is simply a community.”

Over the last ten years, RA has worked to build a mentorship movement that expands access to opportunities for youth who have been historically left out. “Our model is designed to reach beyond sports, beyond the students, and beyond the mentors,” says Jesse. “Our community of supporters, those who continue to step up and walk alongside us, make it possible to walk alongside Rainier Athletes youth and their families. I am grateful to honor Elaina Morris, CEO and President, on behalf of Ascend Hospitality Group, with the 2022 PlayMaker Award as they continue to join us in our mission to expand access to mentorship, connection and community.” The Rainier Athletes long term mentoring approach has proven itself over the last decade. From serving three students in 2013 to 120 students in 2022. This June, they will applaud a third cohort of students, all who first joined RA as fifth graders, as they graduate from high school. All of them came to RA as fifth graders and now have the potential to be the first generation of their family to graduate from college. Even during the pandemic, RA staff facilitated over 5,000 virtual mentor-mentee check-ins. The results of that commitment are clear in community feedback. In the last teacher survey, 95% of respondents reported that RA directly increased their students’ sense of belonging. One teacher said, “RA is giving students the social opportunities they so desperately need in our post-remote learning world. Students are able to connect with one another in authentic, less academic ways and in a more identity-affirming space.” The pandemic increased the need for authentic human connection and left many young people feeling the lingering effects of loneliness. This past year, 1 out of 4 students in Bellevue reported having feelings of self-harm. Rainier Athletes hopes to meet the growing need by pairing every student on their ever growing waitlist with the dedicated support of a one-on-one mentor. To reach this goal, RA has expanded their board from five to 13 members and significantly increased their investment in mentor recruitment. The Board of Directors is eager to grow the mentor model beyond athletics. Ally Svenson, Board Member and Co-Founder of MOD Pizza, recognizes the power that mentorship can have whether the young person is “a singer, a painter, or a dancer.” Board members include experts on youth development, education, business, human resources, community engagement, and philanthropy. Board president Betsy Johnson adds, “The passion and skills of our new board will help provide vital mentor relationships connecting kids with activities that interest them.’ Now back to that party at Ascend. After surprising Bellevue Mayor Lynne Robinson, with a fiery birthday cake, Rainier Athletes Board Member and Corporate Playmaker Elaina Morris, and RA supporter Tod Leiweke, inspired the crowd to “Play It Forward in the Sky” through real time text donations, raffle purchases and lively bidding on a one-of-kind Kraken experience. Spoiler alert: it quickly became five-of-a-kind, and combined with early donations and sponsorships, sped the fundraising total to $150,000, double the goal and enough to add many more students to the RA roster and directly benefit programs that level the playing field for some of the 3500 Bellevue School District students who qualify for free and reduced price lunch programs.

Casey and Laura Roloff had a “Field of Dreams” vision for the Washington coast. The couple had successfully built a village community called Bella Beach on the Oregon coast and were inspired to do it again somewhere else. After doing some research, they discovered something interesting: there are 10 lodging units on the Oregon coast for every one lodging unit on the Washington coast, but Washington has more than double the population and five times the household wealth within a three-hour drive from Bellevue. The couple then took a road trip along the Washington coast and encountered a gorgeous bluff with acres of vacant land behind it. The stars seemed to have aligned for the Roloff’s on that bluff as they both realized this property is exactly what they were looking for. “So, we thought, it’s just build it,” Casey said, “and they will come.” And build it they did, and are continuing to do. It’s been 19 years, and currently Seabrook consists of 500 homes, 75 lived in year-round (several homeowners left the city during the pandemic and bought a home in Seabrook full time), and 275 in the rental program. This year, Seabrook will build 70 homes, and start on the Pacific Landing (34 luxury apartments + 7,000 SF of retail). Casey gave Bellevue Lifestyle a tour of the town, where we learned that every detail was considered, each home intentionally

built, each walking path, each front porch…everything was deliberate, down to the curb of the street. Seabrook aims to be a place people want to live, work and play. The town center has a little something for everyone; you can hang at the food trucks with the kids, or catch the sunset at the fantastically curated wine bar (no kids allowed). There are those that say the town feels too forced, too perfect, like straight out of “The Stepford Wives.” And while it’s no doubt that every inch of Seabrook was calculated and curated, the intention behind it is incredibly thoughtful, sustainable, and with a heart for community. The Roloff’s make it known that their biggest legacy is to make Seabrook an inclusive place. Anyone is welcome to visit and enjoy Seabrook. And there is plenty to do while visiting. The town itself host events throughout the year, and Mother Nature provides opportunities nearby to dig for razor clams, forage for mushrooms, fish, mountain bike, surf, hike and more. What is Seabrook working on now? A grocery store, arcade, heated pool, and work out facility will be completed early 2023. Their new Market Lofts offer beautiful views and accessibility to downtown activity. Loft owners, Jon and Georgina Brandt, purchased for exactly those reasons. 01 // Our custom, built-in, triple bunk beds were essential for our family of 5 in a 2-bedroom condo and were possible thanks to the 10+ foot ceilings in The Beach Loft. Our vision and design was brought to life by Chris from Seabrook Construction. There is beautiful white oak guard railings and ladders, personal reading lamps and headboard shelving to prop up a teddy bear or keep favorite bedtime stories nearby.

02 // The design objective of the master walk-in closet and vanity was to reimagine the basic low functioning closet into an unexpected space that was fun and functional by adding custom closet built ins, a white oak dressing table, some whimsical wallpaper, a Capiz chandelier and a gorgeous brass vanity mirror. 03 // The intimate seating area nestled in the bay window with an ocean view was a very important design element because it added a lot of functionality for our family. It is our favorite spot for morning coffee, an afternoon nap, evening cocktail hour and family game night. It is warm, versatile, comfortable, and elegant.

ALWAYS BET THE LONG ODDS (In honor of Rich Strike’s wine at The Kentucky Derby and featuring Kentucky whiskey) INGREDIENTS • 1.5 oz Basil Hayden Bourbon • .75 oz Amontillado Sherry • .5 oz fresh lemon juice, strained • .5 oz Demerara Oleo Saccharum (see recipe) • 1 dash Fee Brothers Whiskey Barrel Aged Bitters • Rolled Orange Peel on skewer for Garnish DIRECTIONS Combine all ingredients in shaker tin with ice and shake vigorously for 10 seconds. Double strain into chilled coupe glass. With a peeler, cut an approximately 2" long twist of orange peel and express the oils from the skin over the top of the drink. Roll orange peel and skewer with a bamboo pick and place on rim of glass. Enjoy!

DEMERARA OLEO SACCHARUM INGREDIENTS • 2 cups Demerara Sugar • Peels of 3 oranges and 2 lemons, washed • 1 cup filtered water DIRECTIONS 1. Peel oranges and lemons, being careful not to remove too much of the white pith. Place peels in a medium saucepan. Add sugar and muddle heavily to release the oils in the peels. Stir well and let sit for 1 hour. 2. Add water and place over medium heat. Stir frequently until sugar is completely dissolved- you do not need to let it boil. 3. As soon as sugar is dissolved, remove from heat and let cool. Strain to remove peels. Store refrigerated in an airtight container.
