Macklemore is known for his music, but lately, Ben Haggerty, the man behind the hits has been busy making moves offstage. Bellevue Lifestyle has been shadowing this local celeb; haunting his secret sources for vintage cool, watching him “grow the game” as a player and investor in the new 5i indoor golf venue on Capitol Hill, and celebrating the Grand Opening of his Bogey Boys lifestyle brand pop-up shop, now open in University Village. Performing a full life as a designer, entrepreneur, social justice advocate, and part owner of the Kraken, Macklemore is glowed up and shining as a father of three young kids with his wife, Tricia. As Father’s Day looms, he confesses how he succumbed to the lure of golf, the ultimate Dad game. In his own words: “My love for the game of golf started 2 years ago. It was a balmy morning on the beautiful, yet sleepy island of Kauai, the day after thanksgiving in 2018. My brother, my best friend, and a tall lanky older gentleman who for the sake of this writing will be referred to as “Marko,” peer pressured me into renting clubs and venturing out onto the course behind our Airbnb. The only golfing I had done prior was a handful of rounds in the late 90’s at the local par 3 course where the longest hole was 110 yards. I don’t think I had ever hit a driver.

My brother and I have always been competitive with each other. While warming up at the range, he made a bold claim to the group that he was a “bogey golfer.” I still have yet to witness him break 100, but that’s not the point, I had something to play for that day. As we stood on the first tee box, I looked out onto the vast fairway of pristinely mowed and very hydrated grass, but that isn’t what stood out. The entire course was lined with nice homes, some tucked behind palm trees, others that were more vulnerable to golfers like me. Sure enough, on my first swing the golf ball came off the club in a sweeping, high and aggressive duck hook heading left. Somewhere between anxiety, excitement and pure terror I tracked my ball with bated breath as someone in our group mumbled “oh shit”. Turns out roofs make a really loud sound when you hit them with golf balls and this opening tee shot was no exception. We all fell out laughing as I quickly requested my god given right to a mulligan. Midway through the back 9 I had a decent lead on the “bogey golfer.” Between the two of us we had hit a total of seven houses and weren’t slowing down. At that point golf seemed like more of a lawsuit waiting to happen verses

something I could see myself getting into. But then everything changed. On the par four, 14th hole, I found myself in a fairway bunker off the tee. I had struggled the entire round making contact in the sand, much less getting it out, so my expectations for the shot ahead were low. I assessed the yardage to the green and decided that a 5 iron might get the job done. I pulled the club back, closed my eyes, and swung as hard as I could. The truth is, I don’t remember if the ball made it to the green that day. I don’t remember my final score or what I ended up with on that hole. That’s not important. What I do remember is I hit it, and I hit it pure. A rush came over my body. A sudden surge of dopamine and a feeling that hasn’t left me since. I wanted that feeling again. If I don’t hit that shot who knows where I am now. Maybe I leave the course that day with the mere satisfaction of defeating my brother and that would have been enough. Maybe I have some funny tales about that one year we hit a bunch of houses and that’s where my golf story ends. But it wasn’t. It turns out that day marked the beginning of my journey with the sport that I have fallen in love with. And for the last 2 years I wake up every day with the same thought…I want to play.”

The best fatherhood advice you’ve received? My father told me growing up that “It is impossible to have a bad day two days in a row.” I grew up believing that and whenever I had a “bad day,” I would bounce back and believe the next day was going to be amazing. I am now teaching my children that same mantra. Favorite family activities in Bellevue? Our family likes to take walks around Kelsey Creek Farm and pick blueberries at Larsen Lake during the summer. Advice for balancing career and family? This is an ongoing challenge as my wife is an internal medicine doctor and we have two children. We have managed for many years working full-time and doing the drop-off and pick-ups from daycare and school ourselves. I like to finish all of my clinic work/notes at the office before coming home and that way, I can spend all of my time with my family. I try not to be on my phone or computer in front of my kids as much as possible and I do all I can to be at their sporting events and practices. Is there a hobby you are nurturing right now? My second “job” stemmed from social media. I started as a way to disseminate credible information around medicine and dermatology and my channels have evolved into a blend of lifestyle and skincare and some humor. I am so grateful for the support I have received and now have over 700K subscribers to my channels. YouTube (Dr. Daniel Sugai), TikTok (@drspf ) and Instagram (@danielsugaimd).

The best fatherhood advice you’ve received? I think the best parenting advice is to practice unconditional love and support for your children -- always. Our children are so keenly tuned to our disapproval that it lasts (as hurt) forever! Career advice to my children and grandchildren - explore until you find what you love to do.

Advice for balancing career and family? I am probably anything but a good example for balancing my life and career. After many decades of being a superintendent, my only defense is that when one is so blessed to still enjoy his work after this long, be sure to count those blessings! I could not have done this without my lifetime partner, Sandy.

Favorite family activities in Bellevue? I am still a visitor to Bellevue in many ways. Every area seems to have a new discovery. As a died-in-thewool UW grad, I was thrilled to find Dick’s Drive in the other day!

Is there a hobby you are nurturing right now? Each of the places I have been able to serve in my Interim Superintendent role becomes my next major project, in a good way. There is always much to do and the sense of people depending on you to help. That feels good.

The best fatherhood advice you’ve received? Fatherhood is special to me because I get to see the world through the innocent and curious eyes of my three children and it brings me closer to my own father, who was a role model for me growing up and someone I aspire to be like. I will never forget an existential conversation I had with him when I was a young man, when life felt ever so fleeting, I wondered how I could make an everlasting impact on the world and how to know what was important in life. My father told me that these questions about what is important in life would be answered the moment I held my first born, that in that moment I would learn the deepest, truest kind of love and realize what is important in life. This moment came back to me when I held my father’s hand as he passed, in that moment I looked around and saw my brothers and sister standing around my father. His legacy was in his family, in the love he gave us, and in the values he taught us. I believe that the mark of a successful man is that of leaving a lasting impression on his children, and raising compassionate, kind, creative and passionate individuals. My favorite quote, that has inspired for nearly 30 years, is from Henry David Thoreau:

“If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”

Favorite family activities in Bellevue? We love visiting the amazing urban parks around Bellevue, especially the Bellevue Downtown Park. It is incredible to have such beautiful open spaces in a vibrant urban setting. Advice for balancing career and family? My advice is to do everything you can to slow down and enjoy each phase of parenting your children because it goes fast! Too often as parents, we get caught up in the mad rush of balancing work and raising kids. We are fortunate that my wife and

I practice Orthodontics together, so we are able to adapt our work schedule so that one of us is present for school drop offs, pick-ups, sports, etc. Is there a hobby you are nurturing right now? Our free time is filled following our children, and we love it! Our 2 older kids are living in Italy, our 21-year-old daughter is studying Psychology in Milan and our 18-year-old son is playing professional soccer. Our 4-year-old son keeps us very busy and entertained, between playing robots, Legos and soccer.

A little over a year ago, I chose to move to the Eastside and join the Bellevue Police Department. I did my research, and I knew I was moving to an area that is vibrant and growing, where the community supports its police department and enjoys a high quality of life. I moved from Southern California, where it’s around 80 or 90 degrees every day, and I couldn’t be happier with the cooler temperatures in Washington. Of course, the rain could take a break now and then, but it is truly beautiful here! Pricilla and I enjoy exploring the area. We are big-time foodies and check out restaurants all over the Eastside and Seattle. We drove onto a ferry and went to Bainbridge Island, and that was crazy because we had never done that before! I am most impressed with the people and how welcoming they’ve been to Pricilla and me. We are really enjoying getting to know everyone and the area. I retired from the Santa Monica Police Department after 25 years in 2019, but following the protests and social unrest in 2020, I felt called to return to the profession. I am sincerely grateful to City Manager, Brad Miyake, for selecting me to be the police chief. I also greatly appreciate

the City Council and community support I’ve received. I feel honored to lead this department during these trying times. The Bellevue Police Department enjoys well-earned support from this community, but it is safe to say that the past few years have been challenging for both communities and law enforcement. One of the issues we are seeing around the country and here regionally is a rise in crime, specifically a spike in property crime here in Bellevue. The issues causing this crime wave are complex and will require us to work together to reduce them. In my humble opinion, law enforcement alone cannot solve these problems. It will take a three-prong approach: P.I.E.Prevention, Intervention, Enforcement: Each discipline doing its part to mitigate the challenges facing us today. E is the last letter in the word P.I.E., yet often enforcement is what’s first called on and employed. I’m confident that by partnering with other disciplines and our community members, we can enhance the quality of life for everyone who lives, works and visits Bellevue. It will take a team effort, and I’m looking forward to the challenge.

FRIED CHICKEN SANDWICH WITH JALAPEÑO SLAW INGREDIENTS (SANDWICH) 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon ground paprika 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder Cayenne pepper, to taste Boneless, skinless chicken breasts Vegetable oil (as needed) Sesame seed bun Pickles

DIRECTIONS 1. Mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder and cayenne pepper together in a shallow bowl. 2. Fill your skillet with oil to about 1-inch deep and heat to 350 degrees. 3. Coat your chicken breasts in the flour and seasoning mixture, then carefully place them into the heated oil. 4. Cook until golden brown with an internal temperature of 165 degrees. 5. Lightly toast your sesame seed bun, then top with pickles, fried chicken breast and slaw to taste.

FOR THE SLAW Combine mayo, hot sauce, garlic and dill pickle juice with shredded red cabbage, pickled onions and candied jalapeños.
