April 2022 PUBLISHER

Caitlin Agnew | caitlin.agnew@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

Taylor Robinson | taylor.robinson@citylifestyle.com

Growing up locally, my family did all of the quintessential PNW activities: backpacking, river rafting, hiking, fishing, boating, skiing, etc. While I savor the memories, I actually don’t participate in much of those outdoor activities anymore, and this issue was a little motivation to revisit some of them. My dad actually contributed the fly fishing article this month (page 18), and is on the cover along with two of my nephews. I’m thinking maybe it’s time to put the waders on and join him this spring! For our April issue, we wanted to share with you how some of our neighbors are getting out to explore locally. This issue also highlights diverse spots around town to discover, whether it is a restaurant with a great patio to enjoy, a fishing hole to take in nature and the surrounding scenery or a niche boutique hotel for a relaxing staycation—there is something for everyone. We would love to hear from you about your favorite hidden gems in town and your go-to travel destinations, so drop us an email or share it with us on Facebook or Instagram. Here is to a happy spring full of adventure!

John Agnew teaching his grandkids to fly fish.

Get Hooked on these Fly Fishing Locations for All Ages and Skill Levels ARTICLE BY JOHN AGNEW | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KARA MERCER The lure of the outdoors in Pacific Northwest spring and summer is irresistible. One of the best contexts for getting ‘out there’ can be fishing. Truly, introducing kids/grandkids to this great past time can lead to some real magic. Imagine building years of memories of times together on the plentiful lake, river, stream, and salt water fisheries just a short drive from Bellevue. You don’t need to be an expert to get started, you can be on the water in no time! We are rich in accessible fisheries. For short outings with the kids in the early stages, try one of the many juvenile only fishing holes right close by: 1. The Middle Fork of the Snoqualmie River is accessible, beautiful, easily waded, and can be very productive. For more info,

visit: unaccomplishedangler.com/tag/middle-fork-snoqualmieriver-fly-fishing/ 2. Rattlesnake Lake is best fished from some sort of small boat or raft. It too is beautiful and we’ve had some wonderful evenings full of fish. For more info, visit: flyfishsnoqualmie.com/2010/04/ rattlesnake-lake-report-and-controversy.html 3. Try a guided fly fishing trip. Talk to the gang at Red’s on the Yakima River. They will set you up with an experienced guide for beginners. Spending a day with an expert, picking flies, tying knots, casting and getting coaching on the spot really shortens the learning curve. We have spent the last five years kayaking, hiking, and taking long walks on the beach. My fiancé Garrett is the biggest supporter of my deep wanderlust. He will take time off to adventure with me, but also fully understands when I need to jump in the car and drive off on my solo journeys.

HOW DID YOU DISCOVER THIS PASSION? This passion was discovered when, as a busy professional, I found that I could take Coco anywhere. She may have short legs, but she will wander endlessly with her humans! TELL US ABOUT YOUR FUTURE GOALS. It would be fun to get a sidecar for my scooter and scoot around with Coco by my side. As seen on the popular TV series “Treehouse Masters,” Nelson Treehouse & Supply built and designed Washington’s first treehouse bed and breakfast. Each tree house has its own unique design and charm. Bellevue Rendering of Eastrail

PROGRESS ON REGIONAL TR AILS IN BELLEVUE 34

Mayor Lynne Robinson riding on Eastrail

AN UPDATE FROM MAYOR LYNNE ROBINSON

ARTICLE BY MAYOR LYNNE ROBINSON

When I was working as a homecare physical therapist, I was always looking for ways to get to my patients’ homes without driving a car. Soon, the Eastside will have many more options for walking and cycling. Right now, work is moving forward on two regional trail connections: the Mountains to Sound Greenway and Eastrail. These safe, protected- trails contribute to our great neighborhoods and robust economy. Every company that hires active individuals is interested in multi-modal opportunities in Bellevue. On Jan. 7, city, state and federal leaders marked the completion of the latest Mountains to Sound Greenway segment in Bellevue’s Factoria neighborhood. The new pedestrian and bicycle extension, which parallels Interstate 90, makes it safer and more convenient for people to walk, ride and roll through Bellevue’s busy Factoria neighborhood. This segment extends the trail from 132nd Avenue Southeast to 142nd Place Southeast and a previous segment, from I-405 to 132nd Avenue Southeast, was completed in early 2021. CONTINUED >

Mayor Lynne Robinson riding on Eastrail

“We know that residents want to see amenities, activities, public art and performance space along the trail, as well as trees and vegetation with areas for seating and shade.” Together, the 1.2-mile city construction project, valued at $27 million, fulfills a significant portion of the trail that runs east-west through Bellevue. Design and construction funding to complete the trail within Bellevue is not yet secured, but once that happens and the entire trail is complete, I’ll be ready for a weekend ride from here to Ellensburg, through the Mountains to Sound Greenway National Heritage Area. Information on the Bellevue trail construction projects is available at BellevueWA.gov/mts-greenway. Our second regional trail connection, Eastrail, is a northsouth multi-purpose path along a former railroad grade stretching 42 miles from Renton to Snohomish. Several sections, including portions along the seven miles of trail through Bellevue, are already completed. Recent business investments in the project, including $2.5 million from Facebook, Kaiser Permanente and R.E.I., plus a $7.5 million grant from Amazon to develop the trail over the historic Wilburton Trestle, have provided the funding necessary to complete key segments of the trail in Bellevue by 2024.

36

O UR TOWN | SPORTS + RE CRE ATI ON

The stretch of Eastrail through Bellevue will be the most urban part of the trail corridor. It will include a section in the Wilburton area, a commercial district adjacent to Downtown Bellevue, that is slated for future redevelopment. This presents a unique opportunity to integrate Eastrail into the neighborhood and create a sense of place between the trail, public space and access points to private buildings and businesses. We know that residents want to see amenities, activities, public art and performance space along the trail, as well as trees and vegetation with areas for seating and shade. The city will continue to gather public input and collaborate with business partners and other stakeholders as King County, the trail owner, develops the framework plan. In 2024, we expect to see these north-south and eastwest pedestrian and bike trail networks intersecting in Bellevue. This will allow safe, protected and fun routes to commute, recreate and exercise. I hope you will join me!

HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO CREATE OVER 30 SHORT FILMS CHRONICLING YOUR FAMILY’S ADVENTURES? Originally, my motivation was knowing that when I’m old I’ll be crying playing these films on a loop and they’ll be my most valuable possessions. The act of filmmaking forces me to take in the entire experience: lighting, dialogue, scenery. It’s hard and consuming, but when I’m done I feel like I’ve created something.

Tilly Jane, then 11, and Ivan, then 9, pause after a hike into the Stevens Pass side-country.

WHAT INSPIRED YOUR FAMILY TO DO ALL OF THE OUTDOOR SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES YOU DO? When I was dating my now-wife, I described the kind of life I wanted for my future family. My description was full of waterfalls, mountains and rock walls. She loved the same things but eventually I realized that our understandings of those places were different. I saw them as arenas to achieve mastery and work through mental, emotional and physical barriers. Veronica pursued them as a way to explore and experience something new. WHAT IS A FAVORITE OUTDOOR MEMORY FOR YOUR FAMILY? Our first overnight sea kayaking trip to a tiny island in the San Juans. We had three sea kayaks and too much gear for a single trip. I raced 45 minutes to the island to drop off our gear, then returned to pick up Tilly Jane who was six at the time and Ivan, four. I put them in my kayak and Eleanor, eight, and Veronica each paddled their own. We explored the island that day and the next before returning to Orcas Island to take the ferry back, but we barely missed it and had to wait hours for the next one. Initially we were bummed, but Veronica and I drank beers on the dock and the children and I danced to Ingrid Michaelson playing out of a cell phone speaker. After dark we played hide-and-seek in the park until the ferry arrived.

Tilly Jane, then 11, o n a one-day, 20-mile journey through the Enchantments. Christian Knightfeatured the hike on YouTube titled “Oh, the Places You'll Go!"

ANY PLANS FOR THE NEXT BIG ADVENTURE? I’ve got two for which we’ve been preparing: the first is a three-week whitewater kayaking trip to Ecuador, hopefully before Eleanor graduates from high school. The other adventure is the 1,000-mile Inside Passage, from Skagway, Alaska to Houghton Beach in Kirkland. I just can’t imagine a more fulfilling experience as a father.
