New Year, New Look
January 2022 PUBLISHER

You'll notice a new look in this issue – we have refreshed and redesigned our cover and layouts, bringing more visual alignment to our brand through our City Lifestyle website, print, and social platforms. As always, Bellevue Lifestyle is for and about the community, and your participation and feedback is encouraged and welcome. Sections in each issue - such as City Scene, Business Monthly, and Events - are compiled by your submissions, so stay in touch with your business announcements and upcoming events through our website citylifestyle.com/Bellevue or by emailing Bellevue@ citylifestyle.com. Our January issue is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year: physical fitness, wellness trends, and inspirational athletes, is the focus of this issue. It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be. For me personally, I’m preparing for the arrival of a baby girl at the end of this month, so slowing down, giving myself extra grace, and prioritizing rest and family are on my goal list this year. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things and make a daily decision to act on them. Here's to a healthy and happy 2022!

Eastside Market Review
vdbcompass.com
Volume and prices were up across the Eastside for the first ten months of 2021, while days on market were down, compared to the same period last year. Woodinville had the greatest growth in sales at 103% with average days on market down 81%. In West Bellevue, sales jumped 19% as value increased to the highest level, 29%. Following traditional slowing in the marketplace over the holidays, we look forward to rebirth and renewal in the Spring of 2022. With tech growth strong and rates near historic lows, we expect a resurgence in Buyer demand as inventory increases. For those wanting to make a move, this dynamic could prove beneficial to both Sellers and Buyers. We appreciate the opportunity to serve Sellers and Buyers and welcome all into our VDB | Compass family. For more information about the market in your current or desired area, please contact us at 425.882.8821 or reply@vdbcompass.com. *Data shown is for single family homes priced $1M+ Jan - Oct 2021 (Compared to Jan - Oct 2020) from Trendgraphix.

What is a Sound Bath?
Discover Why Sound Therapy is Considered One of the Ultimate Forms of Self-Care PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRANDTEGIC
20
O UR TOWN | L IFE + CU LTURE
Sound baths may seem like yet another New Age trend, but sound therapy is as old as time, dating back over 40,000 years. Fast forward to 2022, and sound baths have hit the mainstream. They’re conducted in high-end studios in major cities, celebrities swear by them, colleges provide them to stressed out students, and recovery centers use them for people living with addiction or trauma. So, how can you try it out for yourself here in Bellevue? Sound Therapist, Danica Eakman, owns Green Door Sound Bath and has a home studio in Hunts Point where she sees clients and claims that “…sound baths are for everyone. You do not have to be into yoga or spirituality. Just come with an open mind to heal yourself from whatever it is you need healing from.” Danica became a sound bath practitioner in August of 2020 after trying to conceive for 4 years. “The stress and anxiety of IVF lead me to hearing my first bowl. I immediately relaxed and felt like myself again. I knew I had to do this for others,” says Eakman. Bellevue Lifestyle asked Danica to explain exactly what a sound bath is and how indulging in one can benefit your health. WHAT IS A SOUND BATH? A sound bath is a meditative experience where those in attendance are “bathed” in sound waves played by a sound bath practitioner. The goal is to calm the mind while relaxing and resetting the nervous system. Sound healing has been used in many cultures for thousands of years.
HOW DOES A SOUND BATH WORK? A client will lie down while the sound bath practitioner will begin playing different sound bowls that correlate with different chakras in the body. The sound waves travel into the body to find any energetic or emotional blockages you may have and bring them to the surface so they can be removed. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? Sound baths help to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Helps to manage ADHD. Improves sleep quality. Lower blood pressure. And it has been recently introduced as an accompaniment to holistic oncology treatment and they are seeing really improved results on the patients as a whole. WHAT SHOULD A NEW CLIENT EXPECT WHEN GOING TO A SOUND BATH? A deep relaxation. My favorite quote about sound baths is “mediation is like taking the stairs and a sound bath is like taking the elevator.” – Sara Auster. I had tried to meditate before sound baths and I found it nearly impossible to quiet my mind in meditation alone. HOW SOON CAN ONE FEEL RESULTS? The effects are almost immediate for some, where others take a few minutes to let go and quiet their minds. The more clients visit, the longer lasting the effects are and the quicker you can jump into the relaxation of a sound bath. I recommend this as a regular practice. BODY
Benny Mobley, 57 year old body builder, life coach, and owner of Better Body Total Fitness, is living proof that you can get better with age. “You can’t stop from getting older, but you can slow it down by how you take care of your body and what you put in it from the outside in,” says Mobley. “When I was younger, I ate everything fried growing up in the south that’s what you do. It wasn’t until I joined a gym in 1993 that I realized I was meant to be a professional fitness coach and trainer.” For Benny, mindset is everything. “I think people give up as they age mainly because it’s their mindset, they try and do it alone. Yes, it is hard to stay in shape as you age, it’s hard to get started and stay motivated,” says Mobley. But with help from a professional, and choosing to do the work, anything is possible. Benny’s favorite quote, from Les Brown, reflects this: “If you do what’s easy in life, life will be hard later, spiritually, financially, and emotionally, but if you do what’s hard in life, life will be easy later spiritually, financially and emotionally.” And that simple philosophy is what continues to drive Benny personally. “The small simple changes are what got me to where I am today. I get routine physical checkups, eat proper nutrient, get eight hours of sleep, I laugh a lot which is good for the soul.

Twenty years from now, I will still be the best version of myself by sticking to this simple formula.” Through his business, Better Body Total Fitness, he teaches people these four pillars that will help build a lasting foundation to better health: 1. Lifestyle: Minor changes over time will amaze you. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about progress. 2. Commitment: Invest in yourself for 45 minutes to an hour a week to build a healthier, stronger you. 3. Discipline: Once you make the commitment to the lifestyle change having the
discipline to stick to it will grow easier and easier each week. You will be rebuilt with a new image, one which motivates you to push that much further. 4. Consistency: To succeed, it’s important to know the milestone you want to reach and stick to it. These principles apply to his wide variety of clients that range from young and old (youngest is 16, oldest is 91) and all nationalities. Ultimately, Benny’s passion is to help others, by consistently inspiring, encouraging, and motivating those around him. “Don’t allow the labels of life or someone else’s opinion of you become your reality, always be the best version of yourself.”

C U T T I N G edge W E L L N E S S A Path to Your Best Quality of Life
Quality of Life = Wellness. And considering the last couple years, now more than ever, people seem to be reassessing and reinvigorating their wellness regimes. While we all know we could probably use a little more sleep, fruits and vegetables, vitamin D, and exercise; many have a desire to level up even more and dabble in cutting edge programs that are now becoming more mainstream and accessible. The very definition of cutting edge is something that is the latest, greatest, and newest, and we reached out to PRO Club to share some of the cutting-edge services they offer, and why they choose to offer them in the first place. PRO Club is owned by a renowned cardiovascular surgeon, Dr. Mark Dedomenico who invented the coronary bypass surgery and founded the Hope Heart Institute, which is now operating inside PRO Club/Medical. He has chosen to cure cardiovascular disease by treating obesity which cures metabolic conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and Type 2 Diabetes, 80% of the time without medications through the 20/20 LifeStyles weight management program. From this, many of PRO Club’s medical/wellness services were further developed. The medical background and vision of Dr. Mark Dedomenico guides the development of PRO’s programs. His expertise in hyperbarics, stem cells, bioidentical hormones, cardiovascular surgery innovations, genetics, and weight loss are infused throughout the development of PRO’s treatments and programs. In addition, PRO continually seeks the latest medical research to stay ahead of what science is delivering. “We pride ourselves on being an industry leader rather than a follower.

We owe our members the best quality of life we can give them. Plus, our wellness services offered by PRO Medical are open to the public,” says Dr. Dedomenico. PRO Clubs top 3 cutting edge services include: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: Expedites healing for post-surgery, stroke recovery, and anti-aging by promoting angiogenesis. Athletes use this for concussion and injury recovery. Hormone Optimization Therapy with bioidentical hormones: Age Management service that allows people to age optimally rather than accept normal aging and its negative symptoms. The aging population has a desire to feel and look younger, gain more energy, increase confidence, eliminate menopausal symptoms, and improve mental clarity. Genetic testing: We can understand from an individual’s genetic blueprint how they metabolize certain foods, how they recover from injuries, how their body is designed to exercise best (strength, endurance, speed, etc.), and how their skin will age. This allows us to personalize fitness, nutrition, skin care and wellness programs specific to their genetic blueprint. This service has seen popularity in our 20/20 LifeStyles weight loss program. ROCKY URSINO Born and raised in Bellevue, Rocky is the youngest of seven in a big Italian family. He’s a USAT accredited Coach and the Head Coach and owner of PR Performance in Bellevue. Rocky started out competing in triathlons in 2000, then advanced into Ironman’s. Holding the title of Overall Winner for the 2019 Alohaman Extreme Triathlon in Kailua Kona, Rocky is a 14-time Ironman, Ironman Kona World Championship finisher, 12-time Marathoner, 9-time Boston Marathon qualifier and 2-time USAT All American.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? Great quality time with my friends. I’ve always advocated investing in one’s health and fitness, and I want to challenge myself and defy age. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR 2022? It will be one of the first years where I’ve gone into the season fully healthy and I’m setting new time and placement goals for the races I have planned. An Ironman race requires about 20-25 hours of training a week, an ÖTILLÖ (team swimming and running) race about 18 hours a week. I’m lucky to have the kind of work lifestyle that allows this training balance.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING ENDURANCE ATHLETES? Bite it off in small pieces, start gradually and work up to your goal. Look at a triathlon in pieces – focus on your challenge areas, those you’re weakest at, and use skills from your stronger areas to improve. It’s important to set realistic goals for yourself and find a group of people to train with, that’s a great motivator. My current partners in crime are much younger than me. I’m constantly training, but the volume and intensity varies throughout the year. There is an “off-season,” but we still stay fit and active during that time so as not to lose a lot of our fitness.
ROCK Y URSINO
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PLACE TO TRAIN IN THE AREA? I love open water swimming. There are several great places to do that including Lake Washington and the lakes around Issaquah. For cycling, the Carnation area is like being in a whole different world; and for running I really enjoy city running through Bellevue and Redmond.

Andrea has worked as a pilates instructor and personal trainer as she is passionate about helping people be healthy.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? I’m very grateful that I enjoy being active – it keeps me grounded. People in this area are a great community to be active and outdoors with. My favorite activity is trail running, that’s what I do most. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR 2022? I was sidelined by COVID in 2020 and couldn’t run for about five months so I’m ready to get back to long distance trail running. I have three races planned for 2022, a 50-miler in May, a 100-miler in August, and another 50-miler in September – all in Oregon. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PLACE TO TRAIN LOCALLY? Grand Ridge and Tiger Mountain. They’re close and you can get a lot of climbing in. After some of the longer races, I want a break from hard trail running so then I might switch to biking for a while. I typically trail run 70 miles per week. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING ENDURANCE ATHLETES? I think anybody can do it. Start slow and listen to your body. Don’t start with long distance from the get-go because it will lead to injury; build up mileage slowly. Joining a local run group can be very helpful to meet new people who may have more experience. Nutrition is important in races – I carry a hydration pack and set an alarm on my watch to drink every ten minutes, alternating water and electrolytes.

The Cold Plunge
Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 40
S ELF CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLNE S S
Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. Mike and Ryan both previously owned their own flotation therapy centers. Early pioneers in that space, they discovered they shared many of the same values, business practices and interests. Therefore, the formulation of a business together became inevitable. With finding himself feeling sick on a consistent basis, Ryan found solace in cold plunging. With an engineering background and having built his own chest freezer, Mike found cold plunging tubs on the market unattainable. Together, they set out to create a more realistic solution for half the price. “Everything else on the market was $10k, and it’s not really achievable for a lot of people,” they say. But as the business began to set in, so did the 2020 pandemic, forcing both to shut down their primary businesses, which turned out to be a blessing. It offered time for Mike to begin designing the product that would look, feel and cost significantly different. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. Everyone from homeowners to commercial businesses are hopping on the train to add these beautiful accessories into their space. Hot or cold environment, home or commercial studio—the tubs were built with design and longevity in mind. “The one thing I’m still bullish on is I know it works,” Ryan says. “Anyone who gets a unit from us, their true testimony is that this would go onto their top three things they would NOT give up for their health and wellness. Right now the cold plunge is “kind of trendy, it’s kind of cool, but it’s effective. Two to three minutes, or even 60 seconds a day—there are very few things out there that give you the return you get from this.” The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Ryan also knows over the next one to two years they are going to learn so much about cold plunging. As more people do it, there will be more anecdotal data and validity to the practice.

Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.
