JESSICA ROSSMAN MEDINA MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL MEMBER
Women Who Lead
DID YOU PLAN TO BE WHERE YOU ARE TODAY? No. I always disliked being political, and running for office was definitely out of my comfort zone. Years ago, I was a federal litigator at a big law firm and then briefly at the US Attorney’s Office; that work involved travel all around the country and a nationwide legal system, so it was in some ways the opposite of the hyper-local small town work I do now. Yet, both often come down to looking at a problem, identifying the interests of everyone involved, identifying the practical and legal constraints, and negotiating solutions. I’ve always been a fixer and a people person, and from that perspective, where I am now makes perfect sense. IS THERE SOMETHING PARTICULARLY EXCITING ON THE HORIZON FOR YOU OR YOUR CITY? Personally, I am ridiculously excited for summer, and even though it comes every year, it’s particularly exciting after this strange endless dark pandemic winter. In upcoming city business, I’m excited to see Medina start work on updating its Comprehensive Plan, this is a chance for the community to have a series of meaningful conversations about what we want the city to look like and feel like as we move forward. D I E T R A C L AY T O N THE SOPHIA WAY DIRECTOR OF CLIENT SERVICES AND SHELTER PROGRAMS
TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORK. DID YOU PLAN TO BE WHERE YOU ARE TODAY? The Sophia Way serves women who are experiencing homelessness, as well as supports women with permanent housing and supportive services. “Planning” is not something that I did for many years, as I truly lived in survival mode, but my desire to serve and give voice to those who are voiceless, or silenced by social rules that are not rooted in equity has always been a part of me. ARE THERE ANY CURRENT TRENDS SHAPING THE WAY YOU DO BUSINESS? This is a loaded question for me given my field. I would say not in business, but in society, the fight for equity leads to investigating policies that have not helped, but hindered. I find this climate helpful in being able to truly address the needs in our community with appropriate resources. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT A RECENT PROUD MOMENT OR WIN OR SHARE A CHALLENGE YOU ARE FACING?

Bellevue is known as a “city in a park,” with more parks and green spaces than most cities. Almost every home is within walking distance of a park or trail. It is also one of the most diverse cities in the state of Washington, full of art, food, music and entertainment from many different cultures. As we continue to improve the city’s pedestrian and bicycle network, I hope residents can easily reach everything they need right here in Bellevue, maybe even within 15 minutes of their home. Our investments in local food, business, arts, affordable housing and multi-modal transportation will support a city that is connected, equitable, enjoyable and sustainable.

AVETA NECKLACE: This is one of my favorite gifts to give new mothers. Every culture has their own version of the Earth Goddess. The Greeks called her Gaia, the Celts, Aveta. She represents the first goddess, the creator of all life. https://bomajewelry.com/products/n-9101
PAREL SIGNET RING: I love that the pearls we chose for this collection were part of our unused pearl stock due to the fact that they were a bit irregular in shape. I think imperfectness is something to be celebrated. Pearls are an amazing gift for Mother’s Day because of their symbolism. In Chinese cultures, pearls represent wisdom and immortality. https://bomajewelry.com/products/parel-signet-ring
BELLE PENDANT NECKLACE: All green stones in this collection were designed from stones that were unused and sitting in our warehouse for years. These stones were originally sourced by my Dad in the 90’s during his world travels and I’m so excited that we could use them to design new collections. For Asian cultures, green stones like jade, bring protection and good energy. https://bomajewelry.com/products/ belle-pendant-necklace-with-stone
