EVENTS AND WEDDINGS HAVE CHANGED SIGNIFICANTLY IN THE LAST YEAR, BUT THE SHOW DOES GO ON…EVEN IF NOT AS PLANNED. Just like with almost everything this past year, we have found ways to adapt. This month we asked event planners to share their experience and what to expect and plan for this year. We also share a few special wedding stories (mine included!) that adapted to the challenges, yet still were just as special and memorable as ever. This month we also had the chance to interview Pepper Schwartz Ph.D., sociologist, sexologist and tenured professor at the University of Washington, and also one of the “experts” on Lifetime’s Critic’s Choice Award winning series, Married at First Sight. Schwartz gives us her insight into relationship success on page 18. Her authenticity shines through in our interview, just as it does on her show.

Love in Captivity WE ARE A NOSY BUNCH. Whether we admit it, or not, most of us crave at least an occasional peek into the lives of others. Our motivations vary; base curiosity, a chance to discover and ponder our own relative normalcy or freak factor, and sometimes our deep dive into the business of other people represents pure escapism; a guilty pleasure we keep hidden from the world. And as we enter year two of constant togetherness, who can blame us for having a wandering eye...for reality tv! Luckily, most of us have access to a steady stream of unscripted television giving us a front row seat to the homes, habits, and relationship dramas of imperfect strangers, all without leaving the house...because we can’t. Lifetime’s Critic’s Choice Award winning series, Married at First Sight is in its twelfth season and features ten not-so-lucky-in-love singles who agree to enter a legally binding marriage when they first meet their “match” as selected by dating and relationship professionals. It seems like a wild idea, but it is not without success that stems from the earnest and true desire of the participants who are described as “Good people, struggling to get what they want” by Dr. Pepper Schwartz, one of the featured relationship experts. Speaking from her home outside Seattle, Pepper

Big Love, Tiny Ceremony Jeff and Mai Cirillo MARRIED IN 2020, INDIAN WELLS, CALIFORNIA

HOW DID YOU MEET? Jeff and I met in our community. We both belonged to Overlake Golf and Country Club and the Bellevue Club. Jeff courted me through our shared love for golf, fitness and our mutual friendships. THE PROPOSAL: Our relationship blossomed very organically; we are “a very good fit” as my husband would say. Our proposal happened after a long month of Jeff’s strenuous work schedule and my travels. We both arrived happily home and I prepared dinner for us per usual, exhausted from our trips and absolutely elated to finally be reunited. My future husband turned to me and asked with a spark in his eye “Do you want to get married?” After a moment of silence and a sip of wine, I asked “Did you just propose to me?” He smiled. And just like that we were on our way to becoming Husband and wife. It was a very intimate, special moment for us both.

Bellevue Lifestyle | April 2021

WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE OR MOST INGENIOUS SOLUTION WHILE PLANNING AN EVENT DURING THE PANDEMIC? We originally decided on a small wedding ceremony in Kona, Hawaii, however that would not work due to COVID. We definitely modified our original plans as the pandemic was filled with uncertainty. Travel restrictions kept changing and this affected our ability to plan. We then thought of eloping and having our celebration at Overlake Golf & Country Club, however this did not happen due to COVID scheduling and gathering restrictions. The world seemed to be shutting down. Finally, Jeff suggested we get married in the desert, right at our very own home. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE MOMENT OR TWO? Our favorite: Saying our wedding vows to each other with family and friends zooming in, and our immediate family in attendance was incredibly heart warming and special. That very significant momentous day reminded us both even more so, just how important it is having loved ones close. TELL US ABOUT THE DETAILS; FOOD, FASHION, PHOTOS! Our families videotaped, snapped photos and screenshots. They captured very fun memories for us. We hired Katie Geiberger, an amazing photographer and Chef and team leader Anthony of Il Corso in El Paseo, Palm Desert prepared our custom Italian dinner. Chae Collette of Toscana Country Club helped create our intimate setting with flowers by Flower Patch.

BIG LOVE, TINY CEREMONY (CONTINUED)

Bryan and Ruth Ann Otis MARRIED IN 2020, WOODINVILLE, WASHINGTON

THE PROPOSAL: I proposed to Ruth Ann on March 1st, 2020 at Dance Church, which is a mixture dance party and millennial Jazzercize class. The founder, Kate Wallich, carved out a special moment at the end of the class for me to propose. Thankfully, I had asked a friend to video tape the moment. That was the last class that was held, as the next week it was canceled due to the emerging pandemic. We watch the video all the time, and both laugh and reflect on what a year it’s been. DID YOU MODIFY YOUR ORIGINAL PLANS OR WAS THIS EVENT TAILORED FOR THIS VERY WEIRD YEAR? Ha, yes very much. I often tell people that my wedding was my fourth. Not fourth marriage, mind you. No, the fourth wedding we planned in the space of six months. Right after our proposal, we celebrated at one of our favorite lunch spots, called Juicebox. We immediately got out the UW Football calendar, as we needed to plan around the home and away games. Pretty much every person in my family has had to plan their wedding around the UW Football schedule. WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE OR MOST INGENIOUS SOLUTION? The biggest challenge was the need to continuously communicate to family and friends about the changes in all our plans. So many things were changing in the news every day, it felt like we were redesigning our entire wedding every couple of weeks. Thankfully, both our family’s are very flexible, and my brother and his wife have a beautiful open air backyard in Woodinville, so we decided to shift our wedding plans to become a small, family dinner in their backyard. It was the perfect place.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE MOMENT OR TWO? The whole thing was my favorite moment. The entire process of planning a wedding, amidst a pandemic, illuminated to both of us little things we both cared about, and how to communicate those things to each other. PLEASE SHARE ALL THE JUICY DETAILS! TELL US ABOUT THE FOOD, FASHION, DECOR! We designed a farm-to-table dinner that was a mixture of both Pacific Northwest ingredients and traditional Korean dishes. The meal was magic, and helped anchor the family around a shared experience we could all look back on and recreate in the future. Chloe Csadenyi-Benson helped plan the wedding, Teressa Johnson did all the florals, Micah Mowery and JJ Proville did the food, Andrew Means spun vinyl records, and Kara Mercer photographed the entire thing. It was a dream team. WHAT WILL YOU REMEMBER MOST? My wife smiling, a lot. CONTINUED >

BIG LOVE, TINY CEREMONY (CONTINUED)

Max and Caitlin (Agnew) Baker MARRIED EARLY 2021, LEAVENWORTH, WASHINGTON

HOW DID YOU MEET? We originally met, unromantically, 9 years ago. Max won his first round of funding for his company, ILLUMAGEAR, at an Angel Investing event that was held at Caitlin’s business (at the time), Makers Coworking. Years later, we reconnected over coffee, this time romantically. DID YOU MODIFY ORIGINAL PLANS OR WAS THIS EVENT TAILORED FOR THIS VERY WEIRD YEAR? We got engaged in September 2020, so as we discussed plans for the wedding, we knew either we’d have to wait 1-2 years to have a big celebration, or we could do something soon that was small and intimate. We chose the latter, and tailored our ceremony to this very weird time in history. Although we missed having a big party, we loved the intimacy of our small wedding. WEDDING LOCATION? Sleeping Lady Chapel in Leavenworth, Washington WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE OR MOST INGENIOUS SOLUTION? Last minute, Caitlin’s parents encouraged us to incorporate Zoom so we could invite friends and family to “attend.” With a lot of family and friends on the list, Zoom actually couldn’t accommodate our wedding as easily as expected, so the day before we switched to a live YouTube link.

26

Bellevue Lifestyle | April 2021

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE MOMENT OR TWO? Sleeping Lady Resort used to be a CYO camp for many years, and Caitlin’s parents worked there for many summers, and eventually eloped in the same chapel that is there today (45 years ago). Caitlin also wore a vail that has been worn by nearly 50 Agnew women over 3 generations. Max and Nolan, Max’s four year old son and adorable ring bearer, felt very welcomed into the “clan” by all the Agnew traditions. PLEASE SHARE ALL THE JUICY DETAILS! TELL US ABOUT THE FOOD, FASHION, DECOR: We decided to have a micro-wedding just after New Years 2021 and set our wedding date for 2/21/21. With just about a month to plan, we couldn’t spend much time on details. Sleeping Lady Resort was very accommodating with helping set up the chapel, and flowers. We brought a coconut cake from Deru Market, and toasted after Photography by Kara Mercer

the ceremony with Trevari Cellars sparkling wine. It was simple, sweet, and special.

even further than the standard government regulations in order to offer a higher level of safety. For example, at one of our upcoming weddings we are doing all of the following in addition to normal state regulations: on-site rapid COVID tests, 5% venue capacity, having HEPA filters in the ceremony & reception spaces, using UV light treatments on high-touch areas, implementing sanitizing stations, and asking guests to wear color-coded wristbands to indicate their comfort level regarding proximity to others. DO YOU HAVE ANY CREATIVE TIPS OR CAUTIONARY ADVICE FOR READERS WHO MAY BE PLANNING AN EVENT SOON? We would encourage people to really evaluate the food & beverage plan so you can make sure there aren’t many high-touch items. WHY IS IT A GOOD IDEA TO GET PROFESSIONAL EVENT HELP? For wedding & event planning, we not only save you time and emotional stress, but we normally end up saving you a solid chunk of money. Planners have access to lots of special discounts and they also know the best ways to spend your money so you get the most “bang for your buck”. DO YOU HAVE A SIGNATURE STYLE? While we can design events for any theme, our signature style is chic, glam and playful. We love the glamorous events of LA, NY and Miami – that is what really speaks to us — so we try to exemplify that vibe through our events. WHAT OR WHO IS ON YOUR EVENT BUCKET LIST? Any/all of the Kardashians are on our event planning bucket list. We love their taste in events and their love of doing the unexpected. IF YOU COULD SPLURGE ON JUST ONE EVENT ELEMENT, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Ambiance – hands down! TIMES PAST

heirlooms and traditions ARTICLE HEIJA NUNN

Mike and Shelley Carlson I met Mike at the old Keg in Kirkland on December 30, 1987 when I was here visiting my mom from Maryland. He asked me out for lunch and then again for dinner the next day, New Year’s Eve. We had five dates that week and then didn’t see each other again for a year and a half. We finally got married on September 11, 1992. I planned our traditional wedding with my mom’s help. I knew I wanted to wear pearls with my wedding dress. So, for my “something old” on my wedding day, my Mom suggested I wear her pearls. They were given to her by my father when I was a little girl. She thought they would be the perfect length, and they were. Wearing something of hers was very special for us both. I forgot Mike’s wedding ring at home that day, but I brought the pearls!

Bellevue Lifestyle | April 2021

Kristen and Dan Newell I must have been just six or seven when Grandma Russell put the silver dime in my hand and told me the story about our family wedding tradition. She began with the old English rhyme for brides seeking various types of good luck, complete with the final and lesser known fifth line: “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, a silver sixpence in her shoe.” My grandmother had had a silver coin in her shoe, and most likely it was a silver sixpence. That coin is now gone, so perhaps it went to one of her sisters and was handed down in their families. In any case, when it came time for my aunt to marry, a silver dime was selected to be the new heirloom. I was told that the coin must be solid silver, to bring pure luck, not cut with an alloy as that may diminish the luck it brings or perhaps might make it impure. The English favor putting the coin in the left shoe, Irish prefer the right. We were mostly a Scottish family and perhaps it had to do with political feelings that my grandmother felt the right shoe was the correct placement. Some say the coin must be given by a relative with a good longstanding marriage. Others say it must be given by someone with good fortune. Mine was given to me by my aunt who’d had both. At my wedding with every step I felt the dime in my right shoe and my grandmother in my heart.

Doug and Diane (Lundeen) Smith MODERN

I wouldn’t necessarily call this a tradition, but we did have a few special circumstances to contend with when we got married many years ago. My dad had recently passed away and it was important to me to have his presence felt at the wedding. We had several photos of him near the guestbook, a reference to him in our wedding program, and I wore a gold chain with a fish charm that had belonged to

him. I began to wear the chain right after he passed away and while it didn’t exactly fit with my wedding attire, it made me feel a little closer to him on that day. We were fortunate to have two of his sisters (my Aunt Sally and Aunt Muriel) fly out from his home state of Minnesota to represent the Lundeen side of the family at our wedding. I also gained a daughter through our marriage - Melanie was 6 when we met and 11 the summer we got married. Including her in the ceremony and event was very important to both of us. Mel had taken hula lessons from a very young age, and surprised us by learning a special dance to perform in the ceremony. She told us just a few days before
