REMINDER THAT WE ALL HAVE A CREATIVE SIDE WORTH EXPLORING. It takes time, passion, and courage to dive into our artistic nudges. Most people don’t consider themselves artists and don’t bother paying attention to the creativity they have. A silver lining from 2020 is that we finally found the time to explore and create, and even discovered how much we enjoyed our creations. This month’s stories cover art collectors, furniture makers, fashion designers, and more. I personally felt so inspired by our features, that I decided to share my own artistic journey (on page 36).

One thing I’ve learned and believe is “artists love other artists.” When we see someone else creating, it typically inspires us to create. EastHUB recognizes this concept so much so that they are building the “cultural capital of the Northwest” right here in Bellevue. This soon to be cultural, high-quality community-gathering and workable space, will be right in our backyard. How lucky are we? Read more on page 22. What have you been creating lately? AMAZON SPHERES PLANT SALE BENEFITS WOODLAND PARK ZOO Seattle's Periodic: A Pop-Up Shop hosted a fundraiser in January for Woodland Park Zoo featuring rare plants for sale from the Amazon Horticulture Department at the Amazon Spheres. The Amazon Spheres featured over 3,000 unique species of plants from all around the world; this was the first time these plants were being made available for purchase to the public. 100 percent of proceeds from the plant sale directly supported Woodland Park Zoo’s Living Northwest Conservation Program. 16

fortunately - the pandemic changed things. “I had lost my job at Nordstrom as a result of the pandemic. I’d always dreamt of becoming an entrepreneur in the fashion industry. So instead of trying to find a job, I created a job for myself by starting a company right in my own home Bellevue. This was my chance of making it happen, whether I succeed or not.” SSKEIN, Yips luxury knitwear company, is modern and sustainable. With definitive silhouettes, attention to detail and timeless pieces; SSKEIN’s designs are suited for the modern-day woman to be worn for years to come. Yip is passionate about creating high quality versatile product with the focus on sustainability and eco-friendly practices. “From packaging to sourcing and business method, everything we do and the steps we take, have intention and purpose,” says Yip. Of course, launching a new business during a pandemic has had its challenges. With fashion, people like to touch and feel, and the pandemic made it difficult for Yip to meet with customers in person. She worked hard to creatively solve problems by hosting virtual trunk shows, seeking press, interviews, webinar series and more. “I will not give up. I have too much on the line and many are rooting for me.” In 2021, Yip is hopeful she will finally be able to get in front of customers and share more about SSKEIN. “It truly takes a visionary mindset to design a full fashion sweater. I believe the category is underserved in offering comfort and ease to women working from home.” For more information follow SSKEIN on Instagram @sskein.co or online at sskein.co

and has big plans for 2021. EastHUB was created to seize an opportunity created by a set of circumstances unique right now to Bellevue and the Eastside: + The Eastside is in dire need of high-quality community-gathering and workable, accessible cultural spaces + Scores of arts and cultural affinity groups exist on the Eastside, and many have been priced out of their spaces due to the torrid real estate climate + Dozens of major developments in Bellevue and throughout the Eastside are currently under construction or in the pipeline to break ground soon + The Eastside’s population is rapidly growing, and there is a pressing need for new cultural gathering spaces to keep pace with that growth Adding to these circumstances, EastHUB will consider the new conditions that exist now; A decline of in-person retail shopping is challenging developers with excess space in their new mixed-use projects that they need to fill with drivers of traffic and public engagement. The City of Bellevue and surrounding municipal governments have a strong interest in creating active downtown cores for their citizens, and have put into place generous incentives for developers to include cultural spaces and our region’s major corporate citizens have a vested interest in making the Eastside an attractive and rewarding place to live and work. Microsoft, a key early EastHUB supporter, recently summed up the opportunity for EastHUB:

LOU IN BLUE JAUME PLENSA DESCRIPTION (LEFT)
Sculpt from solid basalt, and weighing in at 3,304 pounds, this sculpture is placed front and center at Aegis headquarters to greet visitors and staff. Lou in Blue was selected to symbolize the intellect of the Aegis Living staff and honors their hard work and dedication. The best and brightest are sought after and trained, and each staff member goes through a rigorous interview process outlined in Dwayne’s book Help Wanted: Recruiting, Hiring, and Retaining Exceptional Staff. Lou in Blue was sculpted by artist Jaume Plensa. You may also be familiar with Plensa’s work at the downtown waterfront Olympic Sculpture Park in Seattle called Echo.
RED ROPE MALA CAT HERINE E ATON SK INNER DESCRIPTION Similar to a rosary, this dyed-red rope symbolizes a Mala, which has been used in Buddhism and Hinduism for centuries. The 54 ½ feet and 108 knots of the Mala prayer beads are used to keep count of repetitive prayers and reminds us to focus. This art piece has been deliberately hung by the front door of the Aegis building to remind all who enter to focus. It is a symbol that things don’t just happen by accident, but strategically in everything we do.

DESCRIBE YOUR CREATION: Since March 2020, I've created 90 or so read-aloud videos for my k-5 students. Due to publisher requirements, the videos are made available to my students in a protected format.
Create HOW AND WHY DID YOU START THIS COLLECTION/WORK? When the world turned upside down I believed access to books and stories would be more important than ever – especially with school and public libraries closed. While other read-aloud videos exist online, I believed students would be more inclined to engage if they saw someone they know - their librarian - reading aloud just like it was a regular school day. And so the Sockeye Virtual Library idea came to life. Each week, I’ve created videos with grade-specific read-alouds and optional extension activities. An important element is on-demand access. Everyone’s home life is unique and not all students have the privilege to log on at a particular time for a live reading. WHAT REWARDS DO YOU REAP? It’s been amazing to see the response from my school community.
Students/families shared that
were watching every read-aloud offered, even those from different grade levels. Viewing patterns showed that some students were watching the videos as bedtime stories, as late as 11pm! 32

Collect NAME: Lynn Sanborn OCCUPATION/ORGANIZATION: Real Estate Agent, Windermere Real Estate, President of the Seattle King County Realtors for 2021 EASTSIDE WORKPLACE LOCATION OR RESIDENCE: Kirkland DESCRIBE YOUR COLLECTION: Collector of HEART shaped rocks HOW AND WHY DID YOU START THIS COLLECTION/WORK? I bought a little place on Whidbey Island on the water after my mom died. She had a place on Bainbridge and we shared so many special times there. Walking on the beach was my way of connecting with her. I started looking for heart shaped rocks. If other people joined me, I would remind them that “no heart is perfect”. WHAT REWARDS DO YOU REAP? This is my way of meditating and remembering; I will think about someone who has passed and a heart rock will appear…I like to think they are there, helping me find my treasures. DOES THIS PASTIME INTEGRATE INTO THE REST OF YOUR LIFE? My “heart” rocks remind me to have a good heart and do good things. I am passionate about helping those in need and am part of a monthly giving group called the Butterfly Effect. Since my career is selling homes, I feel a responsibility to also help those who are homeless to get into housing.

NUDGES, BREADCRUMBS, AHA IDEAS.… WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL THEM, THEY ARE REAL, AND ALL AROUND IF WE’RE PAYING ATTENTION. Growing up, there was a Monet painting of young girl walking through a field of flowers hanging in the hallway outside my bedroom. I’ve come to the conclusion I’m drawn to painting flowers for this reason, because otherwise I can't seem to figure out where the inspiration comes from. Something in me feels an inner nudge to paint large scale abstract florals. And I'm a strong believer in following a nudge when you feel it. I’ve done this in my

business career – I founded one of Seattle’s first coworking spaces, Makers Space, in 2010 and sold that business in 2017. Then immediately after founded Bellevue Lifestyle Magazine. With both businesses I followed the nudge to launch my ideas and enjoyed successes in the journey. But, I had never before applied that nudge to art. Largely because I’ve never considered myself an artist, other than dabbling here and there over the past couple years. I didn’t believe I deserved the label “artist.” But, when the first lockdown hit, I took the opportunity to explore what I had always been drawn to. In April of 2020, I ordered 12 large canvases and downsized my home office to make room for a large drop cloth and painting supplies. Why not go all in? What I’ve learned as an artist, just as in business and in life, is it takes courage to follow our "aha" ideas and our "breadcrumbs." And with art, just as in businesses and in life, we don’t know what the final product will look like, but that’s ultimately the fun of it. Maybe that Monet painting outside my bedroom as a child was my first nudge towards a passion for the arts. I’m grateful I finally listened.
