Every area of our lives were shifted in some way in 2020, and so many times we were forced to pause and dig deeper; get uncomfortable. The good news: it seems our “wtf’s” are turning into “what can I do about it?” Although we may still feel limited in many ways due to Covid-19, we’re getting creative. Even

JUJUBEET EXPECTS MORE FROM A CLEANSE

CULINARY CREATIONS

A NEW W I N T E R R I T U A L AT JUJUBEET, WE SEE WELLNESS AND REGULATION OF LIFE ENERGY AS “TENDING A FIRE”. In winter months, our bodies want something quite a bit different from a cleanse than in the summer. In colder seasons, we crave grounding, nourishment and consistency. The new Jujubeet cleanse honors all the seasonal elements at play: temperature, light, disrupted circadian rhythms, increased anxiety, etc. We observed how these interact with the body’s own natural regulation and ability to cleanse. All year round, we try to keep the digestive fire at a nice, consistent level. Over-stimulation in a cleanse, in the winter, can affect the nervous system and the fragile emotional eco-system. Hello, cayenne pepper shots - I’m looking at you! In our experience, this leads to a digestive bonfire and the energetic flame quickly goes out. At Jujubeet, we wanted to create a seasonal-specific approach to cleansing that is rooted in the ritual of slowing down, acknowledging the body’s experience, and learning how plant-based variations can calibrate us at different times of the year. Jujubeet owner Bianca Syzperski and dietitian Elena Razmpoosh have curated this incredible new cleanse: the Winter Ritual Cleanse. First, we added our signature best-selling detox soups as a daily “pause” and a chance to reflect on how varying spices and temperature, for example, yield different outcomes at different times of the day. Second, we added more wonderfully satiating nut milks! Elena, is an incredible creator of healthy nut milk elixirs. The perfect anecdote to a dark, cold evening is a spicy, warm nut milk - so filling and satiating in the belly! The Winter Ritual Cleanse also includes our favorite Green Juices and Detox Tonics and Elixirs, yet they are offset in winter by richness, grounding and warmth. Join us! #jujubeetcleanseclub and the plant-magic conversation @jujubeetcafe

LOCALS ONLY ARTICLE HEIJA NUNN

K I M B E R LY WA L K E R OCCUPATION/VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION: FINANCE DIRECTOR AT AMAZON AND PRESIDENT OF THE BELLEVUE SCHOOLS FOUNDATION BOARD.

LOCALS SHARE WHAT'S NEW IN 2021

DO YOU HAVE AN OVERALL VISION FOR 2021? My parents were educators who instilled the importance of public education in me. That’s why I volunteer at the Bellevue Schools Foundation. I want to do my part in making a high quality education possible and accessible to all students in Bellevue. WHAT WILL BE NEW TO YOU IN 2021? Stepping out of my personal comfort zone to make meaningful connections while also helping BSF earn the trust of donors and stakeholders. I’m an introvert-extrovert. My natural inclination is to be home, and if I’m in public, I’m typically the observant, quiet one. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO TRY THIS NEW THING? Being in the pandemic isolation magnified the importance of building and maintaining relationships. I took for granted the chance meetings, running into each other in the grocery store or in the hallway. Striking up a conversation about nothing and laughing together. I miss those opportunities to witness each other’s lives and support one another. WHAT STEPS WILL YOU TAKE? I took a big first step when I moved cross country without knowing folks, but now...I don’t know! Be more intentional? Set an appointment to do something? Join a book club? Maybe attend some Bellevue Chamber of Commerce networking meetings? Help! BIGGEST OBSTACLE TOWARD COMPLETING YOUR PLAN? Connecting virtually. I giggle when I’m nervous. I’ve heard that laughter is good for your health. I guess this year I’ll be really, really healthy as I giggle through my nerves while meeting new people. WHAT OUTCOME DO YOU HOPE FOR? I hope that I meet more people and connect with those who share my passion for public education. I hope that together we’re able to make a substantial difference in our community and grow our future leaders. 26

Resolution Revolution

AMELIA MCDONALD OCCUPATION/HOBBY: I AM A NURSE IN THE BELLEVUE SCHOOL DISTRICT, A MOTHER, AND A POTTER. DO YOU HAVE AN OVERALL VISION FOR 2021? In 2021 I see myself helping my school communities return to in person learning with a focus on health and safety. I have spent so many hours discussing hand washing! My hope is that we all use this pandemic experience to be kinder and more understanding with each other. WHAT WILL BE NEW TO YOU IN 2021? My goal is to expand on my pottery business. My website potterybyamelia.com is a new adventure and there is a lot to learn. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO TRY THIS NEW THING? My first experience creating with clay was in the late 1980’s. My three kids will always be my greatest achievement, but they are growing up, and looking to find their passion and chase it. In 2017 I decided it was time for me to do the same. I took a pottery class through the Bellevue Parks Department, before I knew it, I had a pottery wheel and a kiln in my garage. WHAT STEPS WILL YOU TAKE? Selling my work has always been uncomfortable for me. It is a pleasant surprise that other people like my art enough to buy the final product. My first few sales were motivated by my kids. They noticed that the garage was overwhelmed by the volume of things I was making. I needed to sell some if they ever wanted to access their bikes again! BIGGEST OBSTACLE TOWARD COMPLETING YOUR PLAN? Nothing will hold me back in 2021! This past year has taught me that I am stronger than I ever imagined. WHAT DOES SUCCESS LOOK LIKE? Success for me looks like ending each day exhausted by the pleasure of the day. My family, my job, and my art all provide that joy.

A Letter to Bellevue Thank you for voting us the “Best of Bellevue” for the second year in a row! While your vote of confidence in our maintenance-free living and exceptional services and programming is always appreciated, this year this award has even greater significance! This year, the value of comfort and convenience took on a whole new meaning. Dynamic, active lifestyles took pause in the name of safety. The sense of community and connections were stretched to make way for social distancing and virtual visits. New and innovative demands were made on the way we deliver our services. Putting residents, families, prospects and team members at ease amidst a global pandemic was paramount. And yet, through it all, the collective strength of The Bellettini shined through.

Thank you for sharing pride in our community, and for your continued confidence in the services, amenities, and conveniences we offer. We remain committed to providing Bellevue seniors with beautiful accommodations, premier wellness programs, culinary delights, extraordinary amenities, a luxurious lifestyle and heightened safeguards to keep you well during this difficult time. We’ve learned a lot during this time, and adapted in ways that will only make us stronger.

Let’s Celebrate!

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 20TH, 2021 • 6:30 PM TO 7:30 PM We look forward to raising a virtual glass and celebrating the successes of this year with you. Reserve the pick-up or delivery of our complimentary Signature Celebration Box today!

Our health, our growing family, and our amazing supportive group of friends and clients who have supported us as a business and as true friends are another huge source of motivation. kevin ng BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF 2020? Shifting the connection with my community and students from in-person to online. Creating and conducting an unforgettable energy exchange is one of my biggest inspirations and aspirations as an instructor. Teaching virtually enables me to “say” everything I need to but not conducive to making everyone “feel” something together.

WHAT ARE YOU HOPEFUL FOR IN 2021? At a micro level, I am hopeful that people will eventually return to support local fitness facilities and studios. They are pillars of our community that foster connection and positive growth. Seeing so many close in 2020 is difficult to bear but inspires me to do everything I can to help them rebuild stronger when we return. At a macro level, I am hopeful we can learn from what we experienced in 2020 to evolve and grow. Amongst a global pandemic to social injustices being exposed and divisive politics, our past can provide us with some much-needed perspective and awareness. It is from this place of awareness that we can learn to appreciate what we have and work towards changing what we do not.

doors for 6 months. CV-19 wasn’t in the biz plan, but we’re rolling with the punches.

WHAT KEEPS YOU MOTIVATED? Family and our community. My wife is my business partner (or, more accurately, I’m hers), and we have two kids. We’ve been doing fitness full-time in Seattle and the Eastside for 12 years and love the community. These are some of the most discerning people on the planet. Shiny objects and fancy advertising doesn’t carry the premium here that they would in other cities. If you want them to jump ship to your service, you have to earn it. But, if you can convince them to climb aboard, they’ll stay for a long time and even help navigate.

TOP “AT HOME” FITNESS TIP: After you eat, do 10. I don’t care what it is - pushups, squats, situps, lunges, Kegels (ha), etc. Pick an exercise and do 10 reps. In the long-term, your reps will compound and you’ll build muscle or prevent muscle atrophy; in the short-term, you’ll blunt the rise in blood sugar and insulin from the food, and store less as fat.
