OUR CONTENT CAN OFTEN LEAN HEAVILY ON THE FEMALE SIDE, BUT THIS MONTH WE TURN OUR ATTENTION TO THE MEN—AND WE HAD A BLAST WITH THEM! From health, to cars, to food and more—we found local men from all industries to share their expertise and wisdom. We had fun with Joe Bae, owner of Joe Bae Salon, with his dapper models showcasing the latest hair trends. We also met with Mike Mutzel, nutritionist and author, to learn why his motto is “Health is wealth.” For a masculine spin on food and wine pairings, we asked for advice from Nelson Dequip, the award-winning sommelier and director of wine and spirits at Canlis. And one my favorite shoots to date: classic cars with model and friend Gene Twedt. I wish we could have showcased the entire gorgeous car collection these models belong to, but we narrowed it down to our favorite three that embodied a classic summertime feel. Our “Men on the Move” feature highlights men from different industries who

This 1957 Corvette is one of four made in the arctic blue over silver exterior with the orange/red interior color scheme and was the first fuel-injected auto delivered to the West Coast. In addition, this vehicle was also the very first American car to have 283 horsepower with a 283-cubic-inch engine. The three-speed manual has an all fiberglass body, with all original matching number parts. When delivered to the Chevrolet dealership in Renton, Washington, it was so newsworthy that an article was written about the vehicle for the local newspaper. The original owner raced the car on the local circuit and was featured at the Le May Auto Museum in a retrospective show of Corvettes.

The 2015 blend is 70 percent mourvedre, 25 percent grenache and 5 percent syrah and can be found in our backyard of warm and sunny Yakima Valley. Its dark fruit components, earthy and smoky notes and long, gritty finishes on the palate make it a perfect pairing to the roasted pork. Chef Williams cooks the center-cut, bone-in loin slowly to perfection over applewood leaving it moist and flavorful. He finishes the dish with green garlic, hazelnut puree and savory pork jus, resulting in pure magic on a plate.

The blanc de blancs sits at the heart of the Côte des Blancs and comes from a fourth-generation husband and wife team obsessed with acidity and minerality, Nelson says. The pairing of the Hood Canal oysters and French Champagne feels natural as each echoes the flavors and characters of one another; they are lovely and pure like a golden apple and reflect similar briny and rich seawater notes. When roasting a whole duck, it gives you the opportunity to experience a few different types of cooking temperatures, meat texture and that extra special crispiness from the skin, Nelson says. The tenderness of a perfectly cooked duck breast with a sweet glaze and slightly salty finish is best paired with a medium-bodied wine with a long, complex finish.

Nelson complements the dish with a local wine from Erica Orr, who, in his opinion, is making one of the more intriguing white wines around. He describes the chenin blanc as bold and textured while it continues to build on the finish with notes of honeydew melon and beeswax.Â
